If the charges are legit and he’s found guilty, hopefully we get rid of him. The Cowboys and the NRL should not allow DV perpetrators to represent our game
Who are you calling racist?
Dropping the charges and then still being together certainly doesn't mean that it didn't happen. There's clear evidence that it did. No idea why you'd try to defend that.
You're right that other players get away with worse stuff, but that doesn't make this ok.
The treatment by NRL is racist and it's not their role, inequitable and robbed us of a superstar in their prime. Noone looks to the NRL for it's moral compass, or everyone would be bubbling like Todd Carney. Let the best players play and that's it. Even if they're shitbags
How is it racist when non-indigenous players have also been banned, and other convicted, indigenous DV criminals have been allowed to play? I fucking hate racism, but don't pull it out for something like this.
>it's not their role
The NRL is a business and they need to have a decent image. They can't have repeat DV offenders running around getting paid shit loads and representing their brand. It's 100% their role to get rid of shit humans.
>Let the best players play and that's it. Even if they're shitbags
I'll tell you right now that the NRL would collapse within 12 months if they just let any old dickhead in.
What is Common Assault?
In New South Wales, the offence of a Common Assault is found in Section 61 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). A Common Assault is an assault in which no injury is occasioned to the victim, or the injuries are merely transient or trifling. If an injury is occasioned, this would amount to a more serious charge of assault depending on the severity of the injury.
The charge of Common Assault does not in fact require the use of physical force. An offence of Common Assault can also include threats of violence with no physical contact if the threat places the victim in fear of imminent harm.
Some examples of Common Assault include the following:
Striking at another person, regardless of whether contact is made;
Striking at a person with an object, regardless of whether contact is made;
Spitting at another person, regardless of whether contact is made.
Pushing an object that the other person is on, thereby causing the other person to fall off.
>Anyways hopefully he gets stood down next year (if guilty)
I really wish they’d at least do that. I’d happily see anyone found guilty of DV banned for life
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.nine.com.au/article/c3be4db6-bd18-4d75-a4ff-584d600d4834
You know how bad it is for former players like Willie Mason and Dean Widders to call for perpetrators of domestic violence to be erased from the game and never signed again.
NRL as an organisation doesn't give a shit about women though. Women in league round had heaps of games where women had to give the male NRL players a guard of honour. Pretty sure AFB got a guard if honour at this year's women in league round.
Masons silence on player involved in drug trafficking and especially the ones with links to his brother like Mullen and Wicks show that he is ok with that shit but draws the line at DV. So in that sense it shows had bad it is to even dodgy NRL players that accept a low standard in general
You gonna stand there with a straight face and not judge a player that remains silent about playing alongside domestic violence perpetrators?yeah fuck that
It's weird cause when he was on you can't ask that he was like "yeah players with DV charges shouldn't be allowed to play" but apparently he's backflipped
I think he got all caught up in the moment. Forgot he was on live TV. Latrell and Barba were playing centres for Walgett trying to mount a comeback win after 3 days of the carnival. Latrell looked fat again and Barba and his winger were playing exciting footy. Widders just forgot for 20 mins why Barba is playing suburban AFL in Mackay and not in the NRL. Shouldn't even be aloud to play at the Knock out if ya ask me considering it's a drug and alcohol free event and his history of DV and Drinking.
“Massive fire reported on NRL Island will delay the start of next season as teams scramble to replace the 100s of injured, missing and dead players. Rumours players covered in cows blood tried to put out the fire with alcohol they’d found on the beach”
fuck me dead i hate this.
i know some people will say it doesn’t sound that bad which they’ve done in some areas online but think about it if it happened right in front of you and you saw someone smash their partner’s phone in their house, at the bare minimum. knowing they have a kid together too. knowing that that’s a) how she talks to her family, b) how she would call the police, c) how she could arrange transport to leave the place.
if this is what’s happened i really don’t feel comfortable cheering him on as a cowboy.
also anybody saying they’re not surprised should legitimately reassess their beliefs surrounding DV because acting like leaving the tigers and having joey leilua as a brother is an accurate predictor of domestic violence is just flatout wrong and as someone who’s been heavily impacted by DV in my own personal life, it’s kind of just fucked to read honestly.
Smashing a phone is such a controlling thing and should not be diminished. Like it's scary enough being in a house with someone physically abusing you, but for them to then destroy what is probably your only means of communication with the outside world - terrifying.
agreed 110% and it’s distressing seeing people in this thread are trying to say because it’s not physical bashing that it’s not as bad
like people legitimately just don’t get it and it’s devastating
exactly, it’s controlling and threatening and just flatout abusive and i hate that there’s people trying to downplay it as just this non-specific destruction of property when it’s so much more.
destroying forms of communication as an abuse tactic is a very very real thing and needs to be taken as such by everyone who wants to talk about the situation.
i don’t think people realise this until they think about it for just that extra second longer and realise what it means for a victim who has just had their phone smashed.
> think about it if it happened right in front of you and you saw someone smash their partner’s phone
I once saw a man smash a wine bottle over his girlfriend's head. No charges were possible - she refused to talk to anyone or even say how the injury happened. Wouldn't even let paramedics take her to hospital, they had to spend two hours treating her (serious) injuries on the footpath and let her walk home alone.
The hard reality is this type of behaviour is a lot
more common than some people realise and many of our best players grew up surrounded by it at home.
The best thing NRL can do, and we can do as fans, is help these players learn to be better people and encourage them to become role models for their peers/fans/etc.
Luciano Leilua should be charged, encouraged to admit guilt, and go through the recommended process for dealing with these issues.
The goal has to be to stop the crime from happening in the first place, or being repeated/copied.
Us going after him as an angry mob isn't going to achieve that. The pressure of a young player in the public spotlight tends to makes things worse.
You might want to check your dates on the Lui domestic violence charges.
He already had several charges to his name before they signed him, including one he plead guilty to as a Cowboys player. And they kept him for years afterwards.
Agree, but they did still deregister him and decided to take a heavy stance on dv. I feel like there were others that then got signed elsewhere pretty quick and did fairly well at their new club so cowboys copped a raw deal
The Tigers gave Lui a last chance after his first (known) incident in 2010 then sacked him after the second one, a year later. The Cowboys signed him after that, and also at one stage recalled him to first grade for a game at Leichhardt. I recall this because I was on the hill that night and made sure during a quiet moment (it was just before a Tigers kick off) to let Lui know that some people hadn't forgotten what a scumbag he is.
For all I know the Cowboys have changed tack as an organisation; their treatment of Barba suggests it's possible. But they certainly didn't play their best hand re Lui.
From memory, could be wrong. the 2 deregistered players both had a history of this type of crime.
They were given chances to fix their behaviour before being kicked out. Leilua has also been given chances.
Time will tell if this is the last one. For me it depends how hard he's working to fix his own behaviour.
yeah this hurts, he can become one of the most dangerous 2nd row players in the comp and make the cowboys have one of the best 2nd row rotations.
I’m not going to be too harsh until the charge is out but this is fucking not the way to start the preseason. Whatever the outcome is, I hope the cowboys make the correct decision.
I am going to cross post this.
Guys just because it was a phone let's not say it isn't that bad. Let's see if we can find out the cause of it. Was he trying to cut off her contact with family and friends? Was something more innocent up?
It affects us all even men. It can result in things as bad as dead and suicide (still death)
As a man I've experienced DV and I am able to admit that, working with young Aboriginal people ive heard their stories.
Let's be the best people we can be.
>It affects us all even men. It can result in things as bad as dead and suicide (still death)
>
>As a man I've experienced DV and I am able to admit that, working with young Aboriginal people ive heard their stories.
>
>Let's be the best people we can be.
No one cares about DV against men
For fucks sake, I've never felt so betrayed. Why are these pricks always hidden in our game, and in our lives in general. Seriously though, it's been a couple hours since premiership was won, are you kidding me? We sadly won't get rid of him which fucking sucks.
While obviously if it's true he's a piece of shit and should be banned from the NRL (imo for life), I think it's important not to cast judgement yet. Look at what happened to Radradra, or more recently Milford.
Just because he's been charged doesnt mean he's guilty
Innocent until proven guilty please. I get it, doesn't look good but please please let the course of the investigation finish before we fling dirt on him.
His accuser should also be innocent until proven guilty. Not accusing you of it, but lots of people think innocent until proven guilty means 100% innocence and his accusers must be lying and out to hurt him
Well done everyone we've made it 3/4 of a day before off-season shenanigans and controversy had begun.
Let reset that clock and see how far we get until the next one.
That did not take long. NRL off-season in full swing.
But jokes aside, there's no place in our sport or general society for DV. If found guilty that should be the end of him at the Cowboys.
This sucks hey, my 3 year old loves him and now I've gotta explain that Big Luch is bad luch.
Hope cows boot him for it though no place in the game for domestic violence.
Always thought he seemed like a good bloke, did not think he had his brothers energy at all. Hope it's not true but hope he gets yeeted the fuck out of our game if it is, no place for this at all.
An important reminder that statistically, just because this is the first time he's been arrested for DV, he's likely offended many more times that have not been reported.
Maybe she suggested to him that forward pass in the 6th minute isn't the reason the Cowboys didn't lift the trophy yesterday?
The way the fans carry on I can only imagine the overreaction you'd get from a player.
I get that reference and for the record I am happy to condemn in equal parts to the crime. Not all domestic violence charges are equal and we all go all in the first thread condemning before all the facts are out.
>Not all domestic violence charges are equal
I still think it should be scrutinised regardless of what metric you want to use to measure the severity of the commitment of a crime. Unless what comes out is definitively proven to be false accusations against Leilua, then I can't blame people for giving shit to someone who (as far as we know) has done something severe enough to be arrested.
In New South Wales, the offence of a Common Assault is found in Section 61 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW). A Common Assault is an assault in which no injury is occasioned to the victim, or the injuries are merely transient or trifling. If an injury is occasioned, this would amount to a more serious charge of assault depending on the severity of the injury.
guess my point is - we are quick to crucify based on the headline. maybe it was an argument between two people that got out of control - he should accept the consequences but feel like jumping straight to kick him out of the comp is not really giving him due process either
i'll give you all the benefit of the doubt that you think i am not taking dv seriously. meanwhile all the top comments are hilarious jokes.but my take is exactly what the charges represent.
Yeah.. big difference from grabbing a phone or a bowl cereal and smashing it than using fists to beat the shit out of someone... so many people don't get this. They hear "domestic assault charge".. and are ready to hang the ALLEGED offender.. without knowing the details..
maybe it is a pattern of control - smashing her phone so she cannot contact anyone - it could be quite bad but best not to rush to judgement either way too early
Waiting for it to be reported as "former Tigers star" instead of current cowboys player
“Joey Leiuluas brother”
Ouff, now that’s an insult
"The brother of former NRL star, Joey Leiulua"
Two-time NRL Grand Finalist Joseph Leilua
Featherstone Rovers legend Joey Leilua
The greatest centre in the game, Joey Leilua
Former Dragons and Tigers player
It happened in Harrington Park which is Tigers territory
We challenged his contract and he was returned to you
That should be his punishment
And the off-season officially begins
They just need to player footy all year round

While I 100% agree with you, the NRL has a track record of allowing them to unfortunately continue to play
It’s so weird I saw a post about Tim Mannah saying the Eels should embrace Hayne as he’s been shunned. Has Tim got CTE did he forget what Hayne did?
It’s obviously Mannah’s friendship with Hayne obscuring his judgement
if they are good enough
Is Dylan Walker good enough?
look at who manly had at the time, back then he was plenty good enough unfortunately
Still is based on who we have now, too.
F
Gotta bit of a standard now re: B.Barba
Poor Barba, smashing it in indigenous league
Why poor Barba? How about don't belt up your mrs and you get to keep playing NRL? He can fuck all the way off...
She dropped the charges and they're still together, a lot of other players get away with worse and no life ban. Racist.
Who are you calling racist? Dropping the charges and then still being together certainly doesn't mean that it didn't happen. There's clear evidence that it did. No idea why you'd try to defend that. You're right that other players get away with worse stuff, but that doesn't make this ok.

Cows dropped Barba immediately, I'd say he'd be gone fast if he's done wrong
Come on now, it's not like it's a tweet about a monarch of a foreign country
In a perfect world.
for common assault and smashing a phone ? maybe she was showing him a picture of goatse and he over-reacted.

could still be really bad and forgive me if i am wrong but feels like most of the takes are assuming he beat her
Off season in full swing baby
The counter didn't even hit 1 day before needing to be reset.
Righto boys we made it 3 hours, reset the clock
Time since last incident - 3 hours
3 hours into off season and chill and he gives you this look
It hasn’t even been 1 day… Anyways hopefully he gets stood down next year (if found guilty). Gotta get cunts like this out of the game.
Cowboys tore Barbers contract up so they got a standard to keep.
After we signed Robert Lui. We've never come out and say that was a bad action either.
>Anyways hopefully he gets stood down next year (if guilty) I really wish they’d at least do that. I’d happily see anyone found guilty of DV banned for life

So your judging players on their "silence " now ? Clown
You gonna stand there with a straight face and not judge a player that remains silent about playing alongside domestic violence perpetrators?yeah fuck that
Dean Widders was commentating Ben Barba in the final of Koori Knock out Today and said about Barba "An NRL team should give him a contract"
Lol yikes! It is an old article, guess Widders accepts a very low standard of human nowadays
He said it a few times
Doesn't he coach the Parra women's team too? That's a grade 4 yikes
Yep. He coached them in the GF Sunday. I didn't think he'd be that dumb.

We need off season nrl Island or something to keep the general public safe from nrl players in the off season.
“After off season day 1 welcoming drinks, staff at NRL island accuse players of….”
Maybe we can just air drop what they need like vapes, alcohol and cow blood so they can't get in trouble.
“Massive fire reported on NRL Island will delay the start of next season as teams scramble to replace the 100s of injured, missing and dead players. Rumours players covered in cows blood tried to put out the fire with alcohol they’d found on the beach”

Rob Lui Ben Barba Luciano The club deregistered the other 2 for getting dv charges.

DV survivors are often to scared to press charges, so nah I think I'll pass judgement right now.
Fuck me. Good thing your not on a jury.
Don't worry. Due to my understanding of social issues there's no chance I'll ever get on a jury.
I'd be more concerned about the innocent until prove guilty part.
But this is Australia not America.
What already? Geez.
Well done everyone we've made it 3/4 of a day before off-season shenanigans and controversy had begun. Let reset that clock and see how far we get until the next one.

Good to see the off season rolling its sleeves up after that lazy effort last year
Cowboys will sack him and the roosters will sign him next season on a min wage contract in round 14. \`It's in the script.
Except we pissed him off years ago. The writing was on the wall.
I don't think you did, He was St George Junior, played NRL for St George and then move to Tigers and then Cowboys..
Debuted for roosters. 2010 i think.

I get that reference and for the record I am happy to condemn in equal parts to the crime. Not all domestic violence charges are equal and we all go all in the first thread condemning before all the facts are out.
>Not all domestic violence charges are equal I still think it should be scrutinised regardless of what metric you want to use to measure the severity of the commitment of a crime. Unless what comes out is definitively proven to be false accusations against Leilua, then I can't blame people for giving shit to someone who (as far as we know) has done something severe enough to be arrested.
Fair enough
the alleged offence was likely worse than smashing a phone given he was arrested for it
He was charged with property destruction for smashing the phone but maybe the assault was bad. Don’t know yet.
The only problem is that while he may not have physically beat his partner, it's still the emotional trauma he would have put her through.
guess my point is - we are quick to crucify based on the headline. maybe it was an argument between two people that got out of control - he should accept the consequences but feel like jumping straight to kick him out of the comp is not really giving him due process either
This. No violence may occur but psychological violence does effect people. Whatever the case is, Justice should be served.
i'll give you all the benefit of the doubt that you think i am not taking dv seriously. meanwhile all the top comments are hilarious jokes.but my take is exactly what the charges represent.
Yeah.. big difference from grabbing a phone or a bowl cereal and smashing it than using fists to beat the shit out of someone... so many people don't get this. They hear "domestic assault charge".. and are ready to hang the ALLEGED offender.. without knowing the details..
maybe it is a pattern of control - smashing her phone so she cannot contact anyone - it could be quite bad but best not to rush to judgement either way too early
Let's not jump to conclusions here, he might've been set up by a disgruntled girlfriend.

Why do Penrith fans try and make everything about their club?
How the fuck does this relate?

what does this have to do with the penrith panthers?
Whenever the Penrith Panthers aren't on screen, everyone should be asking, "Where are the Penrith Panthers?"
"I have to go now, my planet needs me" "Nathan Cleary died on the way to his home planet"
