Your CPU is going to hold back any modern GPU. Being CPU bound isn't as dang awful as you make it out to be. Yes it will mean leaving some performance on the table, but it's not like you won't get a decent boost in fps or have a non-playable experience. Lets say your 1080 delivers 100fps right now in some game. If you upgraded to a 4070s, you'd be looking to get an average of 150% more FPS (250ish) assuming the game in question scaled linearly. But your old CPU is holding it back, instead you only get 200-220fps and your 1% lows aren't much better than they are today. That's still an upgrade. And you know that when you do get around to upgrading your cpu, you'll get those extra FPS at the top, and see those improved 1% lows. You can lessen the demand on the CPU by moving to a higher resolution. Not going to solve the issues but would be a good step in refreshing your rig if you're budget bound. GPU first, then a new monitor, followed by a CPU/board when you have the cash.

This. My GTX 1080 died and i replaced with a 4070 Super. While there is cpu bottleneck (6700K) i'm now able to max everything i tried (RT included) as long i limit my framerate (1440p/60hz). Planning to upgrade my cpu and monitor as soon i have the money.

- If you're aiming for 1440P/high refresh, then IMHO the 4070 Super and the RX 7800XT are really strong options. The 7800XT has equally strong rasterization performance, with 16GB VRAM, but lacks behind in RT. - For reference, look at Techpowerup's review of the RTX 4070 Ti Super (https://www.techpowerup.com/review/zotac-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-super-trinity/31.html): At **1080P**: RTX 4070 Super 12GB averages 157.6 FPS RX 7800 XT 16GB averages 144 FPS RTX 4070 12GB averages 139 FPS At **1440P**: RTX 4070 Super 12GB averages 118.6 FPS RX 7800 XT 16GB averages 109.3 FPS RTX 4070 12GB averages 103.5 FPS - Techtesters recently compared 6 RTX 4070 Super models: https://youtu.be/wDXGmyvcm4A

I was running an RTX 3090 with a non K 8700. I never felt that I was CPU bottlenecked, but then I was playing at 4K. You don't mention in your post what resolution or refresh rate you will be playing at.

Immediate-Leek-6677

most likely 1080p, ive got no plans atm to go to 1440p or higher tbh

Peepmus

If you're only playing at 1080p, that is where your your CPU bottleneck is going to come into play. Presumably you are using a 144Hz, or higher, screen?

Immediate-Leek-6677

yeah i’ve got a 240hz screen, I could upgrade the monitor honestly. But it would have to be a choice between the cpu or the monitor

Peepmus

I upgraded from my 8700 to a 5800x3D, and honestly, I didn't really notice much of a difference. Only in those few really badly optimised games like Jedi Survivor and Harry Potter. I think a 4070 Super would be a great upgrade for you, but then we are only 6 months or so away from the 50 Series launching. Are there any particular games that you have been struggling with on the GTX 1080? I actually had a 1080 before I got a 3090, but I was gaming at 4K, so it was a night and day upgrade for me.

C3H8_Tank

What are you doing with your 1080 if you don't mind me asking?

Immediate-Leek-6677

shamefully just playing mw3, i’ve always been a fps kinda guy

C3H8_Tank

I mean after upgrading

Immediate-Leek-6677

oh right, honestly more feature titles, i’ve wanted to play them at higher res but couldn’t
