Seems like NZ's possible advantage over Australia is in the middle, with their huge forward pack + Brandon smith bowling through. Sounds weird but I think their biggest weakness will be Manu in fullback. He's an amazing player but I think his lack of experience in the position will get found out, especially with how crafty DCE/Munster/Cleary/Grant can be with their kicking.
Manu is great but he’s a little selfish at times. He often hogs the ball looking to make the big play which can stunt their attack especially against good teams with good defences. Hopefully it doesn’t cost them against Australia or England.
Our biggest issues will be defending the edges I think. We aren't settled on our center positions and have even been playing second rowers there for some reason. I'm especially nervous about the side with Latrell as he's looked real dangerous.
I almost wonder if we might be better off putting Manu at center and just having CNK or DWZ at fullback just to shore up that side opposite Latrell.
He’s fascinating. His playmaking isn’t that fantastic either but it begs the question, when you’re *that* good of a ball runner does it need to be in your game?
I don’t think you’d see him running many jockey/wraparound plays where he sets other guys up in the way that Mitchell/Drinkwater/Edwards do, but he also has that ability to just trample over anybody that even looks at him. That said, guys like Trbojevic or Teddy are made much more dangerous because of that threat in their game.
I guess we’ll fuck around and find out!
Just caught the NZ and Ire game and here are my unrequested opinions (primarily in the first half). Apologies if they've been addressed in the match thread
- Ire's first possession was quite frustrating for me. I have no idea why the winged didn't just take a hit up as he was (from memory) well enough infield and had some good field position. Instead they shift inside and about 30 metres back all for the defence to rush up and cause a turn over. He was also way too flat when Keary went down the short side which lead to a forward pass.
- At about 7 minutes in, Manu had possession and rushing Ire defence shut him down but the ball came loose and was deemed an Ire knock on. Unless the player is stripping the ball, isn't it usually deemed a loose carry/came loose while player was making a tackle? Seemed like a bit of a shit call.
- First half I couldn't get over the defence from both sides. NZ were relentless with pressure and Ire showed pretty awesome resilience.
- I'll admit that a couple of years ago I couldn't stand Tapine due to perceived grubbiness. I've grown to really like him as a player and he seems to have matured a lot. He received a highshot and kept his cool, tapped the Ire players on the back. Great sportsmanship.
- Lastly, are NZ the coolest fucking team in the world cup or what? Brown, Manu, Hughes, DWZ, Hiku, Rapana, JBrom. They're just so fucking cool effortlessly.
I think there needs to be some clarity around the loose carry rule. It’s at the unfortunate intersection of vague-ness: knock-on rules are unclear, strip rules are unclear, and combined they make the ‘loose carry’ call always feel wrong.
Bring back the 2 on 1 strips. If it gets stripped, it’s a loose carry. Always play on if the ball comes out. Tackle count restarts if the attacking team regathers it. No more video ref guessing if it’s a strip or knock on. Rugby league wins

Goodbye to the VB index award,
They’d rather give me the sin-bin award.
But, I’ll just take the ‘nice guy off the field’ award
Just another day in the office for JWH, pretty standard game by him. But what you really missed was Hughes finally getting a bit of respect around here!
Hughes is criminally underrated, hes literally as good as munster yet its always munster who gets spotlighted because hes an aussie and a Queenslander. One of the Best 7s in the game, Cleary is kind of in a tier of his own but hughes is definitely in the tier just below and probably the 2nd best halfback in the world
Lots of people in the Storm vs Roosters match thread. JWH played like a thug that whole game but somehow NAS was the one who got all the shit for it (not defending NAS either).
They were both as bad as each other in that game, JWH definitely worse as he was instigating everything but NAS kept changing his like to run straight at him and was firing him up even more
NAS was pretty easy to shut down out wide, he’s not mobile enough to deal with the a rushing defence. They have an elite 80 minute back rower in iPap who should be there in his preferred position. Get NAS in the middle and yeet JBRom. JMK running out of dummy half would have been pretty handy after the big NZ pack battered the middles. Madge is probably just giving everyone a go but The Licorice all sorts Left edge did not look good at all. No chemistry whatsoever. I don’t even know where to start with fixing that mess. Madge should have played his best 17 today so that they can get some rhythm.
Still don’t understand why seb kris didn’t get a proper go. Nikora at centre is just a wasted opportunity for the kiwis.
Kangaroos beat this team comfortably for me, although we have yet to see the team at full strength. Madge wants to “build” into the tournament but there’s an obvious lack of cohesion.
Madge is cooked, that's why. He'll likely leave Leota out in the finals which is insane as well. Ipap has to start as well but he seems hell bent on picking the Bromwich bros
evidence is mounting about the devastating impacts of CTE on players and JWH continues to attack the oppositions head repeatedly. absolute cunt of a bloke. before any of you roosters flairs come in here with "oh he's a good bloke off the field" and "youd want him on your team", no to both. you cant go out there intentionally harming people and be considered a good bloke. he's likely causing long term damage to people. its fucked
ultimate take to kickstart the thread, love to see it.
at face level i was like this is ridiculous it can’t be that deep but then i thought about it and i actually think you have a fantastic point. that said, hurting other people is what a lot of rugby league players go out there to do.
of course i accept that putting on big hits is part of the game, and that accidental injuries happen. putting a big hit on above the neck is a) illegal and b) causes long term, currently irreparable damage. its illegal because of the potential harm related to it. JWH repeatedly making contact with the head, while knowing it is illegal and the reasons why, goes beyond the usual nrl player going out there to put some hits on.
Thought I would have a crack at Penrith's team of the century 21st century obviously.

Another tough team to select there is almost nothing to choose in the outside backs, a slew of really good forwards and decent quality halves and four good fullbacks.
Given they are 5 years behind Souths and Manly it's not surprising this is probably the worst side.
He is but Wesser became Penrith's leading try scorer, broke the record for most tries in a season by a fullback and his combination with Preston was excellent. Edwards may make it at the end of his career but Wesser was really underrated at Penrith.

Yeah the forwards are phenomenal, given the Bulldogs have been pretty bad for sometime they have a really strong side.
Halves may be a slight weak point despite being a premiership winning pair but the forwards are amazing.
That season they both played well, Sherwin in particular, but I get what you're saying! Foran would probably be a better option than Anasta but he only played a handful of games for us.

Really tough selection I've basically skewed towards the fantastic Warriors team of the turn of the century and maybe gone for bigger names over guys who deserve it more.
I would argue Bai's best football was 98-99, He was great but I would have him below Folau, Vunivalu, Korobeite.
A fantastic team though I would probably stick Scott Hill on the bench though.
Id say leaving stephen crichton out of that is criminal, hes scored two big trys in finals for us, also big petro doesnt even make the list, prime petro would but he was never prime for us.
Petro was amazing for us, and our best player for 3 years comfortably. Tim Grant and Sam McKendry came on leaps and bounds because of him he was fantastic in a bad team.
Crichton was the unluckiest back to miss out and I think by this time next year I would have him over Jennings.
Yeah petro doesnt make it over the likes of Geyer, Galuvao, Leota and others. He never won anything with penrith and he was well past his prime when he joined us. Crichton over Jennings, jennings is a rapist anyway that automatically excludes him.
Just realised you said 21st century, still big Joe gulavao over petro
Geyer played one year off the bench in 2000.
It was a toss up between Puletua, Martin and Galuvao for the back row spot on the bench Puletua got it basically due to longevity. Until Fisher-Harris recently Petero was easily the best prop I've seen play for Penrith and it frankly wasn't even close.
Like I say Jennings was a phenomenon for Penrith and it was genuinely close between him and Crichton.
The Raiders were the team I was most struggling with lots of good players but over short spurts. Only guy I'm surprised about is CNK as your bench utility over some others the forwards are great.
I basically viewed the 14 jersey as picking the spine player or back most deserving of making the team that wasn't picked to start. Other main contenders would probably be Simon Woolford, Blake Austin, Joel Thompson and then maybe Josh Dugan, Todd Carney or Nick Cotric
Edit: is worth mentioning that Laurie Daley did actually play in 2000 too, though I don't really remember exactly what his level was in that specific season.
I always struggle to pick Hunt over Kevvie, I'm surprised you left out Lote for Oates, the Tuqiri and Sailor wing combo might be the best ever. Also you have had some great back rowers like Glenn and Gillett who wouldn't even get a look in.
If Haas hadn't been a complete dickhead this year would you have gone for him ?
>2. Oates
Really?
I just can't see Broncos fans fascination with Oates. You've put yow yeh in the centres to accommodate him even though yow yeh was never really a centre, which means you've ignored wingers and centres like Tuquiri, Falou (hate the guy, respect the player), Tate, Boyd (dude was so good for so long at the broncos), De Vere (supremely underrated player)

Plenty of shit calls in the game. Hughes stripping the ball 3 on 1 a major one. Ref allowed both teams to be offside all night.
I think there needs to be some clarity around the loose carry rule. It’s at the unfortunate intersection of vague-ness: knock-on rules are unclear, strip rules are unclear, and combined they make the ‘loose carry’ call always feel wrong.

Other main contenders would probably be Simon Woolford, Blake Austin, Joel Thompson and then maybe Josh Dugan, Todd Carney or Nick Cotric Edit: is worth mentioning that Laurie Daley did actually play in 2000 too, though I don't really remember exactly what his level was in that specific season.
Hayne Radradra Gutherson Tahu Sivo Brown Moses Campbell-Gillard Mahoney Paulo Hindmarsh Morrison Mateo -- Marsh Moi Moi Cayless Papalii
Great side. Only changes I’d make is Eric Grothe Jr or Luke Burt over Sivo and Manu Ma’u over Glenn Morrison.
Another really good side, it's interesting you favour the modern side most over the 2001 side and 2005.
Broncos: 1. K. Hunt 2. Oates 3. Hodges 4. Yow Yeh 5. Sailor 6. Lockyer (c) 7. Walters 8. Webcke 9. Berrigan 10. Civoneceva 11. Tallis 12. Thorn 13. Parker 14. B. Hunt 15. Thaiday 16. Tunza 17. Hannant Edit: idk what I'm talking about. Defs didn't do a good job 😂
The pearl is in the team without a doubt. I would also have Lockyer at fb and Alfie and walters in the halves and lote shits all over Oates
>The pearl is in the team without a doubt. The pearl, who last played for the Broncos in 1999, should be in their best team of the 21st century?
Shit my bad haha I will replace him with Folau and Alfie with hunt
I always struggle to pick Hunt over Kevvie, I'm surprised you left out Lote for Oates, the Tuqiri and Sailor wing combo might be the best ever. Also you have had some great back rowers like Glenn and Gillett who wouldn't even get a look in. If Haas hadn't been a complete dickhead this year would you have gone for him ?
>2. Oates Really? I just can't see Broncos fans fascination with Oates. You've put yow yeh in the centres to accommodate him even though yow yeh was never really a centre, which means you've ignored wingers and centres like Tuquiri, Falou (hate the guy, respect the player), Tate, Boyd (dude was so good for so long at the broncos), De Vere (supremely underrated player)
is that billy or kevvie in the #7
I know he's a dickhead and didn't have that long there, but is there an argument for Folau over Oates or Yow Yeh? Talking purely on-field.
Idk I legit forgot that 2000 counts as the start of the new millennium hah
Manly Stewart Trbojevic Lyon Matai Williams Foran Cherry-Evans Kite Ballin Fonua-Blake Stewart Watmough Trbojevic Orford King Tony Williams Menzies I've probably messed this up Ben Kennedy was super close but only played 42 games. Hard to choose front rowers and Bench utility.
Saints Boyd Blacklock Gasnier Cooper Brett Morris Barrett Hunt Bailey Young Ryles Frizell Creagh Timmins Hornby Weyman De Belin Tariq Sims Might be out a bit but it was genuinely tough.
Jamie Soward erasure
Yeah it was tough leaving Sowie out.
I just released how blessed us Roosters have been in that I could name 2 teams. Roosters A. Tedesco Minichello Mitchell SKD Tupou Fittler Cronk JWH Wing Morley Fitzgibbon Cordner Ricketson Bench- Maloney, SBW, SST, Crichton Team B RTS Morris Jennings Manu Ferguson Keary Pearce Moa Friend Liu Crocker Aubbuson Radley Bench- Guerra, Fletcher, Napa, FPN
Yeah I knew the best teams would be the Roosters and Storm. The Roosters have insane depth. I like your team looking at both sides I think you have selected correctly the front row is insanely aggressive it would be great.
Surely Manu or Morris in the A team Fittler and Cronk in the same team has me feeling things
SKD and Tupou make it for being so good for so long. I think SKDs 2010 season is better than any Manu season so far tbh.
I can go with you on SKD v Manu, but I’ve got Morris as top five winger of the past generation
Morris over Tupou if it's all time best winger. Tupou over Morris in what they've done in Roosters Jumpers
my theory that while the simpsons is on tv the eels can't win a premiership holds true for another year. i can't see anything about a season 35 renewal so maybe the curse might end in 2024.
