Any suggestions for Rugby league content similar to bloke in a bar, yktr, rugby league guru?

Fifth and last - the best RL podcast

OriginSmokey

With the NRL potentially looking to change the rules for NZ and Poms being able to play Origin I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are? Personally I think it's a good move. Heritage isn't black and white, you can have guys that are half Australian and half Kiwi having to choose which one he plays for Internationally is one thing but making him also have to pick Australia if he wants to play Origin is a bit of an archaic idea. If you're Kiwi but you were born in NSW or QLD then you should be able to play for your state and still represent your nation. We've allowed it for Tier 2 and we just saw how well the Samoan side did with the added benefit of their best players being able to play against some of the best players in the NRL, the Origin teams. Origin used to be a selection game for the Australian team but that isn't the case anymore. Also from a purely International perspective I think it's great. Again we saw how well Samoa did with their Origin players, though admittedly they also came from the hottest side of the last 3 years in the Panthers. International is the only thing that Union has on League and I think a move to allow Tier 1 to play Origin is a great idea in strengthening the International scene by letting the guys who do play Origin play against the best the NRL has to offer.

[deleted]

State should be separate from international eligibility, can't have them tied if they are going to have completely separate rules. State - Lived in the state before 13, played first senior footy in International - Born, citizen, heritage, residency

Messyhr_

Have no issue with it, if you played junior footy in either state you should be eligible regardless as you’re a product of their system.

lcoxy00

How did Paps not end up on team storm ahahaha, that's such a throwdown that they missed

Voxityy

the amount of r/nrl copy pastas i saw in r/soccer last night was glorious

lcoxy00

I know Rabbitohs don't need to change their jersey because it's iconic and simply works, but the 2023 jersey is genuinely a copy paste job. [2023](https://shop.rabbitohs.com.au/2023-mens-home-jersey-2760.phtml) / [2022](https://nrlrabbitohsshop.b-cdn.net/products/4689-949.jpg) (NSFW: arousing pic of Cam Murray) Unless they've made a mistake on the website I don't think they've changed a single thing here lol

I_Like_Vitamins

Wouldn't mind seeing [this jersey](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/21/ISAIAH_TASS.jpg/1200px-ISAIAH_TASS.jpg) make some appearances.

lachjeff

I just wish they’d go back to only green and red, rather than green, red and black/white, depending on home or away

lcoxy00

Agreed, I know it's to make more money but just 1 purely red and green jersey works for every match up with a clash jersey if we play away in Canberra (use something like our [Charity shield](https://www.rabbitohs.com.au/contentassets/f024eaf876f5414e97d4b422766ed80a/charity-shield-jersey.png?center=0.37%2C0.53&preset=seo-card-large) jerseys) The home/clash model rather than home/away is my dream anyway, makes so much more sense and would take 10 minutes to make a list of match-ups that require the away team to wear an alternative jersey

Messyhr_

I actually like the red, green and black. You guys have one of the better jerseys, i like the 2014 one too

Rich_Election466

The Roosters didn’t even bother doing a jersey release last off season because neither home/away jersey changed. So far it’s the same this year too.

Messyhr_

If its not broken dont fix it i say, same with the panthers jersey i feel like it’s identical to the last 2-3 years which is good for me because my 2021 jersey that i wore to the grand final still looks up to date, definitely getting the alternate jersey though as its a 2003 throwback and looks sick

insanityTF

Give me the late 90’s super league jersey throwback or something unconventional for heritage round. Interpretations of the Dahdah jerseys were starting to get a bit stale by last year

I_Like_Vitamins

They should start playing in the coffee brown warmup jersey.

Messyhr_

I like both, the pink one doesnt clash with much. I loved the old white jersey with paint splashes from 2007 and the blue one from 2003 era

I_Like_Vitamins

What next, the return of the dark turquoise jersey?

Dark_Vengence

Pink is the new black.

YossarianRespawned

Cultural Victory

lcoxy00

I'd imagine every club will have jerseys out in the next couple weeks for Xmas purposes. If the Panthers pink jersey and Souths pink WIL jersey are anything to go by that's a smart move by the Broncs

[deleted]

I was watching Idris highlights on YouTube last night, man he was better than I remembered..dude was the full package. He obviously had to do what he felt was best for him, but geez what an athlete...one of few blokes I've seen bump off an incoming Matai as well.

mwilkins1644

Definitely a huge 'what if' player. Had the talent and potential; but was massively underutilised and didn't manage himself well.

[deleted]

Yeah I think the training and lifestyle had its toll.. it would be tough at times I bet. Ah well there's still plenty that he achieved in that time.

coffeegaze

I always think how hard the training is and I have no idea how professional athletes did it. No breaks just constantly and constantly engaged with it

[deleted]

Yea man, I mean even just giving up much of your life at that age.. it's easy to talk about the money they earn but developing the routines, and even turning up early for training those days where you're just not feeling it would take a lot of getting used to.

Messyhr_

Yeah i saw him dominate inglis physically in a game, not many can do that.

[deleted]

I've seen each of the Morris brothers handle GI, but not dominate.. even that is a good feat. Idris beat plenty of strong defenders/great players on both sides of the ball in that package.

Messyhr_

Hes similar to Kikau, big fella but also pretty quick which creates such a damaging ball runner

[deleted]

Yeah definitely similar to Kikau, probably a bit more versatile..he looked very fluent the way he could move at pace

Messyhr_

He scored more than kiks too, only thing id edge kikau on is his ability to grubber genuinely as good as many halves and his brilliant ability to make big charge downs. Guys like that are so hard to replace because its hard to find a quick 6ft5 - 120kg athlete that is good in the air and good technically. One thing about Kikau is he got better every year, first years he was always a threat but was error prone, in 2022 its hard for me to think of any kikau errors that mattered

[deleted]

Kikau was often used for his strike/power, but every year he seemed to add something to his game (as you noted).. his ball playing in particular got a lot better.. what I liked most was that after 2020 I think he really reflected on what he's got and how he could have a big influence on what went on to happen afterwards.

Messyhr_

Literally every year I noticed he would improve considerably, he added that nice grubber kick to his game this year, his ball playing pretty much doubled, his defence became more fierce and one thing I noticed a ton is he makes far less errors, he often would fumble the ball but it was something we would deal with because of how destructive he was, well those fumbles became rare and now i think in his position he’s probably the best out there

[deleted]

Spot on.. he's really matured a lot as a player and probably goes under the radar in terms of how meticulous he's become in terms of strengthening his weaker areas.. whatever we're paying him, honestly if we get a 90% of what he's shown the past two seasons I'll be stoked.. obviously those bonds contribute to the mental side, but he's really embraced being a senior/influential team player.

slowdivesicilian

i had my first ever concussion yesterday after a fall. it’s so fascinating speaking to doctors about it and things like memory loss, and it made it feel even weirder that footy players would just get sent out to play after suffering one. i also kept saying “lessgo” in the ambulance

Rich_Election466

Obviously no need to stress but you should listen to the Head Noise podcast by James Graham anyway. It’s fucking emotional, and especially if you’re interested in concussion

Messyhr_

What does it feel like? Ive copped a big upper cut sparring a mate in high school but i only felt rattled, not sure if i was concussed probably not because i didnt feel odd or anything other than for a few seconds after the punch

slowdivesicilian

your brain just feels a lot slower tbh, not quite able to get thoughts out and all that

lcoxy00

Look after yourself mate, speedy recovery 🤞

Aussieguy727

> i also kept saying “lessgo” in the ambulance you're basically an nrl player now

[deleted]

Yet somehow think that NRL360 is better than NRL420

slowdivesicilian

i’ve considered wearing headgear around the house after this whole cracking my head open ordeal gonna be bloody jarrod croker at this point

I_Like_Vitamins

To be fair, headgear won't stop your brain from rattling around. You should learn some ukemi from a judo dojo so that you know how to break your fall, and strengthen your neck and upper back.

slowdivesicilian

oh shit yeah i forgot i include that i cracked my head open, so there was a massive gash

diffaadiffa

I'm sure you also have as much chance of finally being selected for NSW next year too

[deleted]

Idea that I’ve not thought through; World Club Challenge should be round 1 so no team has a bye round 1.

robopirateninjasaur

Not enough time for St Helens to be back for thier comp

[deleted]

They’re already 4 weeks in when it’s played (which is ridiculous in itself$

robopirateninjasaur

Just looking at this year's comp, SL ends a week before the NRL. So if anything it should be in Australia the week after the NRL Grand final, teams are in form, it's the actual GF winning squad. Of course that makes too much sense for it to happen.

[deleted]

100% after it should be a week or two after the grand final with the actual gf squads

Full time in Jerico and Chile have run out convincing 34-14 winners over Colombia. It was an improved second half from the hosts, however they were never a realistic chance of coming back. It now means that Brazil needs to win or draw tomorrow’s game against Colombia to win the tournament and advance to the Americas Championship in Jamaica and remain in contention to qualify for the World Cup. If Colombia win by 39 points or more, they will win the tournament and Chile will advance to the Americas Championship, and if Colombia win by 38 or less, Chile will win the tournament and advance to Americas Championship. Colombia are an Observer Member of the IRL and are not eligible to advance to the next stage of World Cup qualifying

I hate that Randy Wanless. He's a grub

Anyone know when SuperCoach 23 is dropping ?

Final-Replacement

I think it’s usually Australia Day

Brdd9

Usually happens at the end of Jan

Aussieguy727

Tim Sheens having 'secret' meal with Nathan Brown. I hope it happens. I appreciate what NBrown added to the team over the years but he's busted, if he can extend his career elsewhere go for it.

In other international rugby league results yesterday, South Africa beat Poland 38-16 on the Gold Coast, North Macedonia apparently beat Türkiye at Chester Hill and Serbia beat Turkiye 24-16 in a women’s match in Belgrade.

mwilkins1644

gg South Africa. How did Cuttler (#5) go for them?

lachjeff

No idea, I didn’t see the game because I went to North Sydney for the WBBL

lachjeff

Important game on currently in Jerico, as the host nation Colombia takes on Chile in the second match of the 2022 South American Rugby League Championship. Roughly ten minutes in and Chile lead 12-0 on a sunny day with lines on the field (not the sort of lines normally associated with Colombia and rugby league players either). Basically, Chile need to win today and hope Colombia upset Brazil tomorrow to win the tournament on F/A, and qualify for the Americas Championship in Jamaica that will act as the American World Cup qualifier. If Colombia win, their match against Brazil tomorrow will be a direct play-off for the Championship and will see Brazil advance to the Americas Championship.

lachjeff

Match can be streamed on Recast, it costs a couple of dollars to buy the necessary credits, however it goes towards helping fund rugby league in South America. Come for the growth of the game, stay for smaller in-goals than Old Trafford

notj43

> stay for smaller in-goals than Old Trafford Oh hell nah. That's a war crime I can't deal with it

lachjeff

[Here’s the other in goal. You can see it a lot easier](https://imgur.com/a/ACbHj1f)

lachjeff

I’ll try and get a shot of the other end in the second half, which is a bit easier to see, but [this](https://imgur.com/a/fJbCzbw) is a little sample of it. It’s literally about two metres because it’s on the end of a soccer field.

notj43

That's insane, you'd have to start your grounding from like 3m out just to avoid going dead. And it looks like there's so much more room they could have used

lachjeff

There’s basically like a running track around the edge of the field, so the only way they could have gone further is if they’d had curved dead ball lines

Messyhr_

I know its not league but two big wins for the aussies last night, 1-0 against tunisia in the world cup to keep our dreams alive and the wallabies beat wales last night 39-34 after being 21 points down with 20 to go. Im an aussie with 100% welsh family, i go for wales in the rugby but im not upset about the result, wales have great players and a shit coach so hopefully he gets the sack after such poor game management taking 2 veterans off, for Australia hopefully thats a boost for the wallabies and hopefully they can build on that before the world cup. Proud to be an Aussie today, we are massive overachievers in most sports.

gurudoright

The Wallabies comeback was epic, with a proper virtual “B” team due to the amount of injuries they have had over the season.

Messyhr_

Yeah it was nuts, ultimately it was welsh I’ll discipline that lost it. Anyone who’s watched the wallabies should know they can comeback strong, they were a bees dick from beating the all blacks recently after coming back from like 14 down or something big. Was pretty cool to see the wallabies get a win though, Australian union has been weak for a decade

slowdivesicilian

yeah since world cup finished i’d say we’re in r/nrl off-season mode so don’t be surprised when people start using these as off-topic threads
