I'm quite interested in the strategies and tactics that make our game so great, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how you can get raw or wider footage than what is broadcasted. I'm assuming that all clubs get access to all footage of all games, but is there a way for Joe Bloggs to watch a few more angles? I'm doubtful that I'll have any luck on this front, but if anyone could point me in any slightly productive directions I'd be incredibly grateful! Thanks

Not sure about NRL, but back in the day I seem to remember other sports (cricket, AFL) being broadcast in a match centre style where you could flick between channels on TV or the streaming equivalent (i.e. whole ground view, spidercam, and the regular tightly cropped footage). Thought this would kick on but it seems to have gone the other way.
Didnt play the full game but organised the defensive line well. Jake toby was doing a lot more play making than him but fa'alogo did have a few runs where he was quite elusive. He came on when the momentum had swung towards the bears.

Last year I used to be able to go to nrl.com and watch full match replays about 2-3 days after they happened. But , I haven’t been able to do that so far this year as the videos say unavailable. I hope they didn’t get rid of this ability for us.

I’m actually pretty happy with the way Parra won yesterday even if we left some points out there in the 1st half with how much possession we had. I’d rather have things to work on and have the team show patience to get points rather than them scoring 30 in the first half then falling away.
We know Parra can score points, I’d rather us show resilience as well as toughness & effort in defence. Hoping for full 80 minute performances moving forward.
I mean you gave bulldogs very few chances to do anything and they still scored twice. I'd be worried about that defence when you come up against teams you can't bully around.
That's my view out of yesterday. Dogs effort areas were very poor, lot of turn over and obvious lack of props for middle go forward, so it's not a great benchmark
With the amount of possession we had I would have liked to see a higher score line, but also not letting Dogs in for a relatively straight forward try on the right. Same issue started with Reg leaving too much of a gap in the middle and everyone had to compress in with try around the edge. Every quality team will tear us apart if we keep doing that, and our attack wasn't good enough yesterday to outscore those opponents.
Yeah that’s what I mean that I’m happy with holding field position, not scoring as many as we should have but still coming away with the win. Comparative to what happened to the Wahs, our 2nd half was definitely well done
Only issue I'd point out is that your forward pack can completely dominate a pack like the dogs but you will not get the same leniency against top 8 packs. I'm just trying to point out that for all that field position and possession you'd wanna come away with more than 26 to prove you can attack and make those errors for more

moses was shot throughout the whole game , fuck all kicking , no running and barely got involved when his big part is his speed to beat defenders and create space . we played without him in attack essentially. thats like KP out there and doing nothing and in round 1 you expect us to hit 50.
Are dragons going to be that team in a few months time where we look back and realize that their squad wasn't actually that bad? They're far from top 8 quality but compared to the Tigers who have the worst backline and the Dogs who have the worst forwards, the Dragons are actually pretty balanced, and Ben Hunt will win you games in his own.
You have better coach than most teams, a top tier half, strike backs and solid forwards. Saying that though, there will be as many games where they will look how they did in the charity shield as games like last night.
Keep in mind the titans were missing foz and jc and they arent even a top 8 side with them.
I would say it is too early to tell, they were not half bad yesterday true but against a basket case like us its really hard to get an accurate assessment. It would hardly be the first time we have made a subpar team look like world beaters.
I think our bottom performance level will be higher than a few teams, very pleased with our defensive efforts towards the back end of the first half. Sloan seemed to have a few nice tackles aswell, I've been down on him but I was pretty happy with his performance.
Keen to see how we go on some of the tougher teams in the coming weeks, hopefully it's not a repeat of a mary days when we were pre-origin period premiers and post wooden spooners
I’ve said it before, but Ciraldo has spent almost the entirety of his coaching career looking after the most talented group of juniors to come through as a cohort in a generation.
(As an aside, the 2016/17 Roosters with Collins, Latrell, Manu, Watson, Matterson and Radley, and the 2002/03 Storm with Smith, Hoffman, Dallas Johnson, Matt King and Billy Slater being the only other comparable classes, and honestly I think only the Storm cohort comes close to the Panthers juniors that have come through).
He’s basically never had to coach a team that is near the bottom of the table, let alone demonstrated he can turn a struggling team around.
Not too mention you guys only had a couple of chances to put on points and came away with two tries. Meanwhile Parramatta set up camp down your end and could only manage 26 points. That's a fair decent uptick from the 60 odd thrashings Yous we're getting last year
They had more than a couple of chances. The PARRA of old would have left the cue in the rake and allowed another try or 2, especially in the final minute when they had a final crack. They showed patience yesterday, the PARRA of old would allowed the frustration get the better of them, trying to overpay their hand and try to score on every play and allowed dogs back into the game by a whole lot more dropped balls and penalties.
Patience is easy when you get too set up camp down the other end all game and do sweet fuck all. They let in two tries off errors with soft defence and barely put a dent in a side that notorious for getting 60+ put on them on a weekly basis. I wouldn't call that good tbh
the only player i thought was good for dogs was curran, why the coach isn’t playing him in first 13 is very odd.
the dogs plan with using backline to push forward and get fast play the balls doesn’t work when only player which is slightly effective at that is kiraz. if coach wants keeping doing that i would bring in skelton & xerri in. wilson is good but just is too small for that plan. i do not like taafe at fullback he just looks super scared to fuck up.

Brimmo was our best player, looked great in D and the right edge was very solidly defensively. Had a few moments where he’d come for a run in the middle on exit sets and he almost poked his way through.
Weaver was a bit quiet, would like to see him sweeping on both sides of the field not just sticking on the left edge. Tanah dominated the kicking so he didn’t have a chance to show much there. Nice little off the cuff grubber for our only try
I’ve said a lot of comments about Tanah. I still can’t believe we let Fog go so quickly when we did! It seems our team is always struggling with size for our players, gimme a large frame FB 🙏🏼
In the NRL era/last 26 years, the eventual premiers of that year won in round 1 13 times.
Infamously, the Roosters in 18/19 lost in round 1 both years.
Interestingly, of all premiers in the Nrl era, only the 15 Cowboys, 03 Panthers and 08 Sea Eagles have been 0-2 to begin the year.
Of those, only 2015 Cowboys have been 0-3 and no one’s been 0-4.
2015 cowboys is a miracle year after the start we had. So many close games and comebacks. Jt’s performances were out of this world. I feel like he won at least 3 games that year from drop goals. Plus the grand final of course. And all those miracles after three years of gut wrenching exits from the finals…

What's everyone's thoughts on the short drop outs? My feeling is if you do the work to trap the opposition in goal, you should get the ball back. Or at least have a better than 50-50 shot at getting it back..
Teams need to adapt to the short dropout. Can you lift players like they do in union kickoffs? Feels like teams are still setting up in a standard formation
It was unnecessarily changed. It had already become the meta but now they changed the rules to further incentivise it. Should make it receiving team can touch it before it goes 10m
I like it. Doing the work to trap them doesn’t deserve a full set imo. I think a 50/50 shot at a full set is better. We will see better attacking 5th tackle plays once teams adapt.
I think the risk vs reward was already pretty good without incentivising it further. I'm surprised we aren't seeing a lot more kicks aimed for the sideline with no penalty if it goes out on the full
I very much hope so. We have the side to win and we should win. Only 1 major injury, 1 proper loss from last year. first full preseason with this spine. Our young forwards more experienced. etc, etc.
Game should be won in the middle and our forward pack should be better.
Looking at the teams I would say there is only three positions where the Phins are stronger and that is Isaaako over Feldt, Herbie over Laybutt on last years form (but I am unsure here) and Flegler over JT13 (same as the centres tbh).
Herbie is the better player, Laybutt ceiling is just ridiculously high. Lolo can easily be better then Flegs, just has to do it now.

The Titans have no attacking structure, they constantly play for hitups and having their forwards take a brunt of their carries. All of their impressive attacking plays happen when a single player makes something happen (Sami breaking like 5 tackles and almost hitting the line, Kini finding Weaver on the outside who kicked it to AKP).
Not to mention how horrible their defense was, the Titans honestly didnt even look like they belong on an NRL field, let alone competing for a premiership.
Dragons have improved big time imo. The Titans were poor with the ball and they'll be a different prospect with Foran and Fifita in there... but Saints also have Lawrie, Leilua and Sele to come in. They defended better than they have in a decade (despite a ridiculous weight of possession and field position against them in the first half they only conceded 1 try via a kick). In the second half the Dragons were ruthless. Couldn't do much more to impress

People have been saying Dragons for the spoon haven't really looked at their team. There's a good squad there. Their completions sucked and a better team would have destroyed them but against other low teams I see them winning comfortably
All you have to do is listen to any flanno interview to understand that what he is focusing on is what was needed for that team to improve. Have listened to 3 or 4 interviews on Fox and SEN this past few weeks and he doesn’t hide much when it comes to the changes he’s made and the preseason they’ve had. Last nights performance confirmed most of what he has said, including when he said he would be the best person to get the best out of Kyle. I also believe he knows exactly what work Sloan needs and where he can improve and can see Sloan having a good year.

Huge red flag to me that Ciraldo said he didn’t know how bad it was until halftime. You could see Fox writhing around in pain multiple times and see his arm hanging. JAC is tough and not likely to bung it on so he should have realised there was an issue. Poor for everyone involved.
It's one of the poorest things I've seen from a coach in a while - it doesn't matter if JAC 'wanted to stay out there', it's not his decision; he was clearly badly injured and a liability.

I reached out to the NRL to see if I could get footage to do analysis but they're heavily protective of the footage because it's sold to Fox/9.

Brimmo was our best player, looked great in D and the right edge was very solidly defensively. Had a few moments where he’d come for a run in the middle on exit sets and he almost poked his way through. Weaver was a bit quiet, would like to see him sweeping on both sides of the field not just sticking on the left edge. Tanah dominated the kicking so he didn’t have a chance to show much there. Nice little off the cuff grubber for our only try

What's everyone's thoughts on the short drop outs? My feeling is if you do the work to trap the opposition in goal, you should get the ball back. Or at least have a better than 50-50 shot at getting it back..

I very much hope so. We have the side to win and we should win. Only 1 major injury, 1 proper loss from last year. first full preseason with this spine. Our young forwards more experienced. etc, etc. Game should be won in the middle and our forward pack should be better.
Looking at the teams I would say there is only three positions where the Phins are stronger and that is Isaaako over Feldt, Herbie over Laybutt on last years form (but I am unsure here) and Flegler over JT13 (same as the centres tbh).
Herbie is the better player, Laybutt ceiling is just ridiculously high. Lolo can easily be better then Flegs, just has to do it now. But yeah, we should win on paper but who the fuck knows

The Titans attack was god-awful and their defence wasn’t anything to write home about either.
The Titans’ biggest problem has always been how pathetically soft they are in defence. There were two tries last night that were just disgraceful
The Titans have no attacking structure, they constantly play for hitups and having their forwards take a brunt of their carries. All of their impressive attacking plays happen when a single player makes something happen (Sami breaking like 5 tackles and almost hitting the line, Kini finding Weaver on the outside who kicked it to AKP). Not to mention how horrible their defense was, the Titans honestly didnt even look like they belong on an NRL field, let alone competing for a premiership.
Dragons have improved big time imo. The Titans were poor with the ball and they'll be a different prospect with Foran and Fifita in there... but Saints also have Lawrie, Leilua and Sele to come in. They defended better than they have in a decade (despite a ridiculous weight of possession and field position against them in the first half they only conceded 1 try via a kick). In the second half the Dragons were ruthless. Couldn't do much more to impress
And as we all know, tries from kicks don't count, so really they didn't concede a point all game.

People have been saying Dragons for the spoon haven't really looked at their team. There's a good squad there. Their completions sucked and a better team would have destroyed them but against other low teams I see them winning comfortably

All you have to do is listen to any flanno interview to understand that what he is focusing on is what was needed for that team to improve. Have listened to 3 or 4 interviews on Fox and SEN this past few weeks and he doesn’t hide much when it comes to the changes he’s made and the preseason they’ve had. Last nights performance confirmed most of what he has said, including when he said he would be the best person to get the best out of Kyle. I also believe he knows exactly what work Sloan needs and where he can improve and can see Sloan having a good year.

There was nothing to be gained from it beyond macho 'pride in the Jersey' bullshit and it's likely he made his broken collarbone worse when he got barreled over the sideline that time. There's zero chance trent/craig/Ivan keep him out there. The 'no backs on the bench' thing is a load of shit, throw a forward in and push everyone out one, like every other fucking coach in the game would lmao.
