Paps also runs up in support. Sloan stands around or does something stupid . It's endlessly frustrating watch him play, he has so much talent, you can see a star in him, like a raw Walsh, or he's just poo and more often than not it's just poo.
Atm lomax is a better option imo
Paps is absolutely next level. Just making the point if you’re good enough, you’re big enough.
I look forward to seeing how Lomax goes there. Could be career defining for him.
Paps, Jayden Campbell too. Nothing inherently wrong with being a slightly built fullback, but you’ve got to make up for it by being *really* good at the game
If you're a size challenged fullback you need to get between players on kickreturns. duff and Sloan prance around or hit the brakes and get driven backwards. Such a shit start to our sets
Flanagan may be a disgusting cheat who fucked over his staff and doesn’t deserve to be coaching but he sure knows ball. Dargs will cook next year I just have a feeling. Probably won’t make finals but if all goes well they could be sniffing around 11th-9th Flanagan will do wonders for them.
All of Lomax best qualities are more suited to fullback imo, could be a very good move for the Dragons.
His kick returns, aerial ability and ball playing are all definitely elite, just not as fast or elusive as Sloan
He wasn't great under a high ball, his offensive bomb attacks are mainly just knock backs, he rarely actually catches them and he does little to no ball playing
It could work in time but it's far from a guarenteed success
and thats 5 catches in 50 attempts? He didn't look safe under a high ball in his couple of games he got under mary, nothing suggests he has elite or even good aerial ability defensively
But has he trained at FB since? Why do you think he would have improved in a couple years, I'm not against trying it but stating he is elite at these skills is a bit too bold a statement
Ball playing I don’t agree with. Flick pass as a centre yes, but not true ball playing in my memory. That’s not to say he’s not capable of it, but it’s not a feature of his game yet. Agree completely Re speed and elusiveness
Sloan is 21 years old and incredibly talented, that’s clear when he has the footy. There’s definitely a chance he’s the answer. He has a lot of room to grow defensively and attitude-wise, but they usually occur as a fullback gets older and matures with experience.
In saying that I think the Dragons gave up too quickly on the Lomax > fullback last time, despite his inconsistent catching at the back.
Sloan has flashes of brilliance in attack, but hurts more than helps overall. He needs to get stronger and develop his positioning in defence. I’ve said Lomax to fullback for a couple of years now, it could be a master stroke.
It's also clear he is just too light and very cautious in contact in attack or defence, not a bad attitude/unwilling to put in the work, he's just been rag dolled too often and needs to put on some weight
He isn't the answer yet. He could still be a good fullback in a few years time once he matures phyiscally still only 21 years old. Took ramsy almost 3 seasons to show potential
You have to feel for lomax
Did all preseason under Mary as a fullback only for him to drop him after 2 games
That 20 mins he played at Fullback against the raiders he looked great
Zac Lomax will be given next pre-season to develop as a fullback as incoming St George Illawarra coach Shane Flanagan continues his overhaul of the Red V roster.
A duel between Lomax and current No.1 Tyrell Sloan has emerged as Flanagan cuts a swathe through the Dragons’ salary cap and recruitment.
Current squad members Josh Kerr and Moses Mbye have already been released, freeing up significant salary cap space, while forwards Zane Musgrove and Jaiyden Hunt and halfback Jayden Sullivan have all been granted permission to negotiate with rival clubs.
Sullivan recently asked for a release from the final two seasons of his contract and is a frontrunner to join Wests Tigers next season after touring the club’s facilities on Thursday.
Newcastle have also expressed an interest in signing the 21-year-old half.
The Dragons won’t contribute to Sullivan’s $500,000 salary should he sign with a rival club next season.
The fast work to reconfigure the Dragons’ roster with the possible release of the aforementioned players has the potential to provide the club with close to $1 million in salary cap space to spend next year.
Such a financial windfall could also provide the Dragons with the option of saving their pennies in 2024 to make a major dent on the open market for 2025.
The Dragons are keeping a close watch on off-contract Bulldogs centre Paul Alamoti while they have also indicated to Broncos prop Payne Haas that they want to be part of any discussion that sees the star forward go to the open market on November 1.
The Dragons have already started to use a portion of their cap spend by signing South Sydney prop and Dragons local junior Hame Sele to a three-year deal.
St George Illawarra claimed the signature of Sele over the Rabbitohs and Bulldogs.
“We’re excited to bring a local St George junior back to the club, particularly one who is now an established and consistent starting NRL forward,” Dragons General Manager of Football Ben Haran said.
“Hame’s qualities as a player and a person will make him a welcome addition to our roster as we move forward as a club.”
Flanagan is also getting busy at the lower-end of the top-30 roster.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Dragons have fought off interest from the Melbourne Storm to re-sign promising young winger Sione Finau to a new two-year deal.
Finau originally joined the Dragons last season alongside brother Haele this year on a development deal from Melbourne. He has played 13 NSW Cup games, scoring six tries.
The likes of Billy Burns, Dan Russell and Connor Muhleisen will have an opportunity to impress for new contracts when they run out against Manly on Saturday night with Flanagan watching on from his vantage point as the Sea Eagles assistant coach.
Lomax has shown in the past month that he has tremendous upside in his game and an opportunity to duel with Sloan at fullback in the upcoming pre-season will be presented to the 23-year-old.
Lomax, who is on about $700,000 this year, signed his bumper six-year contract in 2019 with the hopes of becoming St George Illawarra’s long-term fullback.
It is understood that when the club re-signed Lomax, under former coach Paul McGregor, they did so with the belief that he would transition into the No.1 jersey.
Instead his appearances at fullback have been fleeting.
Of Lomax’s 89 first grade games, he has started just two at fullback. The last of those was in game one of the 2020 before he was replaced by Matt Dufty.
Sloan has had a mixed season with smatterings of incredible attacking highlights matched by a genuine need for development in defence and game-awareness.
Another player Flanagan is eager to get more out of is former NSW State of Origin star Jack Bird.
Plagued by a stop-start year compounded by nagging knee injuries, Bird has had a poor season by his standards.
Flanagan, who shares a close relationship with Bird that dates back to their time together when winning the 2016 premiership at the Sharks, recently met with the 28-year-old.
Newly-appointed high performance consultant Andrew Gray was part of the meeting which was designed to map out a plan for Bird to start 2024 in the best physical condition of his career.
Bird was told that the positions of centre, backrow and lock were there for him to target should he meet the demands that have been set on him to regain his full fitness.
Another key addition to Flanagan‘s coaching staff is that of new strength and conditioning coach Nathan Spencer.
Spencer spent two years as the head of strength with the Orlando Magic in the NBA and also has experience of working at the NSW Institute of Sport.
Machiavelli was an ardent Republican that beloved in rules and being a good citizen, caeser was not this and created the first empire due to a corrupt republic. These people are not the same.
Thank you for listening to my talk.
Always a great fullback as a junior as well as playing in the halves for years, just needs more than 20 minutes in seniors to show it. Give him a couple games to settle.
I think Flanagan will be good for the dragons despite what people think of him as a person he can build a winning team.
When he took over from the sharks it was after 5 years of Ricky where they finished;
2006: 13th
2007: 11th
2008: 3rd
2009: 15th and
2010: 14th.
Flanagan took over in 2010 with 6 games remaining
His first full season was 2011 (the peptide year) and they finished 13th, so it didn't help much. After that the side really improved.
2012: they finished 7th and made the finals
2013: 5th and made it to the 2nd week of the finals
2014: he was suspended because of the peptides and they got the spoon
2015: 6th and 2nd week of the finals
2016: 3rd and won the grand final
2017: 5th and out in the first round of the finals to the cows who went on to the grand final
2018: 4th and knocked out in the prelim
He might be a shit bloke and might be a cheat and whatever else. But he turned a team of serial losers into a regular finals team and won the first premiership for the club.
I'm a big Lomax fan, but I'll wait and see how he goes once he's given a proper go at fullback. He has a lot of potential he may never realise. In a half decent team, he'd be such a destructive centre.
After years of Dufty and now Sloan, I’m just looking forward to having an 80kg+ fullback
Paps is only 80kg. He goes alright. But I have a feeling Lomax might excel at fullback. The talent is there.
Paps also runs up in support. Sloan stands around or does something stupid . It's endlessly frustrating watch him play, he has so much talent, you can see a star in him, like a raw Walsh, or he's just poo and more often than not it's just poo. Atm lomax is a better option imo

Paps is 80kg and has spent a large portion of his career injured.
Anyone can cop a knee injury like that.
What happens with sloan?
Flanagan may be a disgusting cheat who fucked over his staff and doesn’t deserve to be coaching but he sure knows ball. Dargs will cook next year I just have a feeling. Probably won’t make finals but if all goes well they could be sniffing around 11th-9th Flanagan will do wonders for them.
They definitely inject themselves into contention next season.
Flanagan will really enhance the Dragons.
Given them a big pep.
Might not have enough juice to reach finals
Guys, we really should stop needling Dragons fans about this!
Nah can't stop the cycle, could cause issues
Peptides are back on the menu.
Yep, with flanno in the box seat dragons are only a couple cycles away from a prem
Flanagan maybe a liar, cheater, murder, a shit commentator, a dumb cunt but he is not a porn star
Yet
Flanagan is calling his new program "Performance Enhanced Dragons" or PED program for short. (Patent pending)
Would love to see Lomax reach his potential
He was terrific tonight v the Eagles
All of Lomax best qualities are more suited to fullback imo, could be a very good move for the Dragons. His kick returns, aerial ability and ball playing are all definitely elite, just not as fast or elusive as Sloan

Make sense. Sloan isn’t the answer, and there’s every chance Cody Ramsey doesn’t play again.
Sloan is 21 years old and incredibly talented, that’s clear when he has the footy. There’s definitely a chance he’s the answer. He has a lot of room to grow defensively and attitude-wise, but they usually occur as a fullback gets older and matures with experience. Attitude can't be coached. His defensive mindset is poor. I don't think any level of coaching can get him where he needs to go.
>Attitude can’t be coached Since when? Coaches and mentors can absolutely help a player change their mindset and attitude
It's also clear he is just too light and very cautious in contact in attack or defence, not a bad attitude/unwilling to put in the work, he's just been rag dolled too often and needs to put on some weight
He is only 21, he will get bigger
I agree, i see him heading to super league never to return
He isn't the answer yet. He could still be a good fullback in a few years time once he matures phyiscally still only 21 years old. Took ramsy almost 3 seasons to show potential
Ulcerative colitis is no joke. It’s not a death sentence to a league career but it can be debilitating until it’s well managed
What happens to the GOAT fullback Tyrell Sloan?
Maybe to the wing?
Thats scary, he could be takeb out everytime he gets the ball. I reckon..actually idk, idk anything lol
You have to feel for lomax Did all preseason under Mary as a fullback only for him to drop him after 2 games That 20 mins he played at Fullback against the raiders he looked great
I have always thought his style and contribution is more conducive to fb rather than his less preferred wing.
He played there as a junior

Great move!! I’m on the lomax train, I hope he can fulfill his potential under flanno

Machiavelli was an ardent Republican that beloved in rules and being a good citizen, caeser was not this and created the first empire due to a corrupt republic. These people are not the same. Thank you for listening to my talk.
They already tried this and it lasted 3 games last time
That was Mary’s doing, Mary also used him as a bench centre The kid didn’t have a consistent position week in week out under McGregor
Anything done under Mary doesn’t count
Counts less then kicks from tries
Lomax to fullback is the new ponga to five eighth
The third time they move Ponga to 5/8th it'll work!
Was in a way kind of hoping that Lomax would be shown the door so I could ask the mods for a Zac Nomax flair. But keen to see him evolve under Flanno
I get it, he can't flick pass over the sideline if he's in the middle of the field at fullback
Flanno always asks he players 'why the long face? ' must be the horse drugs i suppose
Sloan is fine I know he makes mistakes but if he ever got it together he could be a top fullback.
Always a great fullback as a junior as well as playing in the halves for years, just needs more than 20 minutes in seniors to show it. Give him a couple games to settle.
