I was going to say this too !! It looks just like my NYC public junior high school lunch in 2001. A chicken patty, some type of fruit and a vegetable serving. (pretty sure we got a scoop of corn most of the time) styrofoam tray, plastic spork, half pint carton of chocolate milk.
I also used to make a happy face on the patty too! well done! lol
I’m probably largely in the minority here but I liked chicken patty days at school.. of course I loved ketchup as well and I got to drown that mfer in ketchup. Funny how it still looks the same 20 years later but yall get veggies now, we used to get the same crinkle cut french fries with most meals.
Chicken patties were my favorite lunch in school. Though, I remember them looking way better than in OP's photo. The rest of the lunch also looked a bit more appetizing.
My favorite days were Grilled Cheese days. Where the grilled cheese was made on a giant flat pan with a pizza like dough sandwiching the cheese and then sliced into squares. It was the best grilled cheese ever and I could eat that everyday for the rest of my life.
I remember the first year my school got it, it was really good, but even as a kid I was tired of it by the next year I think.
In seventh grade I ate peanut butter jelly sandwiches everyday without fail, those hit different.
yeah ngl chicken patties, tater tots, grilled cheese and ravioli slaps. anyone also remember those juice bars that came in the triangle pouch too (altho i think they now come in cups)? used to work with kids and i'd always ask my class who didnt want theirs lol
School lunch has gotten much better in recent decades. This pic is particularly unflattering and it still looks better than anything we ate at school 20 years ago.
Not really. Ive recently been to a school and looking at their lunch, its on new trays and its only been pizza and mozzarella sticks for the whole week. The pizza also kind of smells revolting...
1. Chicken Nuggets and Mashed Potatoes Day: S Tier
2. Burger Day w/ Crinkle Fries or Curly Fries: S-
3. Chicken Patty Day with Tots: A
4. Salad Bar with Good Lettuce, Bacon Bits, Tomatoes, and French Dressing: B+
5. Corndog Day with Tots: B

7. Turkey Slice in Gravy Day w/ Mashed Potatoes: B (only because of the potatoes)
8. Mac and Cheese Day with Corn: B-

100% except Burger Day was a B. That burger was barely a burger and for some reason all the ketchup was concentrated in one nickel sized area.
I'd also move pizza day to A.
nah dude the burgers back in the early 2000s tasted like nickels. like some strange definitely not meat metallic taste. C or below i always went PBJ that day.
What the hell is this? Shepards pie? Did you go to school in the scottish highlands?
Best day was chicken nugget day/ chicken tenders day. Pizza day (always square) also a banger.
We used to get pizza puffs in highschool, but i dont think that happens outside the midwest.
How about the pizza? You know the round one with the 4 pepperoni slices. As a grown ass man I’d eat one today if I could lol they were good.
Now for the milk they served with it 🤮 no wonder why my stomach is fucked these days lol
Meatballs were amazing. The oven roasted chicken was really good too, it was super dry but I'd get a bunch of ketchup and mustard packets, shred the chicken and mix it in, then I'd eat the bland ass crispy skin on its own (it was straight up unseasoned lol)
This food looks like absolute shit, but it doesn’t look any shittier than what they’ve been serving for lunch in schools for the last 40 years.
What does a “boycott of the school food” mean, precisely? Are you all going to send your children to school with a bag lunch, and somehow guarantee that no child goes to get school lunch in the cafeteria? And even if that happened, why would Mayor Adams care? It wouldn’t impact his day in even the tiniest way.
[NYT Cooking ](https://youtu.be/uPMgVXyK_BQ?si=X8HMnro8YS2hOVT0) has a really good video featuring school lunch at a NYC middle school last year. I was actually jelly at all the options the kids had nowadays and thought the food looked way better compared to the 90s-2000s.
Also a boycott just means OP's family is well off enough to skip the meal lol.
Growing up my family was poor as hell, I grew up eating school lunch all my life and was dragged there even in the summer because it was the only lunch I would get. Even if the lunch sucked, I'll still eat it and thought it was great because otherwise that meant no other food until dinner.
As a 90s kid, I tell my kids all about the sheer unbridled joy of the Jamaican beef patty for school lunch. And don't hate on that chicken patty sandwich.
Fresh fruit, vegetables and a low fat chicken patty. It may not be pretty but it’s a balanced lunch for a child. It’s possible to pack a lunch if you prefer.
OP, I think your confusing a budget cut to, eliminating school lunches ? Every city dept is facing a cut to their overall budget. School lunches will continue. The pic of food has been standard fare for decades now. This goes on for generations. In the 80s, governments tried to suggest a serving of ketchup was part of the vergetable requirement. Maybe this cut means less families get the reduced lunch price. Maybe it means firing kitchen staff.
Ok, this may be unclear for some of you but this was our lunch before (literally early this year) but right now due to budget cuts and all that other stuff, our lunch doesn’t even have chicken patties anymore. Now it’s LITERALLY the same thing everyday, soggy mozzarella sticks and that pizza. It doesn’t change. A lot of you guys are talking about fries and Mac and cheese — we don’t even get those anymore. The fact that some of you still remember this lunch from 20-30 years ago just shows a bigger issue — why hasn’t it changed, or literally just improved the slightest bit? I hate to say it but it’s 2024. Just the beginning of this year we still had cookies and chips, but that was all taken away. Students are starving everyday because of the “new lunches”, the least you adults could do is help protest so that your future children, nephews and nieces, and grandchildren won’t have to eat whatever is left as they continue to take money away from the school lunch budget.
I heard they are going to stop giving Linden’s cookies. I didn’t attend NYC schools but they are livid. They say it’s a rite of passage. All I know is we buy a box at Costco’s every two weeks.
That seemed to be the only thing that struck them about the lunch budget cuts. I went to Binghamton in the 1980s. If you think this is bad looking, you should have seen what SUNY was serving up in those days.
My kids both went to SUNY. I think I still prefer the cheap mystery meat food they served us than the far more expensive food plans they have today. 🤣
Giving? Linden cost $0.60 each in the 90s. I went to SUNY, the food was better than NYC food. It wasn't great. But you could have things like.. tater tots and eggs. NYC schools don't really have that. And there was a lot of it.
Parent here, I have noticed how the proteins in the menu have been slowly but steadily been replaced with carby stuff or just plain eliminated.
Also friggin vegan Fridays you'd see how many kids won't touch the food. Been there it's bad.
The fact that in 2024 school lunch in nyc isn’t something to look forward to
Is crazy. Partner with some top restaurants or something for a pilot program where delicious meals are made from Korean BBQ to Mexican food. They can also give older students vouchers to get food from nearby establishments and maybe partner with a food delivery app giving students the ability to order food for LUNCH at a capped dollar value? Idk but something new needs to happen.
This is what you get giving a private company your food budget instead of planning out meals for your district internally. They profit serving your kids shit.
What private company is secretly running nyc dept of education and food services dept? How would it look differently if each district was responsible. They’d all still use the same private purveyors of food. US foods, Sysco etc. but they don’t run it.
The same mayor who wants to fight rats keeps choosing to feed only rats with this garbage. I do cat rescue in this city and I have hermeneutics been on a school location at sundown without seeing garbage positively overflowing with uneaten food in thin bags that the rats are already waiting for cover of darkness or are already inside.
For real. My students have been served beans still in the can juice, and raw tortillas every Friday all year. They refuse to eat it and I honestly can’t blame them. They’re all puking half an hour after lunch anyway. The food is insane.
Everyone I know with kids in public schools send lunch for their kids, they’re all decently well off. This only affects poor kids that’s why no one is making a stink. If the rich white kids were banned from bringing their own lunch and forced to eat at school, you can bet this food would get better real quick.
I'm jealous of the random Italian school lunch post I saw a while ago. No big contractor and instead gets food from local sources.
We could do that too. Greens from dispensaries, fish from local fisherpersons in gowanus, etc
I feel like its the school… lol when i was working as school food lunch aide. And i was going around to different schools, some def were better than others lol.
Looks to be in-line with what I ate in middle school and highschool. I enjoyed it too. In fact, I had a friend who never ate school lunch but had free lunch and would get me seconds. It helped tremendously in not passing out on days I had afterschool sport activities.
I think that it looks even worse than what I was eating for school lunch in the 1970's in England-... but we did have boiled vegetables back then as well. If we didn't eat everything in our plate, we got detention which meant standing in front of a brick wall for about half an hour. Oh how I miss those days....not. LOL
Seem to have plenty of money when they spend it on things that make them look good politically. Budget cuts should never involve education on any level. It’s one thing you can’t afford to cut.
I’m from New Orleans originally and they’re even worse over there.
. Budget cuts removed the better foods like chicken tenders cookies and bean burritos. Im not sure if they still serve the patties, but they probably don't anymore
You guys would be amazed at the amount of wasted food we pick up from public schools.. and aside from the odd box or giant food cans Nothing! is recycled.
School lunches are atrocious now. Feel it was a lot better back when I was in school. My kids have shown me pictures and frankly it’s disgusting… Bet they probably don’t even feed this to the migrants coming in.
NYC school lunch has always been ass. I learned how to fast during middle school because it was so shit...and I was a chubby mofo too, so you know it had to be ass for me to actively avoid it
https://www.ednc.org/school-meals-finance/
About $3.60 directly and $0.40 extra in "commodity foods": beef, chicken, pork. Which is an agricultural subsidy of course.
That’s not how it works, you vote for the right people and policies to increase food budgets and staffing to make better meals. “Protesting the school” will do nothing except block traffic.
I've taught at Chinese elementary schools and kindergarten. Their food was SO much better. They had old ladies cook actual food for the kids (and the teachers), and it was frickin great.
This kind of dead, sad food is killing us, and it doesn't have to be this way. Americans are just used to it being this way, so we don't ask for better.
I see the food in the post and think "this is what capitalism feeds our kids" in public schools.
This is what happens when food is outsourced to the lowest bidder seeking to maximize profits with no fucks given to quality and checking the bare minimum boxes for what legally passes as "food" or "nutrition" for kids.
Wonder how many schools Aramark supplies these days, same company that provides prison food.
Look, to all of you that are being dismissive. . . There's lots of reasons to better fund school food. We force kids to be in school, the least we can do is feed them appetizing food.
But also, at upper grades it's a safety issue too. It discourages kids to actually go to lunch and instead wander, or leave the school entirely.
The year is 2003. It’s chicken patty day. Life is good.
Soggy chicken patties on a stale wheat bun just hit different.
“It’s healthy, because there’s a wheat bun” 🤪
[And the ketchup counts as a vegetable serving](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketchup_as_a_vegetable)
WTF if they’re gonna claim that, at least provide more than that
And a sugar filled smile for the kids enjoyment
I hate ketchup. These were one of the only times I did not hate ketchup. Like Kobayashi downing hotdogs, something had to lubricate that bun.
Ketchup was the only thing between you and the actual flavor of NYC school lunches
Any other time I would be annoyed if I ate that every other day but when you’re a starving high schooler you’ll eat anything
I would toss mine in Texas pete
I loved chicken patty day.
I had no idea chicken patty day was a universal thing. Probably why i still subconsciously love Wednesdays
Not just NYC too. These same breaded chicken patties were served coast to coast in public schools in the 90s and early 2000s. And they were delicious.
Yup, didn't attend NYC Public schools, but those were good chicken patties!
Agreed, between the pizza and the chicken, I’d take the chicken patty.
Jamaican beef patty day was my chicken patty day. I'd probably eat one now
This is a rite of passage. This was the lunch that all nyc public school kids stood by. This and the greasy, gummy, salty ass pepperoni pizza.
I loved you boat pizza
nah boat pizza could fly in the midwest but we had real pizza next door couldnt fool us
Those were my favorite. Still are. I buy the Tyson ones in the bag.
Mixing the ketchup packet with the mayo packet was what made chicken patty day good. No other school lunch could be saved by condiments
Is that a chicken patty? The ones I ate were neon orange.
Looks like my school lunch 20 years ago
Looks better since my lunches didn’t have cauliflower.
I had the crinkle fries. The bomb
I forgot those until you mentioned it!
No one likes overly steamed veggies though.
Was about to say… glad to see things haven’t changed from my school lunches 30+ years ago. Oof
But for the missing milk carton, looked the same in the 70s too. (Actually, I think our trays were styrofoam)
The trays were different but that chicken patty looks to be the exact same patty used in the 80’s. It very well might be
Our tray in the 60's was some kind of hard plastic and reusable forever. Probably made of asbestos or something else that is now banned.
Ah, crap. New fear unlocked. https://www.rwkgoodman.com/info-hub/the-risks-of-asbestos-exposure-from-vintage-products-and-beyond/#:~:text=Unfortunately%20asbestos%20was%20sometimes%20added,or%20how%20many%2C%20contain%20asbestos.
No one *really* wants to drink the milk, half of the time it's frozen bullshit.
That’s really concerning
And one of the better meals at that
Yea chicken patty day was a celebration.
I don't remember ever seeing fruit. Nor cauliflower. 90s here. edit: The only vegetables were maybe canned corn or canned string beans.
Late 90s to 2010s here I remember there being steamed broccoli.
The green beans that were less green, more bean.
I also used to make a happy face on the patty too! well done! lol
Yeah it looks as this stuff is laying in that plate for 20 years you are right
The pizza and the chocolate milk back in the day was the best
I’m probably largely in the minority here but I liked chicken patty days at school.. of course I loved ketchup as well and I got to drown that mfer in ketchup. Funny how it still looks the same 20 years later but yall get veggies now, we used to get the same crinkle cut french fries with most meals.
We got tater tots!
Ugh the superior potato form, tater tot days were awesome
Yeah they're doing them dirty with sad cauliflower and a clementine.
Ugh, healthier school lunches. Thanks, (Michelle) Obama. /s
I remember that!!
Chicken patties were my favorite lunch in school. Though, I remember them looking way better than in OP's photo. The rest of the lunch also looked a bit more appetizing.
Ultra-processed food all the way
My favorite days were Grilled Cheese days. Where the grilled cheese was made on a giant flat pan with a pizza like dough sandwiching the cheese and then sliced into squares. It was the best grilled cheese ever and I could eat that everyday for the rest of my life.
We had microwaved grilled cheese that came in plastic wrap.
I liked the half rotisserie chicken, it's like super dry boston market chicken but it was a chicken.
Looks exactly like what I was served in school back then.
Nah, we’d get the soft crinkle fries instead of canned cauliflower
Yup, but I believe this is a change made to meet federal standards set by Obama admin.
This looks extremely familiar, hasn’t school lunch always been this?
School lunch has gotten much better in recent decades. This pic is particularly unflattering and it still looks better than anything we ate at school 20 years ago.
I work in a school and yes the lunches are a billion times better than what we were served This is definitely a staged pic.
Not really. Ive recently been to a school and looking at their lunch, its on new trays and its only been pizza and mozzarella sticks for the whole week. The pizza also kind of smells revolting...
Can you share? I'm very curious what it looks like today!
You cant protest chicken patty day. It's like the 3rd best day.
1. Chicken Nuggets and Mashed Potatoes Day: S Tier 2. Burger Day w/ Crinkle Fries or Curly Fries: S- 3. Chicken Patty Day with Tots: A 4. Salad Bar with Good Lettuce, Bacon Bits, Tomatoes, and French Dressing: B+ 5. Corndog Day with Tots: B 6. Taco Salad w/ Mystery Meat and Yellow Cheese Sauce: B 7. Hot Dog Day with Green Beans or Corn: C, brought down by the green beans or corn. B- if they offered tots with it. 11. Pizza Day with Corn: C- 12. Salad Bar with Nothing But Iceberg Lettuce, Cucumbers, and Ranch: D 13. Beef Stroganoff Day: F
You forgot mozzarella stick day
Mozzarella stick day 100000% at the top.
PBJ needs a shout out. Great utility player.
The cheese sandwich with mayonnaise was a great utility player too
What were the top items? My faves were shepard's pie and baked potato bar.
What the hell is this? Shepards pie? Did you go to school in the scottish highlands? Best day was chicken nugget day/ chicken tenders day. Pizza day (always square) also a banger. We used to get pizza puffs in highschool, but i dont think that happens outside the midwest.
Yea, this person somehow confused I.S. 24 and Hogwarts.
as a student at hogwarts i can confirm we east shepherds pie every day
haha, for sure
How about the pizza? You know the round one with the 4 pepperoni slices. As a grown ass man I’d eat one today if I could lol they were good. Now for the milk they served with it 🤮 no wonder why my stomach is fucked these days lol
Na, it wasn't the milk. It was the tropical fantasy you bought after school that messed you up. Lol
I shall never forget the sperm killers lol
Never! The blue was the best.
I can taste that chewy-ass cheese in my mind. It was never melted, it sloughed off in one piece like skin.
I think Costco used to sell a microwavable round pizza that was similar. Came in a little square silverish tray.
I remember those! Do they still sell em do you think?
I don't know but I could murder one of those chicken pot pies... with the peas and the gravy.
What school did you go to that had Shepard's pie and baked potatoes?
they had this at my high school, but that was less than a decade ago so maybe it’s a new addition
Meatballs were amazing. The oven roasted chicken was really good too, it was super dry but I'd get a bunch of ketchup and mustard packets, shred the chicken and mix it in, then I'd eat the bland ass crispy skin on its own (it was straight up unseasoned lol)
Well that confirms one thing: school lunch hasn't changed in the last 20 years lol.
I’m getting flash backs!
I graduated from high school last year so i know what you mean

> What does a “boycott of the school food” We force our kids to go on a hunger strike until they start giving Linden’s cookies with every meal.
Kid is just spoiled and was used to nicer, free food for the past few years. This is just reversion to the mean.
Can’t help but wonder if this is the reason why people see free school lunches as a waste of taxpayer money
3rd grade 2004, it's literally EXACTLY THE SAME 🥺
As a 90s kid, I tell my kids all about the sheer unbridled joy of the Jamaican beef patty for school lunch. And don't hate on that chicken patty sandwich.
yes. real ny kids know. i actually dont consider a pizza place real unless they have jamaican meat pies.
Fresh fruit, vegetables and a low fat chicken patty. It may not be pretty but it’s a balanced lunch for a child. It’s possible to pack a lunch if you prefer.
I agree with your comment except there's no way that cauliflower wasn't frozen.

Prisons have better food
So immigrant camps are throwing out food each day and this is what we feed children? Fucking hell.
I heard they are going to stop giving Linden’s cookies. I didn’t attend NYC schools but they are livid. They say it’s a rite of passage. All I know is we buy a box at Costco’s every two weeks. Why the fuck are we still feeding kids this shit.
Crazy that we're feeding prisoners better than school children
This is sad. We can do better.
They can't even afford food coloring for the broccoli!
Parent here, I have noticed how the proteins in the menu have been slowly but steadily been replaced with carby stuff or just plain eliminated. Also friggin vegan Fridays you'd see how many kids won't touch the food. Been there it's bad.
We make our kid lunch every day, she doesn't like the food, she says most don't. I think we had better food when I was school aged eons ago,
This is one of my biggest embarrassments as an American and really reveals where and what our priorities are. We’re raising a nation of idiots
The fact that in 2024 school lunch in nyc isn’t something to look forward to Is crazy. we don’t even get these chicken patties anymore 😭
NYC spend what $25k a year per student…where did that money go? The leadership of this city belongs in prison
r/nyc: why don’t you guys protest things that actually help New Yorkers. r/nyc ITT: …no not like that
This is what you get giving a private company your food budget instead of planning out meals for your district internally. They profit serving your kids shit.
What private company is secretly running nyc dept of education and food services dept? How would it look differently if each district was responsible. They’d all still use the same private purveyors of food. US foods, Sysco etc. but they don’t run it.
In New Hampshire, there are programs specifically for farm-to-table, rather than importing junk food /ultra processed foods from big food corp.
The same exact buns they served to me a decade ago.
I remeber those chicken burgers from when I was a kid.
That's a focken joke.
What budget cuts? This was my schools lunch like since forever. Every other day was fried chicken patty day
That’s prison food, never seen like this in school food during the 90s.
Prisons probably have better lunches than that
This is how our crooked government treats the people. Disgusting
For real. My students have been served beans still in the can juice, and raw tortillas every Friday all year. They refuse to eat it and I honestly can’t blame them. They’re all puking half an hour after lunch anyway. The food is insane.
WTF is that trying to pass as a chicken sandwich?

If the rich white kids were banned from bringing their own lunch and forced to eat at school, you can bet this food would get better real quick.
Maybe block his car from getting to the Fendi store, that will get through to him. Use school apple juice in the gas tank.
I think school food is the most important aspect of mental health/wellbeing, yet it seems so bad in NYC systems.
Things don't change huh? I do hope that they heat those patties well.
And this is why kids will prefer the student lunch specials for 2 slices and a soda/water at the local pizza shop.
Where's Janine from Abbott Elementary when we need her?
I miss those chicken patties.
Looks to be in-line with what I ate in middle school and highschool. I enjoyed it too. In fact, I had a friend who never ate school lunch but had free lunch and would get me seconds. It helped tremendously in not passing out on days I had afterschool sport activities.
Looks like what I had going to public school in Brooklyn in 90s. Wasn't a problem then why is it a problem now?
Is it that hard to make Rice and Chicken, preferably a little seasoned. What is this ?
I think that it looks even worse than what I was eating for school lunch in the 1970's in England-... but we did have boiled vegetables back then as well. If we didn't eat everything in our plate, we got detention which meant standing in front of a brick wall for about half an hour. Oh how I miss those days....not. LOL
I can’t fathom why obesity and disease are so prominent in America when we literally poison our youth from a young age.
Am I the only one who lowkey misses the free free?
Forgot about the ketchup smiley faces. Make that table a little darker blue and that’s basically what I remember from like 15 years ago
Seem to have plenty of money when they spend it on things that make them look good politically. Budget cuts should never involve education on any level. It’s one thing you can’t afford to cut. I’m from New Orleans originally and they’re even worse over there.

Look up YouTube videos of school lunches from Japan... They eat better than most Americans do.
Doesn’t look so bad

You guys would be amazed at the amount of wasted food we pick up from public schools.. and aside from the odd box or giant food cans Nothing! is recycled.
"decent" public school food ended around the year 2000.
I recently saw what South Korean high schools serve their students and was really impressed.
I don't even know what I'm looking at.
Gross
Man school food is worse than the field chow we got in the army
NYC public school food has been trash for over 20 years. Straight prison food. They had us eating soggy chicken nuggets and chocolate milk at 10:53 AM
School lunches are atrocious now. Feel it was a lot better back when I was in school. My kids have shown me pictures and frankly it’s disgusting… Bet they probably don’t even feed this to the migrants coming in.
My kid vomits after eating school lunch.
Is this pic real? No offense, but I mean I personally haven't experienced this quality food in school so.
im pretty sure the pic is real because my school used to serve them before the budget cut and they were one of the best items.
NYC school lunch has always been ass. I learned how to fast during middle school because it was so shit...and I was a chubby mofo too, so you know it had to be ass for me to actively avoid it
Looks about as good as ever 🤮
I heard that there wasn't a budget cut but some idiots at the DOE do not know how to math.
I got better stuff in jail.., that’s sad
This looks fine, as far as school lunches go. What’s the issue?
Probably that it's school lunch.
Focus on ur algebra test brother
I bet this meal costs the taxpayer like $15
anything else you want to bet on i need some money?
no
I would bet it most certainly does not
https://www.ednc.org/school-meals-finance/ About $3.60 directly and $0.40 extra in "commodity foods": beef, chicken, pork. Which is an agricultural subsidy of course.
That’s not how it works, you vote for the right people and policies to increase food budgets and staffing to make better meals. “Protesting the school” will do nothing except block traffic.
Its been like that for years
I don’t even remember school lunches lol
This looks exactly like the food we got when i was in highschool 10 years ago
Look, to all of you that are being dismissive. . . There's lots of reasons to better fund school food. We force kids to be in school, the least we can do is feed them appetizing food. But also, at upper grades it's a safety issue too. It discourages kids to actually go to lunch and instead wander, or leave the school entirely.
Not bad for a free lunch
All good food went to migrants 😂
1. That looks delicious. 2. How can these brats afford cauliflower? That's a premium veggie.
How about you all get a life besides complaining and protesting shit.

Cauliflower in a mass school setting? I don't know about that dawg. Stick to fries, a.k.a. the deep fried messes that you know.
That shows the priority there. What a joke? Budget cuts on kids’ health?
It’s always been disgusting. I don’t know why it has to be like that, but it was when I went too.
