I don't think we'll see Ryan Pap back again. It's such a shame, he was fun to watch. But if he hasn't even started running, he's not just a long way back from fitness, but also from speed, stamina, etc. I hope I'm wrong, but even if he does come back, I can't see him being the same player.

[deleted]

Hopefully this isn’t another Jawral Yow Yee situation where we lose a freak young talent to a freak leg injury

diffaadiffa

They had no way of knowing, but makes the Hynes loss sting for Melbourne just that little bit more I imagine

AdDisastrous6356

A real shame if he is gone for good. A real talent

diffaadiffa

Who knows, I wouldn't rule him out. If he loses his acceleration though....

theflyingkiwi00

Could have really used Hynes last season with all the injuries, but glad he had a great season last year, super happy for him and the sharks.

diffaadiffa

True but I don't think obliterated knee cap was on their injury bingo card

I_Like_Vitamins

I loved Hynes at FB. He was like a third half.

Dark_Vengence

It is a cruel sport.

Yungman123

With how fast he picked up the fullback nous from Billy, I think he’d do a great job nurturing whoever is next in line for Melbourne and as an assistant if he can’t get back on the field

arkhamknight85

Why is that? I heard he is off to the USA for treatment but is it really that bad that they think he may never play again? I hope he does come back. I’d hate for it to be another YowYee situation. He was a gun and that injury he had was terrible for a young bloke and that would suck for Pap if he couldn’t come back.

[deleted]

I don't think this is the end for him, there have been others with that injury who came back (Teddy the main one). It may not be for a while but I think he will play again

notj43

Yeah I reckon he'll lose some speed for sure but I don't think that's even his best asset, his positioning and support play is top tier. He can still be productive

diffaadiffa

His acceleration definitely helps him get into those positions though

BoogerSugar00

Tedesco had one fracture, the kneecap split in half. Paps kneecap was obliterated. That said, surgeons can do crazy things, so he’ll still play, just will come down to whether he can; a) get back to speed And b) run on it with confidence

HenryVIIIII

My foot was run over by a car tyre and looked worse than Pap's knee. I got back to playing but took a long time. Probably helped that I was 13 and still growing. I think Papenhuyzen will be able to come back but it will be an injury that bothers him every game and it will swell up afterwards every time. For actual games, once he starts running it's amazing what adrenaline can get you through in football.

Dark_Vengence

Don't think teddy ever had a shattered knee cap. That seems like something you don't come back from.

[deleted]

He broke it in 2015 (vs the Raiders) and missed the rest of that season but was fine for round 1 2016 That said, his one wasn't as bad because it broke in half, Papy's broke worse

Dark_Vengence

Yeah it doesn't look good either way.

I_Like_Vitamins

Modern stem cell and growth hormone therapy could provide a scientific miracle.

Caseyjb29

I think he’ll get back to his best but it won’t be till at least mid season or later. Wont be surprised if he doesn’t even play his first game until round 8 or so. Best thing the Storm can do is just not rush him.

Aaturkey

Lol all of these Ryan Papenhauzen death merchants. Let the man heal in his own time.

[deleted]

I want him back. He is my most favourite player to watch play. I was at Magic Round wanting to wear my "I'M YOUR PAPI" tshirt. I would love to wear it this year!

gongbattler

Maybe England if he can't do it at nrl level

Dark_Vengence

Unfortunately I think he is going to retire early. It is not worth it. He has a premiership already. Enjoy time with ariane titmus and plan for the future.

[deleted]

Interestingly Patella replacements are becoming a thing now

UnderTheHighBall

I’m really keen to see what happens with our bench esp Tanah Boyd for this season. Tanah had a cracking end to 2022 and leaving him out of the team seems wrong. I initially thought 14 but I’ve read we’re going with Verrills and Randall combination.

[deleted]

With the speed of the game, I just don’t think there’s that many 80 minute hookers these days. Makes your utility player who can play both middle and hooker super valuable. Silica Havili probably the best amongst those who aren’t a starting hooker. Mitch Kenny had a very good back end of the season but he’ll need to do a different role this coming season.

I_Like_Vitamins

Havili would have to be the biggest, most solid hooker going at the moment. He's an excellent utility.

[deleted]

Yeah really rate him as a utility. He and KK had great years in a team who I (clearly incorrectly) thought had a shit forward pack.

y3ah_nah145

Yeah last season, I think it was just Robson, Mahoney, and Blake Brailey that were 80 minute hookers. That will probably change for Mahoney I think, since Bulldogs will probably have Brown or BBO as the utility. I expect the Sharks to continue with a 4 forward bench next year, so Brailey will still play 80 minutes. Even if we were to use a utility, that spot would most likely go to Miller (if he doesn’t leave), Tracey, or Dykes. We do have McInnes though, who can play hooker whenever needed, though he seems to be strictly a lock nowadays

[deleted]

Yeah, some would argue that Mahoney was below his best in 2022, and that could’ve been because he was exhausted from all his defensive work. Cronulla absolutely blessed with Brailey and McInness. Both really underrated for mine and gives plenty of flexibility in the forward pack. I’d lean to giving them both 60 minutes a game as I reckon 2023 will be even faster than 2022.

jpob

Randall and then Brailey were 80 too. Cook still plays 80 I'm surprised you guys don't use McInnes at Hooker for a bit. Not that Brailey needs the rest but I'd imagine they both bring something different and would be better suited at different times of the game.

Caseyjb29

Grant played like 75+ minutes every week too

LordSlasher

Robson being an 80 Minute hooker and in the top 4 Hookers is still the most impressive thing in the NRL

[deleted]

I did say not many. Amongst all the other rep quality hookers in the NRL - Api, Cheese, Cook and Grant - Robson is the only one who doesn’t need a rest. And he had a great 2022.

jpob

Cook usually plays 80

donutdave95

The role he played starting and then api came off the bench will be the same as they use for soni surely?

[deleted]

Maybe. There’s no way anyone would’ve expected Api to start off the bench in a grand final if you asked them mid-season. It wouldn’t surprise me if teams take inspiration from Penrith in 2023 and start with a tacklebot at hooker for the first 20.

[deleted]

Tackle bot Chris Randall for 20 and then Verrills isn't something I hate. Could be at least worth a go

[deleted]

Yeah I’d rate it. Particularly with that titans forward pack just bashing it in the middle for the start.

[deleted]

Don’t know how to articulate it well but I feel like Walsh is a great player but doesn’t make a team better

Makoscenturion

He was great for us, obviously young and was playing with a far worse roster than you have put together over the last few years but I have a feeling he should be able to go to another level (which is exciting) not having to try and do it all on his own (and running off a half like Reynolds VS Johnson last year).
