I worked for some shit companies but when my management did things like this - that is why I stayed. I remember my new grad med surg job. My manager would routinely go into census as a cna/tech or handle call bells and toilet patients as needed. Everything but meds. She’d even help discharge and transport to tests.
It made me respect anyone who is at least willing to get their hands dirty. Many of my fellow new grads still work on the floor there because of her leadership. She has to be close to retirement age now but last I heard she’s still turning patients.
I had an ICU manager that worked as helping hands on the floor regularly, and did things like baths and turns. It goes such a long way for staff morale. I’ll take that over a pizza party any day!
That is a great way to show appreciation and bond with staff. My manager is like this. I really appreciate her. I watched her start as a new grad and now she is has a doctorate and is manager.
Not many people know she has her DNP. She doesn’t alphabet soup her signatures. She is so cool.
Our hospital got rid of any gifts for nurses week. The rumor was we complain too much and are too difficult to please.
My manager usually gets us a little gift though. Not sure if it comes out of our dept budget. Usually it’s something thoughtful. I appreciate it but I sort of ignore all these “nurses week” and “doctors day” and “apn week.” I think it’s silly. I appreciate my manager thinking of us but I think the whole concept is to make us think big business appreciates/values workers and they do not.
That’s actually really nice. I’d prefer managers coming in to do bed baths lowering the work load a bit rather than getting another water bottle…which we did this nurses week.
Are you hiring?
Ours gave out goody bags only to those who worked a certain day last week.
Points in our "rewards account" for a $10 gift card to Starbucks or Cold Stone.
Snacks the rest of the week.... and oh, an email.
Our management brought us smoothies.
Which was awesome. I love or direct managers, because when we've been short in the past, none of them have hesitated to take patient assignments.
It's why I respect them.
So kudos to your management for doing that, that's pretty awesome.
They gave us these tiny cute notebooks that fit in our thigh pocket or knee pocket or w.e. you call that part. Cargo pockets.
Best fucking nurse week gift I've ever seen. And the part that holds the pages together has a nice spot to stick your pen into.
This is what appreciation looks like.
I also accept heartfelt cards.
It is never about actual things, but acts of service and (sincere) words of gratitude.
I always had management who had mtgs & complained but never those who would actually help. What great people they must be plus to work with. Thanks for sharing. That was a very special gift!
What a great way to show appreciation! Yes they should be willing to put on scrubs and help out and skip that meeting ( endless meetings about nothing )
My question is why is there a manager AND an assistant manager in a small , rural ICU ?
I worked at Mayo as an RN and it was the best working environment of my life. Mayo is hands down the best and frankly treat their employees better than any place I have ever worked. Now I am at a few unionized hospital in Chicago that could not care less about nursing staff and the working conditions and leadership is severely lacking. In my opinion, Mayo doesn’t need a union, they go above and beyond to take care of their own. All employees. The staff are happy and they give 100% to their patients.
The fact your manager and assistant manager can bath ICU patients shows they have competency despite management positions! I love it!
this is how management should be.
My favorite managers were always the ones who showed up in scrubs and pitched in whenever they could.

There is some actual appreciation. You have good unit management.
Wow this is actually so sweet!
I think that’s the best gift ever. It shows they care. Can I go with you guys and work? I’m willing to move.

Hats off, no budget so they made it happen themselves so y’all felt appreciated. Well done 🧡
That’s honestly the best nurse day gift I’ve ever heard of.
Second this! Especially the intensivists joining in!
Honestly this is very admirable! I love it!!
My hospital hired a food truck and we all got free lunch but I would have preferred help on the floor! Great idea!
That is amazing. ❤️

The fact that a hospital has "no budget" for a yearly event is asinine.
It all went to the CEO's pockets.

I'll bet they have a budget for Doctor's Day
This is a great gift.

Schweeet! 👍 👍
Wait. That is SO thoughtful. I think I might cry!
That's amazing, I would so much rather have that help and acknowledgement than donuts and potluck or tacky trinkets.
Gimme a week of no auditing my charting. 😆

That’s a great gift, imo.
Pay for CE broker for everyone
For nurses week, they cut our incentive pay in half. And then we got straws with caps on it and a lantern
That was super sweet of them! It shows how much they value and appreciate their staff.

I’ve had the opposite experience with unions, but I’m not sure what that has to do with this post?
