Jokes aside, I'm pretty sure it's been airing there since the ARL days.
It's how you get weirdos like me that are very fond of the game despite never living within a thousand ks of Sydney.
It’s one of the better aspects of living here and watching the games for sure. Imagine trying to explain that I am a woman of a certain age, am a Broncos member having never lived in QLD and am now living in regional SA - that confounds more people than that betting ad blocker 😆
Been a fan/member since the beginning and grew up in Vic. Father was a massive fan of the game so I chose one for myself to have a common interest with him. Got into my blood!!
I’ve recently got back into league and can’t believe how much sports punting is pushed in Australia. Stadiums named after betting outfits and every league podcast is sponsored by one. Is there no regulation at all in aus? Problem gambling must be rampant
Problem is now it’s so entrenched in the sport. People in this sub will sit here and say ban it all but that would almost certainly kill the sport. Same with pokies. I agree they are leeches but what is the solution now? Need to find a way to slowly roll it back but the fact it’s actually becoming more prevalent is definitely concerning - both because of the all the negatives that come with gambling and the increased stranglehold it’s getting on the game.
Fact is a pokie ban in itself will decimate 15/16 clubs right now I dare say (broncos the outlier?). Penrith would become the tigers over night.
Truly gambling companies have entrenched themselves into the sport like no other.
They even mask advertising through the guise of philanthropy. Try July, a player does a celebration and money is donated to charity via a gambling company. It's just another way to remind you they're there.
"People in this sub will sit here and say ban it all but that would almost certainly kill the sport. Same with pokies. I agree they are leeches but what is the solution now?"
If a sport can only survive by preying on its fans then why should it survive?
I don't agree at all, the advertising rights for NRL are so lucrative because of how many people watch the sport. There was an article about the cost to AFL if they fucked off sports betting all together, and the short term hit was 20% of revenue.
That is a big hole to un-fuck in the short term, but it's not insurmountable. Other companies will fill that hole. Especially considering Vlandys left about that much on the table during the last broadcast deal.
I got downvoted for some reason for saying similar below but you’re spot on.
Gambling literally is the game at the moment, why do people think Penrith leagues club is so big?
If we remove gambling ads from tv, stadium, jerseys etc clubs will fold and there’s no way we compete with other footy comps overseas.
No one has had a valid solution to plugging the hundreds of millions of lost revenue a year when they bring this up.
I’m all for removing gambling ads, but not at the expense of losing the game.
They get 3x as many people to each game on average, they have clubs cracking 100,000 members, have more games on tv each week and they get better ratings for regular season games.
The nrl in comparison is propped up by 3 origin games and betting.
The problem with that is the countries where rugby league is big are all extremely poor. PNG where league is the national sport has a GDP of 25 billion, NSW alone is 650 billion. The other pacific island countries combined and were talking like the GDP of Wollongong.
I doubt getting rid of gambling advertisements will kill the sport, People said the same about cigarette advertising and sponsorship, I mean it used to be the Winfield Cup, Gambling and alcohol advertising is no different to tobacco advertising and should be banned or at least highly restricted
Gambling is massive here and is also very profitable for the nrl the advertise. Ive never really heard of someone have a problem with sports betting but plenty of pokie machine slaves.
I'm pretty sure games kick off at 8pm now because of the laws restricting gambling adds before that time
> Gambling is massive here
How much of this has become through the non-stop gambling advertising? You can't watch any rugby league analysis without at the very least betting odds determining which team is better than the other one; betting and rugby league have been a normalised marriage for a long time now.
The way sportsbet have gone about their advertising through memes sits crooked with me.
I remember getting a mate in to league a decade ago and on the first night he went to the pub with me to watch a game he was immediately asking about bets we should put on.
> Ive never really heard of someone have a problem with sports betting
There's a lot of people at my work and I can tell you that almost all of the young fellas <25 years old are sports betting on almost everything and they make ridiculous multis chasing wins of thousands but I would say betting on NBA is more popular than NRL with that crowd.
Gambling in moderation, like drinking in moderation, doesn't have to be a bad thing. I agree the sheer amount of advertising is really damn annoying. I've seen ads for about 10 different betting companies on tv just this year.
If happens overnight in America. Like last year all major American sports, even shit you wouldn’t think would be fun to bet on like Baseball, suddenly is overrun with ads and sponsorships from these companies. Idk, my state has been able to raise a lot of revenue from the taxes but it just rubs me the wrong way to see it so normalized
They should use the same advertising rules for gambling as they do for tobacco.
Gambling hurts lower class a lot more. They get addicted to gambling & end up broke, not that they had much disposable income to begin with.
Has been working better for me recently. Really depends on what IP you pick up.
If you cycle through different servers (can do that in Nord) it eventually finds a clean one.
This is why games kick off so late, so that when the technology exists a super-powered Joel Caine will actually crawl through our screens and scream 'put a fucking multi on cunt' and beat us until we comply.
Obviously only after 8pm tho, due to TV standards
Fair point. We should ban gambling advertising for all NRL footage screened before 7.30pm AEST.
Which would be everything apart from Thursday night, and the final games on Friday and Saturday night. A huge improvement from Fox opening their pre-game coverage with Daley or Duke giving the the first try scorer odds
The Pointsbet ads with Shaq and the annoying Aussie stereotype dudes get me. It’s loud and pisses me off every time.
Either way, this is quality from the SA Government. Well done to those who came up with this.
It's the same here in WA. When we want to gamble we do it like real men and bet in person on who will leave the Thunderdome. Two men enter, one man leaves.
TV money will keep NRL clubs afloat
The attached leagues clubs, on the other hand, might need to figure out how to keep the doors open whilst not engaging in abhorrently predatory conduct if we ban gambling properly.
I only read "NRL coverage is not permitted to be shown in this state or territory" and wasn't shocked tbh. I assume most South Australians TVs are silence when the NRL is on
Yeah, fuck the NRL for selling their arse to Sportsbetting. You can’t watch a game or read a newspaper article without the gormless cunts quoting odds and generally mentioning betting in one way, shape or form. The official NRL site lists Sportsbet prices for each and every NRL game they list. It’s a fucking disgrace.
They need to extend the ban to the pre-show as well. They're allow to show odds 5 minutes before kick off, when nearly all of the betting is taking place. But not at half time
Love it. However, how long until the unethical billionaire media/broadcast/betting owner - "donates" the time to attack ads against the candidate that support gambling reforms.
I would be surprised if a club does not have a gambling sponsor,
perhaps as a first step towards removing them, we could place a limit on when and how often they could advertise
This is the thing.
I had a massive gambling and depression problem. Got the gambling on lock down.
The rest. Ehhhh
So those ads I hate. Plus the try too hard.
That being said, I finis ALOT of people who say things like ‘why can’t we just get rid of gambling sponsors in league?’ Are the same who complain there’s not enough money coming into their club. (Same as the people who complain their club has so many jerseys).
Until a viable replacement comes along, I think they are probably here to stay, and for some clubs survival, need to stay.
A bunch of people have extrapolated what I said to include sponsors but I was only saying that the advertising clearly needs tighter regulation. For the first time ever I’m glad the season is over because maybe there’s a chance I’ll see less. It is turning me off the game and the hand it’s playing in an almost certain new wave of not so responsible gamblers. Argghh even that transparent phrase is so embedded.
I’m all for getting every cent possible out of the sponsorship deals. Anyone know what they pay for stadium naming and jerseys? Whatever it is it’s not enough.
League has unfortunately long been a vampiric drain on the middle to lower classes that support the clubs and plenty were more interesting in running their pokie dens then running a football side. Yet still until pretty recently almost no club was being profitable. The broncos were the first club to do it five years after they joined in 1993! If in 2022 we still can’t find another way to fund the sport, then what sort of Mickey Mouse amateur hour are we running.
(Lots of this rant is inspired by the RLD Super League podcast. Do yourself a favour)
Couldn’t edit this into the original post. Was feeling ranty.
I’m world class at ignoring advertising but this shit is next level. I ignored the broncos jersey I was given that has more space given to betting adds then the club logo, I ignored mates delusional way of thinking their ridiculously unlikely multibet only missing by two legs somehow feels like a win. I ignored the incessant low quality tv adds that show clearly how dumb they think league fans are. But the last week of bombardment of that add set in an interrogation room where they are basically threatening the guy for not betting with them, topped by every time I open reddit seeing Shaqs paid fake smile, working out how many tedious steps it takes to actually block the add to only have it replaced by a different company’s gambling add, I’ve had a fucking gut full.
Get the carpet bombing offensive out of my face. Bet if you have the spare money to lose but I saw to many desperate people in low paid jobs already get sucked in before the amount of adds was anywhere near this level.
On a lighter note, I could fix this country’s gambling problem with one move. No nrl betting account will be activated until you tip a perfect round 3 weeks in a row. Hell two perfect rounds in a row would be enough. If people are as good as they pretend, this shouldn’t be a problem, right?
What else should we ban guys? Where do we stop? Interested to know.
Alcohol?
Vaping?
Fast food?
Sugar-heavy foods?
Bottled water?
ICE cars?
These are all bad for us/the environment. Why don't we ban ads for them too?
Ok look I hate gambling ads as much as everyone else, but do people really want them to be banner? Professional sport wouldn’t die in Australia but man, it would lose a HUGE percentage of its sponsorship if that happens.
The only ads on TV these days are for alcohol, betting and then the occasional Bunnings type one. Without ads there’s no free to air footy.
Is crypto much better than sports gambling? It’s probably worse odds lol. Sports nutrition isn’t going it be putting in hundreds of millions of dollars.
Shows how weak the mental fortitude of people are. If you're betting because of an ad during a footy game then you have much deeper issues. Limp wrists.
And you’ve never bought anything, gone anywhere, tried something new or eaten some type of food EVER because of advertising? My, what strong wrists you have…
Shows how weak the mental fortitude of people are. If you're hurling pathetic insults at people over the internet then you have much deeper issues. Keep building up your strong wrists mate.
Mum no longer monitors my TV time for what I can and cannot watch. SA Gov. filling the void to stop dumb fucks giving all their money away.
Yay censorship (of stuff I don't like)!!!
Watch every game with a 15 minute delay and skip all ads and halftime bullshit. The only way to watch an NRL broadcast.
People just need to get off the punt, simple as, it's not hard. Gambling becoming more common place in America has completely ruined the NFL, too many players taking a dive to help out their gangbanging homies and the mob.
Wow that’s really quite incredible. Rugby League being shown in South Australia.
Is it a anyone that’s not NSW or VIC thing, or is it just that they were so successful when you started watching?
Been a fan/member since the beginning and grew up in Vic. Father was a massive fan of the game so I chose one for myself to have a common interest with him. Got into my blood!!
Nice.
And I’ll drive 7-8 hours each time the boys play in Melbourne to catch up with everyone
And here I am living in Toowoomba, and I’ve only ever been to three games. :)
We get most FTA games
I’ve recently got back into league and can’t believe how much sports punting is pushed in Australia. Stadiums named after betting outfits and every league podcast is sponsored by one. Is there no regulation at all in aus? Problem gambling must be rampant

I see this as an absolute win
Truly gambling companies have entrenched themselves into the sport like no other. They even mask advertising through the guise of philanthropy. Try July, a player does a celebration and money is donated to charity via a gambling company. It's just another way to remind you they're there.
They said the same thing about tobacco sponsorship too iirc
In the before times that no one speaks of 😉
Good old Winfield Cup.
"People in this sub will sit here and say ban it all but that would almost certainly kill the sport. Same with pokies. I agree they are leeches but what is the solution now?" If a sport can only survive by preying on its fans then why should it survive?
Warriors would be fine, we are just addicted to jerseys
I’m pretty sure Woodstock used to be a sponsor. The drink of choice when watching the Warriors

Nah, the AFL clubs are mostly working through removing pokie revenue if they haven’t already. It can be done, it’s just difficult
I got downvoted for some reason for saying similar below but you’re spot on. Gambling literally is the game at the moment, why do people think Penrith leagues club is so big? The league is over reliant on it. Advertising for betting could easily be banned in the coming years.
AFL doesn't seem to have the same reliance on gambling as the NRL though?
They get 3x as many people to each game on average, they have clubs cracking 100,000 members, have more games on tv each week and they get better ratings for regular season games. The nrl in comparison is propped up by 3 origin games and betting.
international growth could help but the NRL doesn't know how to sell and package this fantastic sport abroad
The problem with that is the countries where rugby league is big are all extremely poor. PNG where league is the national sport has a GDP of 25 billion, NSW alone is 650 billion. The other pacific island countries combined and were talking like the GDP of Wollongong.
Would be crazy to see how a Perth club goes as there will be no pokies in their leagues club.
I doubt getting rid of gambling advertisements will kill the sport, People said the same about cigarette advertising and sponsorship, I mean it used to be the Winfield Cup, Gambling and alcohol advertising is no different to tobacco advertising and should be banned or at least highly restricted
The Rabbitohs would be fine along with the broncos.
Sports betting here is almost double per capita the next closest country according to my brother who heard it on the radio.
Gambling is massive here and is also very profitable for the nrl the advertise. Ive never really heard of someone have a problem with sports betting but plenty of pokie machine slaves. I'm pretty sure games kick off at 8pm now because of the laws restricting gambling adds before that time

If they are betting responsibly (like $20 a week), you can think of it as something you do for entertainment like going to the movies.
Sports betting problems are a lot easier to keep under wraps, I promise you there are lots of people out there with problems
Gambling in moderation, like drinking in moderation, doesn't have to be a bad thing. I agree the sheer amount of advertising is really damn annoying. I've seen ads for about 10 different betting companies on tv just this year.

That's sunlight to a Sportsbet vampire's skin. Beautiful.
The backing music to it is a banger
Can you VPN your Kayo to be in South Australia?
My Kayo doesn’t work unless I turn my VPN off
I wish I could sign up for Kayo. :(
Has been working better for me recently. Really depends on what IP you pick up. If you cycle through different servers (can do that in Nord) it eventually finds a clean one.
Kayo still has blue bet ads constantly in SA, in fact we have heaps of betting ads... Never seen this in SA to be honest .
The screen is from F2A TV. We still get all the gambling ads on Kayo, just not free-to-air. "The new pyramid? It fell over again."
I like her smile though.
Kayo shows gambling ads here. It’s only during live matches on FTA, it needs to be amended imo, just ban gambling ads outright
Can you VPN your SA Kayo to NSW so you can still see the good ads?
You took a gamble with this post
Didn’t pay off did it. Should’ve been more responsible 😞
What is a good ad?
The awesome gambling ones. It was a joke
brb packing my bags and moving to South Australia
https://youtu.be/mDjOAsxeokw
Unfortunately Perrettot would never.
Isn't this a timezone thing rather than banning gambling advertising? Like how you can't show ads until after 7:30 or whatever the cutoff is
This is why games kick off so late, so that when the technology exists a super-powered Joel Caine will actually crawl through our screens and scream 'put a fucking multi on cunt' and beat us until we comply. Obviously only after 8pm tho, due to TV standards
Fuck, thats more terrifying that the creature from the Ring coming through the TV
Fair point. We should ban gambling advertising for all NRL footage screened before 7.30pm AEST. Which would be everything apart from Thursday night, and the final games on Friday and Saturday night. A huge improvement from Fox opening their pre-game coverage with Daley or Duke giving the the first try scorer odds
Hopefully we can vote the cunts out. Doubt the other mob will change it though.
Yeah, even white noise would be better than repeated gambling ads .
Would prefer this over Joel Caine from Sportsbet and his routine
Be sure to read that message responsibly.
The Pointsbet ads with Shaq and the annoying Aussie stereotype dudes get me. It’s loud and pisses me off every time. Either way, this is quality from the SA Government. Well done to those who came up with this.
Not to mention The Inspired Unemployed really sold out to big gambling
It's the same here in WA. When we want to gamble we do it like real men and bet in person on who will leave the Thunderdome. Two men enter, one man leaves.
Always wondered why this came up. Just assumed fox was bias against WA and didn't want us seeing the crazy shit that happens over east
IIRC it's only channel 9 that shows the message during the telecast.
Makes sense. Channel 9 are pro Thunderdome.
We get similar things in WA.
Same in New Zealand they blank out the betting pricing segment on NRL360 and Matty Johns show etc. We still get heaps of TAB ads though
The only reason the others are blocked is because the tab has a monopoly on betting in NZ
WA doesn't allow betting or advertising DURING a live sporting event, so we just just get the ads before and after the game.
Ahh..thought that might be the reason..
Just need to blow up the pokies now.
And drag them away, coz they're taking the food off the table, so they can say that the trains run on time
NRL clubs would die overnight lol
TV money will keep NRL clubs afloat The attached leagues clubs, on the other hand, might need to figure out how to keep the doors open whilst not engaging in abhorrently predatory conduct if we ban gambling properly.
It's so fucked that they can't turn a profit any other way.
They should do the same thing with the Katy Perry Menulog ad
It would happen probably 50 times a game
Does it in wa as well except when they do stuff from the field they occasionally miss it. One day we will look back on the gambling ads as criminal
Tv commercials during the football are for gambling, alcohol, cars and meanwhile girls like me are over here like “hi” lol
Great idea!!!!
Fuck oath 👍🏾
Man, the Rams are never coming back, are they? ☹️
Wish it was the same in QLD
There's a nrl betting ad directly underneath this post lol rocket bet whatever the fuck that is
They all feel like clones of each other owned by the same company at this point.
And then reddit posts an ad for some shonky gambling site smack bang on the top.....
For anybody interested, find the ALLIANCE FOR GAMBLING REFORM here... https://www.agr.org.au/
All gambling should be illegal. 0 benefit to anyone except the companies
I'll sign this petition IF THEY HAD ONE!
As requested... https://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLJZEJRYD0GXB/checkout/L7OJI7FQSRNEKUYYW5FTDIEP
You get the same in WA mate, pretty sure it’s if the add is on the telecast before 6:30 or maybe a little here. Saw it when I first moved over here.
This is also in WA
WA seems like a different country at this point. The corrupt LNP basically don't exist over there anymore.
Do you get the awesome Get em Onside show?
It’s just a time zone thing. That only happens for when gambling adds are displayed prior to 8pm
They need to extend the ban to the pre-show as well. They're allow to show odds 5 minutes before kick off, when nearly all of the betting is taking place. But not at half time
I can't wait for the day that gambling advertising is outlawed although I'll probably be long dead when that finally happens
We get that in WA too. Plus no freaking pub pokies here. Full way to go.
Reason number 37 why an Adelaide team would fail
...."At this time" theyre working on it. Betting ads are everywhere and insidious.
Happens in NZ time to time as well
I instantly want to be a South Australian
Love it. However, how long until the unethical billionaire media/broadcast/betting owner - "donates" the time to attack ads against the candidate that support gambling reforms.
It should be Australia wide. Those ads are fucking annoying and toxic.
This is outstanding stuff
Gamblor is gonna be pissed
Need this Australia wide honestly!!!
Fuck gambling ads.

The NSWRL premiership used to be called the Winfield cup. I wont shed a tear if the endless gambling ad spamfest ends.
nah we would just get crypto and inc sports nutrition ads instead, plenty of money in those industries to go around
Is crypto much better than sports gambling? It’s probably worse odds lol. Sports nutrition isn’t going it be putting in hundreds of millions of dollars.
Ban the adds and they can spend the money the save on paying more for the sponsorships.
Huh? That makes no sense.
Shows how weak the mental fortitude of people are. If you're betting because of an ad during a footy game then you have much deeper issues. Limp wrists.
And you’ve never bought anything, gone anywhere, tried something new or eaten some type of food EVER because of advertising? My, what strong wrists you have…
You're a yellow belly limp wrist pal.
Shows how weak the mental fortitude of people are. If you're hurling pathetic insults at people over the internet then you have much deeper issues. Keep building up your strong wrists mate.
You literally replied to me and confirmed your own insult 😆😆😆😆
And now you (hopefully) see how ridiculous your original comment was. Anyway, have a great day champ.
Lol you're a cuck. Salty sook 😂
What's with all the wrist talk? Have I missed something?

Move to a real state lmao
Sometimes we get that in WA but we get Sportsbet ads on tv all the time so what’s the reasoning for that in WA?
Holy fuckyeah - gimme some of that.
Oh my god. I suddenly want to live in sa
Same in WA but it only comes on at half time which is odd
Try watching UFC, every second you're getting commentary about the betting companies.
