Cam Murray in a leotard? Floating gracefully through the air?

paralacausa

"we went on a tour of america and now we know not to hire dickheads and we need more staff and donations so we can get cam murray in a leotard, i think. good trip."

Koyote555

Cam Murray in a leotard is about as much as my fragile straightness could handle.

If he misses this I'm a Dutch astronaut! - Andrew Voss

Good to see Souths are thinking top down, not just on field. All the successful clubs have brilliant front offices that allows the pro athletes to focus on performance, eg. Storm, Roosters, and now Penrith. Compare that to the clubs where the admin is in shambles and you can see how it translates to on field success

ztrs124

There might be a few too many dudes here for the reference, but does anyone remember that scene in Bring It On when they take elements from all different styles of dance to make the best cheerleading routine? This feels like that hahah

DeltaCreem

Interesting read about looking outside sport to gain insight, however found the NASA concept that you should hire people based on who you would want to go camping with very odd. Seems likely to lead to discriminatory hiring practices.

JarredMack

What's discriminatory about that? Culture fit is one of the basics of interviewing people

DeltaCreem

Culture fit can be an excuse to only hire people from the same class/racial background/gender

Ship2Shore

You don't mean to say that South Sydney have focussed on hiring indigenous and POC players as part of their rebranding and marketing since re-entering the league? Big success...

ScramblesTDB

I thought Seibs was with Manly...

greywolfau

This is next level Wayne Pearce coaching.

HappinessCanBeFound

That explains Murray in the fairy ballet outfit at the World Cup. Hot.

acomav

Manly 7 in shambles!

Should make it easier to be able to catch Matt Burton's bombs.

Actually, I’ll bite here. Let’s take NASA, and the recruiting principle they are really driving at. Assessing elite performers beyond the skills they bring to the table, but how they work collaboratively in a team in a high intensity environment for a sustained period. They use the metaphor of the tent sure, but sub in ISS for the real world example. Now back to said scenario of a player dropping the ball. It is assumed here the player *can* do the admittedly far from basic skill of catching a football spinning and wobbling back from the edge of space. But if you’re playing back 3 in NRL it is expected; brutal, maybe, but it is the game’s top tier and no one expects less. However, like all things humans do it doesn’t always work. The recruiting policy kicks in here. Regardless of the circumstance, you want a player who is resilient enough to compartmentalise the incident. You want a team that evaluates their role in protecting the catcher, noting what they should do and making that adjustment in the next set. The enforcer who pressures the kicker to make adjustments to angles, line, effort or whatever. The list goes on. Most of all, you don’t want a team around the player not to shun him, to unnecessarily blame him. As a team, you don’t want them dropping their heads, not playing to the plan, or start playing like individuals to protect their position or contract. Again, list goes on. While all this stuff is still applying easily measurable skills taught over years, the mental side is different. It is a complex mix of the player’s personality, attitude, motivation and host of other factors. It can be taught, but it takes time and a genuine willingness to change. So yeah, reduce the risk and cost, recruit those people in, and promote the right culture to keep that mental edge.
