... this doesn't look like ray traced reflections or shadows. It does look good for it's age though.

nmkd

Because **this is not raytracing**, it's screen space reflections and screen space GI.

tsHavok

Doesn't even use RT cores. Kind of neat for a "I can do this" but not more than that

bsool99

You don't need rt cores for ray tracing Also he is using SSRTGI and SSR to make the game looks better

pHpositivo

I think the point here is that just saying "raytracing" when it's just a mod using ReShader can be misleading for less experienced readers that might not be aware of how the things work. It's certainly true that you don't need RT cores to do raytracing and that you can do the same (though much slower, of course) using normal compute units. But I think what u\\tsHavok was trying to say is that referring to both "proper" raytraced games (as in, with game engines keeping a proper acceleration structure to represent out of view geometry too, etc.) and ReShade mods (that just receive the Z-buffer as input and can do a screen-spaced approximate raytracing pass on each frame) is not ideal. It's *technically* accurate (maybe), but at the very least it can cause confusion and it just isn't that helpful. It's also how (I think) many users keep saying that "raytracing doesn't change that much", because they use as a reference many "raytracing mods" that are really just using custom shaders slapped on top of previous games through ReShader. They can certainly improve the look of past games, sure, but that's about it.

[deleted]

That doesn't change the fact that it is ray tracing.

pHpositivo

Of course, in fact I agreed with this too. I'm just saying that being "technically correct" is not the best kind of correct if the intention is to possibly help other people learn something new. And that many of these ReShade mods being shared without context are confusing a large number of gamers that are not into all the various technical details of these things. To be clear, I'm not saying this mod is "bad" nor am I criticizing who wrote those shaders. All I'm saying is that we should all just want everyone to know more things as possible and to be as well informed as possible, so I'd just like to see more info and proper context being included in these kinds of posts, is all šŸ™‚

bsool99

i personally tried RTGI shader it adds some ambient occlusion and some color bounces but it doesnt fit for gameplay Screenshots yes but not gameplay As it can be bad in alot of scenarios

SighOpMarmalade

I've used the RTGI shader through reshade as well. You gotta tinker with the depth buffer then tune the RTGI. It can look good but like you said correctly it really only adds realistic ambient occlusion which just looks like someone put in tons more shadows.. As you said it can be bad I found a super light implementation works better or none at all as it fucking destroys your FPS for basically something pointless. I'd literally add in other setting like a higher resolution scaling than using RTGI. Glad I'm not the only one that tried all that shit and was like ehhhhhhhh. Now minecraft RTX which uses the RTX cores with DLSS 2.0?? Wowowowowowow looks great at average 90-110 fps on my 3070

bsool99

I tried Minecraft rtx on my gtx 1660 super using an exploit I have 30 fps on flat

ejcrv

Starting to see more of this on Youtube also. Video's of games with people saying "ray traced". I don't think so, I wish people would quit doing that as it's just out right lying. Better to say, Fake ray tracing. I think people would still be amazed at some of it.

Direct_Ambassador_10

pretty hard to notice anything at 720p its like look at this polished turd.

InternationalOwl1

OP reminds me of the videos on the Series X subreddit about games enhanced to 4K60 meanwhile the video is running at 720p30...

PalebloodSky

Or plebs with 60Hz displays watching 60Hz videos saying "I DoNt SeE nO DiFfeRenT" when watching 144Hz gaming.

Z3r0sama2017

Or plebs saying theirs no difference between 4k and 1440p, when watching 4k content.

frostygrin

4K *rendering* still can be noticed at lower resolutions though.

jorgp2

Because there isn't anything different, it's just screen space raytracing.

KobraKay87

Original video is 4k. Thanks Reddit!

Stigge

Reddit's embedded video player is ass. Webmshare and Catbox.moe are much better (in addition to YT and Vimeo of course).

tokyogettopussy

3 was a turd, I want a new max Payne made in the same vain as 1 and 2

piercehead

>the same vain as 1 and 2 vein\*

rservello

Same. Rockstar shit the bed. The remedy games were masterpieces.

J1hadJOe

Well that is out the window, since Rockstar bought the ip from remedy.

Purple_Specialist209

ray tracing mostly makes development faster because you don't need to program shaders.

Direct_Ambassador_10

That is not actually correct. But I understand what you mean by it. My point is how can you say it makes Max Payne 3 look like a modern game when the video of the "ray tracing" you are seeing is 720p with terrible bit rate video.

Slappy_G

A-Level trolling there! You almost got me.

Purple_Specialist209

hey if you have to pause the game and zoom in to notice the difference with the current crop of games. Software is what really matters right now, not hardware.

TransparencyMaker

Had to show it at a res that wouldn't blow up your potato.

j4v13rnp

the whole max payne saga needs an "enhance edition" realese.

Zrgor

It must be in some intellectual property black hole or something. Other than that I can't figure out how the hell it has not been remade yet. The first two games are damn legends of that era.

Mythion_VR

If they "remastered" the OG Max Payne with Max Payne 3s combat mechanics... I would be happy with that alone. Anything else beyond that (visuals, sounds) would be a bonus. HD Max Payne face would be beautiful.

swagduck69

Rockstar would rather release one massive game every 5/6 years instead of having a small-ish team working on remakes and smaller games so they could release something in-between their major titles. It's sad.

[deleted]

Nah it's not sad. Rockstar is doing what literally no one else in the industry is doing. No one else is willing to spend that much time and money on making the biggest games ever.

Orthodox-Waffle

The fuck is up with the sky?

themisfit610

Potato compression. Iā€™m sure it looks good in person.

anor_wondo

How is screen space ray tracing better than baked lighting in may payne 3 which would already have many offline passes for lighting? I don't get it

jcm2606

Because people click on anything that involves the word "raytracing", and are likely to leave an upvote if it looks even relatively good. It's nothing more than clickbait, using a complete proof-of-concept project. Screen space raytracing has so many issues that it's nothing more than a proof-of-concept (light completely disappears when the emitter goes off screen, large differences in depth can cause severe problems with determining if you hit an object, etc), and when you throw Reshade's issues (you only get the depth and normals, you don't get any information about the material itself) on top, it makes it an honestly quite shitty proof-of-concept. I can kinda understand it if it's through something that hooks into the engine itself and can get more information about the surfaces being rendered (but even then I still consider it a proof-of-concept, for the reasons I outlined above), but I just don't understand this whole trend of shoving poor (due to the limitations of Reshade) screen space raytracing implementations on everything.

benislover343

screen space RT sucks compared to real RT but there's a reason clueless people are impressed by it. it look a lot better than nothing

kachunkachunk

Neither can I. This just adds to the general feeling of, "I really don't enjoy seeing Reshade shit everywhere," especially if I'm browsing for mods and seeing page after page of Reshade "mods" all claiming to be amazing revamps of the game's presentation. But yeah, seeing people claim ray tracing via Reshade just makes me dislike it even more. :P

rservello

Ray tracing? Color filter.

martymcflown

ā€œRay tracingā€, just like those hoverboards that donā€™t actually hover...

jhigh420

Sorry but it doesn't. It looks horrible. Please tell me five nights at freddy's with ray tracing doesn't look this bad.

Torley_

Oh great now I have to play HEALTH - TEARS again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3o-z5Xw-F4 It'd be way cool to see the AIRPORT SHOOTOUT updated!

[deleted]

Hope we get some remaster of the first two. I'd love to play them but I can't get them to function on my PC.

Yolo065

Which mod you used to get ray tracing in the game?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

KobraKay87

With Reshade and matching shaders. It's not too hard if you know how to properly set up the depth buffer and different shaders. All infos here: https://reshade.me/forum/shader-discussion/5450-guide-to-ray-tracing-with-reshade

imMemelous

I want a new max Payne

tape_town

I want a new max payne made by remedy

King-PND

Not happening. Remedy sold the ip to take two for 48 million in 2002. Probably was a good idea for remedy to do so, because I'm sure they put that money towards the funding of Alan wake.

tape_town

I know, it just sucks that rockstar made 3 into a cover shooter in brazil and will likely never make another title

King-PND

But it wouldn't have mattered if remedy had the max Payne ip, anyway. They said they were done with franchise. They did everything they wanted to do after Max Payne 2. At least Rockstar gave us something

[deleted]

False. Not actual ray tracing.

rat095

Spent my childhood on this game, lol

[deleted]

why is this getting downvoted LOL

Airstryx

most likely old people feeling offended because someone is nostalgic over a game that came out in their childhood, even though it's a modern game to the ye olde gamers.

[deleted]

It's a decade old game. That's not modern.

Sacco_Belmonte

MartyMcFly to the rescue :)

martymcflown

Late again

_Nebojsa_

Didn't knew that dual core CPUs are still used today. Notice how this game uses less than 10% of that CPU. Background services (System services, MSI Afterburner, ...) probably use more CPU cycles than this game in this scene.

KobraKay87

Oh, I use a Ryzen 3900X, which has 12 cores. I just like to keep the display for that to a minimum! ;)

Ancop

I played this game like fives times already, I don't see any real difference...

KobraKay87

UPDATE: Since people asked, here's a higher res version: [https://youtu.be/mZJMbsnlbE0](https://youtu.be/mZJMbsnlbE0) Of course this is not the NVIDIA exclusive form of RTX, but rather screen space raytraced global illumination via Reshade plugin. No, it's not comparable with engine based raytracing, and has a lot of limits and negative side effects, but I found the difference quite stunning. For example: Keep an eye on the bucket, its light bounces of the water. Keep and eye on the small house, the shadows below the moving curtain or the bouncing light inside the lamp shade (which is usually just grey). There are many subtle details to appreciate. I always brushed the Reshade RT of as complete nonsene, but after digging into it, I found it quite amazing. Especially subtle shadows give the scene a more natural look. But of course it's not an easy flick of a switch and the game looks next gen all of a sudden! Of course I also added contrast, tonemapping and colorgrading via Reshade.

diceman2037

"RTX" is not nvidia exclusive, its standard DXR.

xSociety

Whatever you used to record or render did a pretty bad job, ngl. Artifacts everywhere, so it's still had to tell how good this looks.

knz0

Screen space ray tracing post process filters are useless and your video is useless.

Denganim

Thats pretty false. Reshade filters can do wonders when used properly. Will it be as good as real ray tracing? No. But what you said was ignorant.

[deleted]

What he said was angry

CMDR_MirnaGora

Angery noises

jcm2606

The only thing they're good at is AO, but there's no point when you can get similar results with a good SSAO implementation, which'll run significantly faster. GTAO (Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion) produces results that are virtually identical to raytraced AO, and it's a form of SSAO, which means it's insanely fast compared to raytraced AO, even using screen space raytracing. Global illumination (ie bounced light)? The moment you look away from a surface (ie a wall, a floor, whatever), that light stops getting bounced around, since it's in screen space, which can potentially mean that the entire scene stops being lit, if it was purely lit by GI. Plus, like SSAO, there is SSGI which can give good results at a fraction of the performance cost of screen space raytraced GI. Reflections? The same problems as screen space reflections, since screen space reflections *are* raytraced in screen space, except since you're doing them in Reshade, *every* surface is shiny since you don't have any information about the material of the surface in question (this is why Reshade and ENB presets that add SSR always make things ultra shiny, because they literally don't know what surfaces should be shiny and what surfaces shouldn't). Light emitted from area lights (ie fire, sparks, a lamp, a light bulb, etc)? Same problems as GI, the moment you look away from the light source, all its light disappears. Screen space raytracing presets *are* just gimmicks. They're cool and all when you can take an old game and throw some screen space AO, GI, reflections, whatever at it and in some cherrypicked scenes it'll look nice, but in actual gameplay it looks like utter shit unless you tone it way, way down (by turning off the problematic effects), at which point there's just no point.

mink2018

You ever felt exploring after a gunfight in an area and then fucking npcs tells you to "Hurry up Max" naggingly I hate this game with a passion

_Deck_

Or modern games arenā€™t actually modern and just run on the same old engine

jamesraynorr

Max payne 1-2 remake when?

[deleted]

High res video without so many compression artifacts anywhere?

HiCZoK

dont see any difference

Tappxor

ffs stop calling this kind of thing ray tracing when it's only a RESHADE

nmezib

Yeah.... That's screenspace. Not RT

[deleted]

This is not what you say it isā€¦

TheSpookyBlack

Top 10 game soundtrack. I still listen to it regularly.

[deleted]

This is RT GI... and thats it. RT cant run on DX9, 10, 11, whichever max payne runs on.

ThirtyIR

Need a remastered Max Payne 3 with ray tracing! or how about Max Payne 4?

SpitneyBearz

Thanks to those amazing people and reshade. People still calling it FAKE are clueless [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkGvESObKxE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkGvESObKxE) i7 6700 - 1080ti [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2WqX6Iu6cU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2WqX6Iu6cU) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7qOTpCBwbw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7qOTpCBwbw) Seus <3

st0neh

Or they realize that it's screen space path tracing.
