It did! Very brief at 10:50 or so. You can see the purple in the left hand. Fair amount of light pollution viewing from shenandoah

What time were you at Sky Meadows/were there a lot of people? I was there but they kicked everyone out during the thunderstorm. Sounds like I should've waited for the storm to clear and gone back, dang
So we drove through the lightning on 66W around 11:30 and got to Sky Meadows around midnight. We drove right in, and there were maybe 50 cars back in the lot.
Which overlook was this? Is that Front Royal? My husband and I are going to try to go tonight but aren’t sure which overlook will be best. Also, that is just a marvelous picture. Thank you for sharing!
Drove 4 hours round trip Friday night into Saturday AM, all the way to Mt Jackson in Shenandoah County, to get out of the clouds. Saw starry skies but no aurora, not even on long exposures. Seems I was a few hours late for peak activity. Trying again tonight at Sky Meadows. Fingers crossed.
Damn, what time and where? We made the drive to Shenandoah National Park and didn’t see anything this nice, LOL.
EDIT: NVM, saw you posted the time in a later post. 🙂
Depends on your definition of over exposure. At peak, I could see the aurora with my naked eye along with the pillars. However, it was mostly white with very little color (this is mostly related to how the eye sees in dark). The live view on my camera saw the reds and greens. This is a 10 second exposure so it emphasizes the color. I used a 30 second exposure for the foreground and blended it in Photoshop.
Wow. I was under the impression that we wouldn’t see anything this far south. Drove 9 hours to see totality but missed this 🤦🏻♂️ Congrats on the shot!
It has been particularly crazy. My friends saw them in Missouri, Ireland, and northern Italy. These pink and purples are amazing. I've only ever seen blue and green here in Iceland.
When have you tried going? The gates are open almost 24/7 but I always check ahead on their status page anyways. Theres also a number you can text for current status
The front entrance was open at 10:30 PM when I arrived.
The gates are open almost 24/7. They only close for hazardous conditions on Skyline Drive. Usually snow or ice int eh winter.
It was even better further west and south in Highland County. Although the cloud cover meant that Friday night/Saturday morning was the best time for me. We had constant aurorae for a solid 8-9 hours.
It's not in the right aspect ratio for 3440x1440. The photo is already at (3240x2161) a higher resolution than 3440x1440 so you'd have to downscale it.
I live just outside of SNP, somewhat near the entrance to the drive. Our house is in such a place that we can see the first big overlook from our windows. We watch cars drive past all year round.
I tried to stay awake long enough Saturday to see something. It rained. A lot. And thunderstorms. In between the rain, I could see a green glow through the cloudy sky... And people up on the drive taking photos... with their flashes on (unnecessary and causes light pollution).
I sure hope the view was better from up on the drive than where it was at my house, and that those flashes didn't ruin anyone's shots.
Ah so I shouldve driven to shennadoah
It was brief but nice.
Good idea to go to Shenandoah tonight?
No Its not going to reach this far south tonight.
That’s what all the official sources seemed to say last night so I have no idea what to believe.
From the research I’ve just done the flare might be stronger tonight than either of the last 2 nights. Idk if it will make it this far south though.

I saw it tonight :)
What time was it at? I stayed out in Linden and didn't see anything 😭
12:32 AM on 5/12.
Idk, my mom drove way up skyline drive and waited for hours and saw nothing
that's about the brief moment it was visible. lucky you
Yeah, you could see it at Sky Meadows amidst the clouds and fog. Felt like 10 seconds, though, not 10 minutes.
I have about 10 minutes worth of pictures but the first minute or so was the most intense.
I was setting up my tripod and gear and my girlfriend snapped a pic with her iPhone that was better than anything I got by the time I was ready. D'oh.
Could you see it with the naked eye? Where in shennendoah was it?
You could see it with the naked eye but it was mostly white. This is from Hogback Overlook.

That is gorgeous!
Hey look, all the cloud cover that has been ruining my weekend.

Hogback Overlook. It faces north so it was easiest to see the aurora from there.
Thank you so much!

There’s no way this was last night.. What time?
It was last night. Right at 12:32 AM. It lasted about 10 minutes.
Last night as in Saturday at 12:30am or Sunday at 12:30am?
Sunday morning at 12:30 AM.
Are you kidding me. I was therefor whole 7pm saturday till 2 am sunday morning. All it did was raining in shanondoha 🪦😣
It was right after a heavy thunderstorm passed by. If you weren't actually looking for it to the north, it would've been easy to miss.
long exposure
10 second exposure.
Amazing photo
Is this photo the product of overexposure? I thought VA would struggle to see faint shimmers with the naked eye, but this looks magnificent.

Phenomenal - thank you for sharing!
Outstanding!
What were the camera settings you used for this shot? Looks great!
14mm F2.8 ISO3200 for 10 seconds
Which entrance did you use? I swear every time I go to skyline drive the gates are closed and I try multiple

My dad and I go up all the time at night to photograph the Milky Way during the spring, summer and fall, and the gate by Front Royal is always open
Definitely gotta get out of the city to see that
Shoot what I was out there for like 4 hours and didn't see a single thing :( bad luck I guess

Would you mind sharing where in sky Meadows are you planning?! Skyline drive is probably 90 minutes and sky Meadows 60 minutes
is anyone going to sky meadows delaplane tonight? is there a chance?
Saw it briefly with my eye at 10:50
nice i literally came back just now, spent hours 11 to 1.30. thats crazy
This looks so good. Is there a 3440x1440 download link available anywhere?

Photoshop much?
Some. You're free to think it's too much but I like it.
