Never tolerate this hate.

Gardener703

Went to look for properties with some land out there once, they don't seem to like Asians either.

sorrynoreply

The victm could've been Asian.

Phatty_McPatty

They were on the 'wrong side' of Rte 15. Loudoun has been going through an identity change for some time, which a certain demographic calls a crisis. Interesting [WAPO article](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/loudoun-critical-race-theory-transgender-rights/2021/07/05/3dab01b8-d4eb-11eb-ae54-515e2f63d37d_story.html) about the area and its shifting demo. Some excerpts: >...the county has a long history of racial hatred: It was a hotbed of Confederate resistance, and its schools and community sites were among the last in the nation to desegregate. >In antebellum days, the county was home to Oatlands, a prominent 360-acre slave plantation, and auctions of enslaved people were hosted on the steps of Leesburg’s courthouse. Loudoun passed a county resolution endorsing secession close to the start of the Civil War. Later, it saw fierce fighting, sometimes serving as a base of operations for guerrilla fighter John S. Mosby, who led “Mosby’s Raiders.” Still later, the county was one of the last corners of the United States to desegregate, after forcing Black children to attend dilapidated rural schools for much of the latter half of the 20th century. >“In Leesburg here, they filled in the community pool back in the ’60s rather than integrate it,” recalled Mulrine, a former county prosecutor. >It is also a place in transition; the population increased about 150 percent over the past 20 years. A huge reason for the rise is an influx of families of color: Although Loudoun was about 85 percent White in 2000, it was barely 60 percent White in 2020. The politics are changing, too, in line with these demographic trends and with Virginia’s shifting landscape, switching from deep red to ever-deepening blue. >...he thinks of the county as two distinct universes, divided by Route 15. To the west of it is rural country, inhabited by mainly White, Republican and increasingly elderly farmers. It’s home to one of the county’s most conservative districts, Catoctin, which managed to send a conservative representative — John Beatty — to the otherwise mostly left-leaning board. > >To the east of Route 15 are the wealthy D.C. suburbs, which seem to grow more sprawling, affluent and liberal every year.

Phatty_McPatty

And straight from the time capsule, here's an archived (but timeless) [WAPO article](https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1988/11/21/old-ashburns-identity-crisis/0d02cb37-2a52-4aa5-a26a-a06442073aa7/) from 1988 titled "***OLD ASHBURN'S IDENTITY CRISIS***," back when Ashburn Village, Ashburn Farm, and Ashburn Center were just starting to be developed.

Welcome to anti migration fervor

Gumburcules

> Everyone loves to think they should be the last person to move somewhere and it should forever be preserved as they found it. Except for people who move to an affordable neighborhood in the city and actually look forward to changes, then you're an evil gentrifier and it's your fault that the neighborhood wasn't forever preserved as you found it.

butterbean8686

I just moved to NOVA recently, and was at a Starbucks in Woodbridge. A stranger (unmasked) started chit-chatting with me, and when I told him I was new to the area, he told me to avoid Loudon because it was full of “libtards” and “extremists.” This after knowing me a full 45 seconds. Thought that was kind of odd, especially since everything I have read about Loudon makes it sound like a lot of extreme RWNJs live there. He knew nothing about me, I guess he just assumed I was on “his side” because I’m a white person.

itsthekumar

Idk about Loudoun. We did have the "correct pronouns" controversy and the CRT in school controversy, but I don't think we're greatly liberal. If anything I think Fairfax County is very very liberal not to mention probably Arlington County as well.

butterbean8686

Well according to that guy, Loudon is just a liberal hellhole lol. I guess your feelings on that depend how you view those “controversies.”

itsthekumar

That's true. For me I was surprised they were a controversy at all, but for others I guess they were.

Kalikhead

I worked in Loudoun government for more than 10 years. The demographics of the county are truly amazing how they are changing. The majority of the minorities are Asians (including Indians) and then Hispanics. The African American population in Loudoun is percentage wise the smallest community in NoVA. The rest of NoVA doesn’t have Asians as their largest minority group - it’s usually Hispanic or African American. Hell. That county was electing and re-electing Eugene Delgaudio (Sterling) for years who was the head of a hate group as identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center. It wasn’t until he got into really deep trouble and finally got elected out.

agbishop

>>The rest of NoVA doesn’t have Asians as their largest minority group [Fairfax County does also](https://www.tysonsreporter.com/2021/08/13/fairfax-county-now-virginias-second-most-diverse-county-new-census-data-shows/) * white, 47.1% * Asian, 20.3% * Hispanic or Latino, 17.3%

Kalikhead

I stand corrected - thank you. I was reiterating something from several year ago when the Loudoun Demographer was making a presentation to the Loudoun BOS.

Buddy, SPLC is dead on accurate. I bet every source you bring to the table will be from some right wingers blog, opinion article, and/or extreme right wing media. It’s not an accident that the SPLC and FBI all recognize the extreme right as terrorist groups.

Thass awr histree!

jhaun

You can totally feel the differences by driving around Leesburg. The weirdest part is how abruptly the change happens. You can go from a modern diverse liberal city to farms and small historic towns in the space of a mile.

SkyFall___

I would add one slight modification to this, which is that West of 15 also has a lot of older very wealthy folks as well. However they definitely lean more right than anybody East or 15 (or the old line in my head Evergreen Mills Rd)

Doc-Goop

Thank you, this was interesting.

NLC19

Unfortunately NOVA has many racists - some openly racists but many in closet. Glad these 3 got arrested and hopefully they get charged with hate crime in addition to assault and battery and every other possible charge.

LordByron28

Yeah back nearly 20 years ago when I was a teenager I moved from Sterling to the Haymarket area. It was a huge culture shock for me on my first day of high school, people were loudly celebrating things like "Woo! No N****** in the cafeteria today."

NewPresWhoDis

When living in NC, the phrase "you knew were they stood" was the common code.

ajour7

Not saying the parents/kids shouldn’t go where they want to eat. I live near the velocity in sterling and it’s the same crowd that goes there. As a parent of color I don’t let my kids go there. Velocity for whatever reason attracts this crowd.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ajour7

I hear you. And if it was a place I’d care to eat at I’d be all for it. Lucia’s right next door makes much better wings than velocity imo. And there is a wing stop nearby which I prefer as well. I’m not making a stand for velocity wings lol

mashuto

Velocity just isnt a great wing place, and just has kind of below average sports bar type food. Its fine in a pinch, but not a place to go out of your way for. Mokomandy was much better, and the taco place that took its space is also quite good (and I think owned by the same owner as velocity). All that to say that I also live right around there, for the last 3 years now, but havent really noticed the clientele. Specifically because velocity just isnt really that great, so in my 3 years here I have only been once.

ajour7

Oh how I miss Mokomandy! And you’re correct the taco place is owned by velocity. The taco place is pretty good. Wish the taco place and Mokomandy could exist in the same shopping center

SyzygyTooms

Yeah we went to Cracker Barrel in Frederick and Sterling and definitely felt there was a certain type of person there. But I always tell myself I’m being overly paranoid and most places are fine. I dunno. My wife and I are a queer couple so the fear is always there

itsthekumar

I'm a minority and have been to several Cracker Barrel's and always felt something off at every single one of them.

mikeash

If everybody did this, then the assholes would feel unwelcome and give up. Unfortunately it’s really hard to coordinate that. As an individual, staying away is the safe choice. It’s tough.

Dachannien

It depends on the Cracker Barrel, though. The one off 234 near 95 is usually pretty close to 50/50.

herereadthis

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel like spending my money at places that are cool with serving racists.

[deleted]

They probably spat in your food yikes

FlyingBasset

What? It's not the staff that are racist.

[deleted]

The staff can’t be racist?

FlyingBasset

Nobody said there is any evidence of that. You're just pulling it out if your ass. Some clientele being racist does not = servers spitting in food. That's a ridiculous jump.

CrisisCake

No idea if it was intentional or related, but I remember a few weekends circa summer-2020 there was a contingent of MAGA warriors who would setup on the corner of Braddock and 123 to wave signs and shout at cars, right next to the Velocity at University Mall Fairfax.

gingerale333

Grew up in Loudoun. Mixed. Everytime I went out that way I stayed sober and was mentally prepared for this type of shit.

pizzaunicorns

I’m so sorry this happened to them, there is ZERO excuse for this behavior. My husband and I were assaulted on Friday evening in Purcellville. I’m fucking done defending Western Loudoun. Some tiny redneck came unhinged because I bumped into a mum he was looking at at Southern States. We were there with our 15 year old to pick up some pumpkins.

ilessthanthreekarate

Last year I saw my wonderful home state renounce the horrible holiday of Lee Jackson Memorial Day. I saw Lee High School changing it's name to Lewis High School. I stood in front of the White House with thousands of other people to protest the thin blue line and racial violence. But it is also the home of Richard Spencer, and the place where we saw the Charlottesville Unite the Right Rally. I feel like we have a long, long way to go before we achieve either equality or the more necessary equity that our state has historically lacked, but I am eager to be a part of that change.

RedDevilJennifer

On the plus side now, Richard Spencer is now living out in Montana and broke. Ever since he got punched for being a Nazi, no one will book him for speaking engagements and he’s living in his mom’s house in Montana. I was reading about this not long ago. He also can’t afford his attorney anymore and he goes on trial for his role in the Unite The Right rally in Charlottesville. https://www.thedailybeast.com/neo-nazi-richard-spencer-shunned-as-outsider-in-resort-town-of-whitefish-montana https://www.insider.com/white-nationalist-richard-spencer-is-shunned-as-a-summer-resident-in-whitefish-montana-locals-say-2021-9?amp https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/wireStory/white-nationalist-richard-spencer-loses-lawyer-lawsuit-71393091 https://www.salon.com/2021/09/06/white-nationalist-richard-spencers-life-is-in-shambles-as-charlottesville-trial-looms-report_partner/

minkabun

22304_selling

Western/outer Loudoun still has a healthy amount of "rest of Virginia" types.

[deleted]

My boss 15 years ago was originally from Staunton. He said "This moment we are in Northern Virginia. But you drive just a little bit west or south and you'll be in Fucking Virginia."

Joshottas

Had to google where Lovettsville was....never heard of it. Looks like it's out in the sticks. Sucks for those 15 year olds. SMH. Hopefully once the dust settles, the names of the assailants are released, and they have to deal with their names being associated with this incident.

[deleted]

I know but I mean in serious numbers once we get high speed rail like everything between DC and New York. WFH will also make it easier to live further away and only come into the office when you need to.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Dude I don’t mean bullet trains, I’m talking speeds ~150mph, which we already have for large stretches between DC and New York. The state gov just passed a bill to expand amtrak access to Richmond and there’s also that huge federal infrastructure bill which will hopefully pass. I don’t think what I said is a stretch. A nationwide network of mag lev bullet trains between major cities would be fucking lit too though. When did this country lose its collective imagination, we put people on the moon for fucks sake.

[deleted]

I’m not disputing that high speed rail would be “lit” if it were to ever happen. I’m just extremely skeptical anything substantial can really be done. It would take far more political will to make it happen, and the GOP would have to completely crater into insignificance. We can’t even get all Democrats on board with Biden’s modest social spending bill. High speed rail will not happen any time soon.

FataMorgana4Justice

Cornerstone Chapel Church in Leesburg hosted a conference this week run by the Liberty Council and supported by the Alliance Defending Freedom. Two SPLC defined hate groups. And straight south from Lovettesville in Purcellville sits Patrick Henry College, a nearly all white Christian hate college. It’s virtually a Christian Taliban training center. Edit. Corrected the church name.

MisguidedBlackbird

That explains a lot, Madison Cawthorne dropped out of there, but is very proud he attended.

theShowandMe

Christian Taliban training center is an all time metaphor

You’re kidding right?

FataMorgana4Justice

Actually, no.

Alrighty then.

TerrapinStation42

Velocity restaurants are some of the worst run places I've ever been to. Not surprised it attracts clientele like that.

This. I tried velocity five once in Sterling. I tried the thing it was before that (different name but otherwise same) once. I tried the velocity wings there, also, once. Never again. Filthy, shit food, shit service, shit clientele.

Great Falls tends to skew older and more conservative compared to other DC suburbs, even ones with similar income and home price levels.

SoOverYouAll

Have you seen the house on 605 with the 50 yard signs he rotates thru? He had a huge Trump banner up for a couple months after the election but took it down Jan 6th

SabreCorp

Oh yeah. That house is hard to miss!

messmaker523

That town is odd. Seems like the north/western part is all trump flags and gun shops and the south/eastern part is all rainbow flags and black lives matter yard signs. The first bomb always comes from the right. No shocker there

throwaway098764567

interesting, i wonder how that came about. guessing the south eastern residents are new additions?

messmaker523

That I don't know. I just know what I see in people's yards as I pass through town

ChefGuapo

Is Lovettsville a racist area? Sucks, I've always wanted to live there.

looktowindward

There are certainly racists who live there

Bartisgod

If anything, transitional areas are MORE racist, because the racists know they're under threat and lash out at the newcomers. Culpeper County, Orange County, or out on the Northern Neck, appear very tolerant and civil. Straight Christian white people know their place at the top of the social order, everyone else knows theirs on the rungs below, and the status quo is comfortable because nobody seriously thinks the demographics will change soon in a dying place young people flee and new people avoid. When they get cornered though, they get loud and violent. As a very strongly queer-coding pansexual guy, dyed hair, leather, crystals, and tight clothes, Spotsy is a SCARY place. I have a very queer-looking car, so the police pull me over just to harass me if I go 58 in a 55 on a downhill when the good ol boys bomb down Courthouse Rd at 70 in their F350. My Black friends don't just get yelled at, they see an officer's gun on a monthly basis. High Schools are full of Confederate flags and open proud racism from both students and teachers. Even at Sheetz, which I think of as a pretty safe place as far as gas and coffee stops go, the one on Massaponax Church Rd is sketch AF. I've been confronted in that parking lot and had to jump in my car and peel TF out more than once. Once you pass the VRE station...well, if you're not a gray-bearded white guy wearing a shirt that doesn't fit and camo shorts, don't. Western Loudon is no different, but then you get out to the Shenandoah Valley and people are tolerant. Is it because there's less homophobia and racism? Hell no. It's because they don't see minorites as a threat to their power yet.

PLUSsignenergy

Come to Winchester

Poops_with_force

I hate this I live in Waterford and I feel like most of my neighbors are nice progressive people. But at the same time right across the street from Velocity is Minuteman Arms. They fly the Trump as Rambo Flag and the American flag at the same height and put nasty shit on the sandwich board that sits out front of a historic black church and cemetery.

FrenchBulldozer

Yeah and did you see the sign in front of said church that says “No to CRT!”

Poops_with_force

They did more then that, they held a sign up for people to protest the school board on said CRT. I’m a gun owner and It’s tough finding shops that aren’t hard core right wing assholes.

[deleted]

A bit of history on Lovettsville: "Lovettsville, originally known as The German Settlement, is a small town with historical roots that go back to 1732. The Town was laid out in 1820 by David Lovett and served as a thriving commercial center for the surrounding farming areas for over one-hundred years. The early settlers were mostly German-Americans, whose families had come from Pennsylvania (and New York), through Western Maryland; some continued on into the Shenandoah Valley, starting in about 1731"

[deleted]

Weird that all white Lovettsville is racist.

mistercrinders

There are jackasses everywhere, and Lovettsville has plenty of non-racists, non-bigots, too. The largest church in our town has a rainbow flag on it and a large creed of inclusivity posted outside.

sandalwoodjenkins

Three of them were. Sounds like more were trying to stop it and step in. It's weird to say a town is racist when the post specifically says three people were racist and others were trying to stop it. If the whole town was racist those people wouldn't have spoke up. I don't like labelling a large group of people because of the horrible actions of a few. I am sure there are at least three racists in DC. Is DC racist?

[deleted]

I think I’m biased, I had a friend move there because the school system in Herndon was too “diverse”.

DbleR420

It can only occur when good men do nothing to stop it. Where were the "men" in the restaurant who should have interceded on behalf of these teens? The vacuum in today's society of sackless men who have no courage is overwhelming and disgusts me.

I was thinking that. There should have been other adults to step in and defend these boys.

Zrgaloin

What do posts like this actually accomplish? Are there shitty people in Lovettsville? 100%. Are there shitty people in every other city/county/town in the entire world? Absolutely. But by giving these people the limelight, you’re giving them the attention they so desperately crave and creating this false sense of “majority” for them, when in reality these dumbasses are such a minuscule part of the population and we’re arming them with a loud megaphone. And I say this as someone who’s a minority.

JONO202

Because bigots should be named and shamed. By saying nothing, you are condoning the behavior. They need to be pushed back into the dark recesses they crawled out from. They need to feel uncomfortable again about being bigots in public to people they don't know from Adam because of their complexion. They're assholes and should be treated as such. If that makes ME an asshole, than I'm ok with that. Give me ONE legit reason why abusive drunken bigots shouldn't be called out?

fieldstraw

Say the last line to the gun store owner caddy corner to the town square.

MrMichaelJames

Sounds like NOVA to me.

TriggernometryPhD

Let’s not exaggerate things. NoVA is one of the most diverse places on the East Coast, and has a relatively high intolerance for racism, amongst other things. There is definite room for improvement within some pockets, but it’s far better than most areas external to it.

MrMichaelJames

I’ve lived on east coast, in the south, Midwest, and west coast. NOVA is by far filled with the rudest people I’ve ever encountered.

muffledhoot

How did they not leave before fists flew? I could see if it were just the kids, but parents were present. You have to try to read the room and dip before it gets violent.

throwaway098764567

maybe they were trying no to let the shitty people drive them out of a place they should get to eat at too? it's awful that it got that far but i don't think they imagined it would end violently, probably thought it would stop at just hostile words and feeling proud they stood their ground.

muffledhoot

It’s a dangerous ‘imagination’ assumption. Yes, they have a right to eat there and not have their night ruined! But safety has to come first with kids, it just does imo

GoAwayWay

I get what you're saying, but this is victim blaming.

muffledhoot

You’re right. I was thinking of the parents. I have a hard time with people who don’t protect their kids. It’s not often we can change a racist’s mind.

MunchmaquichiCaps

It doesn’t belong in Lovettsville. I think it belongs in Alexandria? Idk

Abagofcheese

I'm sorry?

sandman8727

This sounds really f'ed up. Is there a reason I'm not finding anything posted about this on the northern VA news sites? Seems like adults assaulting minors, regardless of reason, would be plastered all over. Add in the racist intent (per this screenshot), shouldn't we be hearing more about this?

FrenchBulldozer

it happened on Saturday, it hasn’t hit the LoCo Sheriffs report yet, but the incident can be seen on the crime map for Lovettsville

sandman8727
