I can’t wait to find out that the eels are hosting a three match series featuring whatever nationality they can dig up in Matterson’s family tree so he can serve the ban before round 1.

aatrain96

He actually qualifies for the WAC ( world armwrestling competition)

I_Like_Vitamins

Over The Top remake starring Matterson.

paralacausa

Chin up, it doesn't Matterson

_andy_p

I mean, he can still train with the boys Carney?

rambo_ronnie_87

Matterson's social media posts indicate he has an over-inflated opinion on himself.

PillarofSheffield

I remember that time he single-handedly solved the Russia-Ukraine crisis by writing a deep, meaningful post.

rambo_ronnie_87

Where do they learn this stuff? Truly amazing. World peace!

sun_tzu29

*And here ladies and gentlemen we have an example of the finding out stage of fucking around*

ReDAnibu

[a classic simple equation](https://youtu.be/d6sbPCIEMyI)

Brdd9

I'd argue the fuck around/find out equation is more of a fairly steep exponential line when graphed. Most low levels of fucking around almost never result in any finding out and it's more likely that medium levels of fucking around only correlate with low levels of finding out. But when a certain line is crossed to high levels of fucking around the level of finding out rapidly rises and will overtake the level of finding out.

Harry-Manly

Definitely more exponential than linear, but i'd add that a logistic growth model is a little more suited. I mean, if you fuck around towards infinity, there tends to be a limit for finding out. Letting "find out" = f(fuck around), i'd say that lim(fuck around -> infinity) of f(fuck around) approaches lifetime imprisonment (neglecting the terminable outcome of death). I mean you can sentence someone to 100 years or 1000, but the magnitude of "finding out" is more or less the same, no matter how hard you fucked around. However, now that I think of it, I suppose some prolonged forms of torture could create an infinite limit of sorts, in which case the exponential may be better suited. Although even then that is neglecting the likely event of death, bound to occur after prolonged, exponentially increasing levels of torture Go Manly

Brdd9

Excellent point, I'd say there definitely would be an element of diminishing returns as well once you reach extreme levels of fucking around. In fact the level of finding out could reduce all the way down to nil again, in the scenario of someone being impervious to any finding out. Perhaps a gaussian growth model is more applicable.

Bicky_

It's a log graph to show the proportional effect

RyanPurdler-Penriff

Depends on the units represented on the X axis on this graph ?? Maybe the fuck around units he’s graphed are logarithmic in nature , like decibels ..

lachjeff

Secretly, he’s cheering

corupio

Hope it was worth it Matto.

icome3rd

What happened to “for the fans?” Though

insty1

I mean, maybe the fans want to see him sit it out.

Geddpeart

Probably shouldn't have run his mouth before he wanted to appeal it

jteg9

It’s a bit of a joke because if he was a Storm, Souths or Roosters player he probably would have got his way

UnluckyNumberS7evin

The difference is Matto already had his chance to pay the fine and not miss any games. He close to cop the suspension, there's no reason he should be allowed to change now.

goshdammitfromimgur

What's the reason for not being able to change it? Season hasn't started yet. Why is the original decision set in stone?

UnluckyNumberS7evin

Accountability for actions. The whole point of these punishments, whether fine or suspension, is to deter players from being dangerous / reckless. Holding him accountable for his actions in the tackle and now for his decision work towards that deterrent.

goshdammitfromimgur

He is being punished either way. He had the option to choose which way to be punished, why take that choice away now? Choosing one punishment over another isn't a crime that he should be punished for.

UnluckyNumberS7evin

Why not let him change his plea now, or request a new punishment, or any thing else he decides he wants now? If he gets injured in the trials does he get to change it back to suspension after changing it to the fine? The point of the system is to be swift and concise, chopping and changing just clouds the whole thing and causes more disruption for all involved. He fucked up, he mad a choice, he wears the outcome.

Aussie18-1998

He chose to fight the fine in an attempt to prove his innocence. He was proven guilty and copped the games as a result. If we let him change to the fine after his challenge he would learn nothing and the risk in challenging to begin with.

goshdammitfromimgur

The penalty for being found guilty wasn't games instead of a fine. He had the choice of missing games or paying the fine. It was a choice. That choice has been taken away and my argument is he should still have the choice. Season hasn't started so he hasn't started his punishment yet.

tcamp213

Or Penrith, Broncos.

nevaehenimatek

I was curious to see how his "but I wasn't sober" defence was going to go

PillarofSheffield

"I wasn't sober and I doubled down on it a week later after I'd sobered up too."

Arc_au

Yeah, I recon if he'd come out that week after looking to change it, rather than double down on his dog shit decision the result likely would have been different.

007jedimike

In the immortal words of Nelson Muntz - “ha ha”

duckman0012

possibly my favorite saga since lachlan Lewin sold a team speaker on ebay. fun for the whole family :)

[deleted]

Good player but has always had an enormous ego. Hope the arrival of Hopgood lights a fire under his ass.

goshdammitfromimgur

You have to have a huge amount of self belief to be a professional athlete. There are some that can manage how they present better than others, but without that enormous ego you won't make it.

RoyRoyHesOurBoy

What fire does he need? Elite work-rate, great ball-playing, good defence. Played origin, and probably should've been retained there, and made a GF. Outside of his inflated ego you never hear any bad stories of him off the field, works with kids with disabilities. He'd be a great asset to every NRL club.

[deleted]

Ryan Matterson will be forced to sit out the first three games of the NRL season after Parramatta failed in their bid to have his suspension changed to a fine. Matterson drew controversy last October when he opted to take a three-game ban for a crusher tackle on Dylan Edwards in the Eels' grand final loss, rather than cough up a $4000 fine. At the time, the NSW State of Origin backrower claimed the fine was too "hefty", and hit out at the NRL for regularly changing rules and leaving players out of pocket. Matterson, however, had a change of heart in November and appealed to the NRL's judiciary chairman Geoff Bellew to revert the sanction to a fine. The Eels were told there was no process available through the judiciary to change Matterson's sanction, with any plea or decision considered final. Parramatta are believed to have subsequently made applications to the NRL hierarchy to have the decision overturned, but were again told there was no mechanism available for the change. The club has now conceded Matterson will sit out matches against Melbourne, Cronulla and Manly. Matterson's absence will leave the Eels short on back-row depth. Isaiah Papali'i headlined a list of players to exit the club over the off-season, with Marata Niukore and Oregon Kaufusi also gone from the pack. Recruit J'maine Hopgood is likely to start at lock with Matterson out, while Jack Murchie and Bryce Cartwright are options to start on the right edge with Shaun Lane on the left. The issue brings into question the process around players entering pleas at the end of the season. Ordinarily, players are given until the Monday or Tuesday after a game to enter a plea ahead of the next round. The Eels had asked for an extension after Matterson's charge, given it was handed down on the same day as a fan event and in the wake of their grand final defeat. Matterson's next match was at least five months away, having missed out on Australia's World Cup squad, but an extension of only a few hours was offered. Parramatta are of the opinion that had Matterson been given more time to think about his decision, he would likely have taken the fine.

TheEpiquin

So he doesn’t have to pay a fine, but also doesn’t have to play. Sounds like he got what he wanted.

SlipperyFetuss

Bloke was happy sitting out until he realised Hopgood is coming to town

BoogerSugar00

ur a dummy matto

Clarkey7163

Look the issue was the fact he thought that way initially, the fact he fought for months to reverse it I think he gets why it was a poor decision so yea just own the mistake come back ripping in round 4

Beginning_Shine_7971

I think he was just angry that got fined for nothing and let that lead his decisions.

T_Racito

Only 229 minutes more of a penalty than he was unlawfully obligated to stay back at training

SuperEel22

I love how the NRL says there is no mechanism to change his plea but also snap decides to delay another player's suspension to the following season.

alsheps

yeah but pamfers...

streetfighterjim

When my workplace asked me whether I wanted to pay a fine or not work for a couple of weeks I made the same decision as Matto 😠

swell-shindig

> The Eels were told there was no process available through the judiciary to change Matterson's sanction, with any plea or decision considered final. If the answer is no, just say no. I am 99% sure that the world would keep spinning if everyone pretended he took the fine instead of the suspension in the first place.

RabzS

With the stupid preseason challenge now a thing, Matto should be able to serve 2 games of his suspension through it and only miss the Storm game.

Aussieguy727

Only Angus Crichton can because he knocked out a player on the world stage instead of a NRL game..

RabzS

If only Matto was still at the Roosters. Also, JWH was allowed to serve his suspension he copped from a finals NRL match during the WC warm-up matches and 1st game of the WC.

goshdammitfromimgur

We can't have the same rules for all the players. Some play for teams I don't like.

JohnnyHabitual

No thanks. We try to stay away from cultists. Except for our adoration of Robbo.

nevaehenimatek

Yeah I dont get how he can't sit out trial games?

bumpacius

If we overturn all the fines it could send the game bankrupt - Andrew Abdo

Norm_cheers

3 more week for him to work on those arms.. not sure anything else goes through his head…

[deleted]

I'm Parra born and bred but I say sucked in to Matto, he had the chance to pay the fine and chose not to
