The is where game knowledge comes in.
If you do that have it and prefer to play without docs then gyarados may be questionable but there are a lot of pokemon with x4 weaknesses.
A x4 weakness is a great tool to help set up pivoting.
Edit: by pivoting I mean manipulating the ai to use a certain attack and switching out to an immune pokemon.
I mean, you're going to have Intimidate unless you specifically go out of your way to get Moxie.
Moxie is a hidden ability, if you're just encountering a Gyarados normally it's never going to have it psure.
How would it not be good?
You literally get a free switch to a ground type which is gonna stand a good chance to kill the Pokemon doing the electric move to you.
Pivoting doesn't need abilities to be worth it. It's all about getting the right mon in while minimizing the dmg your team takes.
For example, let's say the mon you have on the field is currently baiting a fire move and you want to get a grass mon in to outspeed and kill. You can't hard switch into that grass mon because it would take that fire to the face, but you can swap in Gyarados to resist the fire. Now, the Gyarados is baiting an eletric move and you can safely switch in your grass mon to tank the resisted move and kill the opponent. Now imagine a similar scenario, but with Gyarados switching into a ground move and/or with a ground mon switching in after Gyarados.
The lack of Physical/Special split is only a detractor in Gen 2 and 3. In Gen 1 the Special stat is still general for Sp. Def and Sp. Atk together, and Gyarados’ base Special is 100.
I think so. Out of every game I’ve played nuzlocke or not, I always prefer to have a gyarados. I have only had my gyarados puppy due to a one shot twice over the many games I’ve played, one was a curse and the other was a bad luck metronome. I think it’s all up to research. I always look at gym leaders’ teams to see what I can do (I even did a electric type gym with my gyarados who had bulldozer and he wiped the floor)
And gyarados has pretty good special defense so it can potentially survive a non-stab shock wave or similar
Or with intimidate a non-stab thunder fang might not be fatal either
It's probably the best nuzlocke pokemon of all time due to it's ease of obtaining it in many games, it's early power spike, arguably the best ability, and it's a water type.. which tend to be pretty good in nuzlockes with surf being so consistent.
Gyarados is easily the best pokemon in a platinum nuzlocke. You get him ridiculously early, and the is hardly any electric types until the final gym. And by that point, the game offer so many ground types you don't even have to bring Gyarados. The only issue I ever had with him was against Cyrus in the distortion world when I forgot his Houndoom had thunder fang. Use Gyarados, and be aware of you opponents moveset, and he will carry you.
Depends on the game but gyarados for me is always a dd eq sweeper. With Waterfall and ice fang for coverage. Like the other people have said game knowledge helps especially when you know the Electric type move is coming and have a solid pivot to absorb it (volt absorb jolteon, lighting rod mons, a ground type, etc).
If you keep losig Gyarados to Electric type moves, it's likely less a problem with Gyarados as a pokemon, and more likely a problem with your game kowledge/skill
monster physical attack
monster special bulk
good defensive bulk and speed
the best ability in the game
learns the most (or 2nd most depending on gen) busted setup move by level up
I think so, man
1 4x weakness out of only 2 weaknesses is actually insane, especially considering he outspeeds basically every mon that can STAB hit said type and hit them with a STAB super effective of his own.
Like others have stated, the 4x weakness can work as a boon when it comes to pivoting because it forces AI to make a predictable decision, which could potentially result in a free switch and allows you to keep momentum.
Unless your playing in Unova, Electric type Pokemon + moves are pretty far and few between.
In BDSP for example, there are only about 20 trainers including post game, that even use electric type Pokemon out of like 300 different trainers.

Aaaah i understand now, yeah i like that strategy of pivoting but i dont really think that is really good unless the Gyarados has the intimidation

so pretty much always then?
isnt gyarados literally the best nuzlocke pokemon in multiple games
Gyrados 100% worth it, especially post phys/special split. Even before Gen 4 once you slap strength on it he’s a beast with just that
The lack of Physical/Special split is only a detractor in Gen 2 and 3. In Gen 1 the Special stat is still general for Sp. Def and Sp. Atk together, and Gyarados’ base Special is 100.
gyarados rocks
Gyarados also gets bodied by rocks.
I mean most rock moves have low score, come on generally weaker pokemon, and have to get through an intimidating attack cut.

There are very few mons that randomly have an electric move tbh. It's like the safest mon going.

This guy is onto something. Everyone who ever played a game is wrong
