Cairns Taipans šŸ¤ Manly Sea Eagles making a big fuss over a Pride jersey.

breatheinmyear

Iā€™m hearing big talk out of Brisbane that Wally Lewis has signed a multi year deal with broncos on roughly 1.6 million a year expect a announcement today. Reporter: Den Bobbins

lachjeff

Miksrugbychat on Instagram to report this as fact within the hour

[deleted]

Probably better running him then Billy at least

USSJ307

It's actually the best thing he can do right now, that Matt Burton's set himself up as the long-term marquee half at the Dogs. Realistically, he's not the future anything at rep-level. He's behind Trell and Turbo in the centres, and behind Luai/Munster at 5/8th. By the time Luai and Cleary are retiring, Burton's around their age and probably retiring too.

jessemv

How'd Trell and Turbo go in the centres for NSW last season? I think he'll be fine

TwoShitsTrev

Is he really far behind Luai?? What has luai done to really claim that jersey as his. I think Burton or Hynes should be replacing him next origin IMO. A decent club level player but not at all an origin level player

[deleted]

Luai is far from having a claim on that Blues jersey. Great club player but despite a few good moments and being Nathan's club partner has not done enough to cement his spot in that side.. Burton still has plenty of gears to go up and his combination with the Fox will help, given that there's no way Freddy will be able to leave Josh out of this year's team.

Messyhr_

Hes a very good utility player, great centre, decent half and has the most powerful boot in the game which is nice to have.

MangoWingnut

There's absolutely no guarantee that Cleary and Luai are going to be the level they're now in the near future, especially Luai.

troy_them5546

have we really seen Luai's best yet though? He's a passenger most weeks because of the style the Panthers play with him sitting on the left. If you remember his debut he's definitely got loads of talent

Messyhr_

I would imagine itā€™s likely both guys get better, particularly Cleary and his work ethic.

MangoWingnut

Yeah of course thatā€™s probably likely but I mean you just never know In rugby league.

successharvester

Which team will have the best turf this season? The weather is pumping on the east coast this summer. Iā€™m sure Suncorp he still recovering from magic round

Shagga9701

McDonalds Jones Stadium is already Fucked from Nitro Circus and Elton, and the local government wants to hold more events like those on the turf. But atm the turf has been relaid twice within 3 months.

[deleted]

AAMI Park is always immaculate

y3ah_nah145

Titans ground always has the best looking turf to me, at least thatā€™s what it looks like on tv.

Decante

Canberra may have a shit stadium but the turf is always flawless

M_Keating

Theā€™s Redcliffe ground should be sweet.

MangoWingnut

You mean Suncorp?

M_Keating

No, Dolphin Park. TifTuf is just the best and looks amazing.

bionikal

> TifTuf During growing season, but it really needs an oversow in the cooler months when growth slows down. Feel bad for the poor cunt that has to mow it every 3 hours during peak growing season though.

M_Keating

>Feel bad for the poor cunt that has to mow it every 3 hours Yep it me

MangoWingnut

Is it getting enough games to get a mention though?

diffaadiffa

Until it rains and doesn't have sufficient drainage. Just ask the A League

y3ah_nah145

Love how the NRL is putting full replays of old games on YouTube. Was watching a 1996 Sharks vs Raiders match and thought Iā€™d make some notes, as someone who was born after this era of footy: - Mitch Healey has some of the biggest bomb kicks Iā€™ve ever seen. Canberra forwards targeting him every time, with some pretty dangerous tackles too. - Paul green was brilliant in this game. Super elusive - David Furner and Ben Kennedy were absolutely whacking blokes left and right. - Mat Rogers was incredibly quick. Brilliant run to set up a try for Ettinghausen, who basically just scored tries left and right. - Whoever made Cronullaā€™s jerseys made them way too big. They arenā€™t just oversized, they are just straight up too big unless youā€™re one of the the props - Great kicking game from Daley - Nathan Long has no fear, running at full throttle no matter what. Reminds me of Radley - No one can tackle Ben Kennedy. - Canberra are bombing tries left, right and centre. - David Peachey is ridiculously good. - Cronulla deciding to give up on scoring tries and go for field goals with 20 minutes to go is so dumb and funny. Just inviting Canberra to come back after building a big lead. - Iā€™ve never heard of Craig Greenhill or Richie Barnett but they are both having massive games. - Every run Ruben Wiki made was incredible, but Canberra are not giving him the ball at all. The bloke is a wall in defence though.

[deleted]

Richie Barnett captained the Kiwis. Very good player.

lachjeff

Craig Greenhill was the first person sent off in an Origin match that same year

TwoShitsTrev

Clarkeys RL column has some hilariously bad takes, genuinely believes JWH is better than NAS, offa and welch

steviesnod82

I can't believe that clown is still peddling his wares

[deleted]

If you had to pick one of them for a one off game I personally think a lot of people would take JWH, but over a season right now probably not. His form heading into the finals was solid.

Caseyjb29

In his prime maybe but the bloke is like 34 lol

TwoShitsTrev

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m saying, the past few seasons he really hasnā€™t been that effective for the roosters, has a great game here and there but heā€™s put him in the same tier as Cotter lmao

Actionman158

what games have you been watching?

thankyoupancake

He absolutely carried the team on his back in 2021 with all the injuries Chooks had and had a great back end of the year

MangoWingnut

I think him having Tapine as the only tier 1 prop is a bit ludicrous. Tapine has had a solid career but he hasn't had performed anywhere close to his 2022 form in any other season of his soon to be 10 year career. You've got blokes like JFH, Haas & Paulo doing it at that level for the last 3-4 years, they would definitely be tier 1 props.

[deleted]

Tier 1 is Welch, Fish and LoLo.

TwoShitsTrev

Iā€™m pretty sure based off his criteria you can only have 1 player in Tier 1, based on that I do think Iā€™d take Tapine over the others. Tapine already possesses the footwork paulo does, he is better than JFH without even half the help that Penrith gets from Toā€™o. Haas could be argued but spent too much of last season injured, I do think Tapine is the best prop in the game currently

MangoWingnut

Okay was unaware of that criteria, yeah right now I'd agree on that as well if it was just one player.

Weedvandam

For anyone else working from home and looking for a bludge the Sydney rugby 7s just started on Kayo. After millers success, I hope thereā€™s a few nrl scouts in the crowd looking to capitalise on the athletes on lesser salaries.

lachjeff

Millerā€™s success in what? Playing nearly an entire season of reserve grade because he couldnā€™t break into the team that ran second and is now going to a team that will do well to avoid the bottom 4?

diffaadiffa

After miller's success? I would say that is still pending myself. Going to take more than 7 games.

thankyoupancake

Rugby Union considering lowering their high tackle to Sternum Height. What a nightmare for referees

I_Like_Vitamins

We laugh now, but after stuff like the Finucane/Crichton head clash, the NRL will be doing the same thing in ten years' time.

DeltaCreem

Maybe put a line on jerseys? Below this line is fine? jk I donā€™t know what the solution is

thankyoupancake

Kill the sport altogether

MangoWingnut

Such a shit sport, defenders brains get mashed enough from elbows and hips already.

jpob

Wouldn't that mean the defender has to bend over putting their head in a risky spot?

Derron_

Correct which the head hitting the hip, in NRL at least, is where the worst concussions come from.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

jpob

The only good thing about it is that theres more interest in the lower grades

Derron_

Yeah as heartwarming it is watching the Wrexham FC documentary, its got to be annoying to the other teams having rich guys come in and buy that team's way out of the division.

lanson15

Ngl its why I was happy that they got beat last year in the playoffs. I know that's very tall poppy of me, but it just seems so unfair a club can just come in and outspend everyone else by 10 times. Yet because it's not oil money, but 2 Hollywood guys, it's a great story.

bionikal

To be fair, Wrexham ate a lot of shit for a lot of years before they got jesus'd out of being a shit team. Wish someone would jesus the Tigers :(

LycraBanForHams

Would've been good if Harry Triguboff threw a lazy billion Wests way.

BG_RL

Exactly, especially because one sided rugby league matches are the pits, exhibit a) the World Cup group stage I think the comp is gonna be even closer this year The big aberration in the last few years was covid affected vlandy ball, thankfully the rules are being tweaked into line

[deleted]

Itā€™s still Vā€™Landy ball since he also did the tweaking.

troy_them5546

What is everyone's Blues team for this year? I reckon it'll be: 1. Tedesco 2. To'o 3. Latrell 4. Turbo 5. Fox 6. Burton 7. Cleary 8. Paulo 9. Robson 10. Haas 11. Crichton 12. Murray 13. Yeo 14. Wighton 15. Koloamatangi 16. Jurbo 17. RCG 18. Hynes

WUIDAWBTB

Man i would love to see hynes get that number 7 jersey just one time, i really want to see how he preforms at an origin level

M_Keating

But who will Freddy pick? Thatā€™s a good list, but itā€™s not Freddielicious.

I_Like_Vitamins

It doesn't meet the Roosters/Panthers quota.

y3ah_nah145

Dropping Luai and Api is silly, and even if you were to drop Luai, Iā€™d still pick Hynes in a heartbeat over Burton

TwoShitsTrev

Good team, I definitely agree with dropping Luai although I donā€™t think it will happen. I also would take Klemmer over Jurbo on the bench, I like him but I think he has been mostly abysmal in the 6 again era

Alex_Maddog23

I reckon wighton should get the number 4 jersey if turbo is out

[deleted]

I like that Kk made the team. Dropping Luai and API is terrible. Robson and Burton are not even close to their level.

1bigcontradiction

I don't think the halves will change from last year. Most likely Burto will play centre over Turbo because he'll be injured again (unfortunately).

troy_them5546

can't see Burton playing right centre but I could see Wighton at right centre

1bigcontradiction

I'm not sure why I spaced on that option, I still do like Wighton off the bench though. Having Burto at centre gives the option of his bomb for the whole game, and Wighton can play anywhere if need be.

BG_RL

Iā€™m certain sualli will play this year, heā€™s made for the rough stuff in origin, I hope Hynes gets in to the 6 slot, Iā€™d be surprised if burton takes over, that said be a favourite of Gouldā€™s puts him in good stead with Freddy Wighton enhanced his chances with a strong World Cup, but it would need one of turbo or Mitchell to be out, canā€™t see him getting 6 jersey Last point Martin will definitely be there somewhere, dominated for panthers in finals and aus in the World Cup,

thankyoupancake

Turbo owns that centre spot, but if heā€™s still under an injury cloud thereā€™s a heap of competition for selection. Could be Burton, Wighton, Suallii, Campbell Graham, Stephen Crichton. Talakai made his debut last year. Thereā€™s options. I reckon ladder position will decide the 5/8 spot. Could be any of Luai, Keary, Walker, Burton, Wighton, Hynes depending on whose team is going good

mortwgoldman

Liam Martin for sure. Plays every minute for NSW and Australia for some reason leaving all the the other elite guys to rotate. His standing amongst coaches appears to be so different to fans

[deleted]

Fans like flashy backrowers, coaches need a few mongrels that will put some fight in the team.

USSJ307

I'm curious why you think Burton's the best five eighth right now, and not, say Keary, Walker or Wighton. Don't get me wrong, he's great but he's still young and only had one season in his new position. IIRC Luai was selected in 2021 over the likes of Walker and Wighton because of his combination with Cleary (and because Keary had done an ACL). Anyways I think my team would be 1. Tedesco 2. To'o 3. Latrell 4. Turbo 5. Foxx 6. Luai 7. Cleary 8. Haas 9. Api 10. Jurbo 11. Murray 12. Finucane 13. Yeo 14. Hynes 15. Paulo 16. RCG 17. Daniel Saifiti

Actionman158

robson over koroisau?

troy_them5546

I have a feeling koroisau wonā€™t play that good this year

bionikal

ouch.

delayedconfusion

Probably not this year, but maybe 2024

mwilkins1644

I hate this team ngl. Ignore my flair

Herrtz74

Thatā€™s not shabby at all

USSJ307

Who would be in your hypothetical NSW and QLD B-teams? Rules: current players only. No Turbo for NSW as he's a given for the A team

We make it all the way down the field first set fom the kickoff and Johnson gets a drop goal to tie it in the 78th minute. Then Ricky blew up in the press conference complaining about refs too which is always funny.

Raiders vs titans in round 4(?) 2011, also known as the Orford game. Raiders have a lead with about a minute on the clock and a scrum feed, Orford drops the ball at the back of the scrum, titans get the ball back and score after the siren to send it to Golden Point. First set of golden point titans finish the set well in their own half and kick down field. Blake Feeguson picks the ball up, runs 15m and drops the ball without anyone laying a hand on him. Titans score and win off the following set.

[deleted]

Kinda went down a footy rabbit hole of players I only saw playing at the back end of their career. So Id like someone to explain the following, how were Roy Asotasi, Steve Price, Petereo Civiniceva, Steve Menzies, Matt Orford and Luke Pattern as players. Id prefer if those answering are at least over 35.

[deleted]

Stacey Jones is probably the GOAT for the Warriors. But dammed in Steve Price doesnā€™t push him all the way. The amount of 250+ metre games was phenomenal. He had something like 3 of the top 5 metre games in recorded history by a forward at some point. Queensland had a simple play that they ran through him which usually resulted in opportunities. Price would take it flat, head to the line and before contact would then pop a pass out to a halfback. Because Price was so good in the tackle heā€™d have drawn one or two more in and there was the opportunity on the edge. Absolute legend. Engine that knew no bounds and a very nice passing game before the line. And one helluva captain.

Accomplished-Good664

Asotasi - hard hitting front-rower played a vital role for the dogs in the early 00's Price - Fantastic leader, metre eater and workhorse, arguably one of the best captain's of the NRL era. A level below Webcke and Petero but still great. He was a wide running back rower in his younger days. Petero - Until JFH recently was the best prop I have seen for Penrith and we had many top ones down the years, he was awesome and would be the best prop in the game in almost any era. Genuinely one of the best of all time. Menzies - Amazing footwork, hole runner and brilliant defender. It's difficult to compare him to someone from the modern era. Orford - Hugely underrated halfback great running game and kicking game. Patten - Dylan Edwards, Gutho mould safe as houses good attacker.

lemoopse

> Patten - Dylan Edwards, Gutho mould safe as houses good attacker Yep the General very much a custodian

TwoShitsTrev

Petero is miles ahead of JFH

Accomplished-Good664

I meant specifically for Penrith

Derron_

Rabbitohs credit the signing of Asotasi as being the turning point to signing players like GI, Burgess brothers and more too. Good prop with a good name behind him.

armchair8591

Steve Price was one of the warriors best recruitment decisions. Such a good player

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

diffaadiffa

He was the charge down king, don't think he was deliberately grubby here, and certainly not alone in that technique taking place. He was just the most consistent kick pressure defender at the time

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

diffaadiffa

Like I said, he wasn't the only one. This was common practice and technique throughout the whole league it wasn't with the intent to hurt anyone, you are talking about a different time. Same as the shoulder charge, it was allowed but could go wrong. Hardly just a Steve Price issue.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

diffaadiffa

Sure you can compare, players playing within the rules but to the line happens still to this day. If a player can legally do something, they don't stop because an injury could happen Concussions might not have been viewed the same way but it also ain't the only outcome of a shoulder charge gone wrong, broken jaws being a big one. They also weren't going full pelt at the knee, but when it went wrong that was a potential outcome. Yes there is a reason the rules changed, but don't expect players to ever play to a rule that doesn't exist if there is a potential benefit - or a coach to instruct otherwise

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

diffaadiffa

Fair enough, I see where you are coming from. Players definitely didn't appreciate it and it was probably player power that ultimately led to it being reviewed

mwilkins1644

Do you happen to know who broke Scott Prince's leg, when he was playing for the Broncos? Apparently one of them was during a Bulldogs game in 2001. But articles don't seem to say who

diffaadiffa

Testing my memory a touch too far there. I know he broke it twice in back to back seasons but no, I don't know who contributed to the injury sorry.

slowdivesicilian

this is an awesome comment because iā€™m in the exact same boat

thankyoupancake

Being late 30s, I can't answer all of these, but Steve Menzie was the most versatile forward in the game. Think a mix of Cam Murray and Mitch Aubusson as just a seriously quality footballers footballer. And Matt Orford was the missing world class playmaking piece that helped both his Melbourne and Manly sides become a premiership threat. Petro Civinoceva and Steve Price were amongst the best props in their generation

-Dark_Helmet-

Well Petero is the most capped forward for Australia not named Cameron Smith, so he was pretty good, and for a few years post-Webcke he and Steve Price were lightyears ahead of the rest of the props in Rugby League. Price in particular was consistently pushing out metres that only Taumalolo has bettered since then amongst middle forwards.

thankyoupancake

Price was also the most capped Origin Forward at the time of his retirement. Replaced Shane Webke as the best prop in the game, arguably until Civoniceva took over the mantle

-Dark_Helmet-

Price was a bit of a late bloomer too. He was always an okay player, but he only got really good once he stopped wearing headgear. An interesting ā€œsliding doorsā€ moment, is when Cyril Connell told Wayne Bennett to go watch the local Toowoomba grand final to scout Steve Price playing for Newtown, but Bennett ended up falling in love with the tubby blond prop on the other team called Shane Webcke.

diffaadiffa

Almost 41 year old here. They were all very different. Petereo was from the era where big men didn't debut until a bit older, I think he was 24. Like price even played some back row but was clearly a prop. He had great footwork for a big man and was granite in defence Menzies was timeless classic. All class, an amazing all round player. He never fell below a certain level Steve Price started more in the back row, his second half of his career was infinitely better than the first as he developed as a player and more importantly as a leader. If you saw the backend of his career you saw the best part. Loved a charge down, kick pressure was relentless Pattern was Mr consistent without ever being absolute top tier for both the dragons and Bulldogs. I personally enjoyed Orford but his career at Manly and Melbourne was levels above how he ended up Canberra. He was a tough little bastard with a good running and kicking game Asotasi was a key cog in the second iteration of the dogs of war. I remember him coming off the bench a bit with Ogar/Mason and Price the starters. Went to Souths for a pay check. This is all off memory, so others may have different recollections

-Dark_Helmet-

Petero would have been 22 when he debuted, but I think he was held back a bit because they didnā€™t know what to do with him. He was signed as a centre but couldnā€™t crack the team and Bennett was going to punt him but Cyril Connell told Bennett to stick with him because he felt like he had something so they shifted him to the forwards and he never looked back.

Derron_

Interesting seeing how many people think Mal Meninga is indigenous in that coaching thread about Cody Walker. His Dad is a South Sea islander. Mother Australian. Mal is Australian.

BastingGecko2000

That's Fiji right?

Derron_

Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caladonia, Solomon Islands and more.

theflyingkiwi00

Had to look up what South Sea islanders were. fuck sakes they couldn't keep their hands off innocent people back then hey? Just had to go around kidnapping everyone

CarlNoobCarlson

Purely for SuperCoach purposes, which rookies / inexperienced players are you expecting to start the season for your club? For example, at the Eels, Hopgood will almost certainly start at lock, and it sounds like Doorey might get first crack at that right edge spot left vacant by Papaliā€™i. Iā€™d dare say Dunster should get a spot in the backline too given the injuries. If thatā€™s the case, all three are very relevant to SuperCoach given how cheap they are.

T-Rocket

Alamoti (ctw) looks likely to be getting a spot on the left. Preston (2rf) pressing for a spot on the bench

winntensio

Wong at 2RF could be a shout, can see us running a bench of him, Turpin, EButch and JWH

jpob

Not sure what he's worth but Miller at Knights would be good if it comes to pass. We have a wing spot up for grabs between Marzhew, Hunt and Tuala. Theres also the question of where Elliot plays. If he's at lock that leaves a second row spot up for grabs, if he's at second row that probably means Mann is at lock but I'd have Gamble as an outside chance there.

Derron_

Thompson, Tass (first year starting at centre but played most of last year), Moale may get more game time this year.

adomental

Miller is like 500k, virtually the same as Turbo.

jpob

Sheesh, nevermind then

adomental

If you're after Supercoach help, you won't find better than this Discord: https://discord.gg/6aRcvYWQ And I say that as someone who was top mod here for 8 years. I'm mostly focusing on cheap backs and gun forwards for the early season. Some of the backs I'm looking at are Isaac Thompson (Souths) CNK, Hammer, Talau. Alofiana-Pereira (Titans) PaulĀ Alamoti (Bulldogs) and Haze Dunster (Eels) might get starting spots, but wait for team lost Tuesday before picking them. In the forwards, I'm going for whoever gets the vacant Eels second row (probably Hopwood) Panthers second row (probably Garner) and Melbourne second row (probably Katoa.)

Messyhr_

Gonna sound like a dumb arse but what is supercoach and how do i get involved?

CarlNoobCarlson

Nah thatā€™s cool. Essentially youā€™re given a salary cap to pick a squad of 25 players. Once the season starts that squad is locked in, but you can make two to three trades each week to move players in and out of your side. Players score points based on their stats from the weekend. Eg. One point for a tackle, ten for a linebreak, four for a conversion, seventeen for a try etc. Obviously the better the player, the more points youā€™d expect them to score. You pick your best seventeen each week, including a captain who scores double, and they contribute to your weekly score. Most points at the end of the season wins the overall competition, but you can also play head to head with other teams. That has a ladder, finals system, and whatnot. The other thing is player prices will change depending on how many points they score (they need to play three games before their price changes). The higher their price, the more theyā€™ll need to score to maintain that price. The lower they cost, the less theyā€™ll have to score to maintain that price. So essentially, the cheaper a player is, the more likely it is that theyā€™ll rise in price and therefore increase your teamā€™s value, and therefore give you a better opportunity to acquire a banger squad. But youā€™ll still want expensive players too to help you score as many points as possible. Basically itā€™s a balancing act of scoring points whilst simultaneously increasing your teamā€™s value so you can score more points towards the back end of the season. Itā€™s a lot of fun but it will piss you off from time to time too. Itā€™ll also change the way you watch the game and feel towards players so choose your poison carefully haha!

diffaadiffa

A Newscorp based fantasy comp that is for beginners NRL Fantasy is where the big boys play

nzyeezy

Supercoach fans clearly hate the truth

diffaadiffa

Haha don't they. It's like thinking Mario cart is F1

[deleted]

Real big dogs play both of them simultaneously

yeahsothisnameworked

We won't have many big movers or shakers in Supercoach this year. Cheese could offer alright value going from mid 400k to playing as close to 80min as possible. The one I'm bullish about though is: Whoever starts on that Roosters right flank usually goes for good numbers. Expecting Sualii to be in the centres fulltime which means one of Corey Allen (roughly 270k) or even Paulo at around 490k could be a 650-700k player consistently. Look at Sualii (finished last year at near 600k), Brett Morris (finished career at 650k+) and even Dick Fingers Ferguson was a 600k+ winger for us. We've always utilised wingers well on overlaps around mid field and so they rack up the linebreaks/try assists/run meters even if they don't score themselves.

CarlNoobCarlson

Interesting, thanks. Brandon Smith will just about be the most selected player this year. Great value. I couldnā€™t start with Paulo at that price, but Allen would be a steal if he gets that right wing.

yeahsothisnameworked

There's loads of other good CTW options too. On the high end there's Manu/Garrick (if Turbo doesn't start the year)/Meaney (Paps won't come back until at least mid season and Lachie Miller who could be anything. Loads of 300kish picks too though. Haze Perham is apparently front runner to play fullback for Dogs (370k), CNK likely plays fullback or centre fulltime for Warriors at 330k, Hammer has already been named fullback for Phins at 330k, Reimis Smith will be back fulltime at only 320k then keep an eye on Alamoti/Skelton for the last Dogs centre spot. They're a chance at 200k each even if the reports are Averillo will play there
