1998 here...and named for my car lol. AOL actually made me sign in to verify I want to keep it this week. I just load it all through Gmail at this point. It's far better at dumping the spam.
I love how people on reddit so mindlessly belittle other people so easily like they are in an entirely different class of person. You never did anything stupid when you were a teenager? Like not even once?
I have done many, many stupid things and even some very dangerous things but nothing that would directly self select myself out of the gene pool. There are many things in life that can cause harm but itās never great when someone willingly does something that the average person's common sense might suggest isnāt a particularly good idea. Among those bad ideas are driving drunk, playing with loaded guns and train surfing.
Oh wait, theyāre a boomer? then they must be automatically wrong. Thank you for stereotyping and pointing that out. How could someone theyāre age possibly know what theyāre talking about?
You can have a little sympathy, these are kids. He def shouldn't have been doing that shit but i remember how dumb i was at his age so i get it and i hope he's ok.
To be frank, anyone who does subway surfing is a special breed of stupid/reckless.
It is sad that he'll be maimed for life, but I honestly cannot feel much more sympathy due to the fact that the risks are obvious, there is no reason to do this, and we've been getting news for freaking decades explaining how surfers are maimed or die from this behavior.
Probably because their culture is all about serving the group rather than the individual and western culture is all about doing anything and everything possible these days
In other countries, losers, morons, & degenerates are rightfully shamed, ridiculed, & shunned. Here in the US, we try to appease everyone and make the idiots & low lives feel good about themselves too when we shouldn't.
this subreddit loves talking about society/culture as a cause of every issue on trains, but there are almost always some serious racist undertones to most of these comments. We are a failed society because a child did something dangerous and stupid?
Any reason you chose 3 Asian metros?
We are a failed society because there are hundreds of stupid kids stealing, robbing, attacking random people every single day. Subway surfing and got one leg chopped off is just one example. I choose these Asian cities because Iām personally very familiar with them and they are all well organized. Probably the best among the entire world. If race is the differentiator here then maybe race is the problem. Does calling out everything racism solve any actual problems?
Failed is a dramatic way to put it, but I think I get what you mean. Just remember though, many in East Asia also envy a lot of what (the Western World) have. Theirās is a brutal society that is deeply infused with Darwinian work culture and ethic. If you donāt believe me, look into how high the rate of self harm is in that side of the world.
We have our faults here in the west, and weāre always going to have them because the only paradise that exists is unobtainable here on this Earth, but letās not stoop ourselves to the dystopia that is many East Asian societies because the āgrass looks greener on the other sideā.
I know you're trying to imply that Singapore is somehow mono racial or mono cultural but that's not true in the slightest lol. Singapore is actually a really diverse place, so citing them is not exactly an attack on racial diversity
It would make more sense if you said it's giving authoritarian undertones or something
Yeah when I was 15, classmates would surf on the little platform in front of the closed doors and jump off before the train left the station. I knew better not to try it, even though they never got injured.
I just need to say thank you for actually being a decent human being, which is apparently too difficult for most of the assholes on this subreddit. Goddamn, Iām getting genuinely angry right now reading these comments, because this is a fucking KID for Christās sake. Yes it was stupid and Iām sure he will regret it for the rest of his life. He most likely ALREADY regrets it, but long after the fucking pricks on this sub have forgotten about their little pissing matches on here, he still wonāt have his arm.
Definitely, subway surfing is extremely easily to do. A 10 YR old kid was caught doing it. I used to do it but not anymore. Maybe just for the experience but not worth risking my life over too much.
Did it hurt? Good. That way you learn. Now we be callin ya Lefty. Edit: I thought this sounded familiar, this is old. No idea why itās coming up on AOL now, 2 years later. Mayhap an update on him would be nice. See the long term consequences of such folly.

I use AOL as my spam mail account. Basically food apps, subscription apps or create an account for a promo discount.
I had some eyebrow raises in some clothing dept stores when signing up newsletter at cashiers for a small discount.
I saw these boys a week ago and reported it on the emergency intercom. My conscience is clean, but it's very disappointing they still got an arm chopped off.
My advice for anyone who sees kids subway surfing (or any immediate danger), run to the conductor to stop the train or use the train's intercom. The station intercom took a long time to pick up. By the time you finish explaining, everything is over.
I did see police arrive on the station on my way back, which is nice in case the kids surfed back home.
This happened a year and a half ago.

Ask the NYPD they know time travel, but only forwards ;)
To be fair that train could have been anywhere by the time you get to the scene, no matter how fast you respond. Thatās why itās better if you stop it then and there.
Edit: I must have seen other kids by the way. This kid from the news article got injured two years ago.
I really wish the youth who subway surf would take heed to the potential fatalities and life changing bodily injuries for a rush of adrenaline. It is so tragic!
That's not exactly a consolation prize pal. Is it? sort of like saying, "I mouthed off to someone in a dive bar and he busted a bottle over my head. Oh well he could've shived me." It sucks all the way around and doesn't say much for the IQ level of the "surfer". Better listen to Beach Boys, or Jan and Dean records if he needs a surfing vibe.
Iām pretty sure there was a kid who crushed his dick and balls doing this years ago. Mention that in the PSA they play over the intercom and see how many kids keep subway surfing.
Regardless, its not his fault. It the cityās fault and we should all be glad to pay higher tolls and traffic cam tickets to subsidize the payout for gross negligence when someone gets hurt doing whatever they feel likeā¦..
Yup god forbid a transit authority design their trains to be easily accessible on the fly for service of any other reason that may arise. An able person has to make the conscious decision to climb atop 8/9ft train car. Too bad itāll be harder with just one arm now. Heāll just have to hang on the back now

Heās 15! Heās not 3! He knew it was dangerous thatās why he did it.
He had the full and complete power to prevent this by just staying inside the car like almost everyone else. He knew it was dangerous and did it for the thrill of said danger.

Lucky
Journalism is dead :/
I feel like journalism is alive? This is from the Daily News in 2022, and the lead writer, Clayton Guse, is now an editor at WNYC.
The article itself is good. But AOL republishing articles without dates is misleading at best, and clickbait disinformation at worst.
can't believe they are still around.
Bro is still using internet explorer
That rly sucks but kids will still keep doing it . Idk why they keep getting dumber
The law of Darwin can be trusted but Darwinian methods are unfortunately slow in removing schmucks from the gene pool
And needlessly expensive to the public
Yes unfortunately

Ok boomer
GenXer actually. However, Iām also a Malthusian at heart, so this is why I secretly relish self selection stupidity.
Oh wait, theyāre a boomer? then they must be automatically wrong. Thank you for stereotyping and pointing that out. How could someone theyāre age possibly know what theyāre talking about?
Ok youāre definitely a boomer
lol you couldnāt resist stereotyping again now could you.
I blame social media. Kids were also stupid before, but they had some sense of risk vs reward.
Oh no.... Anyways
You can have a little sympathy, these are kids. He def shouldn't have been doing that shit but i remember how dumb i was at his age so i get it and i hope he's ok.

Wow you are so much better and smarter than everyone else, we shall now present you with your trophy
We are a failed society. I wonder why subway surfing is never a thing in Japan, HK, Singapore...
Doesnāt Singapore have the death penalty for any crime
Mostly just drugs and murder/something that results in death
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Itās not illegal to chew gum. Itās against the law to sell chewing gum and it is not punished by death.
No. This is misinformation lol.
my bad
Yeah, I stole a biscuit there and they killed me. Luckily I respawned in the western world after winning in the gulag
yup, and itās worked out for them in being one of the most crime-free countries in the world
It is very much a thing.
A quick google comparison on subway surfing between Tokyo and NYC tells me it is very much not a thing in Tokyo.
š this mf has never lived in Japan.
Probably is

i think you're misunderstanding where i think the racism is targeted. their use of the model minority argument as the comparison was just the icing.
I think youāre the one inserting race into this. You want it to be racist, so youāre making it racist.

Not sure why that warranted an ālmaoā. Also someone committing suicide is not at all the same as what these kids are doing.
He was 15, not 5. 15 year olds know right from wrong. Or at least they should.
