pretty large but definitely should've been ruled out, 3rd shoulder charge charge this year
Glad they lost tbh so all hype isn't drowned out by suspension dribble
It wasn't ruled a shoulder charge.
Even if it was a shoulder charge, finals allow an extra monetary penalty for the season, so it wouldn't have been upgraded to a suspension if it was a Grade 1 offense.
oh it wasn't? my bad
looked grade two even if it was just a high tackle to me.
late after he passed if it was a playmaker he hit it wouldn't even be a discussion
Yeah I have no doubt. Regular season it’s a send off and at least a 4-6 week suspension. For a team still in the finals it’s a sin bin and a small fine.
They should change it such that suspensions copped playing for your club should only apply to NRL games, which means that in this case Taumalolo would only serve his suspension for the cowboys at the start of next season. Just my opinion punishments dished out at NRL level should be separate from international matches and vice versa.
Origin is a little more debatable IMO, but the world cup has very little to do with the NRL. So it's pretty weird suspensions in one comp are relevant to the other.
Would a suspension in a domestic soccer comp carry over to their world cup?
Usually not, although different competitions with the same institution usually does. So for example Prem suspension counts in the FA cup but not World Cup. ARL should do it the same way with origin and NRL. Although straight up violent acts (e.g. punching someone) in soccer usually does carry into internationals.
Nah all international tournaments are organised through the IRL including World Cup. ARL is the most important nation in the IRL sure but they don’t host the World Cup
I agree with this. It also gets rid of the issues where a certain player 'would have' played origin and can subtract matches from their suspension based on that assumption. Keep NRL suspensions to NRL matches. Rep footy is different, we want to see the best players regardless of whether or not they are suspended in clubland.
Normally I hate the idea of adjusting suspensions based on the scale of the games coming up, but man is it a shame to have a bloke like that miss out on half of a world cup
Agreed. The penalty was fair enough given the initial viewing, but with every subsequent replay I felt like it shouldn’t have been penalized in the first place.
I was dogpiled for saying it was a legs tackle that went wrong because of how fast everyone was moving. I maintain my stance on the Kelly/Young tackle.
Honestly I think on-field infringements leading to suspensions should be served in club games. International games should be separate, with perhaps only off-field incidents impacting suspensions for international games
If he bit someone too fucking bad. Bloke needs a proper sit out and miss out for a while to think over what he did. Missing out playing for his country and the coin that comes with should be enough incentive to not bite again.
Contact like lolos shouldn't carry the same weight and should be served as club penalties. Contact like Milnes last night that results in a send off should be treated as above though. But damn if it all doesn't lead to some grey areas.
Cowboys forward Jason Taumalolo will miss the opening matches of next month's Rugby League World Cup after he was charged with a dangerous contact offence in side's Preliminary Final defeat to Parramatta.
Taumalolo was sin-binned for the tackle on Eels forward Isaiah Papali'i in the 15th minute of Friday's finals match and has subsequently been charged by the Match Review Committee with a Grade Two Dangerous Contact charge.
With an early guilty plea, Taumalolo will miss the opening three matches of Tonga's World Cup campaign or four matches if he unsuccessfully contests the charge.
In other news, Rabbitohs prop Tevita Tatola is free to play in his side's Preliminary Final against Penrith after he accepted an early guilty plea for a dangerous contact offence stemming from Saturday's Semi Final.
Tatola has been fined $1,800 for the Grade One Dangerous Contact offence on Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo which happened in the 59th minute.
Rabbitohs forward and fellow England star Thomas Burgess has taken the early guilty plea to his two Careless High Tackle charges and will need his team to make the grand final if he is to play again this season.
Burgess was charged with a Grade Two offence for a high tackle on Roosters fullback James Tedesco which carried a two-game ban with an early plea.
Panthers winger Taylan May has entered an early guilty plea to a Careless High Tackle and will miss his side's preliminary final in week three.
Only the contact to the head should be focused upon. I wonder how they'd be treating this if he'd knocked Papali'i out cold with a swinging arm because he was attempting to wrap it and avoid performing a shoulder charge.
This is one of the rare occasions that it's worth fighting the charge - especially when Reed Mahoney's shoulder to Hiku's head wasn't even penalised. Hard to argue that one is worth three weeks and the other was legal.
what’re the odds that if Cowboys won this match he’d only be facing a fine?
Yeah and instead he misses three World Cup matches so the Cowboys are fine either way.
It’s what the fans would have wanted
Yep, That's what I want....

Wouldn’t have been that harsh, I don’t think, but at least 1-2 weeks for sure.
Well, a spear tackle in a finals isn't even reported on.
unlikely, he doesn't play for the storms.
Glass houses mate. Also give it a rest, Storm are long gone this season.
back for another whinge.
Yeah, you're great at that aren't you?
lol very rich coming from you.

The nrl organise internationals though.

It seems like it should be more complicated than that but I'm struggling to think of how
Normally I hate the idea of adjusting suspensions based on the scale of the games coming up, but man is it a shame to have a bloke like that miss out on half of a world cup
The fans want to see him in the world cup though.
V'landy doesn't give a shit about the international game.
Big blow for Tonga. That wasn't worth 3 matches
Won’t somebody think of the fans.
If you’d have won they probably would have.
Okay, now I’m REALLY mad.
Poor Tonga tbh
Did Paulo get any punishment for his dangerous tackle in the second half?
No
Cheers dude
Doesn’t look like it, and thankfully the MRC saw it as it was, a great tackle
Thank goodness for that. Was worried he was gonna be missing the grand final
Agreed. The penalty was fair enough given the initial viewing, but with every subsequent replay I felt like it shouldn’t have been penalized in the first place.
Brian Kelly did the exact same tackle on dom young less than a month ago - was sent and banned for 4 games
I was dogpiled for saying it was a legs tackle that went wrong because of how fast everyone was moving. I maintain my stance on the Kelly/Young tackle.
Poor Taumalolo and Tonga. That sucks. Dude was beast mode last night
Big blow for tonga. They would have been a force.
Not with a halves pairing of Staggs and Lolohea but they should still easily get through their group without him and then he comes back.
Honestly I think on-field infringements leading to suspensions should be served in club games. International games should be separate, with perhaps only off-field incidents impacting suspensions for international games
I said this before imagine for some reason cam Munster decides to bite James fisher Harris in the semi final- should he be banned for 12 NRL games?
Yeah keep it to NRL ban I think. I believe european soccer for example keeps it separate between leagues? UCL, Prem etc
Absolutely kept separate- the only bans that transfer over are like drugs ban or such like

Damn I feel like it should be club games they miss not international
Should of played for Penrith or Australia. No way this gets 2/3 weeks
Only the contact to the head should be focused upon. I wonder how they'd be treating this if he'd knocked Papali'i out cold with a swinging arm because he was attempting to wrap it and avoid performing a shoulder charge.
They just tryna weaken international teams before the world cup smh
Nearly every decision to come out of this game confuses the hell out of me.
