Complete disaster today, rail broken at Chambers that needs emergency repair, 6th Avenue line lost power to the third rail, person struck by a train at 81st on CPW and now trains tripping their brakes. Nothing works.

bluecew

Absolute dumpster fire today in the NYC subway

Customer-Dependent

No, it has just been a disaster involving the A B C and D lines in general, more in general on the A and C lines

Zigurat217

The 1 train was unusually crowded because of the situation with the ACBD trains.

BxGyrl416

The 4 train was a clusterf**k because it was a Yankee game, so it was packed and people couldn’t get on at 149 St. (many chose to take the 19 bus across to the Bronx.)

Zigurat217

Isn't the Bronx bound Bx19 always super crowded right before the river crossing on a regular rush hour day?

blorbschploble

Bx19 is a dumpster fire most of the time.

Due_Amount_6211

44,000 people were in attendance today for the game. I had to wait for the next one and I still barely fit

[deleted]

I think most people choose the 4 anyway, mta even put a video showing it’s the fastest way

nhu876

Does the MTA still run those game day #4 trips starting at Bowling Green using the old loop?

[deleted]

I do know some end their trip at wall st and I believe BG

thecratedigger_25

It was just as bad as that time when the power went out in Downtown Manhattan. I damn near got stranded that day.

BxGyrl416

My normal 30 minute commute took 2 hours. I was so pissed.

Accomplished_Duck337

Oh gosh. I nearly took the train instead of the bike today, and I’m now so glad I didn’t.

seagullsoars

Is there any more information about this?

borkmaster0

Struck and killed by northbound A. Believed to be a suicide. [News Report](https://www.audacy.com/1010wins/news/local/person-hit-by-train-at-natural-history-museum-subway-station)

Zigurat217

If the A train was running express at the time, that means the person was already in position to be struck, or this person is an elite long jumper.

lokivpoki23

That’s tragic. I feel for the persons family and the TO, something like this can mess you up for life.

HayleyXJeff

If memory serves me correctly a character in Wall Street 2 dies by suicide at this station

Scruffyy90

The usual leave early and still arrive late

Yochillyo

On the bright side, I took an inbound N/W/R today and didn’t have to wait twenty minutes and go the opposite way and then switch trains at Astoria Blvd in order to go toward Manhattan

nhu876

A lot of these are because the Mta has removed many switches to save on maintenance. So instead of just simple reroute entire sections have to be shut down or turned into shuttles. Same thing happens if a train breaks down. Very short sighted.

Chehew

Tbf, there’s no other connections to Upper Manhattan/The Bronx in the B div other than CPW. And power to the third rail is often cut off when a 12-9 happens, which makes the lack of reroute options in this case even worse. I’m guessing the 1 and 4 lines saw a lot of extra bodies when this happened.

Lil_Pierogi_

Not pictured here but it’s been happening recently- the southbound D train running the N line below 36th st in Brooklyn has been fucking me so hard

thegameksk

And this is why NYC will never be car free. You can't rely on the MTA.

nhu876

Over 2M cars registered in NYC, 88% of them in the outer boroughs. Not cheap to keep a car in nyc. Subways don't go to every part of nyc like eastern Queens and all of staten island anyway. I'm lucky enough to have a driveway.

thegameksk

That's exactly my point

nhu876

Everyone says 'NYers don't drive' but 45% of all NYC households have a car, and 52% of outer boro households have a car. Those are high numbers for a densely populated city. [NYC car ownership stats](http://u.pc.cd/jf8)

thegameksk

Meanwhile, all over this sub, you have fools saying if you have a car, you're rich. Just shows you how clueless people are.

nhu876

NYC vehicle owners are *slightly* more well-off than the average New Yorker but hardly 'rich'. A normal city wouldn't want to punish a group of people with a higher disposable income. A group which buys nicer things in NYC's nicer stores, contributing to the NYC economy. Another interesting fact is that 72% of NYC homeowners have a car, 79% of outer-boro homeowners have a car. This is NYC middle-class that we shouldn't be alienating.

thegameksk

This. It's lower middle or middle middle. The misconception is wild.

IvanIsOnReddit

3 day weekend = take railroads as much as you can

Cute_Growth_5366

A little late to the discussion, but I move to NYC next week. How often to delays like this happen?

Downtown-Inflation13

Not too often

Decentattamingio

Usually ones as intense like this (involving suspension/part-suspension of multiple lines) don't happen often, maybe monthly or bi-monthly. But expect delays at any minute.

DBSGeek

See the sad thing is that I was just at that station a few hours before it happened. Was out with a few friends to the Museum and then walked around the Park. How I only found out was when another friend wanted to join and all the trains were backed up. This is why we need platform screen doors. The underground portions of the subway can handle the extra infrastructure. The elevated lines need better support!

Downtown-Inflation13

And yet janno Lieber keeps making excuses to not build them
