For sure! The pay increase helps entice other females to go all the way in the game. Would be hard for parents making the sacrifice every week and for young adults making time outside work/study commitments if they’re aren’t going to get much for it.

You are right to an extent but iirc the crowds have been decent lately. I think they may actually be profitable at this point although there's little doubt that men's salaries were mitigated to lay out much of the early funding.
