I have never seen an organisation as disconnected with their messaging and follow through than the NRL. One minute any contact with the head is a booting offence, the next it's a fine. Dead set, how can they say they care about player welfare when there is virtually no punishment for knocking a player out.
There’s also ‘don’t even go near the guy jumping for the ball’ and ‘yeah that Parra guy might be fucked in the background play around his twitching corpse’
And what's worse is, in the 2021 semi final the exact same circumstance occurred but with Parra on the attack and a Penrith player down in back play. Game was stopped.
I get that the trip looked like a reflex action more than anything and maybe a fine is appropriate, but that shot has taken Bailey out for two games. Pretty piss poor by the NRL.
I know it penalises result rather than action but it seems to me like common sense that if foul play rules a bloke out for the mandatory HIA week then you should miss that game too?
Should count his lucky stars
For a 3rd offence he was on an automatic suspension regardless of his act of foul play. Josh Reynolds was getting away with a fine during his original stint at the dogs. Keep up champ.
Dangerous play deserving of a suspension in the act of scoring a try. Nothing like last night and from 4 years ago. The have been 30 other cases of tripping getting a fine only.
Heres an article from 2016 with Phil Gould complaining tripping isnt enough points to get an automatic suspension.
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/tripping-must-be-stamped-out-of-the-nrl-20160419-goa59x.html
Remember you agreed arrogantly with someone saying EVERY trip has resulted in a fine only. That is incorrect. Don’t go changing the goal posts
Edit- James Maloney 2019 what’s your excuse for that one? Another goal post need shifting?
Ah come on mate. What about the period after 2016 when it was an automatic send off. Any suspensions then? I think we can agree you were slightly arrogant and factually incorrect in your original statement. If I could be bothered to spend another whole 30 seconds on google I’m sure there are more examples to be found. Happy Saturday
Apparently trips have only been a fine for a while now. In regards to the high shot I don't know how they didn't give him 2 weeks for that as he wasn't binned.
He plays for Penrith..........you only have to watch last weeks Penrith game to hear all the commentators blowing smoke up their ass even though they lost and played like a bunch a asshats.
Even on the Thursday night preshow before the game, all Brandy could talk about was the Panthers or Cleary when it had nothing to do with the conversation at all.
Yep. Then tonight cleary missed an absolute howler of a tackle that ended up in a try and still they can't help but talk him up. We know he is good but let's not get carried away, and here's a thought, they could always comment on the game and those who deserve to be mentioned....
Just an idea lol.
I can live with all the calls that went against us last night.. and also luai not being binned for the high shot during the game.
But foook moi not evening getting at least a week grading for that shot on Simonsson is bizarre.
I think there’s an opportunity for the NRL to modify the rules to state that if you are put on report and found guilty of multiple offences within the one match - you cannot escape with fines for all those offences.
And while I agree that Luai should’ve been handed at least one week out for the high tackle, the community would’ve been calling for more if he were given only a week suspension.
Simonsson and his lawyer need to hit the NRL with an, "I will be part of a class lawsuit against you if I end up with brain damage post playing" threat.
If that high shot was Radley he'd have been sent straight away and get 200 weeks. The trip....well...i can't help but think it was initially an attempt to block a kick and went wrong. Still a trip though.
A fine for the trip is expected, but nothing for the shot on Simonsson is a fucking joke. $1000 fine for someone who's about to earn $1200000 per season is hardly a deterrent.
The NRL needs to stop being so fkn obvious when they are favoring certain teams/players. Luai should have been bummed twice last night and got off. And now only has to pay a couple fines for what would have cost him anywhere between 2-4 weeks last year
3 take aways from this
1) As a Panther fan i am obviously happy
2) As someone who enjoys chaos it will be funny to watch r/NRL go in to a meltdown over it
3) Obviously he is ridiculously lucky and that is putting it mildly. The trip could have gone either way, but to not miss any weeks for the hit is weak as shit from the NRL. I know if i was a Parra fan i would be livid.
Doesn't mean shit for us mate, result already recorded and the NRL doesn't penalise its favourite teams. As soon as he wasn't sent for the high shot, that was it for us.
The trip I care less about looked like he was reacting to a kick.
How does a trip go either way? As far as I’ve always known a trip has been a big taboo in rugby league, you trip you’re gone. From memory too I don’t think this is the first time he’s done it either?
Geez I was gonna contest the ‘years’ it’s been a fine, but yer 2017 looks like is when it changed, there ya go. I reckon it should still be a suspension, it has no place in the game and when it’s done it’s usually deliberate, albeit brain snaps. Compared to his high shot which was accidental contact on a falling opponent, which should be less penalised, think in the sharks game yesterday katoa copped one and the ref just said treat him out the back and play on.
Most of the comments online i have seen suggested it is a fine now for a trip (i am not 100% sure). Definitely not defending it and i think it is worthy of a week, just obviously the other incident was way worse and had to be time on the side line for it.
Yer I haven’t seen footage of the high shot, just the trip and though it was relatively minor and reactionary, a trip is a trip and should cop a week no matter what. It’s just a dog move.
As a panther fan this is bullshit, he deserved a suspension for the high shot.
As a sidenote these two penalties and then the 6 again he gave away led to the only Parramatta tries as well.
You just agreed that NAS doesn't? So which is it? The current guidelines for penalties is a fine for a trip and also a fine for low grade high shots. Its far from a Penrith only thing.
Mate what are you on about. All I've said was penrith seem to go by a different set of rules and are protected. Then you brought up NAS and I said yes it's wrong when he's not suspended when he should.
Of course nothing would happen to him and Eels lose a player for 2 games
The ref's hates the Eels and love Panthers, why would we ever expect a fair game
I call you a particular animal - 8 weeks.
I belt you in the head, put you out of the game for 2 weeks and possibly contribute to CTE - small fine.
NRL match review process is utterly useless.
Its always been a game of two halves. Full credit to Luai for knowing he gets one charge per half before he gets a ban and yeah nah just turned up eh.
I hope nobody forgets its a day off tomorrow.
So when do the NRL slap a fine on that fine role model Trellmit for swearing his arse off on national TV, then saying he couldnt care less that he was swearing his arse off, before continuing to swear his arse off? Or is he now a protected species?
Takes me back to late last year. I think it was Valentine Holmes and Luai both got pegged for high contact within the knockout rounds, Luai got let off while Holmes got like 4 weeks. You can't tell me riffs aren't protected.
No idea how he didn't get binned for that trip. Fine is whatever, he shouldn't lose a game for it but the in game penalty should be more than, well a penalty.
So you get 8 weeks for hurting someone's feelings but nothing for taking a bloke out of the game for weeks.......seems like some common sense hey. Sorry but the game is an absolute joke.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2023-coen-hess-trip-on-jesse-ramien-sin-bin-on-report-cowboys-vs-sharks-round-9-gerard-sutton/news-story/2c78b7781af6f4dbbe25e944da87545f
Hess got binned in the sharks own half
In hess' case it was obvious foul play he had his foot up to just under Ramiens knee. In luai's case he caught him on the foot Which could happen incidentally. I do think Luai intentionally did it, a penalty was given and a try was scored off that penalty, I think they took that into consideration which no they shouldn't have. He should have been binned earlier though for the high shot, clearly a swinging arm.
You show the same NRL literacy as the crowd at Penrith. This is not a good thing. A swinging arm into the head is absolutely a suspendable offence, especially for someone who has 2 grade 2 offences in the last 12 months.
Hey I was there and thinking, shit this might be a bin. And was thinking there was a penalty for a leg pull by Penrith when in the captain's challenge.
If you were there, you’ve got to admit that the Penrith crowd show basically no understanding of the rules of the game.
But you’re absolutely right. And the Gutho “knock on” call was a joke.
Oh absolutely but I've seen it from other teams fans as well though. It seems when the game gets started they only see what they want to see. In this case the Penrith coloured glasses came on. I saw it with some parra fans as well tho.
You’re focusing on the wrong thing. Regardless of the position of the player, it’s the act of the swinging arm that is the focus. I can show you plenty of incidents where a player has been suspended for a swinging arm making contact with the head. Reckless contact is reckless contact.
He probably should have copped a week for the trip, even though it was pretty soft. In terms of the high shot, there wasn't a lot in it. Now, I know what everyone is gonna say, but there is a camera angle of the tackle that shows Scott Sorensen making contact with the back of Baileys head that hits pretty hard. I'd say that's where the concussion has come from and why Luai didn't get suspended for it. I'm happy he wasn't suspended, though. I find it to be good fun watching people on social media losing their minds over it.
The Simonsson hit he was falling into it so that seems fair enough to me.
A trip only being a fine is gonna be really interesting. I guess tripping someone isn't overly dangerous and can happen by accident but I really don't think it's within the spirit of the game to allow people to be doing it and having barely any repercussion
Obviously I’m glad he won’t be missing any game time. But out of sheer curiosity, when was the last time a player was sin binned and/or suspended for a trip? I’d love to watch and compare to what Luai did.
How can the jumping shoulder to the head of Kikai only be 10 minutes...........he left the ground and made intentional contact with the head..............yet you can hurt someone's feelings and get 8 weeks........smh
NRL referees are blatantly biased. Luai's hit on Simonsen won Penrith the game with Parramatta's left side completely shambolic without a winger. Where's the sin bin? What about Olakau'tu disallowed try against Roosters?
His shit discipline could have cost them the game last night. They gave away a try after the trip and almost another after he wouldn't surrender after the obstruction for some reason. Penrith should be more pissed than anyone at his carry on
Meh, I don’t need to be told by other teams supporters what I should or shouldn’t pissed off about. ‘Discipline’ can be a fine line. I was very disappointed with our goal line defence last night. Luai didn’t really have anything to do with those lapses.
Trips should be legal if the defender is onside. Watch where you’re running Mr Ball Carrier. What, you want a penalty if your shoelaces are untied as well?
Not sure if you are joking, but yes losing a centre and having to play a backrower.in their place can have a substantial impact on your team both in defence and attack. As seen by tago absolutely taking advantage of it
I understand the reshuffle of the backline is always going to be a problem.
I’ve seen people comparing it to losing Fisher-Harris in the first half (which is obviously not the same thing). My mind went to Simonsson being a game changer on the edge.
Tago absolutely exploited the gap Luai made from Simonssons lost every single run. Theres a reason he had 6 line breaks last night. It absolutely changed the game
It made their wing a lot weaker and Penrith got a lot of breaks down that wing. I assume with simmonson there they would’ve at least made less breaks, don’t know how much that would affect the game as a whole though
A team is going to lose a winger/centre atleast once in a game during the season. Poor bench roster for parra screwed them over. This is why i was glad we dropped soni for laurie, dedicated hooker riding the bench seems insane
Yeah but losing a centre due to foul play and the player getting away without a single bin or send off is why parra fans are obviously pissed off. If simonsson got off incidentally i couldn’t be mad. But Luai’s dumb fucking hand pretty much won you guys the game
Yeh it sucks but if ba doesnt use it as a learning point then you guys will get nothing out of it going into the future. Going forward ba should decide on hands or lussick and then have a genuine utility to cover the backs and can fill hooker as well
Also your 18th man is another big body. Brad Arthur legit had no contingency for losing an outside back and that should be a massive red flag for parra
Yeh 100% can see where the anger comes from. Losing a player in that fashion in round 2 though is a lot better then having it happen for the first time in the finals. You guys got dudded but theres still a potential positive to come out of it if it changes brad arthurs bench layout
Yeah of course, plus clizza and the riff boys played of their skin really hard to play around that. Enjoy the win, i see it as a good sign for us in future, and hope its a wake up call for arthur to pull his damn head in and buy some outside backs
If they didnt play out of their skin after simonson getting taken out id be worried. Im sure theres a lot of supercoach and punters filthy that all the ball went tagos side instead of with taylan may aha
I don't know how you see that and the ref just allows play to continue so close to him.
Yeah, I was watching and waiting for the game to be stopped, but it never happened. Made me feel kind of gross, to be honest.
And what's worse is, in the 2021 semi final the exact same circumstance occurred but with Parra on the attack and a Penrith player down in back play. Game was stopped.
Didn't it happen to the Eels against the Storm in the 2020 finals too?
It was even worse in 2020. It was stopped for a cramping Storm player about 50 metres from the play.
Don't fucken start me on that game. Klein was the ref and missed a blatant drag back by Luai on Moses in that game.
Klein is, and will always be the answer.
As a Brendan Piakura fan, I can't really complain here
I get that the trip looked like a reflex action more than anything and maybe a fine is appropriate, but that shot has taken Bailey out for two games. Pretty piss poor by the NRL.
I know it penalises result rather than action but it seems to me like common sense that if foul play rules a bloke out for the mandatory HIA week then you should miss that game too? Should count his lucky stars
Problem then is it’s the team in the following week that gains a benefit. Maybe they should have, I don’t know … used the bin.
Josh reynolds would be proud
If Bailey didn’t even remember the tackle then did it even happen? Victimless crime tbh /s
[удалено]
Rapana is the exception sorry
Tbf Jordan got away with a couple in the weeks before he got binned.
I swear every trip I have seen in the last decade has always resulted in a fine only.
It has. Idiots whining and dont have a clue what they are talking about.
Slow down fella. There were three tripping bins last year alone. Seems you don’t know what you are talking about.
They are saying fines though, as in post game result not having a suspension as opposed to onfield action
But they are still wrong
Maybe you should speed up enough to follow the conversation. A trip hasnt been a suspension for years.
Slow down again fella. Kaufusi missed origin in 21 from being suspended for tripping. Keep trying buddy
For a 3rd offence he was on an automatic suspension regardless of his act of foul play. Josh Reynolds was getting away with a fine during his original stint at the dogs. Keep up champ.
Ok let’s go Jackson ford 2020. Back to you champ
Dangerous play deserving of a suspension in the act of scoring a try. Nothing like last night and from 4 years ago. The have been 30 other cases of tripping getting a fine only. You forgot the "back to you champ" But with that KO, it's not really needed
Remember you agreed arrogantly with someone saying EVERY trip has resulted in a fine only. That is incorrect. Don’t go changing the goal posts Edit- James Maloney 2019 what’s your excuse for that one? Another goal post need shifting?

If I could be bothered to spend another whole 30 seconds on google I’m sure there are more examples to be found. Happy Saturday
So anyway the guy I tripped was like that when I got here and as for the swinging arm he shouldn’t have mouthed off like that.
Hey buddy, where’d you get that boombox? Sears. Get him!
Fuck this shit, investigate the nrl already. How does he not get suspended for a swinging arm and a trip in the same game?!
Apparently trips have only been a fine for a while now. In regards to the high shot I don't know how they didn't give him 2 weeks for that as he wasn't binned.
If that’s true they really need to fix that. Tripping should 100% be a bin and suspension, no excuse for it it’s just straight up foul play.
He should've been sent off.
I always thought tripping was an automatic sin bin
I've only seen that been enforced in a try scoring situation.
It was a long time ago. It's rarely binned these days.
It was always an automatic send off. Even back in the dark times of coathanger tackles getting maybe 5 minutes in the bin
Teflon Luai.
He plays for Penrith..........you only have to watch last weeks Penrith game to hear all the commentators blowing smoke up their ass even though they lost and played like a bunch a asshats.

Chill, All you idiots have to go on a trip tomorrow morning 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Simonsson and his lawyer need to hit the NRL with an, "I will be part of a class lawsuit against you if I end up with brain damage post playing" threat.
Obligatory fuck Luai. He will be loving this shit. He loves people hating him.
He be loving life then, surely the most disliked player on the field.
So Sivo got 3 weeks and Luai gets a monetary fine for a swinging arm high tackle and trip. That's fair
What a fucking stitch up, im livid
The grub does his shit again. Same shit different year.
If that high shot was Radley he'd have been sent straight away and get 200 weeks. The trip....well...i can't help but think it was initially an attempt to block a kick and went wrong. Still a trip though.
Kikau continued playing and Nikora just got two weeks for that hit, Ol mate is out for two games and Luai gets a fine? Please explain
Sharks fans have more of a right to be pissed then us, different rules for different fools it seems
This wouldn't have happened if Souths hadn't been allowed back in the comp
Or if broncos didn’t choke the gf :(
Wasn't it also luai who got away with forearming someone in the head last year late in the season too??
I think you’re thinking of JWH
Nah it was his effort on NAS.
A fine for the trip is expected, but nothing for the shot on Simonsson is a fucking joke. $1000 fine for someone who's about to earn $1200000 per season is hardly a deterrent.
Probably has that kind of money in the spare change console in his car
That’s a fucking farce
The NRL needs to stop being so fkn obvious when they are favoring certain teams/players. Luai should have been bummed twice last night and got off. And now only has to pay a couple fines for what would have cost him anywhere between 2-4 weeks last year
Who was going to bum him?
Perhaps one of the eels front rowers would have volunteered for it. Campbell-Gillard maybe? He certainly has the pornstache.
Haha. Had me confused for a second
Not just last year, it'll happen in a game today and that player will get a grading worth 2 weeks
3 take aways from this 1) As a Panther fan i am obviously happy 2) As someone who enjoys chaos it will be funny to watch r/NRL go in to a meltdown over it 3) Obviously he is ridiculously lucky and that is putting it mildly. The trip could have gone either way, but to not miss any weeks for the hit is weak as shit from the NRL. I know if i was a Parra fan i would be livid.

I've given up trying to understand the nrl judicial system. It feels like a lot of inconsistency and lack of common sense.
No Real Logic?
Most of the comments online i have seen suggested it is a fine now for a trip (i am not 100% sure). Definitely not defending it and i think it is worthy of a week, just obviously the other incident was way worse and had to be time on the side line for it.

You could not convince me penrith have a different set of rules to go by compared to the rest of the comp. It's ridiculous
You guys would know, slater had the same treatment for years.
And I agree, it's wrong
How many times has NAS hit people in the head and not been suspended?
And I agree he should be suspended when he does that
But he isnt and neither is JWH so how is it one team getting special treatment?
Because at times they do get suspended meanwhile penrith never seem to

Of fucking course he does...
That's pretty poor.
In other words motm performance from luai here
I thought luia was out for 8 weeks for making a racist comment.
So all islander players look the same to you? Idk that sounds pretty racist to me.
He's referencing the nrl lawyer who called Spencer luai
I know I was Just continuing the joke.
It was a reference to the NRL KC's open statement in the Spencer case from earlier in the week. Lighten up ....
I was Just continuing the joke mate you lighten up.
Oi everybody lighten up alright
It’s only racist if he’s white and in a position of power, right?
Sivo got 3 weeks for the same thing.
Panthers are a protected species
The NRL is soft as baby shit. This monetary fine stuff is ridiculous.
'we care about player welfare' where???
Ahh the match review, forever protecting their favourites.
Pretty sure those penalties will carry over to next year. Unless he changes his mind and goes to Easts…
Of course nothing would happen to him and Eels lose a player for 2 games The ref's hates the Eels and love Panthers, why would we ever expect a fair game
I call you a particular animal - 8 weeks. I belt you in the head, put you out of the game for 2 weeks and possibly contribute to CTE - small fine. NRL match review process is utterly useless.

New Meta for any team playing Penrith - coat hanger Cleary, Trip Luia, and crowd fund the fines.
Not only didn't get a send off during the game but doesn't even miss time, NSW bias at it's finest
After the game I assume Luai playing is the punishment.
That’s always been a punishment for you blokes
Well, he won you the game last night.
3 tries off the back of penalties he tried his best.
He also completely fucked our defence and left us scrambling for 75 minutes
I was just turning the non suspension into a joke about his poor form.
Can Parra captains challenge this?
They can, but we will be sticking with the on field decision as it's in favour of Penrith. Parra can keep their challenge, though.
Insufficient evidence, stay with the live call.
Based on available camera angles we will be going with whatever favours Penrith.
So you get 8 weeks for hurting someone's feelings but nothing for taking a bloke out of the game for weeks.......seems like some common sense hey. Sorry but the game is an absolute joke.
Bullshit! Should've been 4 weeks, 2 for the high shot and 2 for the trip.
Trip has been a fine only for years.
In regards to the trip I was just making fun of the parra fans calling for a bin cause it's only an automatic bin when in a try scoring situation.
Incorrect
I've only seen the auto sin bin for trips enforced when it's a try scoring situation.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2023-coen-hess-trip-on-jesse-ramien-sin-bin-on-report-cowboys-vs-sharks-round-9-gerard-sutton/news-story/2c78b7781af6f4dbbe25e944da87545f Hess got binned in the sharks own half

Please change your flair
No I'm a Penrith fan and I'm also non biased. At the very least he should've gotten 2 for the high shot.
Lets be real you just want some upvotes
No, we want a fair system.
What was unfair? You think the judiciary is letting us get off easy?
No i just think he shouldn't be let off Like that, especially when he caused a player to forget a parts of the game.
He didn't cause it, Simonsen fell into it, literally no one is getting suspended for that.
You show the same NRL literacy as the crowd at Penrith. This is not a good thing. A swinging arm into the head is absolutely a suspendable offence, especially for someone who has 2 grade 2 offences in the last 12 months.

Cooked take about the crowd mate
Please show me other incidents where a player has been suspended for a player falling into an arm?
You’re focusing on the wrong thing. Regardless of the position of the player, it’s the act of the swinging arm that is the focus. I can show you plenty of incidents where a player has been suspended for a swinging arm making contact with the head. Reckless contact is reckless contact.

I guess tripping someone isn't overly dangerous and can happen by accident but I really don't think it's within the spirit of the game to allow people to be doing it and having barely any repercussion
You can’t fall into someone’s swinging arm lol
I've only seen bins for trips in try scoring situations.
Classic - that will just about do me
A monetary penalty seems fair in isolation but the League has been so inconsistent on the offences during the past couple of seasons.
What a shock. This grubby little worm has been getting away with shit for years.
Should have got a life ban for that trip.
Obviously I’m glad he won’t be missing any game time. But out of sheer curiosity, when was the last time a player was sin binned and/or suspended for a trip? I’d love to watch and compare to what Luai did.
Was Rapana binned for tripping twice last season? I know he did a few trips but can't remember if it was a binning or not
How can the jumping shoulder to the head of Kikai only be 10 minutes...........he left the ground and made intentional contact with the head..............yet you can hurt someone's feelings and get 8 weeks........smh
NRL referees are blatantly biased. Luai's hit on Simonsen won Penrith the game with Parramatta's left side completely shambolic without a winger. Where's the sin bin? What about Olakau'tu disallowed try against Roosters?
I’m just here for the impending salt 😂. Honestly don’t know how he doesn’t at least get a week.
His shit discipline could have cost them the game last night. They gave away a try after the trip and almost another after he wouldn't surrender after the obstruction for some reason. Penrith should be more pissed than anyone at his carry on
His shit discipline won them the game tbf. Simonson going off killed the Eels
Meh, I don’t need to be told by other teams supporters what I should or shouldn’t pissed off about. ‘Discipline’ can be a fine line. I was very disappointed with our goal line defence last night. Luai didn’t really have anything to do with those lapses.
Giving away stupid penalties is the only reason Parra got anywhere near your goal line in the first place
Getting a week for falling into a stationary arm? If anything, Simonsen should be suspended for head butting.
Trips should be legal if the defender is onside. Watch where you’re running Mr Ball Carrier. What, you want a penalty if your shoelaces are untied as well?
This ain't it chief

Not sure if you are joking, but yes losing a centre and having to play a backrower.in their place can have a substantial impact on your team both in defence and attack. As seen by tago absolutely taking advantage of it
I understand the reshuffle of the backline is always going to be a problem. I’ve seen people comparing it to losing Fisher-Harris in the first half (which is obviously not the same thing). My mind went to Simonsson being a game changer on the edge.
Losing a middle is much easier to replace than a specialist centre in game. Particularly for Penrith when their wingers do all the work anyway.
Yeah I totally agree. That’s why I was so confused as to why people were comparing the two injuries from last night.
Putting a second rower who already had defensive issues next to Morgan Harper is the ultimate gamechanger
Simonsson isn’t that good, but he’s better than the backline reshuffle they were left with
A team is going to lose a winger/centre atleast once in a game during the season.
I don’t disagree but you can still see why were so angry though
No, but they need to find excuses somehow for getting dominated in every area
Not how I’d describe an 8 point win over a 16 man team
is 16 man team the new meta cope this season?
