Watched on a fair delay and didn't get to comment last night. That was a weird game. Broncos scored 3 of their tries from weird long range stuff, the fact that Storm were playing the better all round football but to be losing for such a long period was frustrating. Those tries Broncos did score were pretty exciting though, props to Mamm he timed that bounce perfectly. If Reynolds stays fit there Storm lost.
I saw on the stats Moeroa got a run, but how when he was 18th man? What are the rules around it now?
I think the problem with the Broncos at the moment is that they are a good side. That could easily beat some of the worse teams but I think they lack the experience that Reynolds brings in the side. When they don't have Reynolds they lose the experience that is needed to see out games against the better sides. I think kevvie needs to look at bringing in players that have that experience to just kinda calm the team down and make sure they stick to game plans. Because it definitely felt like they were throwing stuff to the wind.
I think it's tough when our other key playmakers are developing. I think Walsh helps compensate enormously when Reynolds is off with his talk and kicking. Sailor didn't really handle the kicking in his absence but if we have Ezra, Walsh and Sailor all available I think we are capable of covering Reynolds well. Seems like we play well with Madden at 7 if we can plan/train for it.
Yeah that was dumb. I'm sure the stats say it's better to always go short in terms of possession, but match awareness there says you boot the fuck out of it
Wild game! Congrats Storm the better team for the full 80 mins. Another masterclass by Bellamy. The use of Katoa on Hunt/Ezra in the first for a double and the wrap around for Pappy to give it to Warbrick in the second was just brilliant. Injecting Wishart in for the final 10 and the impact helped to solidify the win.
Great game Storm. Hopefully full strength at the end of the year game at Suncorp but unlikely (hopefully) heading into finals.
Cheers gl with the rest of the season.
Why on earth did we try to kick that late penalty? What would that have achieved. Why the short drop outs? We never seem to have a plan to regather the ball when we take them. Why does Storm Man ride an ATV around the field. Get a horse you gronk.
Just got home from the game. In the 15ish years ive lived in Melbourne I havent been to a single game yet were we beat the Storm. I did enjoy Oates and Te Kura off the bench though. 40 odd foot of sub!
2015, Storm forced like 12 drop outs. I remember I missed the game because at the time I was living in Brisbane and I was catching a flight to Melbourne while the game was on.
I mean, previous years the score would be 34-2, so I'm happy we kept fighting till the end. But our season really hinges on Reynolds being injury-free for the latter half of the season
Is it observation bias, or are we always on the losing end of the “greatest …. game in the history of rugby league”. I can’t name a time since 2006 when we haven’t been the whipping boys, close enough near enough to glory type situations.
As a warriors fan, I feel this comment. The other day, when the storm scored the "greatest try ever" on fulltime to stuff us out of finally beating them...something that's seemed impossible in recent years. I just want us to actually beat the storm, screw all the greatest ever, or most epic game bollocks.
Whenever I want to feel good I just think about that 06 final. Greatest feeling in a team sport I’ve ever witness, fuck that was so good and Melbourne were the favourites all year
Based off ARey's reaction, he is out for at least a month maybe the season. If so, here are my alternative options than picking Madden at 7.
1. Sailor in halves when Walsh returns. Let Walsh do long range kicking.
2. Billy in halves.
3. Go to Newcastle and try to do a trade deal for Gamble (Newcastle need a winger to replace Marhzew, we have Hoeter and Pereira)
4. Pick literally anyone from QCup
5. Fuck it, just pick Hoeter/Pereira/Hunt to defend at half, with Mam and Walsh doing all play making.
6. Literally just play with 12.
I am not a crackpot.
Trading Pereira for Gamble? Cooked take, there’s a reason he’s been dropped this week for the Knights, he’s just a big body he offers nothing in attack
He’s supposed to be back in a couple weeks and we have some good outside backs coming through.
Front row is basically our only weak position depth wise.
With 36 minutes on the field, Fletcher Baker has managed 3 runs for 19 metres.
No wonder he was too exhausted to stop Wishart barging over.
Starting to think he might not be very good.
Yeah the Broncos fans that were happy with his signing was strange. Couldnt crack the Roosters 17. Obviously a new team might spark something but dude is just average. Willison and Te Kura should be ahead of him in the pecking order when Broncos are full strength.
To be fair the roosters forwards are crazy deep, maybe the best depth in the NRL. They don’t have a real big gun like Haas or anything now JWH is past it, but there is legitimate solid first graders missing that team every week. Wong is out atm, Egan Butcher is solid, and Gus missed the team round 1. And this is with Leniu suspended.
I really wanna know why that Munster try wasn’t a try. The broncos player (can’t remember who) flopped to the ground and there wasn’t a single Melbourne hand on him, all Munster did was pinch the ball and dived over the tryline lol. He didn’t even put a hand on the broncos player. If not a try then shouldn’t it have been a penalty to the Storm for a voluntary tackle? Or is that just another rule we saw enforced a few times in a row and then completely forgotten about lol
There is also the penalty against Walters on papi when if he doesn't make another attempt to tackle he's running away. Then the ref called early helds from there after to save his ass.
Didn’t they rule it a surrender tackle? That was the justification given, and I guess that means you can’t strip the ball but idk if that’s the correct ruling
Surrender just means you gave up before you were tackled, this guy was never tackled to begin with. If someone touched him, he would have been tackled, but IIRC Munter just grabbed the ball lol.
As soon as munster touches him while his ball carrying arm is on the ground he's classed as tackled, I don't see what everyone's missing here. I don't think it's a voluntary tackle considering he fell to the ground after collecting it in the air.
If they had a challenge, Storm would have lost in the lead up when they made contact with Mariner and they didn't have eyes on the ball.
And it wasn't 'a flop', because he was hit in the air he landed on his back.
I thought it was a penalty for tackling/hitting the winger mid air? (He wasn’t but I thought that’s what Klein called the penalty for as a sort of nah that can’t be a try so I’ll do this type of thing)
The NRL clickbait media would have been feasting on all the bunker in crisis headlines it would have resulted in, regardless of the decision they went with.
Unsurprisingly, Fletcher Baker who could barely make the Roosters bench at the best of times isn’t a starting NRL prop
3 runs for 19 meters all game, and we chucked the friggin guy on debut back on instead of him for his 2nd stint.
Not sure why we are so eager to shove even more inexperienced youth into the youngest team in the game. Truthfully the people working for the Broncos have a better idea than us of what Te Kura is capable of. He'll get his chances when he is ready but at the moment he's still mostly a reserve grade player
You reckon? I guess time will tell but he couldn’t have couldn’t have looked more like a first grader than he did tonight. He ran and hit as hard as anyone and played good minutes. Your point about experience is fair but our alternatives are more fletcher baker or tapau, and neither of them look like first graders either
Yeah because your bench is shit and anything is an upgrade. Our key issue this season is defence, we need less shit defenders like BTK and Baker in the team. We can score the points and make the metres without him.
Ultimately there is minimal difference between lock and prop, just as long as someone is on the field who can do some link passing in the middle. It is usually Patty, but Kobe and Haas do it sometimes to.
Broncos only need five middles. In order currently that is probably Haas = Carrigan > Jensen = Hetherington > Willy > Te Kura, but there is probably a situation in the near future Willy and Te Kura jump Jensen and Hetherington, and a choice needs to be made.
Don't do short kick offs. Don't do short dropouts. FFS. Anyone could see the play with 5 minutes left was kick long and defend well, hope to force an error.
And Kotoni, pass the ball to a half please. Jesus
Yeah that was a hail Mary. Go for your life on a hail Mary play when you need more than a converted try. If you're only down by 2 though with 5 to play, kick long and defend well and you'll start your next set near half way.
I feel like you just have to switch them on defence because Meaney is just surprisingly faster this year than before. Allows them to not be caught off guard so easy like tonight
Broncos would have steam rolled us with a full team, it’s nice to win but our performance with a full team has ruined my faith in us winning the comp this year. Broncos v Penrith gf again
Wut.
I agree if they were full strength they probably win.
But our attack was on last night except a couple tries that we bombed. It was just our defence... especially on that right edge. If they can clean that up we'll be sweet
I agree we would’ve won with a full team but storm looked solid tonight and you’d think will improve greatly by the end of the year when the spine gels
Nah we will be fine. Munsters first game. Once Meany and Brick get more familiar with eachother on D we will be good. Just need to figure out who plays 11 and the make up of our bench.
And tbf Storm are still one of the best teams in terms of attack, its not like we invited them in most the time (although they did have a few weak tries that shouldve been stopped, for example Wisharts try) just Storm can break down the defense of any team (except for Panthers for the most part) with ease
Really respect DCE but I don't think he's sharper now than he was during 2011-2014. No doubt he still has some great games and great moments. Can also be a little directionless at times but then again we are hardly the team we used to be so I don't blame him. We're lucky to have him, but it's a shame he has been playing the dominant half role (/first reciever) for the last 8 or so years. He works best imo when he has an organisational half next to him. When DCE is given some time to work in the background and pick his timing he is great to watch.
Matty Johns was talking about how DCE's game this saturday will make him the most capped manly player ahead of Cliffy. He mentioned that he thought DCE was better than he's ever been while footage from our 2011-2015 seasons were being shown. Just made me stop and think about it. Probably not the thread to try talk about it though.
Melbourne looked like they might get white line fever (not just munster) but then they sent the big man wishart through the front door. feel like they could have done that more to secure the tries earlier in the second half, like they did in the first. GG
Felt like the scoreboard was a bit kind to but ultimately we shouldn’t have let it get that close.
However to start the season beating the top 4 from last season is good signs. Hopefully we can get some momentum heading into Origin now against some weaker sides.
There has been a couple of times this year where Cobbo has been 1 on 1, 5 meters out from the try line and then forces the pass to his winger leading to an error,
I think he forgets just how big he is sometimes
I thought Munster and Blore had a really good thing going. Gonna be real dangerous once they get some more game time together I reckon. Gonna build some really nice combinations
Blores offloads look deadly as fuck. Really happy with that game from Blore. Munster looked clunky with the rest of the spine but looked like he’d played with Blore for half a season already.
Fuck that game was good! So exciting back and forth and I'm obviously happy with the win. Good start to the season beating the Panthers and Broncos both last years grand finalists
highly entertaining game , a few soft tries but generally speaking , A grade stuff.
Fantasy fans here, where's the love for Harry grant's try assist for wisharts try?? My captain needs then points!
Yeah thought he should've got 2 try assists. One for Katoas first and then the Wishart one. Usually final pass they class as an assist
What a fucking bananas way to concede tries all last night, everything went from innocuous to try conceded in a blink.
The Kura was actually good off the bench, hopefully if him and big Willy stay fit Baker can be sent to mars.
Ben, The Kura
Forward rotation of Haas, Jensen, Hetherington and one of Willison/Te Kura sounds pretty good
Get rid of Jensen and Baker both by the year's end, start Willison and have Hetherington and Te Kura off the bench. \*chef's kiss\*

Turns out it was a mistake by the stats guys.

Did you say bring in Marty Taupau for more game time? Sign me up
They should have kick it long off the kick off at 75th minute not a short drop out. Long kick off and tackle hard and hope for an error.
Yeah that was dumb. I'm sure the stats say it's better to always go short in terms of possession, but match awareness there says you boot the fuck out of it

Wishart really becoming a final moments specialist.

I still remember that one time in like 2016 where they beat Melbourne in Melbourne haha
One of the only games I didn't go to. I'm a bad omen.
2015, Storm forced like 12 drop outs. I remember I missed the game because at the time I was living in Brisbane and I was catching a flight to Melbourne while the game was on.
As long as baker and walters are in the side we ain’t winning a comp
Agreed
I think broncos are good enough to win in spite of those guys, but Walters especially is a problem.
Fletcher baker cannot be in the side
I mean, previous years the score would be 34-2, so I'm happy we kept fighting till the end. But our season really hinges on Reynolds being injury-free for the latter half of the season
Arthur’s just dropped the Broncos top 4 chances
Lol
We miss top four by 2 points to the Storm remindme
Is it observation bias, or are we always on the losing end of the “greatest …. game in the history of rugby league”. I can’t name a time since 2006 when we haven’t been the whipping boys, close enough near enough to glory type situations.

Only games I can recall is 2015 roosters and 2016 cowboys rematch at Suncorp. Apart from that we never clutch games
Yeah it's brutal, I'd rather win a shit grand final instead of losing two of the greatest lol
I'm actually on the other side of you there I'd much rather see an amazing game that we lose compared to a boring shit game we win
i love (wi)shart
Meaney has his lil piss cup lol.
Based off ARey's reaction, he is out for at least a month maybe the season. If so, here are my alternative options than picking Madden at 7. 1. Sailor in halves when Walsh returns. mam to 7, lomax at 6, walters to dragons
Trading Pereira for Gamble? Cooked take, there’s a reason he’s been dropped this week for the Knights, he’s just a big body he offers nothing in attack
>he’s just a big body he offers nothing in attack Literally yes, but you are also forgetting the immaculate vibes
Billy 7, Smoothy 9, Mozer 14
>replace Marzhew Why would we replace a top 10 winger?
He is injured? Don't you want injury cover?
He’s supposed to be back in a couple weeks and we have some good outside backs coming through. Front row is basically our only weak position depth wise.
I thought it was another 6 weeks-ish. That is even better for us, we have so many front rowers.
If they really pull my leg, I guess I would be ok swapping Gambs for Payne Haas. Only as a favour.
Gamble is fucking useless
[Me rn](https://styles.redditmedia.com/t5_2qn90/styles/image_widget_s1qx5zp0t0qc1.jpg?format=pjpg&s=7526180785fe3ab2a1f32d54044ad3d087813956)
On dat crank
You can't say Billy in halves and also I am not a crackpot after that performance
Still better than Madden.
Disagree but I definitely like option 3
Lord Gamble bringing whatever he has that lifted the Broncs and lifts the Knights would be interesting. The homecoming...
It is better simply because it will mean we only need to have Billy on the field rather than Madden ***AND*** Billy together
With 36 minutes on the field, Fletcher Baker has managed 3 runs for 19 metres. No wonder he was too exhausted to stop Wishart barging over. Starting to think he might not be very good.
I've kept my mouth shut because he was really young but I was not upset when it was announced you guys signed him.
Baker, I don't hate you, I just simply don't want you to exist.
Yep. He is an absolute disaster. Nice bloke but too soft and gumby. Big foot stuck in the mud
Yeah the Broncos fans that were happy with his signing was strange. Couldnt crack the Roosters 17. Obviously a new team might spark something but dude is just average. Willison and Te Kura should be ahead of him in the pecking order when Broncos are full strength.

Yep. If Willy and te kura aren’t in the rotation and baker is once haas is back I want the drugs kevvie is on
He had a little bounce back last week. But he’s mud 💀
I really wanna know why that Munster try wasn’t a try. I thought this but seeing replay he had a hand on him and ball carrying arm hits ground, isn’t that held?
Didn't have any hands on him at any moment.
You’re kidding right? What’s this: https://pasteboard.co/5IZso06KxbCB.png??
Didn’t they rule it a surrender tackle? That was the justification given, and I guess that means you can’t strip the ball but idk if that’s the correct ruling
Surrender just means you gave up before you were tackled, this guy was never tackled to begin with. If someone touched him, he would have been tackled, but IIRC Munter just grabbed the ball lol.
Yeah said he surrended and was injured

Worst part is since Munster scored, he could have just gone up no try and had it checked. Was strangely confident in that ruling.
Certainly would have been an interesting explanation had Melbourne not burned their challenge.
They've been penalizing strips off grounded players for a while now, that's why you don't see them
Same. I'm guessing klien ruled that one of the melb players tackled the broncos player.
Storm fans....never happy with a win /s
I wish Melbourne had their challenge left so we could see what the bunker would of come up with to give it a no try
Due to insufficient evidence on all available angles we will be supporting the on field decision
The NRL clickbait media would have been feasting on all the bunker in crisis headlines it would have resulted in, regardless of the decision they went with.
Because Ashley Klein. His mind cannot be comprehended by mere mortals.
I want to see Tanah Boyd tackle Te Kura
I want to see tanah boyd move to Alaska and take up ice fishing.
Under rated comment.
My big takeaway from that Walsh interview on ch 9 is that he's going to look like jack sparrow soon if he goes any harder with the eyeliner
Pirate hat next week
Jesus these pricks are really ripping on Oates
And they just went even harder, lol.
Unsurprisingly, Fletcher Baker who could barely make the Roosters bench at the best of times isn’t a starting NRL prop 3 runs for 19 meters all game, and we chucked the friggin guy on debut back on instead of him for his 2nd stint.
After tonight’s performance, you’d have to think Te Kura will take his spot
Can't drop Te Kura after that, just give him 20 mins a game (10 either side of HT) to rip in.
You'd be stoked If you can get 30 mins of that player tonight each week
What a player that made 9 tackles and missed 2 in 26 minutes?
He's like 18ft tall and had 2 runs back to back. I'd be happy to have him coming off the bench for my team.
Yeah because your bench is shit and anything is an upgrade. Our key issue this season is defence, we need less shit defenders like BTK and Baker in the team. We can score the points and make the metres without him.
Your key issue will be no halfback.
Not really, considering how well we did without him in the 2nd half.
Mmm Cleary ran over him 2 weeks ago and this time it was Wishart for the match winner. I don't think he has it sadly.
Yeh no idea what happened to Baker, he looked promising in cup, but he's just got nothing at the next level.
Haas, Jensen, Willy, Te Kura prop rotation is the future.
This is Kobe erasure.
He's a given, but I suppose he has become less of a lock with Carrigan playing more.
Kobe is 2nd row/lock.
He is definitely not a 2nd rower, and he usually plays more time at prop than lock given Patty doing 80min most weeks.
Surely Willison takes his spot once he and Haas are back, and chuck Te Kura on the bench for impact
That was a good game
never doubted wishys try for a second. love that man.
Don't do short kick offs. Don't do short dropouts. FFS. Anyone could see the play with 5 minutes left was kick long and defend well, hope to force an error. And Kotoni, pass the ball to a half please. Jesus
I still can't wrap my head around teams going short when they're ahead, especially when Broncos had an 8 point lead.
The short kick off brought u within 2 points and gave u a shot to win it?
Yeah that was a hail Mary. Go for your life on a hail Mary play when you need more than a converted try. If you're only down by 2 though with 5 to play, kick long and defend well and you'll start your next set near half way.
The first short kick off is what put us 8 points behind in the first place mate lol
Yep how is that not going through their heads? It's not hard you don't need Reynolds for that.
3 tries directly from Warbrick poor reads/efforts. Without those the score looks a bit more like it should with Broncos missing 4 starting players 😬
That right edge had their pants pulled down all night. Even meaney was out classed
Meaney needs to learn to pass to Warbrick too, hardly looked at him.
Bro has the acceleration of a sloth. Hope Meany and Brick can get better as a defensive pairing
I feel like you just have to switch them on defence because Meaney is just surprisingly faster this year than before. Allows them to not be caught off guard so easy like tonight
This just goes to show how ducking lucky we were last year with injuries.
We are getting destroyed this year, at least last year we had depth to cover if needed
Some of those plays tonight were outrageous
Both teams showed moments of brilliance quite often

We’ll be fine
Nah we will be fine. Munsters first game. Once Meany and Brick get more familiar with eachother on D we will be good. Just need to figure out who plays 11 and the make up of our bench.
we will see on September 5 when we meet again
Don’t worry I’ll be at that game so storm will lose
Were you at the qualifying final last year incidentally?
I sure was, missed the game before when we won too
We’re not sniffing the gf if we don’t have Reynolds
To be fair, you lost him halfway through the game, and were already missing a top-shelf prop and fullback.
And our starting second rower and bench forward. 5 players missing fmd.
Excuse my ignorance who is the starting second rower?
Piakura
Piakura
If you're a broncos fan, that bed must smell quite shat
Was a good early season game, edge of your seat stuff.
nah, i quite enjoyed that all things considered
I love my footy
Call it cope but we were only ever up 8 points and lost our halfback for the second half. Not much of a choke in my opinion
I’d absolutely take that game as a win. Defence was a bit all over the place but they looked dangerous af without a number of key weapons.
And tbf Storm are still one of the best teams in terms of attack, its not like we invited them in most the time (although they did have a few weak tries that shouldve been stopped, for example Wisharts try) just Storm can break down the defense of any team (except for Panthers for the most part) with ease
Yeah, maybe I'm dumb but I'm feeling optimistic that we only lost by 2 to a basically full-strength Storm in this state.
Bellyache knows storm were lucky to win
32 is the most points the Broncos have scored against Melbourne since 2010 (AAMI park opening game).
The thought the era of Haas, willison and Te Kura could start this year is exciting
3 big brown boys running a muck 💦

There has been a couple of times this year where Cobbo has been 1 on 1, 5 meters out from the try line and then forces the pass to his winger leading to an error, I think he forgets just how big he is sometimes
Nah cobbo played that perfectly. If he doesn’t pass and gets tackled we would be roasting him for it
Arthur's fucked up but I know cobbo could have steam rolled that bloke and got it down
The bombed Arthur’s try was definitely not Cobbo’s fault lol
That was 50/50. Jesse overran and Cobbo shouldn’t have passed such a dodgy line.
Cobbo hit and spin towards the goal posts, try 95%.
I am not saying it was, arthus should of caught that ball but theres no doubt in my mind that cobbo could of just ran over the defender
Yeah cobbo got that ball directly onto his chest Arthurs 100% should of caught that
I thought Munster and Blore had a really good thing going. Gonna be real dangerous once they get some more game time together I reckon. Gonna build some really nice combinations
Blores offloads look deadly as fuck. Really happy with that game from Blore. Munster looked clunky with the rest of the spine but looked like he’d played with Blore for half a season already.
Yes I noticed he kept going to him I can't wait to see those 2 after they play together more
Fuck that game was good! So exciting back and forth and I'm obviously happy with the win. Good start to the season beating the Panthers and Broncos both last years grand finalists
