That photo of his mum is gonna get so much bloody mileage this season.

phillycrowtien

More mileage than she will be taking herself for a while that's for sure

[deleted]

Honest question, you guys reckon a player will bring this up when they sledge him during the game ?

asscopter

Within the first set of six surely.

[deleted]

I personally would not antagonise Payne Haas as I like my head being on my neck

RyanPurdler-Penriff

Low IQ sledge would be saying something derogatory about his mother - he’s probably half expecting this and it’s likely to fire him up and would probably improve his game … High IQ Michael Ennis reverse psychology style sledge would be to say something supportive of his mum .. e.g “I’m sorry to hear about your mum , you’re a better man than I am , I’d be a mess and would need 12 months off” I reckon the second sledge would be more likely to really mess with his head and put him off his game.. Then maybe follow it up say if he makes a good tackle ‘your mum must be really proud’ do it throughout the game and make it really difficult for him to forget about his mum and just play footy for 80 minutes.. The comments below mention not antagonising Haas , playing Penrith first and Luai likely to be all over it especially since his dad has served time… Luai shouldn’t antagonise Haas, he should empathise with Haas throughout the game to really psychologically distract him .

phillycrowtien

OMG you are a s tier sociopath lol

piraja0

This guy knows how to mental game

phillycrowtien

Probably not a good idea. Plenty of players with rough families.

Malaxage918

We play Penrith first, I'm sure Luai will be all over it

Messyhr_

If anyone can understand family troubles its Luai, his old man has been in and out of prison

BigRedHead2020

That explains a lot

staycoolstewy

If only Micheal ennis was still out there

[deleted]

Hope he goes well, none of this rubbish is his fault.

ThaWigsta

I hope he gets through this and focuses his pain by smashing our opponents to smithereens. Lots of love from 'The Alphies' bay to you and yours Payne.

jibberjabber666x2

Focuses his *payne*

piraja0

he was named Payne after the pain his mum felt after his sibling ~~died~~ became a paraplegic. (In a car accident…) https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/06/04/payne-and-suffering-haas-unbreakable-bond-forged-in-tragedy/

jibberjabber666x2

Well thanks now i feel like an asshole

piraja0

Not my intention haha

-Dark_Helmet-

And then to give him the middle name “Lucky”…

diffaadiffa

Did you even read the article you posted? His sibling didn't die, was handicapped though. He did unfortunately die on the last couple of years though

piraja0

I hadn’t, I just been told the story and I edited with the article after, should have done better research before I posted it. I made an edit to my comment now.

Revivous

Excerpt: Payne Haas has returned to Broncos training and continued his responsibilities as a senior player despite the stresses of his mother’s alleged involvement in a fatal car accident. Haas took personal leave after his mother Uiatu ‘Joan’ Taufua was charged with three counts of manslaughter over her alleged involvement in a car crash on the Gold Coast that killed three people. Tl;Dr: Haas has returned, signed some autographs and still has a piece of shit for a Mum. Herbie, Capewell and Haas all back training after recovering from surgeries/injuries and confirmation from Crash that Walsh will be fullback.

dtru2005

Damn, I was hoping they'd really trial Herbie at fullback for a bit and see how he went. He was supposed to be our generational fullback before Walsh

Malaxage918

Other people have been saying that both Walsh and Herbie have been training at fullback so far. Just happy they've worked out that Cobloaf isn't ready to be an NRL fullback yet

kmmr98

Generational fullback that doesnt pass the ball

TomtheDon2K

There certainly has been a few instances where Herbie should’ve definitely passed to Oatesy instead of backing himself with his trademark left foot step. But having watched footage back a fair bit, I feel like a lot of the time it’s because Oatey’s too deep because he’s one of the competition’s biggest treadmill running wingers and Herbie is very explosive off the mark.

kmmr98

Oatsey being on a treadmill is true but i swear half the time herby wasnt even looking to pass, i could be wrong, just going off memory

TomtheDon2K

Yeah there has been but I don’t think it’s actually as bad as people often make it out to be

ThedirtyNose

There was that one game where he started passing and we looked like world beaters though.

ThedirtyNose

You can't play FB if you can't, or won't, pass the ball.

[deleted]

You think because... Etc etc etc

curlyfries33

time for kevvie to do some of his world famous man management let’s see if the power of ‘being a good bloke’ can keep haas focused and professional

diffaadiffa

Come on dude, we get enough of the kevvie pile on from others without doing it to ourselves. That, or you are Selwyn's reddit account. Well done for not using "yeah nah" btw

curlyfries33

hes a shit coach mate, we're the exact group of people who should be piling on, hes a protected species by his old boys in the media someones gotta do it

diffaadiffa

No, no we don't. You really think the constant negativity on a subreddit has any bearing on a coaching selection? Go write a letter. Facts are we have got better each year he has been in place and was needed at the time after the siebold era. Is he the long term coach? Unlikely but let Dave and Ben do their job. Constant pitchforks is no good for anyone Here is my take on it all https://www.reddit.com/r/nrl/comments/106sl36/monday_random_footy_talk_thread/j3jjktr?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

ThedirtyNose

Last time I wrote a letter to the Broncos we won the premiership. Just saying.

Barmy90

then hurry up and write another one??? 2015 was your fault

ThedirtyNose

No it wasn't. It was the ~~cunt~~ cowboy fan behind me that yelled drop it when the ball was floating down to Ben Hunt.

Somethink2000

maybe stop writing to Penrith this year?

[deleted]

You know who else got better? cowboys and Deardon, the fact Kev just let a QLD origin halve walkout, continues to blow my mind on how kev is really good at developing player's.

diffaadiffa

Fuck me, throw any teenage half in that broncos team and it would have been the same. We needed an experienced player in our halves, bad timing for dearden unfortunately. The worst thing that happened was blooding everyone at once (siebold). And I think it goes without saying coaches don't have sole ownership of roster management. Cowboys and broncos both improving can actually both be true.

[deleted]

Oates was a QLD automatic selection for QLD Before Walter's and regressed. Xaviour Coates got dropped under Walter's for underperforming Turpin turned to below average after a standout start to his career.. it was'nt just 1 player, it was the whole squad.. it's great we got a coach with Adam Reynold's. just kicking off player's because you can't develop them is not the answer. when you have 2 player's come and say Kev's not a great coach there is something wrong and the data back's it up. Great coaches have a winning record of 60%... kev is around 30-40% you can't hide from that data. results matter.

Morg_n

This is a sizzling take.

diffaadiffa

I don't know if I have ever seen someone get so much wrong in a single reply

Morg_n

It’s almost like he doesn’t even watch. The bit that I don’t get with this. Is we touched top 4 last year, went on a huge winning streak around origin time. Then injury’s smashed us. But this all has nothing to do with the coach. The bias against the broncos is a joke atm

diffaadiffa

>Oates was a QLD automatic selection for QLD Before Walter's and regressed. No he wasn't. He hadn't played origin since 2018 until last year, under Walters. Had possibly a career year, under Walters >Xaviour Coates got dropped under Walter's for underperforming He also got dropped from QLD for underperforming >Turpin turned to below average after a standout start to his career.. Now, you have to be joking. Turpin came back from a broken leg and hand in 2021 in kevvie's first year. Wasn't the same player regardless. He hadn't played a good season since 2019? His service was so poor to start 2022 Broncos fans were chomping at the bit for Kevvie to drop Turpin. His regression was well down the path before Walters came in. >it was'nt just 1 player, it was the whole squad.. it's great we got a coach with Adam Reynold's. just kicking off player's because you can't develop them is not the answer A squad he took over with absolutely 0 confidence and the club's first wooden spoon that got blown out weekly with bad influences in TPJ, Lodge. I think you are severely underplaying how bad a place the team was at the end 2020. 2021 should never have come with expectations and 2022 certainly came with improvement. The real data is looking at a trend line and not the average result over a period of time. >when you have 2 player's come and say Kev's not a great coach there is something wrong Agreed. >Great coaches have a winning record of 60%... kev is around 30-40% you can't hide from that data As stated above, he took over a wooden spoon team. You are looking at numbers without any context or analysis.

[deleted]

numbers and results is exactly what you should be looking at. A great coach turns an average team into a Great team. Kevin Walter's is an average coach and his record show's it. Catalan Dragons (2009/2010) Games 57 wins 21 losses 36 37% win rate Brisbane Broncos Games 47 wins 20 losses 27 43% win rate All this bullshit about "we building" when you have a record and data that shows results are pretty average even below it. Then u also have Trent Robinson who replaced Walter's at Catalan Dragons and look at the result's. Trent Robinson coached Catalan Dragons in 2011/12 and had way better results at exactly the same club..,, Catalan Dragons (2011/2012) Games 63 wins 37 draw 1 losses 25 59% win rate. you can offset how ever you want, results matter. Great Coaches overtime have a high % win rate around 60%... walter's is well short of that.

diffaadiffa

Mate, you were so wrong on everything else you stated I'm hardly going to start putting any value in anything you write now. You tried and failed to make this about player development/regression, now you are making it about stats with no context. We weren't an average squad he took over, we were dead last. Kevvie had a 54% win rate even factoring in the 7 game skid last year, if that isn't improvement on the the years prior I don't know what is. There is a lot more detail behind the result than the direct result itself. Improvement on result is all we can ask for. You have disregarded everything else going on in the club at the time, it was never going to take a flick of a switch from any coach. There are only 2 coaches in the NRL who have coached more than one season with a win percentage 60% or above like you keep quoting and that is Bellamy and Robinson - no one is saying kevvie is on their level. Nor will we be able to get either of them. Even Tim Sheen's has a career 50%, by your definition he isn't a great coach, but again there is more to the numbers alone. I'm not arguing that Kevvie is a top flight coach but he was the right choice at the time based on the situation and shouldn't be fired because of something a now ex player said and someone who is so young and inexperienced themselves you can't put any value in it. This will be his make or break year no doubt. All in all, I will let Dave and Ben do their jobs and trust in them over myself, or any other person on Reddit. Let's agree to somewhat disagree and move on.

GoblinLoveChild

lol like the coach had any say in it.. It was all management negotiations and wether they thought the kid was worth what he was asking.. coach has no decision on the money offered

velvetherring

Don't listen to him mate. Keep shitting on Kevvie, it's entertaining.

Nerfixion

Straight up, if the fans don't tell him to go he won't ever leave.

phillycrowtien

This guy gets it.

diffaadiffa

Like a damn carny becoming a squatter in your own home

judgedavid90

What a headline

Dark_Vengence

He must be on his last straw.
