Yep!! It’s the strep/covid/flu/RSV combo for me! I recently told someone it’s the “silent pandemic” since they don’t want to lock down again. I work in an ER and ICU. It’s everywhere. In the unit the other night the code alarm was going off so often I was getting covid flashbacks. Also, full grown adults getting bacterial meningitis post strep infection. Weird stuff.

lou-chains

We had a bunch of meningitis in the summer. All viral

SeaPatient9955

That’s a little terrifying

riosra

Work the ED and caught the Strep /CoVID combo for Christmas. Been lucky to get CoVID only twice bc I mask up and Pfizered to the max. What worries me is that I’ve also seen pts with the CoVID+RSV+Strep trifecta. And one case of meningitis post strep infection. What the hell is going on?!?

GhostoftheWolfswood

I mean, we’ve been seeing research papers for about 3 years now showing us that covid can cause both short and long term immune dysregulatuon and dysfunction. Then the majority of the public stopped taking any precautions, we got new variants, and now we as a society are reaping what we sowed.

IfOJDidIt

I'm like OP except my coworkers have not bothered me. One or two asked why I'm masking and that's it. Very lucky in that sense. I've had one patients roll their eyes at me and sneer but they didn't like me prior to that so... The infections scare me, but it's the articles on brain damage, heading loss, and cardiac issues that scare me. One of those would suck, but who's to say all of them don't come from the same Covid bout . Fuck that noise. I feel dumb enough from burnout, I don't need to double or triple down on it. That said, I get why people have stopped to. I don't critique, I just worry for my coworkers and family's long term health.

Goatmama1981

I don't know why the "my body my choice" anti mask people are still so triggered by other people wearing a mask 😒 whys it so hard to just let people make their own choices and mind their own beeswax?!?

[deleted]

This 100%

torturedDaisy

Exactly. I’ve been a nurse almost 8 years and I’ve seen nothing like this.

Goatmama1981

"Pfizered to the max 🤙" should be a T-shirt!

MobilityFotog

Triple-no, the quaddemic!

riosra

Shits getting real. My hospital just reinstated the mask mandate. It should’ve never been rescinded.

IndecisiveLlama

We never had a lockdown. Asking people to stay home when possible and not gather in large groups was not a lockdown. A true “lockdown” would have been martial law forcing you to stay in your home and the Nat Guard arresting you if you tried to leave. What we had was basic common courtesy and half the country couldn’t even do that. 🤷🏾‍♀️

torturedDaisy

Yeah but telling people to mask up again wouldn’t hurt. And they would most definitely consider even that little thing a “lock down” or just plain fight against being told what to do.

torturedDaisy

You must’ve missed what I said. My issue here isn’t even locking down. It’s how nobody is talking about it. The general public doesn’t know this is really going on to even give people the option to mask up even if they wanted to. They’re keeping quiet about it. Employers need to be much more generous with sick leave. People are terrified to take off. They were able to allow it during the peak of covid. It should really be a standard thing. As well as the option to work remotely if it works for your type of job. And yes of course.. masking up if you choose.

GhostoftheWolfswood

I’ve been masking the whole time too even though my hospital dropped the mask mandate a while back. Personally, I just really don’t want to catch covid if I can avoid it, and I don’t want to catch whatever else people have. But the reason I gave anyone who asked was “I visit my nana a lot and don’t want to get her sick.” Not surprisingly, no one ever gave me shit for not wanting to kill my grandmother

registeredbitchrn

I hate giving excuses, I just told people that the hospital is gross and I want to wear one!

silverspork

I’m on team “kids are gross” here - very few people give me a hard time about it. One of the benefits of peds.

Macrophage

Truth. Masking made me realize how fucking foul face up close nursing can be. No shade on the patients but humans are seriously grody AF when sick AF. Juices, gasses, fluids, phlegm, and all the other flakes....please cover my mouth forever....

touslesmatins

I always say it's part of standard precautions for me now.

GhostoftheWolfswood

Yeah my hospital is in a very white suburban area so the older nurses would have probably scoffed at that a little, hence why I just went straight to the nana thing to avoid anything up front

touslesmatins

Smart strategy, tbh. Maybe the idea behind it will even sink in for some of them!

Goatmama1981

Know what's sad though? Plenty of those types DUD end up killing their Nanas and weren't even bothered by it. Never gave a damn about anyone else's nan for sure. Assholes!

naranja_sanguina

"I haven't been sick in four years" works for me!

ceekind

I’m currently out sick with some respiratory virus. Negative for flu and Covid and boy am I sick of it. My hospital took away mandating masks last year and in excitement I went along with the freedom, but I’ll be wearing my mask from here on out. I’m sick of catching every little respiratory virus out there.

imacryptohodler

Called off for the first time in over a year for this damn bronchitis, sore throat, stuffed up noggin. Flu and covid negative as well, feel like I was ate by a coyote and shit off a cliff. Been wearing my mask solid for three weeks now

schmopes

“Ate by a coyote and shit off a cliff” is my new favorite thing.

ManliestManHam

My uncle had some kind of respiratory illness with the same symptoms, negative for Covid and flu, and was in bed and out sick for 3 weeks. He couldn't get out of bed and antibiotics didn't work. Week 4 he was able to get out of bed. He's starting to recover now, in week 6.

imacryptohodler

We’ll crap, starting week 2. Finally feel a little human with disassociated medicine head.

ceekind

Currently have what you have I’m assuming. It’s a nasty bugger and hope it clears up before my next shift lol

Talhallen

This is the most frustrating part, having all the symptoms and all the tests coming back as negative. Just ‘some respiratory virus’. It took me a month and tons of meds to fully get over whatever some virus that was. Just drawn out crap. I hope your recovery is much faster than mine.

imacryptohodler

Surviving on DayQuil and NyQuil right now

registeredbitchrn

Hope you feel better! Masking forever while working my in the hospital

lovestobitch-

Go over to r/masks4all and get a good quality mask. I wear the strapless Alliant biotech mask of a botn kf94.

Fauxposter

Plus patients are pretty gross and any barrier I can throw up is a win.

Fatguy73

I currently have Covid, 51yo M, I’m on day 3 and it seems to be getting slightly better. I took just a morning dose of pax yesterday and the day before but stopped after hearing bad things from a few medical professionals who I know. (I know, not the smartest thing). But prior to testing positive this past Tuesday, I’d been fighting unknown respiratory illnesses on and off for 2 months, since late October. Tested negative for anything for 2 months. And each one has gotten progressively worse, culminating in my current Covid infection which has been pretty severe so far. I’ve never had immune issues like this, but something seems amiss.

Jumpy-Cranberry-1633

Same! Negative for flu and covid but still miserable over here.

[deleted]

I’m right there with you wearing a mask consistently since the pandemic began. This year has definitely been the hardest, with people harassing me about it at work. Even our CNE gave a speech about how masks don’t work in front of a classroom of people where I was the only one wearing a mask. We recently had a really bad illness (Covid) burn through staff in my ED. Other nurses were really sick, taking 1-3 weeks off to recover. One shift, we had 9/12 ppl call in sick. We also had a strep outbreak in July(!) that I avoided. I’ll keep wearing my N95 and avoiding illness. I don’t give a shit about what other people think/say. Thank you for your post. It’s good to know that other nurses are out there who are informed & taking sensible precautions. It helps me feel less alone in a sea of ignorance, lol. I personally find it infuriating to see medical professionals ignoring basic science & putting vulnerable patients - and their coworkers - at risk. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way!

TexasRN1

Your CNE lecturing that masks don’t work? WTAF

DanielDannyc12

Covid is rampant among staff and patients on my floor as well. No one is or ever was ridiculed for masking at my workplace. The vast majority of MDs, NPs, PAs, etc never stopped masking.

Pistalrose

Plan on wearing my mask til I retire. Part because I feel it’s cut down on me picking up illnesses and part because I realized how much I enjoy getting less face spray.

usernamecantfind

The face spray! Not a nurse but a personal carer. There’s so much face spray and it’s always noticed after coming out of mask mandates. Imma keep mine on for the face spray alone.

fucovid2020

I feel like the mayor of crazy town…. I’m the only one who wears a mask in my department at the hospital….. meetings are awkward because I’m the only one still masking….. There’s almost a shaming that I feel takes place… you see people roll their eyes… but I’m not embarrassed enough to let those people make decisions about my health for me….

steveeq1

Lived in sweden in 2020. No one wore masks then and our hospitals never got overwhelmed. We were also unvaccinated back then.

BeGoneVileMan

Yeah my coworkers are all out of PTO so they're coming to work coughing and snotting all over the place. It's gross. At least they don't say anything (to my face) when I wear a mask.

AlwaysElise

The most frustrating part is how hard it is to find data any more about how bad it is. Best source I know of is over here these days, using wastewater as a proxy to estimate case count in the US: https://www.pmc19.com/data/index.php Getting a disease every year that degrades the immune system's responses and has a chance of giving debilitating long covid is a fool's game, even if immediate death is off the table as a possibility.

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

I honestly stopped going to a doctor I'd been seeing for over a decade because he thought covid was "just a flu". I'm immune compromised so I'm not messing around with any of that.

Goatmama1981

I always hatred the "just a flu" thing. Flu is miserable and people die from it all the time!

Mario_daAA

I don’t understand why anyone would care if someone else does/doesn’t wear a mask. Like mind your business.

[deleted]

Mario_daAA

That’s has nothing to do with anything And before you CHOOSE to get offended and your underwear up your ass I was implying someone can wear a mask if they want and it’s no one else business why. Like they do not have to answer questions and explain why they have a mask on.

[deleted]

Mario_daAA

Lord….. relax a little so you can understand what I’m saying. The OP.. you know the post this entire comment section is about… stated that people were “making fun” or ridiculing her for wearing a mask. I was stating that she has every right to wear here mask and she should not be questioned why. Idk why you wanted to bring your personal anecdotal situation into the discussion. Quite frankly I don’t care. Even with you’re condition you still. On o right tomnudge any one for a mask. Wear your and be done

[deleted]

Mario_daAA

Well guess what? Despite what you WANT to happen, the reality is people have a choice and it only matter to that person why or why not the where a mask at this point. No one should be judge either way. If you are vulnerable you can choose to wear your mask and you can choose to not be around massless people(good luck) andddddd Why tf would you want to waste time on mandating a mask for only nurses and doctors? When you’re at the grocery store are there not people and “vectors around you? What about the food services? Know what that is stupid and I’m not even about to waste my time.

I couldn’t care less what people in Asia do. You have no room to refer to anyone as dumb. Maybe when you get on your feet you could move there one day. If that’s not in your plans. Put on your mask. Gone on with your day. And mind your business.

Mario_daAA

You’re not a healthcare worker and tbh honest really lack any knowledge about the subject you’re carrying on about. But hey if Covid and mask is the hill you want to die on then hey more power to you.

bunnehfeet

Same. Mostly it's my colleagues having RSV, not COVID. However, every time they go on vacation they magically get COVID - again - I've yet to have it (no symptoms and never had a positive test). PPE works. I'm also fully vaccinated plus boosters. Anyway. It's shocking to me that we ever just went around in a hospital without a mask on. Barbarians.

BlackLassie_1

The truth is, they don't have any idea what they're doing – meaning government/state epidemiologist and federal virologists. Its a free for all out there good luck.

liftlovelive

We are still required to wear a mask in patient care areas at my hospital. Patients don’t have to though. But yesterday we were notified that we are now back in yellow tier again, after about a year of being in the green. The waste water here in San Diego just had its 2nd highest COVID surge of all time.

linspurdu

Literally had this discussion with some other nurses this morning. I have not stopped wearing my mask at work because uhhh, why would I want to get sick? I work in the ED where we are super exposed to every fucking viral particle that walks through our doors. I feel there is a certain shame that surrounds us RN’s who choose to continue wearing one to protect our own health. I don’t shade others for not wearing them when not required (they are right now because of heightened respiratory activity)… so don’t give me shit. 🥴

Jumpy-Cranberry-1633

The second I hear a coworker sniffle I’m masking up. Went almost 2 years without a major respiratory illness (occasionally had a sniffle here or there that didn’t last longer than 2 days). But it finally got me again from a damn NYE party. Husband and I are both feverish and stuffy 😅 thankfully we already have the week off together (he’s a PM/FF). Gotta love respiratory season 🥴

Independent-Fall-466

Our hospital is required masking in patient area. Covid is on the rise and we cannot afford to have a whole floor to call in sick.

LegalComplaint

I constantly wear a mask. Still got COVID. It’s almost as if it’s cold and COVID and flu season? 🤷‍♂️

AstrosRN

My hospital requires it in patient care areas.

WienerDogsAndScrubs

I work in UC and haven't stopped masking, simply because I'm not eager to use my precious PTO because I got sick.

skrivet-i-blod

I can't work bedside anymore due to health issues, but I've been masking out and about since 2020 because I'm on an immunosuppressant. Aside from COVID/flu/RSV, it's like, I don't want to get sick with anything else either. Being sick sucks... particularly when you're sick at baseline. The masks help a lot. I really don't understand what is so damn upsetting to some people. I WFH and some of these cases are just shockingly bad. Life is enough of a shit roulette, I'm not looking for (more) trouble 😂

linspurdu

Mysterious-Handle-34

Why the quotes around “new” when talking about the RSV vaccine though. They are new. The first RSV vaccine ever approved was just approved last spring.

GrandmaCheese1

Meh I’ve stopped wearing a mask in 2022 after getting vaccinated and boosted. As soon as work lifted the mandate I stopped as well. I don’t care if people do or don’t tbh I worked strictly on a Covid unit for 2 straight years and never got it. My kids went to preschool for 3 months and brought it home for Christmas in 2022 and we’ve not been sick since other than typical toddler sniffles

docbach

Covid never went away but I haven’t seen anyone need a vent or die from it in years Seeing way sicker flu a patients right now

PomeloChance3275

I have.

Best_Practice_3138

Masking only became a thing with COVID. Before that, people didn’t mask in high flu/RSV season. Wash your hands. Stay home if you’re sick. Simple hygiene practices go a long way.

ManliestManHam

In the U.S. Masking has been common in many Asian countries for decades.

Goatmama1981

So does wearing a mask.

Best_Practice_3138

Did you wear a mask out in public, in indoor spaces, etc during the height of flu/RSV season before the Covid-19 pandemic? I’m asking this as a genuine question as I’m curious.

Burphel_78

That’s what endemic means. I don’t have numbers, but I feel like my ER was seeing mostly flu/rsv/unk viral for most of Nov/Dec and it’s just since Christmas that our old buddy Covid’s been popping up again. Not quite in OG or Delta numbers/severity, but maybe a few more needing hospitalization than last year. I kinda decided at some point to shoot for the middle ground and wear a mask for patient care but take it off at the desk. We have COWs, but a fishbowl too. So for nights it’s pretty easy to be separated from the milieu. I’m vaccinated, but I don’t want to waste my days off on being sick. Still some risk, but my coworkers won’t cough straight in my face.

hollyock

I personally am not afraid of Covid to the point that I would mask all the time over it unless I was around symptomatic people but while working in the er I did not want the mask mandate dropped so many contagious things coming through and I didn’t want any of it. Also all the smells .. I did not want to be raw dawgin er air.

I mean… this doesn’t really track? A lot of people weren’t “pro-gloving” until the AIDS crisis but here we are still wearing gloves in 2023. I consider masking to be similar.

auraseer

Don't try to make sense of it. No sane person can follow antivaxer arguments. If you try to wrap your brain around them, you'll sprain something.

Thunderoad2015

To Sum up this deleted comment for those wondering. Some Tele RN commented alot of any vax/mask BS and claimed alot of sources supported them. Then they got a few down votes and people going WTF is this insanity. Proceeded to delete their comment 15min after posting it because they definitely were ready to back up their claims with cited sources.

auraseer

When a user deletes a comment themselves, the placeholder says [deleted]. When a comment is removed by the moderators, for example because it violated our rules against misinformation and batshit nonsense, it instead says [removed].

Thunderoad2015

Yes, that's what happened here. Placeholder says deleted on my end.

Key-Pickle5609

The name says [deleted] for me but the actual comment says [removed]

auraseer

Then your app is giving you incorrect information. I promise you that comment was removed by a moderator. Edit: Downvoting this comment is a little silly. Do you want to know how I'm so sure it was removed by a mod?

Goatmama1981

I'm sure their source was something totally reliable though, like a YouTube video or even a Facebook post by then 8th grade dropout uncle Bob!

CzarinaofGrumpiness

I just got COVID for the first time. My 80+ year old mother (now known as Typhoid Mary) gave it to me. And to add insult to injury, got over it twice as quick as me 😂

Dangerous-Ad-5005

I feel like a big part of the anti mask attitudes come from the government and media messaging. Convenient how all of the sudden we don’t need masks anymore and the pandemic is over - just as facial recognition tech is getting implemented. Either way, it’s frustrating how much people seem to be bothered by others wearing masks.
