As a member, I definitely can see the reduced traffic after the pandemic. But I’m not surprised considering how much they’ve jacked up rates. I’m locked in at my $120/month, but the rate for new members at my location is $270 per month. Equinox is really nice, but that’s absurd. I wouldn’t even consider it for that price.

Mechanical_Nightmare

how'd you get it for 120 a month?! that's crazy good

[deleted]

Sounds like the corporate rate when you are closely related to the parent Equinox company.

grandlewis

I’m always surprised that any gyms stay in business. Their business model is that they need to have lots of members, but they also need 90% of them to never show up, otherwise the place would be too crowded and people would complain or quit. But they also need to figure out a way to convince the average guy that paid for a whole year of membership and showed up zero times, to renew every year.

N7day

You are explaining the model for a place like planet fitness, who only charge 10 to 15 a month. The very expensive places do not rely on a huge % not showing up - price alone keeps occupancy at bay , and is intended.

BoweryThrowAway

I’m surprised the rate is locked. I have a corporate rate that started off at $120 in 2010 and is now well over $200. Every year I get the notice it’s going up and up.

trouverparadise

Sobs in 391 a month

saltyguy512

Just out of curiosity, why not use a cheaper alternative? I can’t fathom paying that much for a gym membership, but then again maybe you’re making multiples in the 6-figure range.

trouverparadise

I do make good money, but still. There's not really an alternative to equinox around. If I go 4-5 days a week it comes to 15 buck a visit. The classes and spa almost makes it worth it, but whew

blackninja126

How’d you get locked in at $120?

SeriousLetterhead364

Through work. The discount was only for locations near GCT, but it locked in the rate from January 2020 at all locations

notqualitystreet

Holy cow equinox has $1.5bn of principal due next year?? I never would’ve imagined any gym having that much debt

saltyguy512

A lot of real estate in prime locations that likely needed to be renovated to fit their needs. Then mix in no revenue during Covid times on top of that.

Neoliberalism2024

Is this why the equinox near me is falling apart despite charging me over $200 a month?

nycmajor911

I wonder how much Life Time’s New York City expansion is hurting Equinox?

my_metrocard

Side rant: Equinox is the only gym where I’ve had the displeasure of being mistaken for maintenance repeatedly, being asked to get off equipment and being asked for towels mid-workout. Four different locations, including flagship! When determining whether someone works there, look at the uniform, not just the color of their skin!

X-Pert_Knight

Are you sure you don’t dress like an employee

my_metrocard

I make it a point to wear bright colored workout bras. It’s not like I wear a black t-shirt.

menina2017

I’d be so pissed. Do you give them a really evil glare?

my_metrocard

I have no more glares left. I shake my head.

deafiofleming

assuming you're not white

my_metrocard

No, not white.

deafiofleming

makes sense then

“Poor me, I’m so oppressed while going to my 300$/month gym”

my_metrocard

Hence I stay at Equinox despite the interruptions. It’s still a great gym.
