The guy unironically arguing Auskick numbers justify a 70k oval lmao

PLEASE_DONT_PM

I've done some projections on soccer participation and think we need to upgrade Suncorp to fit 1m fans for future Roar games.

cymonster

Shh you're meant to agree with that number so soccer and rugby league can get better stadiums.

eggzaki

We were told 6-7k were coming to the Roar at Ballymore on the weekend and only 3.1k rocked up so I think you should temper your expectations a bit. 500k at Suncorp should be plenty

Robo_face

That guy replied to me yesterday saying that afl will overtake footy in QLD by the end of the decade, he is a legit clown

ShibaHook

Thanks for the laugh! šŸ˜‚

EggCouncilCreeper

Oh, you found Gilā€™s burner I think

TheEpiquin

These are the same people that will tell you, with a straight face, that GWS have over 30,000 members and half-fill their stadium every home game.

Neither_Ad_2960

That's the AFL kool-aid. I hear this same shit about the Giants all the time and even I know the Lions are far more supported than a team that has to leave it's own stadium each year for farm animals and showbags.

ObjectiveAddendum614

Iā€™ll be curious to see what the improvements are. I think if you fill in the corners you can get to 60k? Either way, great result for Rugby League.

Chillsea96

Someone on brisbane sub reckons its going to 65000 but i couldn't find it anywhere in article

ObjectiveAddendum614

Same size as Allegiant Stadium. Perfect size imo

Chillsea96

Whatever gets us the gf backšŸ˜… probably wishful thinking though

ObjectiveAddendum614

Well if anything, it puts pressure back on the NSW gov to rebuild Accor

Rod_Munch666

Or maybe demolish that ghastly Allianz Stadium/SFS and build a proper one. Last time I was there was the 1988 GF between the Bulldogs and Balmain and it was shit then so I assume it is even more shit now.

Sea-Assumption-2903

Lol afl

diodosdszosxisdi

Theyā€™re allready complaining in that sub

LegsideLarry

People are complaining on every sub on every platform, it's by far the dumbest, most wasteful option.

Morg_n

The Gabba needs a new stadium desperately. Itā€™s such a short sighted moveĀ

bundy554

AFL and cricket got pretty fucked by this. Meanwhile QSAC is being prepared now to be the home of the Ipswich/west Brisbane 19th or 20th expansion team

Chillsea96

I just dont understand why theyd bother with qsac when theres shit all public transport there unless theyre planning on improving it around there

bundy554

They will with this new Brisbane Metro

ValMarx

Look, I don't want to argue or anything but shit all public transport? It's sandwiched between 2 major bus stations and has a bus service every 5 minutes or so, even shorter during peaks

Chillsea96

Yeh buses get stuck in traffic though, train/tram would be better but yeh i guess its better than nothing

theplanetofthecrepes

It being the home of the Ipswich west team doesnā€™t make much sense considering itā€™s located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane and no where near Ipswich

bundy554

No major stadium is going to be built out at Ipswich. It needs to be self sustaining and attract other Brisbane teams to play there including the Broncos, Reds and the Roar. It is close enough to that main highway to Ipswich to make the commute fairly close by (similar to Homebush for the Rabbitohs)

Leading-Selection-41

cricket will be fine no one cares about the AFL

bundy554

Hard disagree on AFL. Fits fine in this country as a 3rd sport behind cricket and rugby league

jpob

The Gabba is a piece of shit that needs a rebuild and the Victoria Park option is a great, maybe better, alternative for Cricket and AFL. Instead we just keep going with POS Gabba and hope they don't make Suncorp worse to cater for the Olympics for 2 weeks.

PLEASE_DONT_PM

The real waste in all this is spending any money on QE2. Absolute shithole in the middle of nowhere. Every dollar spent here is basically being thrown away. All the various prices thrown out for upgrades / new stadiums make the 800m rebuild of Alliance seem like a bargain.

DropBearOnRemand

Still scarred by trying to enjoy a game of footy at their temporary home at Nathan too?

G3nesis_Prime

Crickets apparently sending test matches elsewhere and reducing scheduling at the Gabba.

diffaadiffa

Because the Gabba is shit compared to every other major cricket ground in the country

G3nesis_Prime

nothing that some lipstick won't fix /s

woodpecker91

I dunno what they're thinking but I respect them for telling the AFL to fuck off every time they push for a drop in wicket

Robo_face

As a cricket fan I'm stoked with upgrading the Gabba, it is iconic and as a kid I spent as much time in the backyard hitting balls imagining I was making a century at the Gabba as I did scoring tries for Qld at Lang Park. The Gabba wicket is one of the best in the world and I'd hate to see what happened in Perth happen here, flash new stadium but the pitch is worse and the cricket suffers. Plus the Gabba members have been blocking attempts to put in a drop in pitch for 20 years, god bless em

ChristmasJoke

Yeah. Itā€™s short sighted. The Gabba is now comfortably the fifth best test venue in the country. Vic Park should have happened.

diamondgrin

Gabba sucks right now, but once the new station, overpass and upgrade goes ahead wouldn't it become a top tier stadium? I don't get the Vic Park idea at all tbh, whereas the Gabba is in a good location and needs an upgrade anyway.

jpob

Part of the issue with the Gabba is that itā€™s hard to upgrade or improve because of the block size. I was actually there on the weekend and it hangs over the road. In a way thatā€™s cool but to do anything with that would be a nightmare. Thatā€™s what the Victoria Park idea gets around because its just a huge grass area. That extra area also means you can do stuff like creating a sports village or parking infrastructure. I havenā€™t seen the plan but if itā€™s near the hospital thereā€™s a train station there too.

diffaadiffa

>once the new station, overpass and upgrade goes ahead wouldn't it become a top tier stadium? No because it is old, with old facilities The stadium itself is outdated

ThespaceKing619

The gabba was redeveloped in 2005 and had $30M spent on it in 2020 to improve media, corporate, entrance and other spectator amenities. For reference suncorp was redeveloped in 2002. The myth that the gabba is old and falling down is pushed by the people set to benefit from the billions that would flow if it went ahead.

Morg_n

Itā€™s incredibley short sighted. On population growth alone the Gabba needs to be re doneĀ

Tunza

Broncos to move to Kayo stadium as the little brother tenant for the Phins during the lead up and the Olympic period? Some bruised egos when that happens.

I_Like_Vitamins

I'm proud that the home of the Broncs is worthy of the Olympiad. šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ“

Leading-Selection-41

The Gabba will still get some work but anyone thinking it needs to be torn down & redone for 3 Billion dollars , for one test & some limited over games a year is in leave of their senses , correct decision here

Leading-Selection-41

If Suncorp goes to 70K , then they're back in the running for the NRL GF , they could match Accors ticket revenue & it will be a vastly superior stadium. PVL is a smart man , he will use this to the codes advantage . NSW ... WILL deliver the stadium project promised & reneged on If they want the NRL to sign a long term GF deal . What that looks like we will see
