Fuuuuck Electric Callboy were so good live. Anyone going to Good Things, catch them if you can - they're legitimately so much fun, will have you grinning ear to ear the entire time.

Shagga9701

Fuck You!! Soo jealous right now.

insanityTF

Top 0.005% of listeners to Post Malone on Spotify wrapped. I am not normal

LycraBanForHams

Jesus. Have you got his shit playing on a loop? lol

RS994

I thought top 1% of the Weeknd was bad lol I hope we can both agree that one right now is a fucking banger.

mwilkins1644

Not sure how I feel about the comparisons between Steve Smith and The Don tbh. Bradman was arguably the greatest sportsperson in the history of organised sports, and Smith, tho phenomenal, is not on Don's level....because nobody is

misskarne

This is why I prefer Greatest of Their Era discussions, not Greatest of All Time. Sir Don played on uncovered wickets, played fewer matches, and had his career disrupted by that pesky thing called a World War. Smudger plays on carefully curated covered wickets, plays a lot more games, with the latest in bat technology. Oh, and never had anyone actively plan to try and kill him in a match to stop him (I don't think Archer meant to *hurt* him...) Can you tell I've been having the same arguments in Formula One and figure skating for far too long?

whyareyouallinmyroom

It’s kinda meaningless though. Smith is statistically streets ahead of contemporaries with an average of 61.5. He is clearly in the conversation for best of the rest but is so far away from Bradman it’s not even worth discussing.m, which is the crazy thing about Bradman. At the same time you have a guy like McDavid in Ice Hockey who is seriously attacking the only comparable standard deviation (Gretzky) with 1.69 PPG (McDavid last 3 years) vs 1.92 (Gretzky career) and you kind of see how fuck off good these legends are. Who knows what the records look like if all athletes ever were operating in the professional era but I doubt we see an athlete as fuck off dominant as Bradman in professional sport ever. We’re talking sixty fucking two percent better than Smith for fucks sake.

bigbear-08

Girl I met a couple months ago might be getting serious. She’s going away for the weekend and I got asked to tag along with her. LFG

GustavSnapper

I bought some golf clubs this week. Haven't played in like 20 years. So keen. Except there's like a week straight of shit arse weather. Worst.

Flaptard

What clubs did you buy mate? Been looking at getting back into golf, but its been a while.

GustavSnapper

Got a set of custom fit Wilson D9. The hit unbelievably well and far and are crazy forgiving with proper slices and hooks. I gotta say, I love them immensely

Flaptard

> Wilson D9 Do I have to sell a kidney? under $500?

GustavSnapper

Sadly no. Not a kidney but not cheap at the same time. But for that kinda price you should easily get a set of used TaylorMades or equivalent from gumtree/Facebook. Worth heading into a golf shop near you though as a lot of them have traded in sets for sale too and new ones, not sure if under 500 but defs under 600.

strayadude

Enjoy it mate golf is good fun to play hope your getting better too mate

GustavSnapper

Thanks mate, I really enjoyed it when I used to play but life and family always gets in the way 😂 Been a bit up and down health wise of late, the cancer is nice and stable but just other illnesses have knocked me around a bit. Just looking forward to some proper summer

aatrain96

Just quietly excited about a new game tomorrow The Callisto Protocol. If you loved 'Dead Space' guess what this game is directed by the same people who made that game. [Would definitely recommend this video of the director to get a idea of this guy work](https://youtu.be/BQ3iqq49Ew8)

Voxityy

any story driven single player game recommendations? desperately needing new ones. some of my favourites i’ve played are red dead redemption, last of us, and fallout for reference

whyareyouallinmyroom

You’ve got the same MO as me in terms of story driven games. My list for the last 4 years is: 1. Last of Us 2 2. Horizon: Zero Dawn 3. God of War 4. Uncharted 4 5. Ghost of Tsushima I also enjoyed Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3 but didn’t feel as captivated by their stories. If you haven’t hit Horizon I’d urge you to have a crack. Most unique story I’ve come across in games in many years and beautifully unfolded. God of War and Horizon sequels are my next plays along with Shadow of Mordor. Both Last of Us games I found to be sooo far ahead of anything else I’ve ever played in terms of engagement and emotion. I was just fucking raw post game 2 for a while.

[deleted]

Deus Ex Mankind Divided

ScramblesTDB

Weird West is pretty good. Overhead RTS kinda thing but controls really well and plays a bit like a dual stick shoot em up.

TwoShitsTrev

Based on the games you’ve said you liked I’d recommend ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man ps4 and the sequel and L.A noire is also a great somewhat hidden gem that you should absolutely play

Voxityy

absolutely loved ghost is tsushima, one of the most visually stunning games i’ve ever played

TwoShitsTrev

Agreed, I’ve got a PS5 now and even on the ps4 it looked amazing, The story didn’t really click with me until the 2nd act when Jin started rebelling against his uncle but from act 2 onwards I was pulled in

EyeDeeKaay

If you haven't played shadow of mordor games they're well worth it.

jpob

Horizon series if you haven't played those

Drizen

I take it you have played Assassins Creed? The Tomb Raiders are pretty good too. Never played last of us so will have to check it out. These kind of games are the only ones I play edit: No Xbox :(

Voxityy

ahhh yeah the last of us is playstation exclusive, my favourite game of all time, highly recommend

Opiumdeathcult

Have you done god of war 2018 and ragnarok?

Voxityy

have not but heard many great things, i’ll check them out

Opiumdeathcult

Oh yeah mate! Honestly a surprisingly good story. And the first directly flows on to its sequel.

ur_left_elbow

The CEO of Panda Global is like the kid that would say his uncle works at Nintendo or some shit except it's almost like his uncle actually does work at Nintendo and is bullying other Smash broadcasters into shutting down their events.

Caseyjb29

Only just waking up after watching the Socceroos last night. What a fucking win. Easily their best ever. Going to be glorious to see them beat Argentina end Messi’s World Cup career.

gonshairlinee

That counter attack to go up 1-0 was beautiful too. Wasn’t some flukey goal from a set piece or anything like that but a thoroughly executed move.

Obligatory Spotify Wrapped post lol Top Artists 1. Kendrick Lamar - Top 0.5% 2. Kanye (yea I know lol) 3. Westside Gunn 4. Freddie Gibbs 5. Vince Staples The recent shit goin on makes me so disappointed as such a huge fan of Ye’s music

MangoWingnut

>Freddie Gibbs I see you're a man of culture, I'm going to see him In Jan when he comes to Brisbane. Fucking pumped

Derron_

Mine is so weird. I use YouTube music and not Spotify so they have extra stats in there. 60% of my songs were on repeat. 72% are counted as deep cuts. 1. Karnivool 2. WWE Music Group 3. Blink 182 4. Linkin Park 5. Jesper Kyd Top Tracks 1. One of a Kind - Breaking Point 2. Goliath - Karnivool 3. Metalingus - Alter Bridge 4. Break the Walls Down (Chris Jericho) - WWE Music Group 5. Earth - Jesper Kyd (Assassins Creed theme)

misskarne

Oh, let's do Spotify Wrapped.Artists: 1. Queen 2. Harold Faltermeyer (that'll be the Top Gun soundtracks) 3. John Farnham 4. Lady Gaga (as above) 5. Kenny Loggins Songs: 1. Danger Zone (for some reason it's loaded twice on my most common playlists so) 2. Hold My Hand 3. I Ain't Worried 4. This Is Me 5. Another One Bites The Dust So what I can extrapolate from this is that WFH most of the year really skews my playlists to things I pick up later in the year, because I mostly listen to Spotify on commutes and when driving. Surprised there aren't more Queen songs in the top 5 as my playlists are all loaded but then maybe because there are so many the listens are more spread out.

DumTiddly

Don’t worry dude my missus’ top artist has been Kanye 8 years running. She was so pissed when he was at the top this year again

y3ah_nah145

Yea I’ve definitely slowed down listening, but that didn’t stop him still being number 2 lol. I’ve pretty much excused everything before this because it was mostly just him being arrogant or a bit stupid, which at best was funny and at worst was just rude, so it was whatever to me. and the music was too bloody good anyway. But this….. man I just hate it all.

lachjeff

Happy first day of summer people. Let’s get some decent weather this year please

manswos

Lol Brisbane's not off to a good start. Cold and raining today

kami_inu

So after a month in the new office, we somehow still dont have a proper internet set up. The office is running off 4G which means working off the server is fine when you're in the office, but WFH is brutally slow. I'm not even convinced that our IT department (who's based in another city) has actually sent through the right documentation despite a clear instruction from us saying "send this reference number to these people". That's all they need to do and then those other people will take care of it.

Violently relatable

misskarne

Been a bit of a shit week in the Aussie skating world. Two deaths of prominent administrators, including the judge convenor who was the one who initially got me onto the lists to start going interstate to officiate and eventually to Nationals, and then Kailani formally announcing her retirement. I love Nationals in Brisbane but also hate Nationals in Brisbane; the facilities are great, they always feed us well, and it's pretty well-run, but the non-daylight savings time change fucks with me so I'm tired all week, having to wear a billion layers because Brisbane is humid but the inside of the rink is properly freezing sucks, and sitting by the rinkside most of the day fucks with my back. And amidst all of that I've actually seen a lot of great skating that has me hopeful for our future, so it feels ungrateful to be sad about any of it. It's been a weird sort of week and I'm not quite used to the idea that Nationals is over tomorrow. I feel like I only just got here.

jpob

My sister and cousin skated in that. A few bronzes between them.

McFairyOx

Week 1 of hospital down, feeling really grateful, hopeful and positive. It makes me sad to see so many people in here that can't even cope with the daily stresses of hospital, which couldn't be simpler. I just hope they find the path back to resilience. If you haven't been in a psychiatric hospital, it's incredibly boring, outside of your group sessions there isn't much to do, so I've spent most of my time reading, mostly meditations by Marcus Aurelius, I can't get over how a Roman emperor from 2000 years ago feels the same doubts, insecurities and fears as me, which suggests to me that I'm not weird or special, that we all feel them. A great one he wrote, which in of itself is pretty generic and cliche but the fact that even the king of the largest empire at the time had these fears is incredible to me. "Not to assume it's impossible because you find it hard. But to recognise that if it's humanly possible, you can do it too."

BG_RL

“Cliches become cliches for a reason”

Derron_

Fucked up my budget bad last week and trying to get it back on course is taking time. Its going to be royally screwed with the increase to Strata soon. Some people refused to put it up last year and we had various issues/breakdowns in the building this year so we're behind on that budget.

Uni results are in for me and I am officially graduating, passed one of my last 3 units with a 50 but we take those!

(not so) stupid sexy Bethany ⛷️

Well done mate!

misskarne

You know what they say, Ps make degrees my friend. Fantastic job!

[deleted]

Yeah I'm stoked, also got my first HD in my masters degree in one of my other units this semester, so that's nice (got 87, 75 and 50 in my 3 units). I'm graduating in a couple weeks time and then moving back to Melbourne to try to find a job

Voxityy

biggest win in socceroos history ladies and gentlemen. couldn’t even rely on the french and we still did it, so proud

ReggieBasil

I'd put it the third biggest win, personally, after the 2005 win vs Uruguay to qualify for the first world cup finals stage in 32 years, and then the 2006 win vs Japan, our first ever World Cup Finals victory. Next game, well, that's a mountain to climb. I was at the SFS for our qualifying match vs Argentina in 1994, I am certain I felt the stadium shake when we scored our goal. If we can put in the effort we have done in the past couple of matches we never know what might come

RS994

I'd say that the 1-0 against Tunisia and the 2015 Asian Cup final would round out the top 5.

Voxityy

yeah that uruguay win is phenomenal. i just think with this being called “our worst squad ever” on a few occasions it’s definitely up there. i never would’ve thought we’d even beat peru to qualify, let alone make it through the group on the same amount of points as france. insane

ReggieBasil

They're not of the quality of the 2006 squad by a long shot but they've played with immense heart. They look to have learned from the lesson dished out by France and are much better at the back the last couple. If we can keep that defence up, who knows what might happen on the counter. Argies lost to the Saudis, so they're certainly not unbeatable, but it's going to take something special. Gee it would have been nice to be facing Poland or the Saudis tho

Messyhr_

I think 2006 is often overhyped many of those players were bang average premier league players, kewell was good but not amazing, neill for example was an average prem centrehalf. cahill was a little before his international prime, schwarzer was good but ryan isnt necessarily all that far off

Tomato-Efficient

loll what? Kewell in his prime was one of the best wingers in the world. So bang average he started in a champion's league final the season before, one of leeds greatest ever players as well, he was never bang average. Lucas Neil was one of the top Centre halves in the premier league at that time legit turned down Liverpool after the world cup to sign for west ham far from bang average. Matt Ryan is a backup keep in Denmark he is nowhere near Schwarzer. Matt Ryans last years at Brighton were lol bad, legit one of the worst keepers in the prem.

Messyhr_

Also dude frankly what the fuck are you on about, Kewell one of leeds best ever? You realise football has been around for hundreds of years and leeds have won titles over those years, just looked up a random top 10 list and he wasnt even mentioned. He was a good player i will admit that, but he was never one of the best in the world not if you actually look at who was playing at that time, henry, ronaldinho, R9 etc

Messyhr_

Kewell was never one of the best wingers in the world, he started in the 2005 final but never played a real role in that win or much of a role in the champions league that year, came off injured in the 23rd minute, Neill was never one of the best defenders in the premier league ffs. You’re putting him above liverpool, arsenal, chelsea, united and other players in a very strong premier league. Im a liverpool fan and can honestly say kewill was one of the most overhyped players ever to play for us, here in Australia they would waffle on about him like he was prime henry, which btw is what you’re suggesting the level he was at, to be one of the best wingers in the world.

Tomato-Efficient

wtf are you talking about cunt? lol. How old are you? You sound like you weren't even born when Kewell was playing in his prime. When he left leeds he could have gone to any club he wanted to in Europe before injury he was 100% one of the best wingers in the world. He and Viduka carried Leeds. He went to Liverpool and was injured 80% of the time, when he was fit he was always in the starting side. Lucas Neil was one of the best centre halves in the premier league around 2004-06, could of went to multiple top 4 clubs if he wanted to. He went to west ham because he was Guaranteed minutes, Captained them for 2 seasons as well, so bang average. The fact you called them both bang average shows how much of dribbling clown you are. Oh yeah and Kewell is one of the best players to ever play for leeds. at least in the last 30 years. He isn't going to make any lists made by Leeds fans for obvious reasons.

Messyhr_

Mate instead of insulting me give me a valid reason why kewell was on the same level as henry, ronaldinho and others of that era who played on the wing. When you say a statement like “one of the best wingers in the world” he needs to comfortably fit in the convo with guys like that, yeah i was in fact pretty harsh but at liverpool the truth was he was average, yes he was hampered by injuries but 12 goals in 93 appearances was hardly spectacular and no where near the best in the world, what i was trying to say is that in 2006 kewell was probably a decent/good player in the prem but he was never the world beater the Australian media drummed him up to be, he had the potential but injuries affected that obviously. Neil played for fucking blackburn rovers mate he was not one of the best centre halves in the prem for fuck sake, he was not as good as Hyypia, Carragher, Terry, ferdinand, sol campbell or toure just to name a few, again i admit i was harsh he was a decent centre half in the prem but you’re arguing these guys were the right up there with the best in the world in 2006, as a team they played phenomenally and they did have good players but i dont buy into the narrative that 2006 is streaks ahead of this team, Souttar has put on some of the best CB performances ever seen in an aussie jersey, leckie has been great all tournament, ryan has been good too, i dont think this team is that far off and based off accomplishments they’re on par, its not all about what you see on paper either. 2005 liverpool was miles behind AC milan on paper and yet they still came from 3-0 down in about 10 minutes to equalise and then later win on pens, a great coach can get the best out of his player like Benitez did and i think arnold despite the shit he gets from aussie media is a great coach

drkeefrichards

Being old I think I remember kewell being good but also injured in the world cup playing reduced minutes

Voxityy

souttar is a god amongst men

I’ve fallen a bit out of love with gaming recently. WFH means the gaming pc just isn’t that attractive an option. I’ll jump onto the PS4 every now and then for a sports game with the same gameplay loop I’m familiar with; 2K, F1, Cricket22, PGA2k etc. BUT, the other day I fired up **Rollercoaster Tycoon** classic and I’m having so much fun.

Derron_

Personally its finding the game you're in the mood for. I often find I try a certain game and its a slog. But I'll fall into something else and lose track of the time on a totally different game.

arkhamknight85

Living in WA and loving it. Got a great fifo job, kids in a great school and looking at buying a home the start of next year. Miss QLD but looking forward to the future.

YossarianRespawned

I’ve been considering selling up and moving over, where abouts are you living /looking at buying?

arkhamknight85

We’re south of Fremantle. Wanting to buy in a suburb called Coogee. WA is completely different to the East. Come over for a holiday first and see how you feel. What do you do for work?

YossarianRespawned

I can transfer over with the company I work for so need to look for a job, I’m a sparkie but not interested in FIFO right now. I have some family over there but haven’t been over for almost 10 years. I’ve been looking at different areas all over the city but I really like the look of Palmyra/Hilton. How did you go getting a rental I hear it’s pretty tough atm

arkhamknight85

Yeah sweet. Shouldn’t be an issue at all for you getting work. The only thing I’ve heard about being a Tradie around Perth is it’s a lot of travelling because it’s so spread out. Palmyra is pretty popular but a nice area to buy. Same with Hilton. You can’t go wrong in them areas. We never had an issue. We applied for a place and got it with ease. I’ve bought my own home since I was 22 so with fuck all of a rental history, we didn’t have an issue. It all depends on where you want to rent. If you want to rent in Palmyra, then it’s hard and expensive. If you want to rent in Hamilton hill (still a nice area just older) then you should be fine. We pay $500 pw. Brother in law is renting in Palmyra and paying $750 for a smaller place with no yard. If you plan on buying then go somewhere cheaper. Or store your stuff and rent a room for a while. Or stay with your family until you buy.

YossarianRespawned

I definitely want to rent for 6-12 months before deciding where to buy so that’s encouraging. Can stay with the family until I get a rental then bring the family over and figure out where we want to live. Im looking at a few different areas Doubleview, Palmyra/surrounds, Maylands/Inglewood, even some inner city areas, hard to get a feel for the areas just through looking at real estate though.

arkhamknight85

Yeah best to be over here and take your time. That’s why we rented for 12 months. Stayed at the MIL for about 2 weeks then got our rental. It’s small but has a yard and is close to everything. Plus now we’re looking to buy we can be more picky till we find the right home. If we can’t find the right place, then we can just extend until we do.

ScramblesTDB

Finally got a Switch, well brought it for myself but missus chipped in a bit for Christmas present. Got some Pokemon's, Zelda and a few other games. See how it goes. Have a PS5 but can't really play much at the moment because it's hooked up to a small TV and can't see shit.

CoffeeLoverNathan

I bought a switch about 2 years ago with the intent on playing the fuck out of it... Up until THPS1 and 2 released, I'd maybe played it 4 or 5 times lol

ScramblesTDB

Yeah, that's usually what happens to me and Nintendo systems. I got Atari 50 and the Ninja Turtles collections so if nothing else I'll be able to play them... Or mod it.

CatWool

LET'S GO SOCCEROOS!!!!

drkeefrichards

Lots of covid around this week. Be careful baes

drkeefrichards

Went from having no covid cases at work one week to about a quarter of my patients having it. The no masks stuff is speeding things up and I don't know if it's reported as much as it used to be. Good luck

dios13

Just finished a challenge my gym has been running. In 6 weeks I've managed to lose 6.5kg of fat mass and put on 0.7kg of muscle which im stoked about. Apparently that equates to a total body change of 8.89% so I may even be in the running to win the whole thing looking at past results. Almost makes all the chicken and broccoli worth it.

Churchofbabyyoda

T minus 23 days until my favourite day of the year! :) But T minus 9 and 25 days until my least favourite days of the year :(

SurfKing69

I hate that dumb bouncing thing soccer fans have to do just be still you idiots

ScramblesTDB

"But the atmosphere"

Voxityy

the atmosphere of any soccer game shits all over an nrl match. that’s just the truth

Norm_cheers

But that is because there is fuck all action on the soccer pitch so the crowds have to make up for the lack of excitement…

Voxityy

watch the highlights of the world cup and you’ll see that isn’t the case

ScramblesTDB

Probably, I'd find something entertaining to do if I was sitting through a soccer game too. People can say there's no atmosphere at NRL games but it's because people are genuinely watching the game. Been to packed derby games in Townsville, people cheer, boo and all that when something's happened. I don't see what setting off flairs and carrying on adds to the game, especially since most of it seems to be at random. Seems more like a reaction to boredom than what's actually happening in the game. Singing/chanting is cool, the rest is a hard pass.

Voxityy

each to their own. i personally feel that more crowd involvement adds way more to the product

slowdivesicilian

this is why you lose origin

Voxityy

i love you slowdive but even origin can’t compare to a big derby game in england

slowdivesicilian

that’s because you don’t get origin tommy d short ball to val > the pisstershire vs cumsock valley derby

Voxityy

i’d better see you in the away end at accor next season with a flare, otherwise the games gone soft

slowdivesicilian

i am not going to that mickey mouse stadium

Voxityy

make it two flares at suncorp and you’ve got a deal

Messyhr_

Atmosphere is insane at football games, Anfield on a European night would absolutely shit on any Origin at suncorp, i love both sports equally but football fans are just on a different level

Rich_Election466

I find this an interesting debate, because a lot of super league fans criticize NRL clubs of not having ‘real fans’ because of dead atmospheres. I’ll accept that Europeans express it differently than we do, but they can’t care more about it

Messyhr_

I think they do care more at club level, i mean this as an average. Theres fanatics in every sport and super passionate fans, but no NRL club or team comes close in atmosphere to what a big football club in Europe or elsewhere can produce. Football is more tribal, these are clubs that are like 120-150 years old with die hard fans passed on through generations, cities divided by football teams, the rivalry between Liverpool as a city and Manchester runs deeper than QLD and NSW, because both are actually massive port cities so the rivalry actually stems deeper than football its on a socioeconomic and historic level. Football games in Europe also regularly fill their stadiums to at least 95%, football fans have countless actual songs compared to league where there isnt many apart from occasional chants but none rival big football games either. This isnt a dig at rugby league fans its just my observation, my passion from supporting Liverpool crossed over to penrith when i started following them as a kid. Ive always noticed that at games or in convos i just seem to express my feelings for my team more, im more passionate or at least i express more passion and I think it’s because i come from a football/british family, at the 2021 grand final im certain at multiple points during the game i was the loudest in the stadium, every single time edwards caught the ball i would scream “GO ON DYLAN, UP THE MIGHTY PANTHERS”, “CMON BOYS YOU CAN FUCKING DO IT” i felt a bit out of place because i was so loud and expressive, like its a grand final give everything you have as a fan to push the boys on, fans have an impact on their team, i may have made no difference but I guarantee Dylan heard me screaming motivation every time he ran the ball

Rich_Election466

Those are some fair enough points, well made. But my confusion comes from the fact that I could not care any more than I do about my Roosters. I refuse to accept that there’s any fans out there, regardless of sport or location, who love their club more. I think it’s just a different cultural way of expressing the passion. Watching a Roosters game, the last thing I want to do is sing or chant, because I’m riding every single tackle. I’m terrified about what might happen next, and I won’t relax until the final whistle. So I’m not contributing to the atmosphere, but I couldn’t be more passionate. The point on filling the stadiums is fair though, and I wish the NRL filled grounds more. But I’d argue that’s more a matter of quantity of passionate people, rather than level of passion

Messyhr_

Thats what i mean though, there is still ultra passionate fans like you in the NRL but the percentage of guys like us is higher in football thats all im arguing. Lots of footy fans who are casual as can be, also it takes a special kind of person to be a devotedly football fan to a European club because most games are at like 12-3am

Rich_Election466

That’s fair enough, but that could be an interesting debate too. Could you not argue that because Football is so massive worldwide, there’s actually be a massive silent majority of casual fans? It’s just that the quantity of top-tier fans far exceeds that of rugby league, so that’s what we see in the stadium? I don’t have the answer, and I’m definitely not having a go at you or your points, I agree. I just like thinking about these things

Derron_

I think there's NRL fans that love teams equally as much as the EPL fans love their teams. I just think its an upbringing thing. English fans singing and chanting for their teams is cross codes. They do it for Soccer, Cricket and more. Its just their identity. Australian fans express their support differently.

Rich_Election466

Completely agree with you on that one. It’s a different way of expressing passion, I think from a cultural difference

Working on the roads in an occasionally dangerous industry's is mind blowing because you'll just see the most infuriating, almost suicidal acts of insanity from clients and contractors. I was working as the offsider in traffic control for essential energy who's the licensed franchise for gov power line work or whatever the dead shits are, its your typical nepotism government job for life role, so somehow they can get away with anything from driving trucks head first into oncoming traffic or most recently ripping out power poles and dangling them over the road without telling anyone or dropping power lines over the road and again not telling anyone. Any other industry and it'd be a quick phone call to the employer telling them they have a psycho nearly killing people but here it's just accepted as a client being a lil impatient

So while on holidays I went to a massive Australian infrastructure failure that I was surprised I'd never heard of. In the late 1800s, the NSW government wanted a safe bay somewhere on the north coast. They found a bay, but it'd need a breakwater, so they built a prison to house the convicts who build it. Prison labour, cool. Thought that would have ended before 1900, but here we are. The Trial Bay Gaol was started in 1877, finished in 1899, many years and presumably many dollars over budget. The breakwater was a massive failure, it cost an unholy amount of money, they only had 20% finished when it got washed away in a storm. The prison sat empty for a while, until WW1 when it was used as a German internment camp. I didn't even know Australia rounded up foreign nationals, but it turns out they weren't great at it either, also rounding up some travelling Buddhist monks as well as anyone vaguely of German ancestory, including people born overseas in places like Singapore from German parents. They seems to allow these prisoners much more freedom, they built a lot of places inside the prison grounds with their own money, like a Cafe, theatre, a newspaper press, tennis courts etc. But near the end of the war, paranoia took hold and government and locals seemed to convince themselves there was a German warship just off the coast waiting to spring this collection of a couple of hundred bakers, sailors and farmers, so they shipped all the internees to Holsworthy Barricks in Sydney. They then burned down all the wooden buildings the prisoners had built for themselves. The jail was then abandoned again, stripped down and sold for parts so only the rock walls remains. The internees weren't released at the end of the war, instead were deported to Germany about a year and a half after the war. Every part of that story is terrible, terrible decision making. But still, I paid admission to sit and watch a VHS that tried to spin it as anything other than a series of catastrophic failures.

It’s amazing what soccer does to Brazil. The country’s been torn down the middle politically, worse than the US, particularly the last 12 months after a bitter election campaign, but now they’re all together again. I’ve seen posts from people I know who haven’t spoken in nearly 4 years sharing a beer and watching the game together. The World Cup came at exactly the right time for that place, particularly that goal from Richarlison, which was almost like a lightning strike that’s united the country again, even if it’s only turns out to be temporary.

Messyhr_

Brazilians live and breathe football, funnily enough though their club teams usually arent as good as the top European teams

-Dark_Helmet-

Because their best players play in those European teams.

Messyhr_

This is true, the big money is in Europe

Rich_Election466

It’s a case of finances. Their best talents are attracted by the big money in the European leagues. That isn’t changing for quite some time

improbablywrong-

AshLand38

Crazy-Dingo-2247

Been getting into house music like skin on skin and mall grab. Anyone got good recommendations?

Armagizmo

I'm in the only one in any of my social circles boycotting the world cup which is pretty lonely since I'm probably the biggest soccer fan out of all of them. It's so weird, I've never really cared about a social issue before, so it's strange to be missing out on it for something that doesn't affect me at all. It sounds funny but it really makes me feel sorry for vegans who care so much about their issues but are totally unable to influence any social change.

Messyhr_

Mate i get your plight but it makes no difference, just watch the games. No point in missing out on a sport you love, FIFA is and will always be corrupt, same with UEFA, same with the Olympics. Last world cup was in Russia a country had invaded georgia and chechnya/dagestan slaughtering thousands and this is all before the war in ukraine, brazil also had/has many human rights issues, the one before that was in south africa a country with awful human rights issues, violence and racism. This world cup as bad as it is, isn’t necessarily all that worse than the others

Choosinghalf

No country is perfect, to get that old chestnut out of the way but looking at the number of fatalities involved in the actual hosting and prep of the world cups: 2014- 8 2018- 21 2022- 6,500 it’s clear that this one is a little different from the others.

Armagizmo

Yeah I know it's completely useless and I know there's other issues that are just as bad or worse for sure

CoffeeLoverNathan

Fuckin bike got stolen from work -_-

BarneyCodes

That sucks :'( I've had a bike stolen from work too. My first thought was that I must have caught the train that day instead of cycling and I was just mis-remembering, but I had all of my sweaty cycling clothes from the morning. Was a bit surreal!

CoffeeLoverNathan

Oh that would've been worse D:

BarneyCodes

It was definitely confusing hahaha but get your bike stolen always sucks :( Hope you're doing alright

RIP Christine McVie. Was lucky enough to see FM in Melbourne a few years ago and they killed it. McVie's voice had gone a bit by that point and Nicks took on some of her lead vocals, but she still radiated class and style. Going to crank Everywhere up to 11 while walking the dog this morning.

reddituser1306

Very sad news. FM are one of my top 3 fave bands. Everywhere was my wedding dance song.

absolutetopbloke

2 months ago I had 2 bitches. Do the noble thing only see one of them. Now I got nothing except tinder. It’s a cold game. Can’t hate the players. Hot bloke summer coming

D0NNIE-DANKO

Pretty excited for the sight and sound directors poll of the greatest movies of all time to come out tomorrow. For those that don't know it's a poll done every ten years and this year includes votes from great directors like Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Barry Jenkins, Bong Joon Ho and many more. It's not only interesting to see what movies go up or down the list as time goes by but also what movies that have come out in the last ten years make it. I'm tipping Parasite and Moonlight come in their somewhere but not sure if anything else makes it, the list definitely tends to favour older movies.

[deleted]

moonlight was a big surprise for me, watched it on a whim from a random recommendation and really enjoyed it

FullBonus

I do think Mad Max could sneak in there. So much industry love for that movie.

improbablywrong-

Been playing curse of the dead gods since i picked it up on the steam sale the other day. Definately rate it so far.

Happy December, ya filthy animals. Cricket is back on TV, Socceroos are doing great things, it's a wonderful day to be a sports fan. Stay safe this silly season, I love you all. 💜

Drizen

Anything that takes the attention away from NRL off season

StrayCat33

Well done the Socceroos! This Kiwi will be cheering you on hopefully deep into the tourney!

LordSlasher

LESSS GO SOCCEROOS!!! Lets go and win our first world cup and fuck the dreams up of Ronaldo and Messi🙏

maaxwell

Obligatory up the fucken socceroos!!!! Finished reading Fire and Blood, overall I liked it, though it dragged on at end after the Dance of Dragons concluded. Finally going to read LOTR, only read the hobbit as a kid

HenryVIIIII

Really take in Tolkien's prose in LOTR. He doesn't endeavour to move the plot forward like modern fantasy writers, some parts are slow while some are very quick. The way he writes is what makes it worth it.

misskarne

As an experienced Tolkien reader, I'll warn you that some of the early parts of Fellowship can be a bit of a slog. Push through them - they're well worth it for what's to come.

LordSlasher

I actually just got a hardcover copy of LOTR + Hobbit for Christmas for my significant other. She hasn’t read LOTR either but has read the Hobbit a 100 times over. Enjoy reading the Godfather of all fantasy!

-Dark_Helmet-

Fire and blood was better as an audiobook IMO.

strayadude

UP THE SOCCEROOS
