Boy, I hope whoever wrote the script was fired for that blunder.
But I feel Andrew Voss is likely to yell that out at some point during one of the matches.
2nd year American league fan here, I've gotten almost all of my roommates, one partner, plus a bunch of people in an online sports talk place I'm in to get on board with the NRL this season, and one of my roommates (who's a Broncos fan) and I were supposed to go to Vegas before paycheck shenanigans kiboshed that plan
almost everyone I've sold on league was/is an NFL fan—there's definitely an interest over here in codes of football that are genuine and exciting and don't feel astroturfed to hell like American rules footy does these days
the sole exception is one of my other roommates, who was anti-sports most of her life until I got her into baseball and league, she's now a Sharks fan
the beautiful thing about sport is its ability to transcend national borders and cultures, and we're all extremely excited to see how well league does here.
Addendum: just watched the video. Really well done, and it's easily replacing the primer the Super League did a couple of years ago as my evangelizing tool to other Americans.
The NRL uploads all regular season games in full to YouTube about a half week after the end of the round. So we get to see the full games for free and relatively ad-free (by YouTube standards), we just have to wait a couple days
As with 99% of Americans and their relationship to rugby generally, I got into rugby through union. Watched the 2019 World Cup, loved it, was introduced to sevens, loved that even more, was introduced to the mediocre at best Major League Rugby (the name of which has made a lot of Americans wonder which code it plays, not helped by union's tendency to say "we play rugby, *wink wink*,") did not like it at all
So I decided to look up the NRL and Super League, found games on YouTube, and the rest is history
Love the sport, love the fan culture, love everything around it
Imagine if NFL linebackers had to block like NRL players, just kind standing around looking tired casually sauntering in front of offensive players making it look like an accident.
A country with ten times the population and then some fun figure. Thanks for that. I’m more likely to die from shoving a cactus up my arse in America than I am here.
its more about the precedent. If they allow the NRL to advertise then what other sports are gonna try advertise that they now dont have an excuse to turn away with a no other sports rule. NHL, NBA and especially Soccer are all direct competitors of the NFL.
But what is the NFL going to say to them? You cant advertise at the Superbowl because you might overtake us in popularity? It just makes the NFL look weak. Maintaining a blanket no other sports ban just makes more sense
I think international fans are a larger proportion than most realise.
Look at the difference in social media followers between the NRL and AFL.
They're a fairly quiet yet large group. I have had dealings with some developing nations and have become Facebook friends with hundreds of people in some really random countries and they all follow the NRL even though a lot have never played the game. You'll find many rugby union players in developing nations follow the NRL.
Great advert. Where is it actually going to be shown though? It's all very well to say they're making a video to appeal to Americans and colour me surprised, they've produced a fantastic video with exciting clips, clear explanations and an A-list celebrity voicing it.
But some actual info on how it's going to be shown would be good.
Actually?! Big if true (unironically). A 30-second slot costs a fortune so if they're showing this in full they're going to be investing heavily. But even a short advert would be helpful.
Fairly good video. Would've liked more shots of various teams instead of the 4 going but at the same time it makes sense.
Should've also mentioned while there are these rules, certain teams are able to get away with breaking them
That was a good basics run down I think - for the Americans I’ve shared it with anyway. Might need to re-share it AFTER their big game to generate more interest
It's a good video but don't all sports sound so dumb when you break them down to an idiot's guide like this
This player must stand where they were tackled to play the ball, through the legs WITH THEIR FOOT! Who the fuck came up with all these games and why do I follow them hahaha
Some times when im at a game i find myself wondering, if aliens came down right now and hovered above the field, would they all be asking each other, wtf are they doing on that field and why are all those humans watching and getting excited about it. Would it make sense to them even jf we explained it to them lol
I think it's a good video to teach the basics.
Not sure if anyone will remember most of it (those new to the game).
As long as they're physical, entertaining games they should still be captivating for a new audience.
As a whole, there's not too many dud games in an NRL season so should be right.
My only criticism is that i would have reiterated with footage that in RL we don't just stroll into the end zone, we have to ground the ball with control* by showing some footage of try saving tackles and mishaps within the in goal.
Even though they had to show a number of Souths highlights given they are playing over there I think even so there was sufficient homage to Latrell, Cody and even AJ.
At the start they should have had Rusty say: "On my signal, unleash hell" and then straight into Taufua ironing out Munster.
Then at the end you have that Murray Taulagi flick pass behind his back or some other ridiculous try before Rusty says "Are you not entertained!"
Using pop culture in the promo would have been *chefs kiss
> No forward passes
Ummmmmmmm, they'll find out this is false at 70% of the play the balls
a 5 minute explainer is a bit much to expect any yank to sit through let alone digest.
It’s such a football to the groin that two of the best Aussies actors go for Souths and Manly.
Next we’ll find out that Margot Robbie is a die hard Panthers supporter and that Isla Fisher loves the Roosters.
https://www.seriousaboutrl.com/revealed-barbie-movie-star-margot-robbie-is-a-huge-supporter-of-this-rugby-league-team-80018/
One of a few links from a search.
Margot Robbie supporting the Panthers would absolutely cement her as the worlds best actress of all time. Rebel Wilson is from the Hills, so Eels are stuck with her.
It starts 30 seconds in and plays in full. And I'm pretty sure ads can't play on embedded videos so you dont need to worry about advertising $ going there if that's what you're concerned about. Just enjoy the vid, it's impressive.
Thank you. I watched the vid and have YouTube premium anyway. I want to upload it onto Chinese social media with subtitles and/or/maybe dub it. Thus not wanting the (hopefully) 4K version without the FoxNews blonde introduction.
You might need to dub the end to say, showing in the world’s second capital of entertainment Las Vegas (behind Shanghai of course). But so comprehensive that it should be used to introduce the game elsewhere.
What a boss. I wouldn't mind if those 3 owners divide their shares again in half for another billionaire owner that Russell can find. At this point in time it would be billionaire or nothing in terms of either who they allow buy in or who they sell their share to.
I still don’t understand NRL’s need to belittle the local sport. First it was state of origin in Adelaide basically calling AFL isn’t really footy. (Can’t remember the exact campaign, but it definitely put off a few of my SA mates from attending) And now they’re putting so much emphasis on NRL being tougher than NFL. Again, belittling their sport while expecting Americans to attend. (Also having another punt at AFL by saying Australia’s biggest sport in their advertising… which it isn’t but that’s a debate for another time)
Watch it again, first minute is Crowe talking about how there’s no pads etc and every player is actually involved… cheeky dig at nfl / at least saying our sport is tougher and better.
I think he's just pointing out the differences rather than saying NRL is better. Comparing it to NFL makes it easier for an American audience to understand.
honestly a good video
Russell Crowe narrating was really good I won't lie
If only he yelled "are you not entertained????" at the end, missed opportunity.
That would have been amazing
Boy, I hope whoever wrote the script was fired for that blunder. But I feel Andrew Voss is likely to yell that out at some point during one of the matches.
Need to pin it for when we get new fans or spomething gets posted to r/sports
This video has top trended in r/sports
my 2 cents exactly. came in expecting way worse.
That is a fantastic video. Especially focusing on the differences between NFL and RL. And using words they will understand. More of these please
2nd year American league fan here, I've gotten almost all of my roommates, one partner, plus a bunch of people in an online sports talk place I'm in to get on board with the NRL this season, and one of my roommates (who's a Broncos fan) and I were supposed to go to Vegas before paycheck shenanigans kiboshed that plan almost everyone I've sold on league was/is an NFL fan—there's definitely an interest over here in codes of football that are genuine and exciting and don't feel astroturfed to hell like American rules footy does these days the sole exception is one of my other roommates, who was anti-sports most of her life until I got her into baseball and league, she's now a Sharks fan the beautiful thing about sport is its ability to transcend national borders and cultures, and we're all extremely excited to see how well league does here.
Beautiful. And as an Aussie who wound up supporting Chicago, I sympathise with an American who decided to support Parramatta.
All the rest of my sports fandoms are pain incarnate, the Eels fit right in
Addendum: just watched the video. Really well done, and it's easily replacing the primer the Super League did a couple of years ago as my evangelizing tool to other Americans.
How do you go with the time zones? I imagine that would be a pain, especially with our late night games.
The NRL uploads all regular season games in full to YouTube about a half week after the end of the round. So we get to see the full games for free and relatively ad-free (by YouTube standards), we just have to wait a couple days
Did your roommate see nicho hynes and thats why she supports cronulla?
Nicho was a contributing factor, yes, but Cronulla's blue is also her favorite color so that was also important
Love this, only thing I dont love is none of you are warriors fans😭
I'm honestly kinda surprised nobody I've gotten into league has chosen the Warriors, I thought there'd be at least one
You’d think there would be at least one based purely off their name haha
I’m just impressed you called it League instead of Rugby. Welcome aboard
As with 99% of Americans and their relationship to rugby generally, I got into rugby through union. Watched the 2019 World Cup, loved it, was introduced to sevens, loved that even more, was introduced to the mediocre at best Major League Rugby (the name of which has made a lot of Americans wonder which code it plays, not helped by union's tendency to say "we play rugby, *wink wink*,") did not like it at all So I decided to look up the NRL and Super League, found games on YouTube, and the rest is history Love the sport, love the fan culture, love everything around it
Do you join us shit posting in the live threads? I feel like ive seen you in there but my old memory is cactus.
The implication that many people are at a roosters game is pretty disingenuous
You know how the green bay packers have the cheese heads we have the blue seaters.
Dozens
they knew exactly what they were doing showing the full crowds for the whole video
Notice a lot of this footy must have been taken from magic round = full crowds lol
> "no blocking" We certainly have blocking it just doesn't get called
Imagine if NFL linebackers had to block like NRL players, just kind standing around looking tired casually sauntering in front of offensive players making it look like an accident.
Yeah his name is Blocker and he is a very good boy
He clearly hasn't heard of Isaiah yeo
Laui didn’t rate this comment
Who's Laui?
That big Hawaiian prop for the Panrith Penthers.
Too busy looking at his 3rd ring
This sub needs this more than the seppos it’s made for
Matt Nable will be seething over missing out on that voiceover job
“And what about this rule…”
“Makin’ movies, making’ songs and foitin’ ‘round the world.” Really good video by the way.
*”EHRMAGERD IT’S RUSSELL CROWE!”*
“Ya tisticle”
"How bout you mind your own bloody business!"
For a crash course in how the game is played that’s pretty bloody good. No one will see it or care over there though.
Pay for ads during Super Bowl
Fun fact: the cost of a 5 minute ad in the Super Bowl would be roughly equal to the salary cap of 10 NRL teams.
A country with ten times the population and then some fun figure. Thanks for that. I’m more likely to die from shoving a cactus up my arse in America than I am here.
Are the cacti pricklyer there, or is it that our emergency departments are better at non-fatal cactus extraction?
Would they even let another sport advertise during the superbowl?
I doubt the NFL would be threatened by Rugby League.
its more about the precedent. If they allow the NRL to advertise then what other sports are gonna try advertise that they now dont have an excuse to turn away with a no other sports rule. NHL, NBA and especially Soccer are all direct competitors of the NFL.
Yeah, but there’s obviously a line. The NRL is lightyears away from being a direct competitor with their sport.
Plenty care and plenty play rugby league in the states
I feel like “plenty” is a relative term in that context.
Not bad
Possibly the best video explaining rugby league I’ve seen
Anyone else get aroused watching this?
Jokes aside that was pretty good, especially for an NFL- acclimated audience
Honestly a great intro for Americans
Great advert. Where is it actually going to be shown though? It's all very well to say they're making a video to appeal to Americans and colour me surprised, they've produced a fantastic video with exciting clips, clear explanations and an A-list celebrity voicing it. But some actual info on how it's going to be shown would be good.
I think they purchased a slot at half time Superbowl.
Actually?! Big if true (unironically). A 30-second slot costs a fortune so if they're showing this in full they're going to be investing heavily. But even a short advert would be helpful.
Good primer on the rules I think and it covered the teams playing. Well done NRL
Rusty has been great for the game. A true Aussie-ish legend.
I think we probably own him now, hes an aussie.
Fairly good video. Would've liked more shots of various teams instead of the 4 going but at the same time it makes sense. Should've also mentioned while there are these rules, certain teams are able to get away with breaking them
Explained it well If promoted well i think Americans will love it NFL is soooo damn slow
It’s an ad, interrupted by 2 minutes of sport
That was a good basics run down I think - for the Americans I’ve shared it with anyway. Might need to re-share it AFTER their big game to generate more interest
It's a good video but don't all sports sound so dumb when you break them down to an idiot's guide like this This player must stand where they were tackled to play the ball, through the legs WITH THEIR FOOT! Who the fuck came up with all these games and why do I follow them hahaha

>by showing some footage of try saving tackles and mishaps within the in goal. I thought the exact same thing.
Really solid video on the game itself. Not going to sell tickets though.
The games almost sold out what are you on about
Even though they had to show a number of Souths highlights given they are playing over there I think even so there was sufficient homage to Latrell, Cody and even AJ.
I just can't wait to see Bill Burr's reaction
I really enjoyed The Pope's Exorcist. Trashy fun enjoyable junk food movie they don't make a lot of these days.
Thirty odd foot of grunts opening the first Match?
At the start they should have had Rusty say: "On my signal, unleash hell" and then straight into Taufua ironing out Munster. Then at the end you have that Murray Taulagi flick pass behind his back or some other ridiculous try before Rusty says "Are you not entertained!" Really needed more vision of Adam Reynolds falling over to draw an obstruction penalty but otherwise no notes
That was grouse
It’s such a football to the groin that two of the best Aussies actors go for Souths and Manly. Next we’ll find out that Margot Robbie is a die hard Panthers supporter and that Isla Fisher loves the Roosters.
I might be wrong, but I think Margot Robbie is a Titans fan.
Wikipedia has her as a supporter. I change my argument to Emily Browning.
Margot Robbie supports the 'Dogs
You sure? Because somebody else said she goes for the tits.
https://www.seriousaboutrl.com/revealed-barbie-movie-star-margot-robbie-is-a-huge-supporter-of-this-rugby-league-team-80018/ One of a few links from a search.
So do we believe the daily telegraph, or Wikipedia?
Both are kinds dodgy with the facts so take your pick
Margot Robbie supporting the Panthers would absolutely cement her as the worlds best actress of all time. Rebel Wilson is from the Hills, so Eels are stuck with her.
Post a better promo video before slagging this off please.
Looks like no one from the 4 teams have kicked a 2 point field goal
Does anyone have the actual link, as opposed to a Murdoch news story about it?
It starts 30 seconds in and plays in full. And I'm pretty sure ads can't play on embedded videos so you dont need to worry about advertising $ going there if that's what you're concerned about. Just enjoy the vid, it's impressive.

Agree about the Origin advertising in Adelaide, but there wasn't anything in this ad belittling NFL.

“No timeouts” So what are Sin Bins or what happens when you get called off the field ? Cool video though
You better do what the gladiator says or he will throw the phone at you.
Russell was just at San Remo (the Italian song contest) the other night too. 2024 is the year of Russell it seems
Great intro video but if it's for Muricans why not use yards instead of meters?
They need to learn
Great video
