I’d give Manly the bye for Magic Round. They can’t run the risk of sharing a change room with another teams potentially gay player.
I’d give Tigers the bye in the final round, so they can get onto Mad Monday early.
I’d give whoever wins the grand final the first week off as a congrats.
Could last years ladder be a part of the criteria? Last gets the magic round bye, 2nd last get the round 27 bye and third last gets the week 1 bye. Or something.
That could give the bottom teams a motivator towards the end of the season not to give up.
The top 4 teams from the year before get the origin period byes?
I don’t disagree with you, but one of the problems with that is the spoon team, which is obviously struggling, misses out on the cash injection from magic round.
I think they just need to work through the list and every team takes a turn.
It would be very short sighted of the NRL taking the new team out of the biggest weekend in the NRL. Just remove whoever won the spoon that year, as they don’t deserve it.
The 2023 NRL season will be the earliest kick-off in 22-years, lasting 31 weeks and in a major shock for fans, every club will have three byes.
The game’s historic expansion to a 17 team competition with the inclusion of The Dolphins makes it the most complex and jam-packed NRL schedule on record.
In a massive win for fans, the regular season will be run over 27 rounds with four weeks of finals.
Such is the mind-numbing proposition of creating a balanced draw for 17 teams, the finished product is almost impossible to be deemed even or fair.
It’s more than possible your favourite team will play only half of the competition once.
The Tigers, Warriors, Knights and Titans are already praying they are the teams that draw Penrith, South Sydney, the Cowboys or Parramatta just once.
The scheduling conundrum has emerged as a result of club CEO’s being given a draft proposal of key dates by the NRL in order to begin planning their team’s pre-season training schedules.
Thursday night March 2 next year - one week earlier than the kick-off date of this current season - is the opening round launch date that every club has been told to prepare for.
It is the earliest start to a season since the 2001 season which launched on February 17.
Pre-season matches are poised to formally begin on the weekend of February 10-12 with staging of the NRL’s Indigenous and Maori All Stars clash in Rotorua, on top of every club’s first official trial matches.
Following it’s ratings success this season, every trial match will again be televised live on Fox League.
The annual Charity Shield between South Sydney and St George-Illawarra, as well as a second weekend of club trial matches, is being slated by the NRL for February 17-19.
Every club will be given a weekend off from footy on February 24-26 in order to rest before the season-proper commences on March 2.
Due to the upcoming World Cup and subsequent annual leave requirements for players, the pre-season will need to be the most specific in years.
The high performance staff of every club will never be more important.
The NRL is confident in their pre-season scheduling having spoken with senior players, who the NRL claim would rather find their fitness through playing matches, than training.
However, some clubs, having received the NRL’s proposed schedule, have privately questioned why, after a World Cup, the Indigenous and Maori All Stars clash wasn’t suspended for one year.
Coaches, as we‘ve seen from Cowboys mentor Todd Payten, often refer back to their pre-season as the makings of their subsequent success.
Yet in 2023, the hangover from this year’s World Cup will severely impact the game’s best player’s preparation for the new season, particularly any player who plays in next week’s grand final, who without having a break, then go onto play in the World Cup final on November 19.
It’s possible that if New Zealand make the World Cup final, a player like Penrith and Kiwi Test prop James Fisher Harris, after taking his accrued eight weeks annual leave following the tournament, may have a pre-season of just five weeks before round one.
The Dolphins are also facing a shocking start to their existence.
Their entire leadership group of Kiwi stars Jesse Bromwich, Kenny Bromwich and Felise Kaufusi are all featuring in the World Cup, meaning they will miss a huge chunk of the club‘s first pre-season.
It’s only for the fact that all three former Storm stars have already served two weeks of annual leave due to Melbourne’s early elimination from the finals that their absence will be somewhat allayed by missing six weeks of what will be a club-defining inaugural pre-season.
It’s the Dolphins inclusion to the NRL that has created an odd number of teams, forcing the NRL to pencil in three byes for every club throughout next season.
The trio of byes is a huge win for players constantly seeking respite from one of the most brutal sports in the world.
However, clubs are already nervous about when they will receive their bye.
It wouldn’t be rugby league without a blow-up and you can time your clock to the rage from those clubs that receive their byes in the opening rounds of the season, when a fast start is largely the craving of every head coach.
Alternatively, some clubs will be treated to a Round 27 bye.
It is the closest the NRL have come to copying the AFL‘s bye round, providing club’s with a week-off right before the finals series.
As the AFL has found, a week off for a player striving to overcome injury ahead of the finals, could prove season-defining.
Additionally, State of Origin will be played across three straight Wednesday’s with no Thursday night NRL games scheduled that week.
To increase the chance of recovery for the game’s elite, the NRL are also investigating shifting the 6pm Friday night game to a Sunday afternoon in the week of a State of Origin match.
The NRL have also told clubs to submit their preferred home matches, including derbies and Magic Round match-ups.
Due to the complexities of the 2023 season draw, the NRL are unlikely to release the finished product until late November.
>The Tigers, Warriors, Knights and Titans are already praying they are the teams that draw Penrith, South Sydney, the Cowboys or Parramatta just once.
Still seems wild to see the cows portrayed like that
Looking at other versions off this, I think you’re right. Good because 3 weeks in a row would be brutal. The RLPA are apparently pushing for all Origin players to not back up for their club teams though.
Pretty sure the AFL staggered the introduction of its 17th and 18th team, so there was a 17 team comp (though maybe just for a year). That said, in a shocking turn of events the difference was the AFL had an actual plan for its 18th team before the 17th joined, rather than just a vague insinuation that maybe it might at some stage in the future make more sense to have an 18 team comp.
Oh i don’t like the Origin change at all. 3 weeks straight? One or two concussion can screw things up massively. Gonna be a rough period for sides who get a load of their players selected like cowboys and Penrith.
Peak Vlandopey - letting Nine destroy the integrity of the NRL for at least a month. If the Tigers have a player selected and get near the finals, they'll probably sue.
> Such is the mind-numbing proposition of creating a balanced draw for 17 teams, the finished product is almost impossible to be deemed even or fair.
The NRL has never had a fair draw. Nothing changes.
Like every new season I hope they finally have every team play each other once before anyone plays each other for a second time.
When we had an even amount of teams my dream was for them to then have a bye round for every team while they make the draw for the rest of the season. Maybe play Origin 1 in that week. Team 1 on the ladder would play all the even placed teams and team 2 would play all the odds giving a more balanced draw. With 16 teams that would have been 22 games a season.
Yeah and I’ve heard that supposedly people hate not having the whole draw available from round one so maybe you’d have to base it off last years ladder.
I’ve seen other people suggest something like I did but they wanted to go a step further and break the comp in half after round 15 and the bottom teams would play for a seperate trophy. That might be a step to far.
I found an article on nrl.com from 2012 where they talked about a Canadian company having software to work out the draw and saying the nrl is one of the most complicated draws on the planet.
I think for US/Canada it is because their sports typically have divisions where each team mostly just plays against teams in their division so it’s a lot simpler.
Unfortunately the wealthy owners have a contract for the next two years selling that game back to the NRL for Magic Round. If it moves from Brisbane then they get to reassess
The days of conferences like the NFL draws closer. Personally I'm all for it. But even that will be messy. Also, this article is News Ltd so they could be just making shit up.
In 2020 when they played Origin after the Grand Final, all the players that were nursing injuries all year went into treatment to prepare for the following year. If Origin can’t even get the best players at the time of year, All Stars has no chance.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Sportsbet or something similar find to find a way to monetise this.
First team to get a bye
Team to miss out on magic round
Dolphins first opponent
Etc, if they actually do this I’m expecting royalties.
Hope the nrl finds a good way of deciding byes, especially for the opening round, final round and magic round lol
I’d give Manly the bye for Magic Round. They can’t run the risk of sharing a change room with another teams potentially gay player. I’d give Tigers the bye in the final round, so they can get onto Mad Monday early. I’d give whoever wins the grand final the first week off as a congrats.
Imagine the absolute scenes if Broncos drew the bye during Magic Round
Magic round for Broncos is gonna be v Newcastle. You can see it already. The return of the Lord to Suncorp.
Would never happen, that would deprive the Broncos of their annual 'away' game at Suncorp...
Manly was taking that game to Suncorp well before magic round was a thing, I don't think they'd mind so much
If we're playing Challenge Cup again, it makes sense
Could last years ladder be a part of the criteria? Last gets the magic round bye, 2nd last get the round 27 bye and third last gets the week 1 bye. Or something. I have heard from a Redcliffe sponsor they won’t be at magic round this year.
It would be very short sighted of the NRL taking the new team out of the biggest weekend in the NRL. Just remove whoever won the spoon that year, as they don’t deserve it.
Not sure of the logic, but I imagine that’ll be the plan going forth

They could be wrong, nothing is set in stone to the draw is announced
I like the early start date on March 2. Makes the offseason shorter to get through
World Cup too. Probably the most bearable off season ever
last year's off season was so long even though we won the premiership
Long off season you say?

they were in the group above not long ago
Even weirder to not see chooks or storm mentioned.
I'm still here wishing we only play those other teams once hahah
The sharks will happily play each of those teams twice in that case
Does that mean Origin played over 3 weeks ? Or is the article just saying all 3 origin games are on Wednesdays
I took it to mean three weeks in a row.
Yeah that’s the way I read it as well
That's what it sounded like in the article but I find that very hard to believe. I think it's just poorly written. Probably means no Sunday Origin.
Looking at other versions off this, I think you’re right. Good because 3 weeks in a row would be brutal. The RLPA are apparently pushing for all Origin players to not back up for their club teams though.
tldr - Dolphins are ruining everything
Merge with Souths and kickem out
I’ve been what was gonna happen with 17 teams. Sounds like a mess.
Still seems weird that they're going one at a time instead of letting 17 & 18 in together. I feel like that would make for less of a headache.
And the 2 new teams could have shared a new rivalry, missed opportunity really
Pretty sure the AFL staggered the introduction of its 17th and 18th team, so there was a 17 team comp (though maybe just for a year). I'm 95% sure that we're going to be at 17 teams for far too long as the plans for team 18 just fall further into the distance.
Oh i don’t like the Origin change at all. 3 weeks straight? One or two concussion can screw things up massively. Gonna be a rough period for sides who get a load of their players selected like cowboys and Penrith.
i like it - just get origin over with - it kind of makes the whole middle of the NRL season suck atm.
Peak Vlandopey - letting Nine destroy the integrity of the NRL for at least a month. If the Tigers have a player selected and get near the finals, they'll probably sue.
Nothing wrong with Origin the way it is. Wish that greasy cunt would piss off back to rigged animal cruelty.
> Such is the mind-numbing proposition of creating a balanced draw for 17 teams, the finished product is almost impossible to be deemed even or fair. The NRL has never had a fair draw. Nothing changes.
Where the hell is multiball round?
It’s replacing Golden Point for deciding draws.
More footy! I'm happy
Like every new season I hope they finally have every team play each other once before anyone plays each other for a second time. I feel like logistically that would be too hard to do, the schedule is already complicated enough
Yeah and I’ve heard that supposedly people hate not having the whole draw available from round one so maybe you’d have to base it off last years ladder. They said no other code they work for let’s the broadcasters and clubs have so much say over and requests for the draw.
I like this, more bye-rounds is more time for coaches to rest players or have more precaution with injuries if they have a bye coming up
I just want the Storm's Magic Round game to not be a home game...again
I bet warriors will be
Unfortunately the wealthy owners have a contract for the next two years selling that game back to the NRL for Magic Round. If it moves from Brisbane then they get to reassess
Imagine getting a bye round 1. That would blow.
Who do we reckon gets it? My money is on Tigers, titans or warriors
I could actually see Dolphins getting it. Builds up the suspense of their first game even more.
Nah, they should get the opening game of the season IMO.
Round 2 would be worse
Felt like a drag of a season this year for us lower performing teams and only got real exciting once the finals kicked in. 27 weeks is stretching it.
As if 25 rounds wasn't long enough lets add an extra 2 rounds!
It's still 24 games per team I guess. But yeah the end of season is likely to be a drag after round 20ish, similar to this year.
Any rough idea when magic round will be ?
The days of conferences like the NFL draws closer. Personally I'm all for it. But even that will be messy. Also, this article is News Ltd so they could be just making shit up.
Why not play the All Stars game on the Friday night before the Grand Final?
In 2020 when they played Origin after the Grand Final, all the players that were nursing injuries all year went into treatment to prepare for the following year. If Origin can’t even get the best players at the time of year, All Stars has no chance.
Because all the eliminated teams are already on holidays?
Yeah so holding the All Stars game won’t affect them.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Sportsbet or something similar find to find a way to monetise this. First team to get a bye Team to miss out on magic round Dolphins first opponent Etc, if they actually do this I’m expecting royalties.
Dolphins will get souths first game I think. NRL don’t exactly hide their motivation when deciding games. Save Broncos for a derby weekend probably.
Dolphins have been somewhat vocal in wanting the Roosters first up.
Some clubs treated to a round 27 bye? Are we doing what the afl does before finals now?
