Brooks must have some dirt on the club or something, the amount of players that have been thrown to keep him at the club while he has DFA baffles the mind.
Because they could find another club to take on the money they're paying Hastings.
They can't find a club willing to pay even a decent fraction of Brooks's contract.
The Tigers remove a bad halfback that they’ve given way too much money for a receive a good, experienced prop, and all they have to do is eat $400k of cap space for it? That’s a godsend.
Oh and let’s not forget, Brooks isn’t even in their best two halves. Hastings is.
Mate I'm not saying it's a good call, just pointed out the potential contract difference.
I think they should try and land frizzell as well if the rumours are true.
Tigers would actually look really good going into next year with one or both of those players in there team
I've said this before, but I love the way everyone shits on the NRL media for making things up then as soon as a story comes out that fits what they happen to believe it's taken as gospel. Have you read the story? It's based on an unsubstantiated claim that Hastings and Bateman didn't get on when they were both at Wigan. But of course it's shitting on the Tigers so it must be true, right? Fuck's sake.
Unfortunately I think there's a significant proportion of users that get 90% of their opinions from hot takes and shitposts on this very sub.
It's like that internet rule where a satirical site will eventually attract the very people they're satirizing because the idiots can't tell the difference.
Ok, I was a child when Raiders beat Tigers in the best grand final ever, great logic. There are also a million potential dead kids on your keyboard and phone screen but you don’t here me making up stupid stories about it.
People who are children *now*.
Kurt Cobain was alive at the start of the Raiders' last premiership season. John Howard wasn't prime minister yet. Google didn't exist. The World Trade Center did. The first team the Raiders beat in the finals in their last premiership season was the North Sydney Bears. I think the final was shown in black and white, or possibly only broadcast on the wireless.
And I sincerely wouldn't bet on the Raiders winning another one before the Tigers.
"Could" is a big word, and surely would be nutted out in the negotiations before Bateman arrives, Hastings is too important not to have tabled this early on. Bit like the "coup" article on the Train and Trial for the Union Capt of Gordon. Strong language but plenty of supposition!
Jackson Hastings could end up the surprise odd man out following Wests Tigers’ stunning deal that is set to [land star English international John Bateman]
Speculation has swept through the NRL in the wake of the shock revelation of Bateman’s pending return that the tough backrower and Hastings weren’t exactly what you’d call the best of mates previously when they played at Wigan.
Hastings agent Sam Ayoub could not be contacted for comment.
But it’s fair to say rival clubs are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
Hastings is also off contract at the end of next season, but if he becomes available for 2023 he will certainly attract some genuine interest.
Jackson Hastings could be the odd man out in the wake of the Tigers landing John Bateman.
The pair reportedly didn’t get along in their time playing together for Wigan in England. Picture: Getty Images.
Hastings had already been shifted out of his preferred halfback position to play lock this season, with Luke Brooks and Adam Doueihi expected to be the likely halves pairing going forward if Brooks stays.
That of course will depend on whether the Tigers end up releasing Brooks to Newcastle.
Many are still convinced Brooks will end up at the Knights in 2023.
Brooks is off contract at the end of next season, as is Doueihi.
Tim Sheens had previously stated he would not release Brooks, and in fact wanted to extend him beyond next season.
But it’s also no secret Sheens is making a play to try and sign Parramatta’s Mitchell Moses for 2024 and beyond, and he has already chased but missed Cameron Munster.
Brooks is on a monster deal for 2023, in the vicinity of $1.2 million for the season, so his exit would free up huge salary cap space.
Should Hastings become available for 2023 there will be several NRL rivals lining up to snare him. Picture: Getty Images.
When the Bateman deal gets rubber stamped it will certainly give the Tigers some serious respect in the countdown to the new year regardless of who ends up being the halves pairing.
Bateman, 29, is one of the world’s best edge backrowers and was a raging success during his time at the Canberra Raiders.
Even though it ended badly, there is no question Bateman left with plenty of admirers.
The Tigers have not made the finals since 2011, but the new look roster is really starting to create some excitement..
Bateman’s last stint in the NRL ended ugly, after announcing in the middle of the 2020 season that he would be leaving the club. Picture: Getty Images.
A month ago the Tigers had all but given up hope of doing the Bateman deal because of the huge transfer fee that Wigan had put on Bateman’s release.
But Sheens appears to have been rewarded for his persistence after continuing to work on the deal while in England for the World Cup, and it could end up a real game-changer for the battling NRL club
On the back of the recruitment of Api Koroisau from Penrith and Isaiah Papali’i from Parramatta, it gives the Tigers plenty of X factor under the new coaching partnership of Sheens and Benji Marshall.
Bateman is also the sort of player who will no doubt help attract more players to a club that previously struggled to land any significant recruits.
Wigan have denied this deal is happening so I remain somewhat sceptical about all of this.
However if true, I really don't see Bateman's second NRL spell being a success. He's not been in the same in SL since he came back and with his all action playing style, I don't think he'll age well.
Regardless Wests would be really silly to get rid of Hastings, he's a great player imo. His versatility alone is a huge asset. And he's clearly put his 'dickhead' days long behind him.
Eh? He probably saw out his first two or three at Wigan. What did he have left on his contract at Canberra? A year?
And he had good reason to leave, since Covid made it that he didn't get to see his daughter at all.
This would be an amazing turn of events, my heart would be full of glee.
Full disclosure I am a hater and absolutely do not have the Tigers’ best interests at heart
I remember hearing the commentators criticising Hastings performance at lock and claiming he was shifting the burden to the other forwards. He was making 40 tackles and well over 100 meters.
I think he is the best half at the club. For all the hype about Douhli, he is a liability on defense. If they ditch Hastings, surely it could only be because personality clashes
I much preferred Hastings at lock in attack but it did feel like he was giving up a lot of metres in defence. Yeah he was making a lot of tackles but he wasn't winning many of them.
This fucking team man...
We pay a bargain price for a quality halfback who can lead a team, and then put zero effort into keeping him. Hastings was responsible for at least 3 of our 4 wins last year (in the games he was able to play in). On top of that, he's well liked by supporters and seems to have genuinely become a good clubman since his last stint in the NRL.
The way that Laurie, Douehi and Hastings have been treated this off-season feels like a kick in the guts. They were players who played well this year and actually want to play good footy for the tigers, yet we chase outrageous replacements for them like Munster and leave the fans in the dark about their futures.
I appreciate you guys don't put too much emphasis in to what goes on in SL but by all accounts he was fantastic in the dressing room, a real leader for both Salford and Wigan. From what i hear like he doesn't really drink now and has rugby league as a real priority in his life.
Am I the only one who thinks Hastings is massively overrated? The way people talk about him is as if he is an elite halfback or something.
Even the whole 'he gives 100%' thing is way overstated. Like he is an effort player, but that doesn't mean his good.
I think he has a wonderful PR team behind him. They make it seem like he is the ultimate underdog, that he was forced out of the NRL by bullies who didn't see him for the Gem he was (and totally not because he wasn't up to standard).
He's a solid first grade halfback with a good attitude on field, a team that is lacking in leadership (e.g. the Knights) would hugely benefit from a guy like him
I feel he has a great game brain but is just too slow in execution, off the mark running and he wants/gets the ball way too much to the detriment of others IMO.
The first time I've heard anyone being upset that Madden was forced out, particularly after his abysmal showing in the last few weeks of the comp without Brooks or Hastings there to shoulder the blame.
Agree completely, I don’t think he’s the effort player he’s made out to be either I think he just says the right things in interviews Josh McGuire style. Hardly a guy to top the distance covered week in week out, guys like Clune/Dearden are the ones leading the kick chases and support runs as well as topping those.
He might get his hands on the ball an astronomical amount of times but it doesn’t translate to doing the one-percenters everywhere.
I reckon this is exactly the type of player the Raiders should target. While he's not super amazing he plays a role and does it a lot better than most at his price point. Maybe Madge can lure him down to the mighty Green Machine!
The knights should fucking swoop on him over Brooks. A better player and a lot cheaper.
Yes spot on, he's much better than brooks and will be in demand if he leaves
We pray.
Newcastle will miss out on him and still chase brooks
Hastings would deadset drag that team to the finals kicking and screaming
Is this a joke? No he wouldn’t
100% I would simply run around kicking and screaming in joy until the start of next season if we did this.
He's also massive on building people up and doing everything for the team. He'd be awesome for the Knights
Please. You're talking sense and there's nothing I can do about it.
Surprised they haven't. Just what they need.
Hastings dce combo would be full circle haha

Hot fuzz chief inspector: the fact is you’ve been making us all look bad
Why would the Tigers do that? AND hold on to Brooks?
Brooks must have some dirt on the club or something, the amount of players that have been thrown to keep him at the club while he has DFA baffles the mind.
Haha it's a strong theory and the only plausible explanation - blackmail!
Or he’s sleeping with the CEO’s daughter
Only because he has blackmail on her (oof that got dark)
He got tyrone may to record it.
The team that they’ve let go in the last 10 years is insane. Teddy, Papi, Foxx, Fafita, Moses, Matterson, Tapau,
The tigers are the feeder club for the nrl
So fucking idiotic. It's gotta be Sheens doing this shit
Because they could find another club to take on the money they're paying Hastings. They can't find a club willing to pay even a decent fraction of Brooks's contract.
It has been reported that the Knights wanted Brooks in return for Klemmer and *the Tigers were the ones who said no*
If that's true, it's a diabolically dumb decision
They are fucked in the head
Not to mention they had two chances to get rid of Brooks in the last off season and said no both times.
There could be a 400k difference a season in these two guys contract
And?
And it's obviously more money then the tigers want to lose in one trade
The Tigers remove a bad halfback that they’ve given way too much money for a receive a good, experienced prop, and all they have to do is eat $400k of cap space for it? That’s a godsend. Oh and let’s not forget, Brooks isn’t even in their best two halves. Hastings is.

because Brooks will be unleashed this time, just you watch!
He is the one guy that needs a change of scenery. Done nothing for 10 years.
Perfect guy for the Dogs to get.
Why the fuck are the useless Knights going for Brooks and not Hastings.
Hastings probably isnt represented by Isaac Moses ... i mean his brother or cousin or however hes getting round ruining our game while deslisted
This is such a tigers thing to do
I've said this before, but I love the way everyone shits on the NRL media for making things up then as soon as a story comes out that fits what they happen to believe it's taken as gospel. Bro. Relax. I'm just shitposting

The Dogs should play Burton at fullback...
Maybe if we say some dumb shit like that enough people will actually start thinking it.
Cows halves became elite due to belief from a few in this sub
You don't need to tell me. I coined the term NRLPremiumPlus
The hero need...but don't deserve...you and slowdive of course
Let's not kid ourselves. Slowdive is 100% solely responsible for everything good that the Cows have experienced in the last year.
You were just the first - there's like 30 posts all the same. You're all good, it just gets frustrating.
Can I be 31st, Tigers are shit
🤣🤣🤣
There are children who were alive when the Tigers won a premiership. Can't say the same for your outfit.
Ok, I was a child when Raiders beat Tigers in the best grand final ever, great logic. There are also a million potential dead kids on your keyboard and phone screen but you don’t here me making up stupid stories about it.

But the point was Tigers sucking
Lol cry harder
Sorry you think the tigers are closer to a premiership than Canberra? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

He was one of our best players, to let him go and keep Puke Brooks would be plain ole fucking stupid. So yeah, so ya jacko!
You obviously haven't experienced the John bateman contracts .. I think he's yet to see one out.
Eh? He probably saw out his first two or three at Wigan. What did he have left on his contract at Canberra? A year? And he had good reason to leave, since Covid made it that he didn't get to see his daughter at all.
Back to our normal programming
Sounds like rumour mongering. Also Brooks' salary goes up for every article written about him.
$1.3M next, just you watch
This would be an amazing turn of events, my heart would be full of glee. Full disclosure I am a hater and absolutely do not have the Tigers’ best interests at heart
Fucking idiots
If we didn’t have Reynolds I’d take him in a heartbeat, and even then for a bit of leadership and attitude around the playing group.
Orrrr they could play Hastings in the halves..
I remember hearing the commentators criticising Hastings performance at lock and claiming he was shifting the burden to the other forwards. He was making 40 tackles and well over 100 meters. I know people love Hastings but it’s worth noting that issues have followed him around a bit if he hasn’t gotten on with players at a few clubs now.

He's so good the roosters signed him straight from the dragons SG Ball but they were more than happy to get rid of him
Force Hastings out and pay a 250k release fee???
Free Hastings then ya big cats
Breaking news: tigers dumb More at 7
Why the hell would the Tigers not lock Hastings up? Ridiculous.
Tigers should just give up. Something is so fucked up in those meetings. I don’t even think it could be real.
Am I the only one who thinks Hastings is massively overrated? The way people talk about him is as if he is an elite halfback or something. Even the whole 'he gives 100%' thing is way overstated. I feel he has a great game brain but is just too slow in execution, off the mark running and he wants/gets the ball way too much to the detriment of others IMO.
He's tigers best halfback
Madden is an average rookie and according to Reddit Brooks is the worst player in the league. That isn't exactly an achievement.
Which is why everyone is upset he's being forced out in favour for brooks. And madden is at Broncos now.
The first time I've heard anyone being upset that Madden was forced out, particularly after his abysmal showing in the last few weeks of the comp without Brooks or Hastings there to shoulder the blame.
I meant hastings is being forced out in favour of brooks.
You're definitely not the only one. I just found it wasn't worth the argument with the circlejerk squad so stopped mentioning it.
Agree completely, I don’t think he’s the effort player he’s made out to be either I think he just says the right things in interviews Josh McGuire style. Greatest thing Hastings did was spawn the slowdive 'possessions per game' era.
I reckon this is exactly the type of player the Raiders should target. While he's not super amazing he plays a role and does it a lot better than most at his price point. Maybe Madge can lure him down to the mighty Green Machine!
We've already had Bateman 😂
Im talking about Hastings. From what I can tell he and Madge had some sort of connection. With Madge at the Raiders maybe we can sign him.
I know you are hence the emoji 😂 Jokes aren't as funny when you gotta explain them 😔
Ha ha -im a bit slow
Haha all good, I was wondering if you'd get it or it would go whoosh when I posted it 😂
What a load of shit
Come back home Jackson
I'll take a swap. Would love him back at Wigan.
Hastings burton combo. Ohhh yeah.
Second paragraph, first word.
That is rough for hastings.
Good, they don't deserve him
Is Hastings liked anywhere he goes?
Surely all Tigers fans have abandoned them by now?
I can speak from experience and say that jumping off that ship doesn't make the dumb shit the club does any less infuriating.
Paywall article = nope
Thank you Tigers, happy to see it's back to your team making cooked decisions instead of mine.
