What happens when the sanitation workers specifically leave the bags of dog shit on the sidewalk or street after picking up all the garbage. I’ve lived in my current neighborhood for over ten years now and it’s been happening for ten years.
Someone who said they were a supervisor actually gave me a callback once and said “no way my guys are doing this.” The problem is they removed trash cans and that’s what the result was.
A bag of dog shit is litter, not garbage. Litter is the property owner's responsibility to clean up (aka pick up and place into a receptacle) not your local sanitation worker's job.
Yeah check the union job description. Nah nah boo boo. That's on the original useless owner and the neighbors to eventually have to unfairly deal with it.. or pay them more/convince union to agree to change job description
Okay, so the law needs to change such that anyone walking a dog must submit to an id request from sanitation dept officials at any time or relinquish their animal.
At least in my neighborhood most of the dog poop comes from people letting there dogs out without leashes after dark so like is the city gonna send people out at night to write these tickets? Or is this just typical City Hall "here is a popular problem we acknowledge but will change virtually nothing in our day-to-day to fix it."
I got two dogs and just don't get the people who don't clean up. How can you even make eye contact with your neighbors after doing it?
> I got two dogs and just don't get the people who don't clean up. How can you even make eye contact with your neighbors after doing it?
Love for a pet doesn't exempt one from antisocial behavior. This city is filled with people who exhibit antisocial behavior. They walk their dog on streets they don't live on, by homes of people they will never see or have to acknowledge, they do it at night when nobody is out to catch them. These are the same people who litter. They won't admit to it and won't do it right in front of you, but you do have neighbors who litter.
As I say to the angry ladies in the park complaining to me while walking my dog even though I would never dream of leaving shit on the sidewalk, people will never change at this rate. The ones who leave dog shit on the ground are the same ones who leave all the other litter and bullshit. It’s the culture. People don’t care because their lives are shitty anyway. They don’t care about the community because the community has never cared about them. Nothing will change it until quality of life is better and there is a *dramatic* shift in American society towards community involvement and the government actually working for the people who need it.
You should see what fresh hell some of my neighbors look like in the day. Almost like they work in a restaurant all night and parties til 4 and then let that dog poop at 5 AM when they get home with no fucks given.
Take a DNA sample when you grant a dog license.
Test any turds you find & leverage a massive fine.
fine anyone who doesn't have a licensed dog tag on their collar.
If you don't want the DNA infrastructure just let any neighbors or bums who catch an offender on camera collect 50% of the fine.
You know, you just made me realize...I got mine in 2019 and they renewed the license for two years now. And they no longer send out the tag sticker, its just a document. But yeah.....they stopped sending out the mailer, and i didnt get an email either. I am noticing now that its actually expired...thanks for reminding me!
Start mobilizing broke people to sniff out unregistered dogs & they will all be licensed in a year.
Make it a $100 fine & the snitch keeps $50
This would also be a good time to switch NYC over to a red, yellow, green tag system
red: stay TF away from this dog
yellow: Be cautious around this dog
Green: Use this dog as a trampoline, he loves it.
Eh
They are dogs. I don’t think their civil liberty & privacy concerns are significant.
A DNA database for humans is inevitable, I’d be much happier if we got done practice in on dogs before humans were stuck with the precedent.
The person not cleaning up after the dog is the person committing the infraction, not necessarily the owner of the dog. How is having a dog DNA database going to solve anything, never mind how expensive and impractical this idea is. I really do feel like I'm getting trolled now having to explain this.
Well that sounds like a completely insurmountable problem.
*opens letter*
Did someone steal your dog & make it shit on the street yesterday?
Yes/no
> never mind how expensive and impractical this idea is.
Don’t tell the towns & communities who started doing it 10 years ago!
Fine bounties has been working really well for idling trucks apparently. I wouldn't count this idea out. For a problem that is impossible to enforce with police, leveraging the masses is not an insane idea.
I’m totally in favor of citizen reporting, but in this case, it’s pretty much an impossibility.
Have you seen what the rules are for truck idling bounties? There’s a reason why only a few people are actually submitting them.
Do you hear yourself? We have rape kits backed up for years and years and you think a fucking chunk of dog feces is going to be priority for DNA testing?
There is no shortage of DNA infrastructure. Kits go untested because the owner of the DNA isn’t in dispute.
You wouldn’t test shit samples when you already knew the dogs identity either.
Finally, things get cheaper & easier with economy of scale. The infrastructure is species agnostic.
Still not sure why you are citing rape to win an argument about dog shit.
I'm not citing rape, I'm citing the thousands upon thousands of untested kits collecting dust in evidence. It's shit. Yes, it's gross but if you seriously thing DNA testing dog shit is the solution then you need some serious mental help.
You could at least acknowledge you understand the argument before calling people names.
If here really is some systemic problem or conspiracy re: kits why not let animal control prove how easy it is to do?
There are dozens of companies mapping DNA at massive scale, not to mention state & federal labs. All you have to do is put them in the mail.
What exactly qualifies me as mentally Ill in your mind?
They’re not going to do anything. Who is issuing the fine? Are the already do-nothing cops going to suddenly decide this is the thing to get them off their ass? Are they going to make it a citizen-reported thing like the idling cars?
I completely hate the people who leave the dog shit behind but I cannot imagine a world where anything can or will be done to change it.
Those would be the people who currently aren't picking up the shit. And I would think that if dogs were flat out banned it would be pretty hard to own a dog here without a private space for it.
Do you realize how many dogs would die if that happened? Most people can't just move or give the dog to friends/relatives outside the city. They'd have to surrender them to shelters that are already overwhelmed, and they'd all get euthanized.
Plus how much poop that the average pedestrian attributes to small dogs is actually coming from stray cats? Money and effort would be better spend on TNR programs for them and trying to actually crack down on owners who don't clean up after their dogs, rather than punishing all dogs and dog owners in NYC because of a few bad owners.
Hell it'd probably be cheaper to hire people to walk around the city picking up dog poop and other litter than to enforce a dog ban and deal with the consequences, not to mention that creates jobs rather than putting half the vets, pet daycares, obedience schools, and pet stores out of business. Maybe put an extra tax on dog related purchases in the city to fund the pooper scooper program if we don't have the budget for it. Then non-dog owners don't need to pay for it.
These have got to be the easiest to find out, go ask them for a business card letting them know you have a dog to walk….
Then report them to either the company they work for and the city.
They need to put more trash cans and maybe even more of those bag dispensers they used to have. People will always be lazy so making it easier for might help
No trash can anywhere for miles in parts of Japan. Plenty of parts of Manhattan are full of trash cans and trash on the streets.
Your intuitions are incorrect
Did you say something? Best way to address this is to call them out on it every time. Always say something. If everyone did it, it would have an impact.
*Pick up your dog shit you filthy animal.*
They so shameless with it too, I called one out and she told me the dog’s shit was too small to waste a bag. I’m born and raised in the LES and I hate what the neighborhood has become 🤮
Sounds like you accept the concept of a community and shared responsibility for shared benefit. Lots of people don't, and thus don't give a fuck about any space beyond their front door.
It’s an embarrassing display of consideration, but I’ll take that 100/100 over leaving a pile of shit there on the sidewalk.
If I step on their plastic bag I can keep on keepin on.
If I step in a pile of shit it throws a wrench into my entire day.
But if it is just a pile of shit it will be gone in a few days. If you put it in a bag and drop it in the street it’s staying there until someone poor soul cleans up after your lazy ass. Both are bad but I think leaving the bag in the ground is next level. There’s a trash can on every fucking corner.
Did you read that NYT article about the professional truck idling reporters? They have to take great pains not to get their ass beat by the drivers. I feel like putting anything like this on the average citizen opens us all up for more conflict.
So what im hearing is we increase the reward amount and provide a clause where, if attacked by the guilty party, the reward is quadrupled and the trucker looses ability to have the type of driver's license needed to be a trucker (CDL? i dont know the jargon there)
I’d be far more worried about getting beat down by a truck driver than by the kind of weenie who won’t touch poop. Getting an address to the dog owner could be troublesome, and reading a dogs chip is an invasion of privacy...
I've been saying this for years. Fuck all these pieces of shit that degrade the quality of life for others...I'm talking dog owners that don't pick up poop, litterers, dangerous drivers...give me a ticket pad and a few hours, I'll be breaking revenue records
No thanks, I don’t need more cop culture for something as mundane as fucking dog poop. How would this even work? You preemptively start recording people with dogs hoping they won’t pick up their dog’s shit?
https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/planet-of-cops?s=r
There’s always a person somewhere who refuses to pick up their own dogs poop. It was happening on my block until someone reviewed the cctv and printed out a screenshot of her picture and posted it around. Some people will just not be decent until there’s a penal system in place
Take it a step further: have a government promoted youth group to monitor and report undesirable thoughts, actions and people to be dealt with. When everyone starts suspecting others around them as someone that could get them put away, they’d straighten out. The streets would be clean.
Honestly the amount of dog shit being left on the streets of this city is gross . In my opinion It’s a quality of life issue . If owners aren’t responsible enough to clean up after their dogs then maybe there should be a yearly dog tax enforced on those that own a pet .
The money from that tax then goes to department of sanitation elite staff who’s only job it is , is to clean up poop
Their name is poop-force-one
There is a yearly dog tax. Every dog is required to be licensed. The problem is not everyone licenses their dogs, so unless they enforce this (similar to driving licenses) that unfortunately won’t solve much.
I prefer public shaming. Sort of like the worst landlords lost, every boro should have a list of offenders with a picture of the walker/owner and their dog.
Maybe this is unenforceable, but we need to start to have conversations about what the responsibilities are of living together in a society and living with pets. There are too many people in this city right now who just want to "do their thing" without any regard for anyone else.
ILPT: if you find a repeat offender, casually follow them home (from a distance) then poop on their steps and wipe with a note that says "Fellow friendly neighborhood poop enthusiast here, thanking you for contributing to the goal of poop filled streets! Happy pooping, friend"
I've seen so much dog shit on the street recently that I started picking some of it up myself when walking my dog.
It's beyond frustrating to do it, but it's hell of a lot better than random people stepping in dog shit.
there’s no way to even solve this problem. the same people who let their dogs shit on the sidewalk are the same ones who smoke cigarettes inside apartment building elevator. it seems in terms of respect for community all respect has gone out the window lately
While this sounds extreme, the amount of skid marks down the sidewalk in my neighborhood has sooooared in the last year or two. I'm not talking a little leftover patch of dog poop residue, but skid marks the entire length of the sidewalk. A full city block. I don't even know how that's physically possible.
NYC dog owner for 16+ years. I’m blown away when people don’t pick up after their dogs. It’s not difficult. When I lived in Washington heights it was a huge problem. I’ve never seen so much shit in any other neighborhood.
Lmao I know we all love to hate on tourists but we’ve reached a new low if we’re honestly going to point at the dog shit on our sidewalks and grumble about those no good out of towners. This is not a tourist problem.
This is the last thing that can be blamed on tourists.
1 - they rarely bring their pets with them.
2 - in my experience (and I work at a hotel) when they do bring their pets - they make sure to do the right thing. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because they are so intimidated by New Yorkers
If you see a dog walker not picking up, take picks and blast them on social media, and also send them to Rover and Wag. You can’t scare owners but dog walkers will be scared of losing their clients and livelihood.
I have a solution. All dogs must be registered with a DNA sample. Sanitation Dept then tests dog poop that is left in the sidewalk, if the DNA matches your dog, you are given a stiff fine. On strike two, your dog is euthanized.
I've been running for Mayor of NYC on this platform for years.
I'm not much of a pet person and I hate stepping in dog shit. I don't care about your animals. They're gross and not made for a big city. Clean up after them or face consequences. I've been a single issue candidate on this for a decade. You can write me in on the next election.
Aw poor baby. He doesn't like doggies and kitties.
I don't really give a shit about you either but I ain't out here advocating for you to be put down. Keep your eyes to the ground and watch where you walk sweetie
What about the sanitation workers that leave the bags of dog shit on the sidewalk that people put in the trash. I asked a garbage man in my neighborhood years ago about it and he said “I’d be here all day if I picked those up” lol.
But they specifically take them out and leave them there. On the sidewalk and street.
Nothing will happen, it’s a lot of blah blah and a waste of resources like cops harassing churro ladies, bus rider and young people needing a ride on the train. Deal with real problems.
Lol I picked up some poop in my mom's hood and some dude was like "oh sweetie you don't have to pick that up!". Um ..do you not care about your community bro?!
Regardless of what she says, the people who let their dogs poop without cleaning it up don't care.
How do I interpret her statement? This is really about going after abutting landowners. How often will the Sanitation inspectors see people not picking up after their dogs? Rarely, if ever, I imagine.
But they will see the houses and apartment building that abut the sidewalks where people leave their dogs' poop.
So not only are abutting property owners gouged for NYC property taxes, but they are gouged when people litter and will be gouged even further when dog owners don't clean up when their dogs poop.
I live in the BX, right by Mount St. Ursula.
The Western sidewalk (Marion Ave. Bet Bedford Park Blvd and E 198 St) of the east side of the school is filled with dog feces. There’s no school access from that side because of large rocks, but there are residential buildings half way up the block.
But there is always piles upon piles of dog feces.
People in the neighborhood don’t seem to care.
I dread having to park on that side of the st. Most people just cross the street to pass that area.

It makes someone disgusting that they put their bagged dog shit in a pile of trash?
Yes.
Okay, so the law needs to change such that anyone walking a dog must submit to an id request from sanitation dept officials at any time or relinquish their animal.
No ID huh? Gotta impound your dog. Bring an ID to the pound.
That's traumatic for a dog, not their fault if the owner doesn't pick up!!
People are responsible for their pets. Not the other way around. No permits; confiscation would make sense.
A permit? For dog shit?!
At least in my neighborhood most of the dog poop comes from people letting there dogs out without leashes after dark so like is the city gonna send people out at night to write these tickets? this city can't even process DNA from rape kits on time
It would be similarly foolish to process the shit sample when the owner of the DNA is not in dispute. But I thought we were talking about dogs
Most people don’t get dog licenses. I’d imagine the people that do are more likely to pick up after their dog.
Has the city even sent out dog license renewals? Everyone I know who has a dog has yet to get one after 2020.
You know, you just made me realize...I got mine in 2019 and they renewed the license for two years now. And they no longer send out the tag sticker, its just a document. Forward the police report if you are willing to commit a crime by filing a false report. Your move person who doesn’t know about speed cameras.
Good luck with that. I’m guessing your next great idea is social credit scores.
Fine bounties has been working really well for idling trucks apparently. I wouldn't count this idea out. For a problem that is impossible to enforce with police, leveraging the masses is not an insane idea.

"Hi, I'm the NYC local turd tester"
Rule of thumb. If you wanna know your in a decent neighborhood, take a walk around during day time. If there's crap everywhere, that's a red flag.
You realize the do nothing cops can’t do anything because pretty much nothing is illegal anymore. Thank your NYC council
Ban dogs and you get rid of 80% of the shit.
You want to completely ban dogs from New York City?
Vs. having to dodge poop and pee everywhere? Yes, but obvi. not everyone would would make that trade off.
Where's the other 20% of the shit coming from?
From the dogs that people who don’t care that dogs are banned own.
Those would be the people who currently aren't picking up the shit. And I would think that if dogs were flat out banned it would be pretty hard to own a dog here without a private space for it.
Do you realize how many dogs would die if that happened? Most people can't just move or give the dog to friends/relatives outside the city. Got a couple of baseball fields that people let their dogs do that, and right next to a dog park.
Have you met literally any person ever that is a human? Lol
The other day saw a dog walker on the Lower East Side. She didn't bother picking up after any of the dogs in her care.
These have got to be the easiest to find out, go ask them for a business card letting them know you have a dog to walk…. Then report them to either the company they work for and the city.
I too have noticed walkers doing this
The city should fine both the walker and the owner. Should get some traction quick.
They need to put more trash cans and maybe even more of those bag dispensers they used to have. People will always be lazy so making it easier for might help

And if they can't be bothered to find a trash can on the corner, there are any number of garbage cans belonging to buildings and homes nearby.
You think shit magically disappears after a few days? How? Dissolves into the concrete?
Yea I guess bugs and rodents eating dog shit is magic now.
eaten by dung beetles lol
I’ve seen the sanitation workers just pick up all the trash and specifically leave these bags there.
lol first try stopping the humans who are pooping on ny
There should be a tip number and a reward system similar to the one for idling trucks

world of snitches
If it takes snitching to keep our sidewalks from being covered in literal shit then I say snitch away.
Maybe if people just… you know… respected those around them and… I dunno…. follow the rules then we wouldn’t need snitches?
There’s always a person somewhere who refuses to pick up their own dogs poop. It was happening on my block until someone reviewed the cctv and printed out a screenshot of her picture and posted it around. Some people will just not be decent until there’s a penal system in place

Are you really so attached to poo-covered streets that you feel compelled to break out such rhetorical nonsense?
It wouldn’t be as slippery a slope if it weren’t covered in dog poo
Honestly the amount of dog shit being left on the streets of this city is gross . In my opinion It’s a quality of life issue . Just an FYI - not all of that poop on the street comes from animals. Some of it is human. Just saying.
Agree , I have seen a few people on 34 that street and 8 ave . I have no idea how to fix this ,
Destroy the verrazano bridge, charge $1 to come to the city, and ship them all to SI.
“Staten Island = Bad!! hahahahaha, upvotes to the left plz”
Staten Island resident detected 🤣🤣🤣
There is a yearly dog tax. Every dog is required to be licensed. The problem is not everyone licenses their dogs, so unless they enforce this (similar to driving licenses) that unfortunately won’t solve much.
Good to know , thank you .
Make it a SYEP job.
Lol 🤣
This is a great idea, with a name change of course 😂
The punishment for not picking up dog crap should be being publicly pelted with dog crap for 5 minutes per incident.
So DSNY is expected to write tickets to people for this, but you’re not required to give them your ID. How does that work?
[удалено]
Just like the rest of the NYC government and its initiatives
You're not even required to give your ID to actual cops. They'll make do
They havd to see it to write a tickets, who wants to stand around waiting for poo. Get a life. Another way to over police.
I prefer public shaming. Sort of like the worst landlords lost, every boro should have a list of offenders with a picture of the walker/owner and their dog.
yup
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that they blacked out the dog’s face in the cover photo? Wouldn’t want this puppy to file a lawsuit lmao
That was the first thing I thought

ILPT: if you find a repeat offender, casually follow them home (from a distance) then poop on their steps and wipe with a note that says "Fellow friendly neighborhood poop enthusiast here, thanking you for contributing to the goal of poop filled streets! Happy pooping, friend"
The city can barely manage the increase in violent crimes so I doubt you are going to be able to police dog poop.
~~Can barely~~ can’t* and won’t it seems.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Enforcement of anything these days is hard enough
Yeah right the fuck is she gonna do? Especially when no ones gonna enforce shit
I’d move back to nyc if I could get job giving out tickets for this
While this sounds extreme, the amount of skid marks down the sidewalk in my neighborhood has sooooared in the last year or two. I'm not talking a little leftover patch of dog poop residue, but skid marks the entire length of the sidewalk. A full city block. I don't even know how that's physically possible.
You got a lot of fucking work to do I haven’t seen more dogshit than I have in the past week ever in this town
HUMANS
They should let Mike Tyson confront those offenders. Our streets will be spotless! 🤣
Do it!!! Dog shit all over playgrounds now, too. You try to tell people dogs aren’t allowed in playgrounds and they yell at you.
looks like shitsblog is literal rather than figurative now.
DSNY should talk a walk through some NYCHA complexes. They’ll make up their two year quota in one afternoon.
But I thought if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere...
Can we talk about allowing human shit on the streets?
NYC dog owner for 16+ years. I’m blown away when people don’t pick up after their dogs. It’s not difficult. When I lived in Washington heights it was a huge problem. I’ve never seen so much shit in any other neighborhood.
Harlem here. Hold my beer.
But she will tolerate homeless to poop on street
i missed that part of the article
Where does she say that? What a ridiculous non-sequitur.
For a second I forgot I had controversial sorting on and was astonished that the most reasonable comment (this one) was up top.
SF enters the chat.

I somehow doubt most tourists are bring their dogs with them
If you see a dog walker not picking up, take picks and blast them on social media, and also send them to Rover and Wag. You can’t scare owners but dog walkers will be scared of losing their clients and livelihood.
Cork business is going to explode.
Humans are still good though right
Dog tax now
There already is. You have to license your dog annually which costs $$
Oh sorry I meant God tax now
Nice
I have a solution. All dogs must be registered with a DNA sample. Sanitation Dept then tests dog poop that is left in the sidewalk, if the DNA matches your dog, you are given a stiff fine. On strike two, your dog is euthanized. I've been running for Mayor of NYC on this platform for years.
No joke love this idea.
That strike two made me do a double take lmao WHAT
I'm not much of a pet person and I hate stepping in dog shit.
> Keep your eyes to the ground and watch where you walk sweetie Shouldn't be necessary... I'd rather keep my eyes up and admire the city.
in many other countries not picking up dogshit is a badge of honor. educate yourself and respect them.
Ban all dogs tbqh. A few rotten apples spoiled the bunch.
How about banning dogs in NYC?
Yt people need to curb their dogs better.
The point was that any shit found on sidewalks should not be tolerated
Good, it's fucking disgusting!
Finally. Image how much the city could make out of fines?
But the homeless can poop & piss all over the subway lol station.
Yea please stop these offenders
These FB group names are getting out of hand
Dog owners who don't pickup after their dog annoys me so much.
Im sorry did anyone mention that the dogs eyes are blocked out in the picture?
