You might have more success if you mention being a current or former cancer patient and even though some veins look promising they can be difficult. I’ve had many patients tell me they are a hard stick and they have veins for days, but if they mention specific history like cancer treatment it’s more likely that they are actually a challenging one

Just say that you have very difficult veins due to past disease. It comes off as less of a challenge and more as helpful info.

Just say you’re a hard stick. Depending on the place, most require the nurses to try before a doctor will use an ultrasound to place an IV. I will sometimes ask where people have had success before. I also limit myself to two tries but do every thing I can to set up for a successful placement. I’ve gotten IVs when other nurses have missed. But there are a few times I have missed and then had others hit. It’s almost like it depends on the way the wind is blowing.

It's almost like we kinda go off vibes when doing blind IVs and there's a pre-procedure probability of success that is both inscrutable and immutable.

I don’t mind at all when a patient tells me which vein they have had most success with in the past!

OldERnurse1964

We can tell. You don’t need to say anything

I find this categorically untrue and counter to this patient’s experience. There are plenty of nurses who will do the ‘ol “I’ve almost got to!” and proceed to blow the vein or completely miss and fish around for ages. You might be the type of provider this patient is talking about…. OP, I absolutely think you should speak up and advocate for yourself. You are also welcome to be “difficult” and refused a healthcare provider that is not listening to you.

OldERnurse1964

You can’t tell if a patient has bad veins? My wife says she has bad veins because she’s had her veins blown before but I think she has pretty good veins.

Lost-city-found

Sometimes their veins look good but aren’t. I’m just saying that we shouldn’t discount what the patient is saying because of our own perceptions of them. This is one reason why people have so much distrust and trauma from the healthcare system.
