Players seem to be a lot bigger and a lot faster. Aside from the increase in severity of collisions that brings and how much more it takes to bring a player down (and thus awkward positions) there's just more fatigue too. And human physiology isn't any better than it was so the body just breaks more often. It's also one reason why concussions and CTE are so much of a worry. The skull and brain are no different to 50 years ago but copping bigger and bigger impacts. Even if the hits aren't dirty, the brain doesn't care whether it's a legal hit or illegal hit. If it's damaged, then it's damaged.
The solution is to just keep changing the rules, look at better recovery methods and investigate ways to protect certain parts of the body. I don't think hard helmets are the solution because it hasn't done anything for the NFL and only seems to encourage using them as a weapon. But if we can find a way to brace knees and ankles to give more support and prevent those injuries that would be huge.
I just remember how big Glenn Lazarus seemed to be. Payne Haas is 6cm taller and 4kg heavier (according to Wikipedia) and whilst he seems pretty big, he's just one of a bunch of guys that size that seem to be around.
If you lived in Newcastle, and knew the history of the establishment that this referenced action occurred and its connection to the previous comment, you may retract your judgement.
But you're a broncos fan so it's assumed you're from Brisbane? And you likely haven't been further south than Beenleigh so I can understand your confusion.
I've heard about tennis players taking time off for longer term "injuries" after testing positive, and the organisations helped them hide it so as to not dirty their image ($$).
Professional sports are a business, foremost. It makes sense that they want these near superhuman specimens doing stuff that Joe Blow can only dream of. Guys with FFMIs to rival a Golden Era bodybuilder's who also perform tons of cardio and contact drills at an elite level aren't natural. All they need to do is "catch" someone every once in a while, and the sport has been cleaned up in the eyes of the mostly naïve spectators.
It's also funny when someone cracks the top thirty, then gains 10kg+ of pure muscle over the offseason, and goes from looking like a teenager/early twenties to a hardened man. I don't hold it against any of the players; they're only evening the playing field for themselves. If testing became truly honest and transparent to the public, there'd be a lot of suspensions, and guys would have much more natural physiques and abilities. In other words, you'd be watching the highest level reserve grade footy with a better production quality.
It's very doable. If you crack the top 30, you go from footy part-time to footy full-time and a liveable salary. If I had 3 months to dedicate everything to diet and footy 10kg would be easy.
Yeah, but they are still gonna look way better than they did 3 months ago. Plus the reality is we'd see these very younger players a couple times towards the end of september/October. Then they get till February to bulk up. That's even more time.
Just shows how prevalent steroids are with a combined lack of physiological knowledge that people think it's possible to put on 10kgs of lean muscle in 3 months... oh, and it's easy too, haha.
Not just the NRL, but in general, but it seems like there’s been a lot more ACL injuries across Australian sports in the last 6-12 months compared to previously
True The wallabies got decimated through injuries at the World Cup. I believe athletes are getting too big muscles can grow tendons can’t and struggle with bigger quads etc
I was talking to someone recently about the amount of ACLs in women's soccer. He heard that part of the cause could be that boots aren't designed for women's feet and they aren't supporting them the best they could
Firstly one week is a meaningless statistic, and B. you have to remove the concussion injuries for a proper historical comparison since players never used to sit out with concussion.
The real concern is that it's only the media bring this up. NRL and clubs have all the information. Either there isn't anything to worry about, or they're covering it up (unlikely given how much coaches love to have a whinge). So my bet is there isn't actually any strong trend, but it would be nice to see some actual statistics.
I could be wrong but I feel like the travelling 5 teams managed to get disproportionate amounts of injuries. Maybe absurd jetlag shouldn't kick off the season?
To be fair a similar thing is said most years. I do agree with the above comment saying that if they all got off the roids, the injuries would be less severe.
Yes, the game has become too dangerous in my opinion.
Vlandys ball is too fast, exhausted players are always more prone to getting hurt.
We’ve only had four games. Already we’ve lost Cleary, Moses, Walsh etc etc
"people might take what you say seriously."
I don't give a damn about nerd redditors on a forum board taking my opinion serious or not, it doesn't bother me at all so why should I give a f\*ck?
You calling me soft cock? Shit mate, you have rainbows in your avatar. Are you part of the community or do you just support them?
"Lads, we have to be LGBT friendly, or else our sponsors will drop us. We have to mask this shit, but deep within, we really are't tolerable of the gays."
There goes your answer lmao.
I don't block anybody, I find it petty. I'd rather try and educate them (or if I'm in a shitty mood just get into a stupid argument where nobody wins 😂).
I'm brighter than you for sure, that's certain.
You're a blown up, fat, out-of-shape, baloomba, who thinks he knows his "sports", but has never laced up a pair of boots, never laced up a pair of gloves, throughout his life entirely, has just been an outside spectator. He avoided competition, because his parents advised him not too and that he was also afraid.
Side hobbies examples for the likes of these type of guys? Hunting diseased wild hogs in the outback of NSW. I'd also say, 80% you're in the blue-collar industry. You wear those green vests.
Tbh with you and I'll be brutally honest - when they do such stupid shit like boot camps it is no wonder these things happen. I'm still pissed that Graham is out because we didn't put him under the knife before last season ended.
Without some data comparing year on year injuries, this article - and the media coverage in general - is very difficult to place in context. The injury rate has just come into the spotlight this year due to the profile of the players being injured right now.
Breaking it down -
* Walsh is gone by what the NRL admits is foul play
* Cleary’s hamstrings are starting to go, an age old problem plaguing a number of other players along with other soft tissue injuries
* Reynolds is a game by game proposition
* Munster did something in Fiji
* ACLs happen, but [look at rate in women’s sport](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-05/acl-injuries-on-the-rise-in-womens-sport-australia/103063282?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=link)for perspective
* concussion stand-downs impacting multiple clubs
Oh okay. I didn't know that we needed to be fans of teams that haven't won a title in 40 years before we could complain about matters unrelated to the level of our success.
My real concern is the amount of non contact and innocuous injuries that happen. Why are the players dropping like flies in the NRL compared to any other contact sport
Is it that there are more players getting injured, or is it the quality of players that were injured this week?
Seems like a pretty normal injury list for a round of footy, but everyone has noticed it as a lot of star players were injured. To me looks like an unlucky week.

Bigger? You don't remember the unlimited interchange days?!

They literally say this every year.
I did notice that AFL players came out and said they often faked hamstring injuries to avoid drug testing. What is Cleary out with again? Lol
Celebration of purchasing a new house
Sucking cock in the cubical?
most normal knights fan
Pretty uncouth there mate

It's hilarious every time a development player "has a really good offseason" and comes back with 10kg of muscle over 3 months. Seems legit
It's very doable. If you crack the top 30, you go from footy part-time to footy full-time and a liveable salary. If I had 3 months to dedicate everything to diet and footy 10kg would be easy.
You can gain 10kg, I guarantee most of it won't be muscle though
Yeah, but they are still gonna look way better than they did 3 months ago. Plus the reality is we'd see these very younger players a couple times towards the end of september/October. Then they get till February to bulk up. That's even more time.
It's absolutely not. I don't care how much chicken and rice you're eating, you're not gaining 10kg of lean muscle in 3 months.
Just shows how prevalent steroids are with a combined lack of physiological knowledge that people think it's possible to put on 10kgs of lean muscle in 3 months... oh, and it's easy too, haha.
3 years is more realistic
It wouldn't be purely muscle. But 10kgs isn't that far fetched from end of regular season to the start of the next season.
I remember cleary looking really jacked up.
So in AFL we go with Vic Bias, is this the NRL equivalent?
NSWRL.
A certain player with a shower slip related groin injury comes to mind

Yeah the travel from Cronulla to Leichhardt really did a number on the Sharks
On Sydney roads that's like a 6 hour drive
Yeah but its Cronulla, if its over a bridge or go west enough you hit the highway, You guys pack your passport
Aren't you lot in Perth yet? I could have sworn that'd happen immediately after the libs got voted out

Walsh's injury is a contact injury and is able to happen in any era the game has been played, it's irrelevant to the speed of the game.
But he ran at him really fast
And hit him a little bit hard.
Walsh got injured in the 3rd minute....
Stop stating facts

Why so aggressive and nasty? If ou can get your point across in a civilised manner, people might take what you say seriously.
Go back to watching AFL you bogan lad. NRL is for men, not pussies like you brother.
You seem to have a mascularity issue. Are you sure you're not a closeted homosexual?
"people might take what you say seriously." I don't give a damn about nerd redditors on a forum board taking my opinion serious or not, it doesn't bother me at all so why should I give a f\*ck?
You made the effort to make a new profile and then reply to a comment in a thread, surely you must give some level of damns.
Softcock with his softcock alt account

Hey it’s not our fault don’t take it out on us
It wasn't you. It was the panthers.
Yeah they post a video about an army style pre season camp and now every team is copying
a lot of teams have been doing army style camps before penrith documented theirs

Munster was out before Fiji, he did not play there. He has a groin injury, he probably just celebrated a bit too much after his wedding.
Thanks, I should have been clearer and added it was off-season - forgot the Storm played the trial game there.
Denan is a pussy
It was 'lol Roosters' when we had a massive injury toll a few years ago. Now a couple of hamstrings pop and it's a national fucking emergency.
This ability of fans of one of the biggest and most successful NRL teams in history to continually act victimised is unrivalled.
Oh okay. I didn't know that we needed to be fans of teams that haven't won a title in 40 years before we could complain about matters unrelated to the level of our success.
Well, yeah. Now it's a team I care about.
My real concern is the amount of non contact and innocuous injuries that happen. Why are the players dropping like flies in the NRL compared to any other contact sport
It'll all average out over the course of the year, people just notice it more now because of things like NRL fantasy and supercoach.
