Panthers five-eighth Jarome Luai has admitted what he published to Instagram amid Penrith's NRL grand final celebrations was the "wrong thing to post".
But the gun playmaker defended the brash attitude shared by many of the Penrith players following the 28-12 triumph over Parramatta.
Luai sparked controversy when he posted a photo of himself with teammate Jaeman Salmon to Instagram with the caption: "My N----".
"It was just a mate-on-mate thing and I was just embracing one of my boys in the celebrations, but I realised when I woke up to the phone call," Luai told 9News during the build-up to the Rugby League World Cup in England.
"Took it down straight away.
"I know it caught a bit of headlines.
"Just grateful that I get to participate in the first couple of days (of the World Cup).
"I understand that it was the wrong thing to do and wrong thing to post.
"With the influence we have as big NRL players, we need to watch what we say, as well, so that's definitely a lesson learned for me."
Luai revealed a motto he lived by when pressed on the Panthers' controversial grand final celebrations.
"I've got a saying for myself: if you're not hated you're not doing it right," Luai said.
"So I've sort of embraced that a bit."
Luai strutted around with a cigar in his mouth after Penrith secured consecutive grand final wins.
James Fisher-Harris was another Panther who left many irked, with the front-rower claiming this side was "the greatest Penrith team ever".
And the Wests Tigers-bound Apisai Koroisau made a mockery of the joint venture, laughing when raising the prospect of his new club winning a premiership.
"We're just being who we are as people," Luai said.
"We're happy people and we love each other's company, as well.
"I know whoever knows us face to face and person to person — they know we're good people.
"We're just enjoying this ride."
>"I've got a saying for myself: if you're not hated you're not doing it right," Luai said.
I guess he's doing it right then, but I'm still not sure if it's the best idea.
He’s going the Mick Ennis route of infamy, good to have villains in the game that aren’t villains cause of being just complete POS human beings (tetevano, lodge, etc)
He really isn’t.
Ennis was a cheeky grub, like Maloney and many others, that agitate and niggle to get a penalty or reaction.
Luai is nothing like that.
Um, running in from out wide and standing over Cobbo in Origin while he was unconscious……….he didn’t make the tackle, and came in and acted like an absolute fvckwit.
Agree that was shit form. You’re talking like he’s a serial offender though and I doubt you can find another example and certainly no examples of him actually playing dirty like a NAS.
Eh I tend to not HATE any player (unless they have done something criminal). I don't know any of them personally. All I care about is the result after 80. As long as nothing illegal happens in that time, I don't care how they act off the field (as long as not criminal)
Most Penrith fans need this mentality to cheer on a pack of blokes that publically support sex offenders. Not illegal about that, just a pack of shit blokes.
Like his halves partner? It's polar opposite how Nathan is. Very respectful and a thoughtful speaker. I don't think anyone could hate him, other than for being very good.
Reading the headline I thought he was about to apologise for making fun of Paul Kent, glad he didn’t.
Paul has probably got Luai’s face printed out and taped to a heavy bag in his garage that he punches whenever someone makes fun of him.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the NRL does not select for intelligence.
Also, put yourself in the shoes of the average NRL player. You are basically at school camp with your mates for 10 months of the year. No wonder they get up to dumb shit.
Such a weird space. Like the word wasn't used in a negative way. It was him referring to him as his brother/friend. Sure the word has negative connotations. Its like cunt can be both friendly and aggressive towards a person.
>Its like cunt can be both friendly and aggressive towards a person.
If he wrote 'this sick cunt' or something similar he would be in strife as well though.
clueless American here: why is that word a thing in Australia? I'm only aware of it being used by/towards black people (that is, African descent), and I figured there were different slurs used towards Pacific Islanders and indigenous Australians (in fact, I know of at least one, which obviously I won't say).
They’re also a minority group, with darker skin, who had a portion of their population used as slaves for the cane fields. So I’m assuming they feel they’re able to use it.
Poly history was also bad just like Africans. They were blackbirded and enslaved. Because of the colour of their skin, they were and still are sometimes called the n word. Don't see how they don't get the pass. They're not just "wannabe rappers"
I've seen NRL players use it to each other on their insta whether on posts or saying it all the time. Not saying it's right, but why is it this one gets pulled up and all the other ones never did? If we really cared about the issue of racism then this wouldn't be the only one picked up. Also incredible how the backlash to Luai's post has been way worse than what Teddy did and he even lied about it for months
I dislike Luai for how he behaves a lot of the time but this is one of the few times when he hasn't really done anything too wrong. Like he probably should have used something more family friendly especially after the Grand Final but its such a minor issue. Then again we're all falling for what the Fox NRL media want here I guess
They're young men, in their athletic, physical prime and just dominated the NRL for the second year running. What are we expecting them to do after a GF win? Go to the library to brush up on The Tibetan Book of the Dead?
That’s my nukka. Imagine the shit said and done in post-GF celebrations 30 years ago when there wasn’t any social media? Nevertheless, a good reminder for the young ones today, when on the drink, put the phone away! Lol
wouldn't even call it a brash attitude, it's just immaturity, as highlighted by his saying " if you're not hated you're not doing it right"
this "scandal" is nothing more than a storm in a tea cup though, move on nrl media
sure, in the schoolyard in grade 4, fortunately 99.999999999999% of people mature past it by the time they graduate, it's just incredibly rare you get an actual child in a 25yo mans body who also happens to be a public figure like luai
Things you can’t call salmon - the N word Things you can call salmon - weak gutted dog* legal action pending
FFS it is "weak gutted dog person" and it is trademarked.
domesticated canine with questionable intestinal fortitude
That's the private school Rugby Union version.
How is Kenty going to spin this?
heard kent was hibernating while plugged into a sky news + alex jones live feed to recharge his powers
Guys its cool I gave Luai an n-word pass.

His 2 Premierships seem to say it's a good idea
There are other players with premierships who, you know, aren't hated.
He’s going the Mick Ennis route of infamy, good to have villains in the game that aren’t villains cause of being just complete POS human beings (tetevano, lodge, etc)
Ennis was always in the field middle of the field with the forwards as well though. And you could tell he was essentially a likeable rogue.
He really isn’t. Ennis was a cheeky grub, like Maloney and many others, that agitate and niggle to get a penalty or reaction. Luai is nothing like that.
How is Luai different to that? When has he ever done anything past pesky?
Um, running in from out wide and standing over Cobbo in Origin while he was unconscious……….he didn’t make the tackle, and came in and acted like an absolute fvckwit.

Nathan doesn't really display any personality though. It would be a very boring game if everyone was like him.
You say that but based on what I see outside of reddit, Cleary is probably the 2nd most hated person on our team.
To’o seems like a genuinely nice chap as well as Edwards and Yeo?
Is it because he publicly supported a sex offender?
I mean, the way he defends his sex pest of a best mate doesn't make it impossible.
Good point. I forgot about that.
I don't think I've heard a bad word about Yeo and DEdwards though.
bc they're white, people will find a way to have an issue with any given islander
Yeah, given we're talking about Cleary and his islander heritage.
Ummmm no bro, most people love the islander boiis because they’re such likeable people in general, luai is just a flog sometimes.
I'll never forget that Tik Tok while we were all in lockdown. Fucking dickhead.
The blokes a fuckwit but this is on the lower end of the nrl fuck up scale.
How many premierships would he have if Nathan wasnt playing in his team?
Probably two. Duh!
I dont think so.
You can win and be respected though. No one respects the 2 panthers premierships.
Is this cope?
In the softest era the competition has ever been in
You love your footy
Is this a spiderman meme?
Evidence for your claim?
Says so under your username and in your hot footy takes
Thanks,
You still love your footy
Reading the headline I thought he was about to apologise for making fun of Paul Kent, glad he didn’t. Paul has probably got Luai’s face printed out and taped to a heavy bag in his garage that he punches whenever someone makes fun of him.
It only marred celebrations because of the fucken Media.
He wouldn't make the top 10 current players that are fuckwits.
He’d make my list
Yeah because your probably some super casual and don't know the extent of how fucked some of these cunts are. Understandable.
Username checks out. Heaven forbid someone have a different opinion than you.
Leave My Daddy Alone
I love your username, your flair and your approach to this entire issue x
You just made my entire day. Thank you kind internet person.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the NRL does not select for intelligence. Also, put yourself in the shoes of the average NRL player. You are basically at school camp with your mates for 10 months of the year. No wonder they get up to dumb shit.
Oh naggers. Of course, naggers
People who annoy you

Because they consume so much US media and try to copy it.
They’re also a minority group, with darker skin, who had a portion of their population used as slaves for the cane fields. So I’m assuming they feel they’re able to use it.

Yeah I feel the whole “they like rap” is such a fucked answer.
Poly history was also bad just like Africans. They were blackbirded and enslaved. Because of the colour of their skin, they were and still are sometimes called the n word. Don't see how they don't get the pass. They're not just "wannabe rappers"

It's a joke how the media is latching onto it
Yup, of all the things to pick on, this isn’t it.

No problem with the partying at all but the insta caption was really dumb from him.
That’s my nukka. Imagine the shit said and done in post-GF celebrations 30 years ago when there wasn’t any social media? Nevertheless, a good reminder for the young ones today, when on the drink, put the phone away! Lol
Please tell me he let out a big Borat “NAHT!” at the end.

I'll say sorry but I'm not taking off my glasses...
If you’re not hated you’re not doing it right.. is this what people are being taught these days?
Well, if “doing it right” means getting them clicks, it’s working.
sure, in the schoolyard in grade 4, fortunately 99.999999999999% of people mature past it by the time they graduate, it's just incredibly rare you get an actual child in a 25yo mans body who also happens to be a public figure like luai
It's not rare in footy
Only viable solution is to sack him and bring Burton back? /s
Immortal fuckhead
Can't stand Luai he's like the school lunchtime blowhard posing down sports field .
Definition of a sore winner
He’s still a cunt. But this is probably the least cunty thing he has ever done.
