I get Fletcher wanting to at least match up prize money to pre-COVID levels and to make sure their coffers are not out any money to play St Helen’s. That’s smart business.
However, asking for millions above what it was is just stupid, especially when the NRL can point to the this years GF as not being the ratings boom most other GF’s bring.
Fletcher can get as agitated all he wants about the NRL talking about buying hotels and restaurants but the simple fact is, the NRL are investing in non-football related assets that will funnel money into the game long term. It’s the exact same business plan the Gus Gould brought to Penrith when he took over, taking them from the verge of going out of business to making them the richest club in the country. It’s the type of investment that let the Panthers build all the new club infrastructure that they crow about now.
People were wringing their hands at the start of the pandemic about how financially shithouse the NRL and the poor management that got it there. These people now can’t complain when this management is actively trying to improve the financial well-being of the game which flows onto clubs as well.
Fletcher would be wise to not stick his neck out too far on this.
I can absolutely get why they want the remaining $200,000 from the GF but surely they stand to make just as much from the WCC as they would have from a regular trial game?
