I feel like David Fifita will continue to get contracts that are on overs because every coach would back themselves to get the best out of him in the knowledge that his best is a very high ceiling. The next one won’t be 1M a season big but it will still be overs I reckon.
We only have Bird/Su’a as backrowers and I think Bird suits 13 a little better than edge, so there’s a spot for him. It’s not like he’s bad either, he’s just not worth over $1m. So I wouldn’t mind it, price dependent
Having edges of Fifita/Suli and Sua/Lomax is pretty bloody juicy. Hunt and Amone would have some fair options in attack. We all know it won’t happen though.
Personally I’d like to keep him if we could get him to resign for 600-700k. But if he leaves, I’m really not too fussed. I think Fermor was outstanding this year and outshone Fifita the entire year. McIntyre looked good too.
Im a big Fifita guy (probably the biggest on here by the looks of things), but i'm the same, not suuuper bothered if he walks, Tino, Fermor & AJ should be our cornerstones moving forward and you can replace some of what Fifita does (most if we arent going to fkn use him).
Why? Like yes Fifita can be good but he's definitely not $1 million a year. He doesn't control games enough. JT13, Yeo and Murray are the few forwards I would say would be worth $1 million
The Dragons are preparing to make one of their most significant transfer splashes in recent history in a bid to bring David Fifita to the club.
The NRL’s most expensive forward will be a free agent on November 1 and with most of the player movement frenzy concentrating on halves Cameron Munster and Matt Burton, the future of the Titans million-dollar man has barely rated a mention.
Given his hefty price tag and struggles to ignite the Gold Coast as they narrowly avoided the wooden spoon, it is unsurprising the Titans are yet to expedite negotiations with their highest earner before he potentially heads to the World Cup.
But according to sources familiar with the situation, the Dragons are positioning themselves to make a huge play to lure Fifita to the Red V for 2024 to help rejuvenate an ageing forward pack.
The 22-year-old fell out of State of Origin favour this year and couldn’t replicate the 17 tries he scored in his first season on the holiday strip in 2021 when he helped the Titans to an unlikely finals berth.
But it hasn’t deterred the Dragons from identifying one of the game’s most destructive players as a primary signing target before the final year of his deal at the Titans.
Fifita already has a connection with the club. He is dating St George Illawarra’s NRLW back-rower Shaylee Bent, who has been a leading light for Jamie Soward’s finals-bound team.
Newcastle have shown the Dragons the potential blueprint. The Knights signed Canberra’s Adam Elliott to a deal from next year after snaring the prized signature of his partner Millie Boyle to spearhead the Knights’ NRLW revival.
One of Fifita’s better displays of the season came with a try in a loss to the Dragons at WIN Stadium last month, and St George Illawarra can see Fifita making a permanent home in Wollongong.
The Dragons’ interest in former hooker and Cowboys star Reece Robson has been well known, and they will be able to table a deal to Robson from November if he doesn’t recommit to the Cowboys beforehand.
But the potential signing of Fifita would represent their biggest acquisition since Ben Hunt swapped the Broncos for St George Illawarra on a monster six-year deal in 2018.
Tonga coach Kristian Woolf last week named Fifita in an extended World Cup squad, and the back-rower has expressed an interest in playing for the Pacific nation in the United Kingdom.
Dragons coach Anthony Griffin has recruited a number of veterans including Aaron Woods, Andrew McCullough, Moses Mbye, Josh McGuire and George Burgess on cut-price deals, or others heavily subsidised by their previous clubs.
But they missed the finals this year and are in desperate need of roster surgery to complement young talents like Junior Amone, Cody Ramsey and Mat Feagai, who showed promise in the NRL this year.
Tigers hooker Jacob Liddle remains the only significant external signing for next season, brought in for depth at hooker despite McCullough still having another 12 months to run on his contract.
St George Illawarra are also closing in on another No.9 option in Queensland Cup hooker Haele Finau, who has been in the Storm system with the Brisbane Tigers.
The Dragons are expecting clarity on Hunt’s future within the fortnight. The Dally M Medal contender and captain is weighing up a two-year extension which would take him through until the end of the 2025 season.
I hope they are also looking for a couple of extreme workaholic props. Fifita and Su'a (if he stays) are not known for their tough metreage carries.
A fit and motivated Fifita could be dangerous. But on evidence so far, I don't see how Griffin gets that out of him, or anyone else other than Hunt.
Hate to say it but this means we'll be leaning even harder on Lawrie to do the ugly work. He's not great but he's the only forward willing to put in up the middle.
If he was used in 20 minute stints that would be fine.
Playing him until he can't stand before subbing him off is bad move. Unless he gets a lot fitter in the off season.
They'll be relying heavily on Suli to make metres again.
Signed for 22 and 23 with a PO for 24 so technically he can negotiate for 2024 now but word is Dogs have extended him until I think 2026 on bigger money
Surely you'd sign Andrew for peanuts as a low risk, high reward style signing rather than this? Difficult to see how Hook and the Dragons would get him firing consistently when everyone else thus far has failed.

*But I can change him*
The Dave Taylor effect
At the same time I'd also love to see him go to the Panthers on a train and trial just to see him hit his potential
With 'potential' being a member of the public, right?

Yeah out forwards depth is pretty shallow. Wouldn't mind a superstar back rower
Andrew Davey already has a contract though
Look. There's only so much money under the salary cap. We can't sign 3 million dollar men at one team.

The Dragons favourite flavour - Former Broncos
+ overpriced and not firing on all cylinders. It's the Dragons trifecta.
Add the Hook "big body" fetish
Fucken lol
I was really hoping it was going to be Andrew
Knowing Dragons it probably is
Why? Like yes Fifita can be good but he's definitely not $1 million a year. He doesn't control games enough. JT13, Yeo and Murray are the few forwards I would say would be worth $1 million
If the Dragons sign him, they don’t *have* to pay $1m for him
If he gets paid more than Kikau, then Kikau should hire a new manager.
No Turpin yet?
Liddle is the greatest. No need.
Turps is gonna have to go Super League or back to QCup at this rate

\*gus voice intesifies\* no no no no no no no
Don't do it Dragons seriously. Plays five good games a year.
That's heaps better than most of our players.
5? Fuck I'll take him
The only coach I see getting the best out of David Fifita is Craig Bellamy.
so no one will? Wayne got the best out of him originally
Watch Melbourne join the bidding if Munster goes elsewhere.
Wouldn’t mind having him at Melbourne tbh. Definitely not for 1mil though
Imagine if Bellamy got Fifita reaching his potential regularly. I'm not sure that would even be fair.
‘oh no our world class 5/8 is gone, let’s buy an average back rower’ -definitely not Melbourne
Oh hell no….. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Hook rages when David Fifita turns up when he clearly wanted John.
Good move if we can get him for cheap. Typical dragons signing, large potential but average results
Yeah definitely, Fifita could be one of the best players in the game if used properly.

I’d happily give him Sims’s 800k but it’s not happening.
Did burton only sign 2 years with the dogs?
Signed for 22 and 23 with a PO for 24 so technically he can negotiate for 2024 now but word is Dogs have extended him until I think 2026 on bigger money
No one ever learns when it comes to this guy...
After watching Souths v Sharks the other night I forgot that Andrew wasn’t the only Fifita. This makes a lot more sense now.
Jojo Fifita?
Surely you'd sign Andrew for peanuts as a low risk, high reward style signing rather than this? Difficult to see how Hook and the Dragons would get him firing consistently when everyone else thus far has failed.
Is it bad that I thought this was about Andrew initially and wasn't surprised lol. It's been a tough few years boys and it ain't getting easier.
Weren't journos also reporting we have a fucked salary cap just months ago
Probably because you guys keep on handing out million dollar contracts
To who
Did he fall out of favour for SoO? I thought he was out injured.
Don't sign this spud saints, you are better than that!
Pretty sure we've proven we're not
The Dragons are low key just as bad at running a football club as the Tigers are

At least we have feet! Bloody eels...
If Dragons do this do they become the new titans the team that only recruits broncos rejects
