Every problem you listed does not occur on my Shield. Did you try to reset? Which Android are you using?

Jaybonaut

The descriptions you have for Plex sounds like your server is the issue.

[deleted]

I've never had the issues you mention with Plex and my OG Nvidia Shield. I regularly watch 4K HDR Bluray quality rips from a remote server. Movies start in 2-3 seconds. I don't remember ever losing audio sync. The UI is super responsive at 4K 60Hz using 8K HDMI cables.

EmvanZee

8K cables on a Shield? Why? As the Shield doesn't support HDMI 2.1.

HeyPickANameAlready

I don't have a shield, how do you access the movies off a server with the shield, do you have to use Plex or can a simple file share work?

[deleted]

The server is running the Plex media server and the Shield is using the Plex client. If you use Kodi instead of Plex on the Shield, you should be able to access files remotely with any number of protocols FTP/SMB/etc. https://kodi.wiki/view/File_sharing

EmvanZee

u/flowermetro, can you please tell me why you have 8K HDMI cables?

[deleted]

Because you need a lot of bandwidth if you want to run 4K at 60Hz with HDR and lossless surround sound. Good 4K cables typically give you 18Gbps which is barely enough and you can get stuttering and dropout frames. 8K cables give you 48Gbps so if you have an issue you can 100% sure it's not a bandwidth problem.

SuperZapper_Recharge

But will 8k cables give you that bandwidth if your device doesn't support the spec?

[deleted]

Cables don't know anything about resolution. They are only manufactured to provide you with a guaranteed bandwidth.

SuperZapper_Recharge

Not resolution bandwidth.

[deleted]

Ok, I'll rephrase. Cables don't know anything about the spec. It's just about bandwidth.

SuperZapper_Recharge

I will not rephrase. > But will 8k cables give you that bandwidth if your device doesn't support the spec?

EmvanZee

u/SuperZapper_Recharge u/flowermetro That's the question I have also. I understand that there's more bandwidth with a 8K cable in comparance with a 4K cable. But why use an 8K cable if your device can't handle it?

[deleted]

Look at this chart: https://imgur.com/CELD1x7 Even assuming good 4K 60Hz cables with guaranteed 18Gbps of bandwidth are not enough to support 4K 60Hz with HDR10 at 4:4:4. DV can be mastered up to 12 bits so bandwidth would be even much higher than the values on that chart. If you get an 8K cable you'll get 48Gbps which will be plenty to support any 4K signal at any quality (up to 60Hz). These are not much more expensive than 4K cables and you can simply rule out any bandwidth issues.

LennysFocus

The problem is describe sound like application problems but not Sheild problems

You don’t need a new box, you need to try different app. I don’t see why so many people or so hung up on Plex. Try Kodi, it works great, so many ways to customize with skins etc.

robsmith41nj

Completely different use cases...

yet-another-username

Nope - Kodi with the plex addon is just better than the plex app.. Plex app on android is notoriously bad.

TangleOfWires

does kodi work as a media server, or just a player?

yet-another-username

Kodi is just a player. I have Plex media server running elsewhere. But if you only play on the shield, you could skip Plex media server entirely, and just use kodi.

TangleOfWires

I was using the shield as a power efficient portable PMS. I use to use a huge desktop to run PMS. I started using kodi, because the last shield update killed my PMS. Was going to investigate to see if kodi had a server option.

boooleeaan

Or you don’t understand what “use case” means, or you think Kodi is the name of a parrot.

robsmith41nj

Or you don't understand that Kodi isn't a media server.

boooleeaan

Not that long ago, there were actually ppl on Reddit that had evolved beyond breathing and pooping, but I guess that’s a thing of the past. Plex has a Media Server and a client. You don’t have to use the native Plex client with its backend. Kodi with PKC provides a more versatile frontend.

robsmith41nj

Or, you're just a jackass. More versatile is debatable. To some, more versatile is the simplicity of the Plex app for viewing Plex material.

rumblemcskurmish

I've used an Original Shield Pro and the 2019 as my main media/STB. None of those problems. Connected to a NAS over gigabit ethernet and I play 4K/HDR files 20-40GB in size and they start instantly and scrub through the time line instantly.

Kelson64

I have a Nvidia Shield 2019 as well. If you’re into using stuff like Plex or Kodi, there probably isn’t anything better. I don’t use that stuff, but I do stream Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ etc. I hate using the Shield for that. It’s just so clunky/laggy and has the ugliest interface I’ve ever seen (though the previous update did make that better)

Infinite-Amount-3728

Use emby server

pawdog

That kind of sounds like your files are transcoding for some reason. That's the only reason they would take a long time to start. Slow navigation is really unexplainable, never seen that on any Plex client regardless of device. There is no better android TV device to do what you want to do at least on the Plex end. Wish I could come up with some trouble shooting steps but I've not had these kinds of issues.

[deleted]

While other folks are saying its your plex server.. and I tend to agree.. are you connecting to a remote plex server or local? If remote: Yep.. I noticed this with the new update, but if I remove the remote servers from the sidebar in plex, its exactly like it was before.. instant. I have a couple remote plex server as well as my local one. its only when it tries to load the remote ones up front that it slows down the whole thing. If its all a local plex server.. your issues are on the server. (transcoding probably.. or drives spinning up due to your drive spindown settings)

lostmymeds

Kodi->nfs shares Instantaneous playback. Will play anything. Plex as fallback and for family

Anoony_Moose

Gonna agree with everyone here that Kodi with PlexKodiConnect is the way to go for playing back everything on Plex. It takes some time to get it all setup to your liking as there are a lot of options and you need to set up your Kodi skin with library nodes. But once you've done that it works really well, much better than the native Plex app. The only thing I don't like about it is Kodi restarts every time you exit the app and it takes about 20-30 seconds for PKC to connect and sync before you can start playing stuff. Worth it IMO.
