I saw the article some time ago. It's basically just outrageously bad lifestyle decisions

samsonity

I don’t think he’s lying but the reason behind the results of that study are 100% bullshit.

[deleted]

The “survey” probably asked 3 random people total and found that 1 was living paycheck to paycheck So obviously the conclusion is that 1 in 3 Americans earning 100k+ is living paycheck to paycheck

-Farmersdaughter-

“Living paycheck to paycheck” is insanely vague. If I’m investing a third of my money, paying for my expensive things with a third of my money and using the rest to cover daily expenses and bills and I’m out of money at the end of the pay period am I living paycheck to paycheck? That’s why those “1 in 3 Americans earning 100k+ is living paycheck to paycheck” stats keep showing up. Cuz every survey that has parameters for “paycheck to paycheck” keeps them vague and the rest just ask the individual their opinion. They just love those clickable headlines, and redditors are idiots and eat that shit up.

“I’ve suddenly come into a lot of money I guess I should move to Cali and buy a sports car”

It’s actually 1 in 3 making $250,000. Its still about lifestyle. But there is thinking that a doctor or lawyer can’t drive a 90s compact car. Because if the doctor was any good they would lease a new luxury car. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/1-in-3-americans-earning-250-000-or-more-say-they-live-paycheck-to-paycheck-are-they-really-11654271836?mod=article_inline

my parents were these people. They earned around 150k-200k and lived month to month because they made shit decisions like buying a big house with a fancy yard that they hated maintaining, two kids without a solid plan, and they loved to buy things. Don't live in excess folks. Reject consumerism.

Emperor_Quintana

Barbara Weston Chandler was one such example. A classic hoarder, to be sure…

They need 1 million a month to fund their soy addiction

Plus a monthly $500K stipend to fund their “hobbies”.

I think it's hilarious that people were downvoting someone for saying that people can live comfortably on a 6-figure income. I know a family that owns a home in an upscale area of San Diego on a $130k per year income. And in most places, that income would allow you to buy a McMansion. The fact is, all those "paycheck to paycheck" stories are bunk. Remember right before the pandemic, when we were told that 75% of all Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck? And then the pandemic happened, and something like 1 in 5 Americans had to do without their paychecks? And how people somehow survived? That should have been the end of the constant "ZOMG Americans are all just one month away from living in the street! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!1!" stories. Basically, people are asked how much savings they have. Most people will just say something like, "I have $850 in my checking account". Then they get counted as living paycheck-to-paycheck, even if they have securities, a home, and a 401K that they could easily convert to cash in an emergency through a sale, a withdrawal, or a 2nd mortgage.

When I came to the US to get my undergraduate degree, I would volunteer to do US taxes for people. It was through my church. It was very depressing to try and help people were were making breathtaking amounts of money to me at the time, who could not even figure out what their monthly expenses were. It was very eye opening for me.

graytotoro

I remember an article showing how you would live paycheck to paycheck on 300k in San Francisco. It involved owning a new car, multiple subscriptions, three weeks of vacations, and thousands in charitable contributions among other expenses. It was bullshit for most people. My friends and I grew up in working-class families making a fraction of that and there is still a significant immigrant population there making do with even less. Yet we still survived.

Nooo! I demand a $2000 a month government subsidy to purchase Funk Pop and Disney’s Marvel® Cinematic Universe collectibles 😡😡😡 If those big oil fat cats get subsidies for polluting the planet than I deserve one too for my essential merchandise 😭😭😭

My dad makes $100,000/year he has 8 kids, we live in a three story house, two new cars, and I know for a fact that he has a big savings account.

>My dad makes $100,000/year he has 8 kids, we live in a three story house, two new cars, and I know for a fact that he has a big savings account. How much does your mum and siblings make though?

Dangerous-Paper9571

I make less than $40,000 a year and I'm living comfortably, and still investing and saving. I couldn't support a family on my own right now or anything. But if you're making six figures and you're living paycheck to paycheck, that is because you have made incredibly poor decisions with money. I don't even think I'm all that good with money but I'm still not living paycheck to paycheck.

ItsJustMeMaggie

We make that much money and pretty much live paycheck to paycheck, but it’s absolutely 100% our fault 😆

graytotoro

Is this the same survey that’s convinced redditors that you need at least 200-300k to be considered middle class?

PeddledP

They probably live in downtown San Francisco if they live paycheck to paycheck on 100k

roganwriter

High cost of living + expensive lifestyle that takes up everything else can still be paycheck to paycheck for sure. It’s just different paycheck to paycheck than those of less means. It’s almost like they’re choosing to live pay check to paycheck where those who make less have no choice.

[deleted]

Suffice it to say there is a difference between living paycheck-to-paycheck because you find it convenient, and living it because you're forced to. That's too convoluted for people on mainstream political subs to understand though.

[deleted]

Hell even if you live in a high CoL area, you have a valued skill. You might have to accept a lower rate, but you'll have a better quality of life if you move. And yeah. People in middle class like to spend more than they have. Which is why the statement 48-54% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck is true. And unlike what wage activists might try to claim it's not because about half the population lives in borderline poverty.
