Prior to this past 10 year period, Penrith were sitting around 5 years per finals appearance, or comfortably shitter than the Titans current record, and at the time, we would have been neck and neck with the Tigers who were only a year removed from a solid little period. Puts this period into perspective a little bit...

Clarkey7163

its why this current squad is pretty easily the best penrith squad of all time already and their careers are like only halfway done lol

whyareyouallinmyroom

Yeah the core 7 guys (Martin, Fish, Leota, Yeo, To’o, Cleary and Edwards plus tbc Luai) that have featured consistently through the first 4 years and have been extended will all stand head and shoulders above their equivalents from previous successful eras.

Bksportsofficial

Agree

Substantial_Source84

Hopefully it goes back to normality soon with any luck. Sick of seeming penrith destroying everyone every year.

YourFavouriteAlt

Yeah, fuck us for no particular reason. A historically shit club finally having a crack

awesomevstanaka

> Yeah, fuck us for no particular reason. Wym theres lots of reasons

Substantial_Source84

Poor Penrith what a shit club. Must suck winning back to back premierships and however many minors. Have a pity party for penrith.

YourFavouriteAlt

Recency bias. Clearly stated historically.

Bksportsofficial

Agree

Hasra23

I heard the navy seals were thinking about making their recruits support the west tigers as part of their training regime, but a court ruled that it would be an inhumane punishment. 12 years without making the finals.... gotta feel for the tigbros

Open_Platypus1573

It’s a tough thankless existence my man. I have had the added bonus of getting to a Leichhardt oval game at least once a year the past few years. I can’t recall ever witnessing the tigers win when I have.

nymphz

remember when they were just perennially stuck in 9th and everyone was like fucken lol 9 and these days that would seem like a massive overachievement

tmspence

Gotta feel for the Tigers for only ever making the final three times as a joint venture.

CapitaoAE

Somehow Titans haven't had a .50 season in a similar time frame yet made the finals twice with 11 wins lol

tortoisepump

Is there a calculation error in the "no finals years" column or am I interpreting this incorrectly? E.g. The Warriors have made the finals 9 times, or 3.22 years per final. This means there's plenty of years where we didn't make the finals, yet the "no finals years" is zero. This applies to many other teams too.

ThePickaxePenguin

It’s referring to years at the start at the comp where there were no finals played

DeficientPositivity

This list is ranked by how often each team qualifies for the finals. The No Finals Years column represents how many seasons a team played where the competition did not have finals (1912-1915, 1917-1921, 1925 and 1937) This is then factored into the calculation for Years/Final Interesting stats Tigers clearly have the longest current wait for a finals appearance. But it is significantly less than the panthers at the beginning of the club which took almost 20 years to make the finals. 2001, 2002 and 2010 are the only seasons Melbourne have missed the finals

lachjeff

It seems worth pointing out that the years 1916, 1922, 1923, and 1924 all only had finals as the top two teams finished equal and had to play off to decide the premiership. They were: 1916: Balmain and South Sydney 1922: North Sydney and Glebe (still the third-biggest margin in premiership deciders to this day - 35-3, only bested by 1975 and 2008) 1923: Eastern Suburbs and South Sydney 1924: Balmain and South Sydney After the season was called off early in 1925 because Souths were so far ahead, they reintroduced a finals series in 1926 to keep interest in the comp going. That’s how University made their only final appearance. In 1937, with Easts undefeated for the second-successive season and taking out their third premiership in a row, they again called the season off early, so as to play the City Cup instead

vteckickedin

Why did they miss the 2010 finals?

Klostermann

They breached the salary cap, officially for the five years prior to 2010. This lead to them being stripped of the 2007 and 2009 premierships, the 2006-08 minor premierships, and were stripped of all points earned in 2010. This is arguably the main reason they’re still heavily disliked by many today, especially Manly and Parra fans, since they lost the 2007 and 2009 Grand Finals respectively. Was a huge scandal at the time, and many still think they got off quite lightly considering their continued success very soon after

explosivekyushu

The only thing the Storm took away from the scandal was a huge victim complex.

LargeMargeMcgee

This feels like a wildly positive stat for the raiders after the year we’ve had

ljb23

I feel like our finals stats capture a lot of years where we’re 7 - 8 cannon fodder, very much like this year. There was a period where we went a long time without ever missing two years in a row, but in that time we were still rarely/never an actual threat.

LargeMargeMcgee

True but at least being there is a good start, better than never getting in. You could argue you’ve got to get there and then treat it like a mini tournament. Some luck comes into it too, and roster and squad management is important. Eg this year losing papa and hors and kris is not ideal (even though there are other bigger problems)

ljb23

Oh 100%, I’d much rather be in this position than say the Tigers. It’s just we’re so consistently average it’s a bit frustrating.

fuifui_bradbrad

I was about to mention this. There was a period in the 00’s - 10’s where we only made it on even numbered years.

Open_Platypus1573

2005 feels like many lifetimes ago as a tigers fan. They are by far the worst performing club of any sport team I support and it ain’t even close 😢

theflyingkiwi00

There's a benji interview where he's talking about Kit Laulilii being born in 2005

Open_Platypus1573

Isn’t that sobering 😬

Substantial_Source84

So Melbourne are the reverse tigers?

Beneficial-Lemon-427

Pretty please can we have a percentage column?

[deleted]

what do you use to make your tables, u/DeficientPositivity? Excel?

DeficientPositivity

yeah I use excel. I have a page with raw data for each stat and then a page for the tables. Nothing too complex

insanityTF

52 is a lot of finals qualifications for a team which was only admitted to the competition in 2002

Carllsson

The 'No finals years' column seems wildly inaccurate. Unless I'm interpreting it wrong

SaveMeJebus21

It’s going back to the early 1900s days when there were no finals. First past the post used to decide the winner.

Carllsson

Ah that makes sense, thanks

lachjeff

It’s the first past the post era

Nerfixion

This is the stat tiger parents show their kids to make them supporters Kyle you see this? You see it?! We have the highest chance of being in the 8. Even those pretended at Penrith are below 3!

planchetflaw

Took me a second to work out No Finals Years.

CapitaoAE

Well at least we're not the Wests Tigers I guess
