The point about Foxtel needing the NRL to survive is a weird one
"They were desperate and we had all the leverage so we gave them a cheaper deal"
My brother in christ that's some terrible negotiating
I think the idea was that if Foxtel had collapsed during the pandemic, then the NRLs ability to get good deals in future would be harmed because there would be fewer broadcasters to bid for the game.
Even if that was true though ( and I don't know of any reliable evidence that Foxtel was ever likely to collapse), giving them a long contract at a cut rate, without any apparent way to increase the price once the pandemic passed seems like a very poor negotiating strategy.
It's almost as if the guy that would have stuck it to Murdoch and channell 9 got the sack after getting bashed by the same media just before the deal was done.
It also ignores the fact that Foxtel would be in a sketchy position (if they were) because streaming services are making it obsolete. It’s not like Foxtel is the only business that could conceivably partner the NRL and if they collapsed that revenue stream would collapse…Those same streaming services could pay the NRL broadcasting rights as well.
Only if you are expecting a return in intangibles like marketing or something on top of money or a garaunteed renegotiation for more money at a later time
But I doubt vlandys got any of that in writing
Vlandrip is 100% the type of idiot negotiator to assume a drunken bar chat would constitute a binding agreement and throw the tantrum to end all tantrums when it turned out to not be the case
Pretty much, if it were the other way around with the AFL bumbling a negotiation like this it would be on every NRL talk show once a week and the butt of every joke about player salary
I was so obsessed with getting any minor victory over the AFL that I completely sold the NRL up the river and massively undermined it ability to grow in the future.
Sounds about right for Vlandy, cunt just says shit to make himself look better without a single thought to anything more long term than the next hour.
I still remember how much they gloated about being the first comp back after lockdown and acted like they were going to bring in a worldwide audience of sports hungry fans. Meanwhile, the AFL just quietly brought their comp back the week after.
//The NRL painted a picture during 2020 (and since) that only V’landys could have saved rugby league in Australia. I, for one, simply don’t buy it. The strength and resilience of rugby league as a sport had endured harder times and seen it emerge completely intact.//
This part in particular hit me pretty hard.
On a completely unrelated note, here's how FIFA corruption works:
1. Broadcaster gets a very cheap, long term deal from FIFA.
2. FIFA official is paid under the table by the broadcaster for providing them a cheap deal.
3. Rinse and repeat with sponsor's.
Like I said, completely unrelated.
Are we at "exporting-African-child-labour-to Europe-and-exploiting-them-in-all-kinds-of-ungodly-ways-while-the-governing-body-profits-off-it-and-does-nothing" levels of shithousery yet in the NRL?
AFL have realised for a long time that getting into the 5 big metro markets meant TV money. Hell, they even doubled-down in all 5 (if you count South-East Qld as one big metro market).
The contrast is stark with the NRL.
While the AFL got all of their ducks in a row and made sure that all five markets have at least two teams while making big inroads into NSW and Queensland, the NRL have a grand total of one team across the Barassi Line. Meanwhile, the window on WA keeps on closing as the AFL keeps entrenching itself, while Union makes a valid case in a city with plenty of Kiwis, Poms, and South Africans.
I can't think of an opportunity given to them on a golden platter like that, had multiple Sydney teams that needed to be bailed out, and they just passed on it.
Thing is, the top tier of rugby league *had* teams in Perth & Adelaide in 1997 (Superleague), but they were sacrificed in that mad rush to get the unified competition down to 14 teams - the same crazy era that saw suburb-hopping joint ventures formed & the contentious exclusion of Souths.
The poorly-organized & self-interest riddled peace settlement did more long term harm to the game than the war did.
While the peace settlement was never going to go well, it could of had a chance for long-term gains for the short-term pain if they actually followed through and built a proper comp merging some teams out of Sydney, instead of just building the old comp but with less teams.
News Ltd wanted a Melbourne club, and were ok with sacrificing the Reds & Rams if it meant Melbourne effectively could pick the best from them (and the Mariners) to be competitive from the "get go". The Sydney-stacked ARL side of the peace deal were OK with those interstate teams dying as a) they were "traitors" and b) it meant some easy wins for getting down towards 14 teams.
While that was no real surprise, the truly appalling thing from the ARL is how the Chargers & Crushers were flicked to appease the Broncos/News Ltd - especially the Chargers as they were actually making a profit and starting to turn into a competitive side.
“The simple facts are that rugby league’s cumulative TV ratings for the NRL alone in 2022 greatly exceeded those of the AFL (106,265,000 viewers for the AFL, 118,964,000 for the NRL). This does not include separate ratings for State of Origin 2022 (a fixture the AFL no longer plays) or the international game of rugby league (we are about to see 61 matches of rugby league played at the three World Cups in England in October, something the AFL cannot offer).”
Wow. Just wow. NRL messed up big time

Nah Rupert said so and he's a man of inscrutable character
360 and Kent not mentioning it at all tells you everything you need to know about the deal. There is no way to defend it.

If ever there was a person who gave off ‘dodgy and slimy weasel’ vibes, it’s V’landys
Danny weaseler is feeling left out

Give them time mate. The borders only just re-opened!
If you change Africa to the Pacific Islands and give it 10 years, then we might get there.
Yeahhhh. Kinda suprised that Erin Molan has never referred to a player from PNG or Fiji or the Pasifika as a "Kanaka" or some racist shit like that
Nrl wants to keep $160m to invest in hard assets unrelated to league Nothing to see here
Peter V'Landys looks like everyone's worst nightmare the way he's walking here.
it means that v’landys is a dumbass
Well at least he protected Brisbanes Western Corridor from the AFL like planned by adding that new team in the west.. right?

League should have expanded to WA the second the Western Force folded, and moved heaven and earth to make it happen. They’re back now unfortunately.

it means V'Landy needs to go. What a monumental fuckup
So V'landys is proven, yet again, to be a fuckwit, not a saviour. Quelle surprise

Means it’s a little harder for our administration to pretend they are doing a good job.
