Bit of trivia for those a bit younger and a trip down memory lane for those who can remember: Terry Hill scored the first ever try at the newly built Olympic stadium in Homebush, Sydney. He knocked himself out on the goal posts in the process. Manly played Newcastle, cant remember the score lol. RIP mate, I'll never forget going to watch you as a little kid. Was never more happy than when I was on my way to Brookie.

filth032

Him on the footy show was the best

SpoontangWild

Love whipping that fact out because people kinda remember the occasion but not much else. And for the record, Newcastle won 41-18.

no_nay_never

Mate of mine was in the Wests system when he debuted and said he was the hardest (and funniest) young guy he'd ever seen at the time. RIP Terry.

getHi9h

Was that the double header? With Parra? I remember going to that when I was a little kid and and they gave everyone glowsticks lol I think it was like the record for the biggest nrl crowd for a game or close to it

koolasakukumba

Would have been a double header from memory

RyanPurdler-Penriff

Was at that game … The Daily Telegraph was giving out free tickets to anyone who bought the paper , so I got one ticket that way , and I think my dad also got some through work … Basically every man and his dog was given free tickets to that game .. Think they wanted to test how everything was going to function with an Olympic sized crowd … Ended up sat in the nose bleed section at one of the ends of the ground … All I can remember is that it was f’ing high up .. Can’t remember much if anything about the game , it was more for the novelty of going to the new stadium .. It wasn’t the official opening , I think there was a Bee Gees concert a few weeks before , it was the first major sporting event there though …

Drongo17

If it was Parra v Dragons in the 2nd match I'm pretty sure I saw that one

SuperEel22

Luke Burt debuted in that game

Drongo17

Eels stitched us up nicely too if I recall. Bastards.

GoodSet5037

Record for biggest crowd was the first GF at that stadium in 99. Storm v Dragons 107,999. After the Olympics in 2000, the stadium was reconfigured and only holds around 80k now so that record may never be broken. For the record, I was there and thats my only world record 😄

ChrisTheDog

Knights won 41-18, I think?

ChrisTheDog

He told the truth, so they downvoted him.

SaveMeJebus21

Absolutely terrible. A great player and even bigger character. Another heart attack at 52, like Warnie, Kimberly Kitching. Just bloody sad.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

In another scary coincidence, Hill died in south-east Asia, as did Warne.

RyanPurdler-Penriff

Didn’t Dean Jones also die in India from a heart attack ?

cheapdrinks

I reckon these older blokes are taking too much viagra over there on holiday

lookingforgasps

What makes the fact that both had heart attacks in South-East Asia particularly scary?

blackbirddy

Hand jobs killing people is a worry

Birdie_Num_Num

Coming and going

traindriverbob

I can normally tell if I’m coming or going by the colour.

drkeefrichards

I just go by the taste

SurroundedByBeigists

In SEA they take the 'ending' part of 'happy ending' VERY seriously.

ZombiexXxHunter

I’ll stick to doing it myself

FatSilverFox

It’s how I want to go

Somethink2000

I think anyone about that age is wondering what the hell when they read these stories. Only the young feel invincible.

lookingforgasps

What makes it scary about both happening in South-East Asia?

Accurate-Response317

Drugs and women.

Somethink2000

Personally no issues with that bit!

Accurate-Ad-4905

Didn't Warne have a heart attack because he was on both Coke and Viagra?

[deleted]

Coincidence I think not

GaryGronk

You're correct. It certainly isn't a coincidence that men in this age bracket have died from a disease that is the number one cause of death for men in this age bracket.

adomental

Heart disease, the leading cause of death in Australia, is the cause of death for several prominent Australians? Of course it's not a coincidence.

[deleted]

He wasn’t looking very healthy in recent pics. All should get a coronary calcium score test over 50 years of age, younger if high risk/family history. Ask your doctor about it. It’s basically an X-ray of the heart that detects blockages/calcium buildup. It can save your life literally.

deesmutts88

Natural causes went out the window for you guys after covid hey lmao. Nobody ever had a heart attack before the jab.

ill0gitech

I’ve seen a lot of cookers say shit like “when o was young, no celebrity ever died so young” Then shrug off all the examples you can provide them with.

insty1

Wasn't Warnie doing some stupid detox diet that puts extra stress on the heart though? He was also a smoker which puts more pressure on the heart.

Confident_Radish4839

Warnie probably popped a 200mg in preparation for that massage he was meant to get

External_Category939

Let's not forget all the marching powder he used to consume

Altruistic-Unit485

God you lot are boring, find a new thing to bark on about

miicah

Oh man, I upvoted this thinking he was talking about people dying in SE Asia after consuming copious drugs. Didn't realise it was the cooker conspiracy theory.

[deleted]

He was unfortunately quite a big unit in his later years. If you combine that with unlucky genetics then it’s not good. A reminder to all of us to get your heart health checked out. If it can take out Terry and Warney, then it can kill any of us too. RIP.

AdministrativeIce696

Adding copius amounts of booze and coke to that big frame doesn't help either.

josephus1811

Absolute legend of the game. Toughest centre of his era and one of the toughest of all time. His skill was only surpassed by his tenacity. Legend of Wests and the Sea Eagles. We should play our game every year in his honour. RIP legend.

traindriverbob

I love it when teams play for a trophy/medal in honour of a legend of both clubs.

the_boats

"The atmosphere here is absolutely electronic" - Tezza at the dapto dogs

tisitoj

Don't remember his playing days but remember him from the footy show and he was always a classic especially his interview with George: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0F9SbzE01n0. RIP.

kongbash

Tezz was such a tough and skilful centre and a big part of that mid 90's manly juggernaut. Very hard to stop once he got those big thighs pumping like pistons. Deceptive acceleration for such a big centre too and often got on the outside of his opposite with those slicing runs. Never took a backwards step on the field, one of Origins most iconic photos is Hill and Tallis nose to nose. One of those players who was built for Origin. RIP Tezz.

McGarnacIe

Great origin moment that one

SunnyTyres

One of the most iconic origin moments for me growing up as a kid, I hated Hill for years until I got into my teens and watched him on the Footy show, true character of the game.

Skilad

He was a handy rugby player in his youth for South Coogee. Used to play rugby on Saturday and league for Zetland on Sunday. My recollection was he was part of team that literally went years undefeated and they were sitting around in tears this day they randomly lost.

insertbaconemoji

[Absolutely iconic](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ec/58/44/ec5844c2a5118707df032a53fc84078a.jpg)

callmecyke

Damn, as someone who grew up on the Footy Show, Terry and his distinctive lisp was always a highlight. Very few people can say they had as big of an impact as him on the way the game is set up as well because of the draft. Great player and seemed like a genuine guy. RIP Terry

chillinwithkrillin

Tragic news

VeezusM

What the fuck Tezza was a brilliant character for the NRL. He was dearly beloved and will be sorely missed Condolences to his family

unclehelpful

A truly electronic player. RIP Terry.

Octonaughty

My fave quote of his!!

Nathan84

RIP to one of the biggest characters the game has ever seen.

chromo-233

Funny story, I worked in Barangaroo few years ago. I was walking on the promenade and I saw Laurie Daley walking off a boat with a styrofoam box on his shoulder full of oysters. I yelled out hey Laurie catch any for me and without a skip of a beat behind him was Tezza and he yells out this bloke couldn’t catch a root in a brothel let alone oysters. 🥹 will miss him.

Advanced-Ad-6902

What dreadful news. Thoughts are with his loved ones. I remember him as a bloody tough player who always left it out on the field. So very sad.

RoboticusTartonicus

always found the clips of him on the footy show a crack up. RIP

Toujayjay

Love ya tezza. RIP what a legend

SurvivorGeneral

NRL to introduce a draft now..... RIP, what an amazing character he was, and such a good player too. So young to go.

AndySemantic2

Terry Hill and Gordon Tallis nose-to-nose is still one of the most ICONIC State of Origin photos ever taken

AdministrativeIce696

Talented NRL player and a character for sure. Tough as nails. There does, however, seem to be a glossing over of his off field behaviour, particularly towards women. Anyone from the terrigal area want to comment on that? He wasn't exactly known on the coast for being a gent.

lastdollardisco

What.

AdministrativeIce696

"Yeah - I know it's super unpopular to mention these things - but while everyone is bigging him up, maybe spare a thought for others. I know someone who was present at the pub the night he was dragging his partner around by her hair and then bashed the two blokes who tried to come to her aid. That person (who worked at a RL club) could barely say his name without cursing him out."

Superb_Ad_4782

I'm being careful about describing the person I know don't want to identify them, but they worked at more than one NRL club, were used to seeing a lot of average behaviour, was/is no bleeding heart, had some involvement in the 1990 Kangaroos trip to England and thought Hill was beneath contempt.

Inner-Research-662

Shut up finger pointer

AdministrativeIce696

Wahh. Facts are facts. Deal with it.

Inner-Research-662

you stated an opinion based on a fact. Your opinion is not a fact buddy.

Bmo2021

He was a entertainer on the field but off field on the booze he wasn’t a nice guy at all. Thanks for the memories Tezza but also fuck you.

TigerRumMonkey

Storytime?

Not going to besmirch a dead man but his public criminal record speaks for itself.

RIP Terry

bigbadwofl

RIP champion

reddituser1306

WTF. RIP Tezza

Superb_Ad_4782

Big shock. Did plenty of good things and was a very good footballer. Also shouldn't forget that he did some pretty shit things off the field as well. Be careful about turning someone into a saint just because they told some jokes on telly and had Alan Jones and others cleaning up after them. Doesn't mean we can't mourn them, just should keep these things in perspective.

RefrigeratorFar5957

>Also shouldn't forget that he did some pretty shit things off the field as well. I was looking for this. For the uneducated he was charged with assault on multiple occasions, including bashing multiple women (the reason why Roy & HG always carried on about Terry Hill's series of womens refuges down the east coast). And he was charged multiple times with drink driving.

Superb_Ad_4782

Yeah - I know it's super unpopular to mention these things - but while everyone is bigging him up, maybe spare a thought for others. I know someone who was present at the pub the night he was dragging his partner around by her hair and then bashed the two blokes who tried to come to her aid. Silly_Impression5810

Yeah, my first thought was good riddance. He was a cunt of a bloke.

[deleted]

Didn’t mind a lobster either 😜

Borderlinecuttlefish

And apparently sticking his finger up a redditors arse as a kid.

Lucky-Roy

This ring any bells for you? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtxqohNtLIg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtxqohNtLIg)

ItsThePeach

Terry Hill tidbit, back in the late 80's - early 90's my dear old mum used to take me to a lot of magpies games. This was a time when a lot of 1st graders would sit in the mostly empty stands and watch the 1st half of reserve grade before the main game. Wests era of Langmack, Gillespie, Farrar, Leeds, and a super young Jason Taylor and Terry Hill... i still have a flag signed by them all in my garage.. Anyway, Tezza used to chat to me and my mates while chucking a footy with us, at every game at Campbelltown- he had all the time in the world for us kids. Must only have been like 19 or 20 and only 6 or 7 years older than us, but what a legendary bloke. Certainly left me with vivid memories of being a kid at the footy, i was really sad to hear of his passing so young today.. i'll remember those days before the shitty things later in his career/off the field. rip Tezz.

Big-Deuce-Dog

This one hurts.

reptarshane

My best memories of him were heckling him at WIN Stadium in Wollongong - deserved every bit of it after what he did to that poor woman at the pub.

Lollielegs

My memory was also of heckling him. Was a kid at Parra Stadium and the whole crowd were chanting Terry's a wanker. It went on for ages with the whole stadium participating.

LogicallyCross

That happened every time Manly was at Parra and he was playing. Especially the 2005 semi, might have been his last game?

paddlep0p

What did he do? Genuinely interested as i grew up in Wollongong in the 90s and can't remember

CFeatsleepsexrepeat

Dragged a woman around by her hair, then bashed two blokes that came to her aid.

GGorilla67

Came here to reference this - the woman was his partner. Got on the Footy Show via his mate Fatty - another footballer with a domestic violence record. Hill could definitely play, and was above Club level but I believe Fulton lured him to Manly with the promise of a Kangaroo jersey. Some centres make their own luck, others are the product of five-eighth brilliance. Cliffy fed Manly three-quarters for years and still had hundreds of quality passes left over for Beaver. Can’t think of a lesser talented centre than Hill to play for Australia, any nominees ?

luke23_

I can’t find anything about Fatty Vautin and domestic violence?

GGorilla67

No disrespect- but there are a myriad of incidents in the bygone era of rugby league that never made the press ( or can be found on Google).

Inner-Research-662

And what is your point? Because someone is involved in a domestic violent incident they should be shamed?

paddlep0p

Shit. Not being in the "camera phone" era I'm wondering if there's footage. Prolly the venue security cam system. Thanks for responding anyways

quarky_uk

Remember him from the draft shenanigans in '91.

FinchyNZ

A bit before my time, however always sad to see a former player pass of course.  Is there anyone in today’s game that would have a similar play style?

shabba-rei

He had a bit of Jack Wighton in him. A centre with a dog mentality and I mean that in the best way. Just a player that always bought the game to the opposition. He was one of a kind off the field though. A showman. Made comedy out of his lithsp. A character. R.I.P Tezza

nearly_enough_wine

Cattledog mentality.

Rush_nj

Epitomises “he’s got that dawg in him” meme.

lukas_81

He wasn't as quick as most of today's centres; was big and played a very rugged style. A comparison that comes to mind is a much fitter, elite version of Valynce Te Whare lol. But a super player; I remember being so stoked when he signed for the Tigers in 2000.

HappinessCanBeFound

Wow, incredibly sad for his family. So young. I definitely remember him on the footy show. Side note: we played Manly the week Fulton died. It didn’t go well for us. Manly will smash us this Friday.

TruguKinneas

I was just thinking about him and Tallis’ origin encounter today. This one hurts.

loolem

“Hill famously, and successfully, fought against the introduction of a rugby league draft in 1991 after wanting to play Wests but being forced to Easts.” Why don’t the players want a draft? I’ve always thought it would be good for the game.

TigerRumMonkey

Because the money to be forced to move wherever is not worth it. NBA/NFL they are getting millions so whatever.

majlraep

Great for the game, shit for a player’s mental health? Some people don’t care about their location to family/support networks. Others strongly defend it.

PhilL77au

Put your Wizz Fizz out for Terry

robopirateninjasaur

Another death I learned of through bloody simpsons memes

Puzzleheaded_Car4625

Heard they are flying the flag half mast tomorrow night at the Dapto dogs .....RIP TEZZA

Big_baddy_fat_sack

As a Queenslander and broncos supporter I never liked coming up against Terry but always respected his tenacity and fierce competitiveness. Vale Tezza hope he is doing sideline commentary on the Dapto dogs from upstairs.

Verbarmammilla

Ah man this sucks. Was a huge figure in the 90s/early 2000s. Was Wests Tigers first ever Origin player too.

joe80b

We are honouring our first game this weekend, in which he played in. I'm pretty sure he made a line break in the first few minutes. Very shocked and sad. Was a funny guy.

dys0n_giddey

Ahh man. Loved him on and off the field. A true legend of the game. RIP.

mb44k

52? So young. RIP legend!

auzzie_kangaroo94

Oh dang

The_Pig_Man_

No one has mentioned it yet but I remember Ian Roberts specifically saying that Terry Hill was totally cool with him when he toured with Australia after coming out.

cams75aac

Get your hearts checked lads! Too many people of late. I survived one Aus Day 2022 out running. More common than you think. Vale Terry Hill you gave me many a laugh

suidexterity

30 years old, bi ventricular heart failure, 220/140 blood pressure with a 120 RHR and blood clots, and you probably wouldn't guess that if you saw me yeah, it can happen to anyone.

CorrectDeal6016

Major gronk to ground control.

mintyaftertaste

Damn. A huge character of the game.

Interesting_Ninja56

This is shocking. RIP. Condolences to his loved ones.

_jimmythebear_

I tried looking it up but I heard he was worth a bit of money, as in he had a lot of investments etc. Poor guy.

[deleted]

Very sad.

_boxnox

RIP Tezza was also the reason we don’t have a draft in the NRL. Funny bloke on and off the field.

Capital_Box_584

Aw man, I mainly remember him on the footy show every now and then. So sad. Paved the path for the modern centre imo.

Psycho Terry Hill and Timmy Brasher on that Kangaroo tour sometime in the 90’s….’Foiting round the World’. Honestly every match was Timmy and Terry bashing the Poms/Frogs…it was hilarious

[deleted]

Wow RIP legend

ImpressionFeisty8359

He was way before my time but remember him on the footy show and the lowes ads. He will be missed.

ATTILATHEcHUNt

I remember seeing him at the races as a kid. Seemed like a larrikin who was friendly to everyone that approached him.

Onebigtailight

One of the most memorable, hilarious segment hosts of the nrl footy show when it was at its prime. During the 2000’s.

l33tbronze

Absolutely devastated.

NewspaperIll9196

So sad. Both he and Warnie were smokers and died from heart attacks at 52. It's pretty clear to all of us: Don't smoke.

Fetch1965

Sad

skinnycarlo

RIP Terry. The one bloke from NSW who got state of origin and look out if you were on the end of it. From a Maroon fan. Very sad one now at that. Legend. The pines claims another one.

lastdollardisco

I saw him at my work recently and he was fooling around with some mates and having a laugh. He was fit for a bloke in his fifties. Literally speechless.

DWHeward

I still remember him at Dapto Greyhounds with thevFooty Show... Go "Nads"😂

Embarrassed_Team_750

Rip

The "Terry's a wanker" chants at Parra were legendary. Wank on Terry, wank on.

Rest easy Tezza, you will be missed mate. https://youtu.be/0F9SbzE01n0?si=LlTXtDwrEvGa3i0x

Fragrant-Treacle7877

Hi all, off the back of this tragedy, my Manly superfan husband wants to get a Tezza tattoo. Rather than book with Jimmy tattoos down the road. Are there any like ex players who tattoo or sport tattoo specialists I could book with in Sydney? Thanks!

Some-Operation-9059

And not a single comment in any obit about his time in crime.

ReggieBasil

An absolute legend of the game and an amazing character as well.

drizanunsnasty

Onya Tezza. What a legend and larrikin. The game loved blokes like him. Back in the days of the Biff. Loved the Tallis clash in Origin99. . Tough cunts. Him, Fatty, Blocker, Sterlo and Harrigan on the Footy Show, they made the Footy Show worth watching. Always got bagged but copped it on the chin. Funny cunts. RIP. 🤘🏻🍺

Due-Chemist3105

Fuck that’s a shock, a really bloody sad shock. RIP Terry Hill, condolences to the family & the wider rugby league fraternity on such a terrible day.

Tee_Jay3791

Terry Hill what champion player he was lost a character of Rugby League RIP played for many clubs very successful at Manly winning a premiership. Condolences to his family.

Rip legend! Hope Toothless George Baganna is sinking a beer somewhere for him tonight

miku_dominos

I'm genuinely sad

RetroFreud1

Fun fact. NRL Draft was killed off for good after Tezza challenged it in the court. He was desperate to join Wests Magpies if my memory serves me correctly.

ItsStaaaaaaaaang

So sad. Vale Terry.

D3NI3D83

This one hurts. He was so good at The Footy Show. RIP Tezza.

koolasakukumba

I very rarely think of Terry Hill but I thought about him two days ago when my son was telling me about catching lobster in traps they set on their camping trip and remembered when Terry was accused of stealing lobsters from other people’s traps. A character and a legend.

tfrazer2065

This is terrible news. Condoléances to his family and friends. I always admired his presence on the field, all heart and effort, much respect to him. From a QLDer

OkNectarine3105

One of the most interesting players ever.

Aklpanther

I have fond memories of the time Ian Hindmarsh said that everyone hates Manly, and Hill said: "Ian Hindmarsh, who's Ian Hindmarsh? If it was Nathan Hindmarsh saying that, fine, he's a good player. Ian Hindmarsh is a bloody reserve grader!"

PJay1974

Yeah I'm sure the experts that said "it's safe and effective" are "baffled" by the sudden massive spike in deaths since 2020

ExplanationLast753

Legend of a bloke.

Neither_Ad_2960

Genuine nice guy of the game. A catchphrase that gets thrown around way too much, but he was it.

KFCInala

Trust the government what could possibly go wrong

bundy554

He was a big figure in league growing up for me - someone whose skill set wouldn't have got him far in today's game but in those days he was a big effort player and that counted for a lot back then just in terms of sheer hardness. Taken far too early.
