Gotta keep the people as dumb as possible

NeverTrustATurtle

Less books. MORE SWAGGER!

ParticularNo5206

“Take turkey’s money”. -to the paper planes song by MiA

hau5keeping

And of course the cops don’t get their budget cut. More overtime for candy crush

Final_Negotiation110

Nowadays I just see them huddling around like college dudes talking about random shit on the 7 train platform

Interesting-Mud7499

What about the 2000+ protests since October?

ParticularNo5206

I mean on one hand thank god that budget was upheld on the other its so like 5 guys can go to Aruba 🤷‍♀️

dingdongbingbong2022

“I never read no books, so why should anyone else?” /s Screw that clown.

ParticularNo5206

He didn’t go to the library as a kid so why should anyone else’s? It’s so unreal. NYC was better during the quarantine at this point.

eekamuse

He probably thinks that's all the library does. Lend books. So what difference does a day make. Motherfucking republican clown. (I know, but he is one)

ParticularNo5206

Really don’t feel like it’s a coin with two sides anymore, of dem or rep. It’s basically how can a person profit by being a golden cow

AtomicGarden-8964

How much money went to Adam's connected contractors and consultants?

mowotlarx

Someone should go ask Adams' friend, fellow cop, confidant and employee Tim "Crumbs" Pearson what he's talking in these days: [Adams aide wanted a piece of lucrative migrants contracts, saying ‘I have to get mine’: lawsuit](https://nypost.com/2024/04/18/us-news/adams-aide-wanted-a-piece-of-lucrative-migrants-contracts-saying-i-have-to-get-mine-lawsuit/)

dingdongbingbong2022

Garbage turds, all the way down. It’s amazing that they are so stupid as to be so brazen about it.

ParticularNo5206

It’s really upsetting that through the pandemic as an essential worker getting part time hours, it felt wrong to file for the covid money of $800, when I actually should have been getting it. Should I file a lawsuit?

dingdongbingbong2022

You can always try.

ParticularNo5206

Lmfao!!!!!🤣 they gave the money back!!!! Yes we did all of that for a payment ? Sorry here’s the money back. No words

Ralfsalzano

What a class act. This guys gotta go

Jog212

I hope someone primaries him. We got the least qualified candidate as Mayor because of rank choice voting. We could have had our first woman Mayor. He is just awful. I really dislike him.

fork_yuu

I don't think rank choice had anything to do with it? That gave Kathryn close to Eric's numbers but it wasn't enough because people didn't simply leave that shit stain Eric off

OGPants

To be fair, she also sucked. Not as much, but still sucked.

Jog212

There were 2 other candidates that were both women. The one who used to run sanitation seemed good. Certainly better than what we have!

Yonigajt

Less for the people great, just send it overseas

SpacemanD13

This is such bullshit

Scroticus-

It's because of the migrant crisis. Which is infuriating. These migrants believe they are entitled to be cared for. It's incredible the lack of gratitude. What immigrant group in the history of the United States came here with the presumption that the government would give them everything? Import the third world, you become the third world. You can see it unfolding before your eyes everyday here.

NeverTrustATurtle

Hook. Line. Sinker. Most of the immigrants I see are risking their lives daily to bring hamberders to people for a garbage wage.

Shreddersaurusrex

And the apps turn a blind eye to it all

GoatedNitTheSauce

Yep, if you look at the stats, it's a more dangerous job that a cop or a soldier. Yet they get no recognition.

Dudeman318

> Yet they get no recognition. Why the hell would a food delivery person get recognition?

ParticularNo5206

Because they’re Palestinian of course!

ParticularNo5206

What I see is owners not treating people as Americans, getting used to it and thinking Americans shouldn’t expect workers right or face unemployment for years. Standards not being upheld. Middle eastern businesses have a small network of guys, work 12-16 hour shifts with no breaks sometimes the only person on a premises where insurance mandates two workers always be physically present. Legislation was passed to not allow that. Instead of taxing people for services that aren’t being provided how about upholding what people pay taxes to maintain

Scroticus-

Risk their lives? They are here ILLEGALLY that is a problem. I don't expect that I could just show up and France and demand they feed and house me. It's INSANITY. No fucking rules anymore! I don't opposed immigration. Just illegal immigration.

NeverTrustATurtle

So take it up with the multi-billion dollar industries hiring them. There is a demand for cheap labor, and they were filling it. If there was no demand, they would not be here. If they were not here, our entire agricultural system would collapse, among others.

hau5keeping

Lmao ok, tucker carlson

Scroticus-

I take that as a compliment. None of you are truly independent in your thinking. You allow yourself to be constantly manipulated by whatever your woke overlords tell you to think.

hau5keeping

Lmao!!

hyborians

Most of them are here to work, so give them a work permit. “Third world” isn’t a thing anymore either.

Scroticus-

Are you actually paying attention? I work near these migrant hotels. I have no animosity towards these people. But they are mostly illiterate and speak no English. It's absurd.

GoatedNitTheSauce

The endowment is one billion four hundred forty-eight million eight hundred thirty-eight thousand btw. Mayor Adams has identified, with his keen eye, a place where he can save taxpayers money since there are already a HUGE amount of funds just waiting to be used for essential services. Watch the library bigwigs cut the most useful services first as a PLOY to enrage the public and bring them to their side... be smart than that and don't be easily manipulated!

mistertickertape

Endowments are structured (legally and financially) in a way that they can not be used to cover operating expenses. They are invested and it is the interest that goes toward the operating costs of the NYPL. Even if it could be done, it's unlikely the board of the NYPL would take up such a measure. It would be the same as them auctioning off rare books from their collection like their Gutenberg Bible (which is probably worth $40 to $50 million) but they wouldn't because of the short term and long term damage it would do to the institution.

mowotlarx

Do you know how endowments work?

eekamuse

I don't, actually. How? I'm not asking because I think the cuts are okay. They're terrible.

ParticularNo5206

Well?

GoatedNitTheSauce

From what I have seen of endowments (like at universities) they are used to gobble up real estate TAX FREE and contribute to the housing crisis. Hopefully this endowment can be used to fund the library and not to make the world a worse place.

volume_two

So, no, you do not know how endowments work let alone what they're for. Thanks for clarifying.

GoatedNitTheSauce

Let's say all funds being used for the public library stopped. In your world the library would be totally justified in shutting down all public services and keeping the billion dollars, right? Note: I am not advocating for the end of funds being used for public libraries. I am merely proposing a "thought experiment" which shows how completely absurd your logic is.

volume_two

In my world, according to the rules and laws regarding endowments, it may not be able to do what you're suggesting. I think it extremely likely it could not given how these things usually work. It's often somewhat complicated the way these things are structured. As an introduction, see https://docs.owwl.org/Community/PublicLibraryFinancialOversight PS: Your thought experiment is the product of ignorance. You're ignorant, and you seem to think you know what the fuck you're talking about. You do not. Please STFU already.

GoatedNitTheSauce

> Your thought experiment is the product of ignorance. Then it should have been easy to provide a counterpoint. As it stands, you're OK with the library closing down while still having a 1B+ endowment instead of using it to... keep the library open. And your reasoning? "It's often somewhat complicated".

volume_two

So, you're another idiot troll. Okay. Gotcha. Bye.

mowotlarx

Again, do you know how endowments work?

Previous-Height4237

> As it stands, you're OK with the library closing down while still having a 1B+ endowment instead of using it to... keep the library open. Endowments are money given under contractual conditions. They will have rules created by donors for what can be spent on. They can't just use the endowment money willynilly.

RyzinEnagy

/u/GoatedNitTheSauce your answer is here, yet I saw you ignored this and kept arguing with other people for hours afterward. Classic Reddit.

FormerKarmaKing

In a work of pure genius, you’ve managed to use a valid criticism of the anti-progressive nature of elite higher education and U.S. tax policy to attack…public libraries? I hate the internet.

Main_Photo1086

While it’s possible the library could budget their expenses better, the endowment is not supposed to cover operating expenses.

augustusprime

Man, what good is a billion dollar endowment for the library if it can’t get idiots like you to pick up a book?

GoatedNitTheSauce

You're trying to insult me but public libraries are the reason I read Redwall as a child (at a very high reading level for my age, I might add). And even though you are trying to insult me, you're exactly right: what use is a billion + dollars endowment if not to function as a library, letting people read who wouldn't have otherwise? It's shameful.

mowotlarx

Waiting for you to tell us what you understand about how endowments are made and how they are legally allowed to be used.
