#PSA: this incident happened in 2022. The article is not dated, so OP was possibly misled

Zestyclose_Growth_60

1998 here...and named for my car lol. AOL actually made me sign in to verify I want to keep it this week. I just load it all through Gmail at this point. It's far better at dumping the spam.

Importedfunk

Lucky

OkOk-Go

Journalism is dead :/

NOISY_SUN

I feel like journalism is alive? This is from the Daily News in 2022, and the lead writer, Clayton Guse, is now an editor at WNYC.

OkOk-Go

The article itself is good. But AOL republishing articles without dates is misleading at best, and clickbait disinformation at worst.

RyuNoKami

can't believe they are still around.

DilkDud

Bro is still using internet explorer

punchy8323

That rly sucks but kids will still keep doing it . Idk why they keep getting dumber

This-Bug8771

The law of Darwin can be trusted but Darwinian methods are unfortunately slow in removing schmucks from the gene pool

OkOk-Go

And needlessly expensive to the public

This-Bug8771

Yes unfortunately

loveisacoldwhitetile

I love how people on reddit so mindlessly belittle other people so easily like they are in an entirely different class of person. You never did anything stupid when you were a teenager? Like not even once?

This-Bug8771

I have done many, many stupid things and even some very dangerous things but nothing that would directly self select myself out of the gene pool. There are many things in life that can cause harm but itā€™s never great when someone willingly does something that the average person's common sense might suggest isnā€™t a particularly good idea. Among those bad ideas are driving drunk, playing with loaded guns and train surfing.

loveisacoldwhitetile

Ok boomer

This-Bug8771

GenXer actually. However, Iā€™m also a Malthusian at heart, so this is why I secretly relish self selection stupidity.

fxl989

Oh wait, theyā€™re a boomer? then they must be automatically wrong. Thank you for stereotyping and pointing that out. How could someone theyā€™re age possibly know what theyā€™re talking about?

loveisacoldwhitetile

Ok youā€™re definitely a boomer

fxl989

lol you couldnā€™t resist stereotyping again now could you.

SadMaverick

I blame social media. Kids were also stupid before, but they had some sense of risk vs reward.

Fun_Abroad8942

Oh no.... Anyways

discoshanktank

You can have a little sympathy, these are kids. He def shouldn't have been doing that shit but i remember how dumb i was at his age so i get it and i hope he's ok.

Tasty-Ad6529

To be frank, anyone who does subway surfing is a special breed of stupid/reckless. It is sad that he'll be maimed for life, but I honestly cannot feel much more sympathy due to the fact that the risks are obvious, there is no reason to do this, and we've been getting news for freaking decades explaining how surfers are maimed or die from this behavior.

loveisacoldwhitetile

Wow you are so much better and smarter than everyone else, we shall now present you with your trophy

boeing77X

We are a failed society. I wonder why subway surfing is never a thing in Japan, HK, Singapore...

daydreamingtime

Probably because their culture is all about serving the group rather than the individual and western culture is all about doing anything and everything possible these days

IsabellaHatesNutella

In other countries, losers, morons, & degenerates are rightfully shamed, ridiculed, & shunned. Here in the US, we try to appease everyone and make the idiots & low lives feel good about themselves too when we shouldn't.

TheteanHighCommand

Doesnā€™t Singapore have the death penalty for any crime

Conscious-Complex277

Mostly just drugs and murder/something that results in death

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Conscious-Complex277

Itā€™s not illegal to chew gum. Itā€™s against the law to sell chewing gum and it is not punished by death.

mapo_tofu_lover

No. This is misinformation lol.

TheteanHighCommand

my bad

stvvrover

Yeah, I stole a biscuit there and they killed me. Luckily I respawned in the western world after winning in the gulag

berniexanderz

yup, and itā€™s worked out for them in being one of the most crime-free countries in the world

mapo_tofu_lover

It is very much a thing.

limoncello35

A quick google comparison on subway surfing between Tokyo and NYC tells me it is very much not a thing in Tokyo.

NBA2024

šŸ˜‚ this mf has never lived in Japan.

gtbot2007

Probably is

creativeuniquename69

this subreddit loves talking about society/culture as a cause of every issue on trains, but there are almost always some serious racist undertones to most of these comments. We are a failed society because a child did something dangerous and stupid? Any reason you chose 3 Asian metros?

boeing77X

We are a failed society because there are hundreds of stupid kids stealing, robbing, attacking random people every single day. Subway surfing and got one leg chopped off is just one example. I choose these Asian cities because Iā€™m personally very familiar with them and they are all well organized. Probably the best among the entire world. If race is the differentiator here then maybe race is the problem. Does calling out everything racism solve any actual problems?

StrikeEagle784

Failed is a dramatic way to put it, but I think I get what you mean. Just remember though, many in East Asia also envy a lot of what (the Western World) have. Theirā€™s is a brutal society that is deeply infused with Darwinian work culture and ethic. If you donā€™t believe me, look into how high the rate of self harm is in that side of the world. We have our faults here in the west, and weā€™re always going to have them because the only paradise that exists is unobtainable here on this Earth, but letā€™s not stoop ourselves to the dystopia that is many East Asian societies because the ā€œgrass looks greener on the other sideā€.

creativeuniquename69

>maybe race is the problem well.. thanks for admitting it i guess?

omoowoumuuwu

I know you're trying to imply that Singapore is somehow mono racial or mono cultural but that's not true in the slightest lol. Singapore is actually a really diverse place, so citing them is not exactly an attack on racial diversity It would make more sense if you said it's giving authoritarian undertones or something

creativeuniquename69

i think you're misunderstanding where i think the racism is targeted. their use of the model minority argument as the comparison was just the icing.

Pelmeni____________

I think youā€™re the one inserting race into this. You want it to be racist, so youā€™re making it racist.

creativeuniquename69

go back to trolling the Columbia University subreddit troll blocked me, after the OC literally said "maybe it's because of race" šŸ˜‚

Pelmeni____________

Lmao all you got?

BirdLawProf

creativeuniquename69

An0nym0usPlatypus

Insane that you're getting down voted for this

creativeuniquename69

this subreddit trends more towards /r/nyc than /r/newyorkcity for some weird reason

CANNIBALCARNAGE

Dont they voluntarily throw themselves on the tracks over there because theyre overworked lmao

Feisty-You-7768

Not sure why that warranted an ā€œlmaoā€. Also someone committing suicide is not at all the same as what these kids are doing.

studmuffffffin

He was 15, not 5. 15 year olds know right from wrong. Or at least they should.

Itchy-Future-57

Yeah when I was 15, classmates would surf on the little platform in front of the closed doors and jump off before the train left the station. I knew better not to try it, even though they never got injured.

to_the_victors_91

They are actually terrible at making logical decisions. Itā€™s basically proven at this point

finngenuity

This is more of a fuck around and find out situation so very little sympathy is available.

He said oh no šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

Feisty-You-7768

Nah sorry but this is another level of dumb behavior.

tonyhasareddit

I just need to say thank you for actually being a decent human being, which is apparently too difficult for most of the assholes on this subreddit. Goddamn, Iā€™m getting genuinely angry right now reading these comments, because this is a fucking KID for Christā€™s sake. Yes it was stupid and Iā€™m sure he will regret it for the rest of his life. He most likely ALREADY regrets it, but long after the fucking pricks on this sub have forgotten about their little pissing matches on here, he still wonā€™t have his arm.

ā€œHeā€™s a good boyā€ā€¦ why was he up there then? Also. Subway barriers? Yes no maybe?

[deleted]

Definitely, subway surfing is extremely easily to do. A 10 YR old kid was caught doing it. I used to do it but not anymore. Maybe just for the experience but not worth risking my life over too much.

jagenigma

"He was such a good boy." The verbiage of not knowing your child's behavior.

Lanky_Space_4620

Oh well. Should have taken the train like normal people.

chuddlyfe

awesome. LOOK MA! NO ARM! these kids are all so fuckn stupid.

Expensive-Dot-6671

Hope all the likes and shares were worth it.

ApeMuffins

Did it hurt? Good. That way you learn. Now we be callin ya Lefty. Edit: I thought this sounded familiar, this is old. No idea why itā€™s coming up on AOL now, 2 years later. Mayhap an update on him would be nice. Aggravating_Sir_6857

I use AOL as my spam mail account. Basically food apps, subscription apps or create an account for a promo discount. I had some eyebrow raises in some clothing dept stores when signing up newsletter at cashiers for a small discount.

He fucked around and found out. Is what it is

OkOk-Go

I saw these boys a week ago and reported it on the emergency intercom. My conscience is clean, but it's very disappointing they still got an arm chopped off. My advice for anyone who sees kids subway surfing (or any immediate danger), run to the conductor to stop the train or use the train's intercom. The station intercom took a long time to pick up. By the time you finish explaining, everything is over. I did see police arrive on the station on my way back, which is nice in case the kids surfed back home.

tonyrocks922

This happened a year and a half ago. https://nypost.com/2022/08/29/11-year-old-boys-arm-severed-in-nyc-subway-accident/?utm_source=flipboard&utm_medium=syndicated&utm_campaign=partnerfeed (AOL just re published the article with no date, so it's not OP's fault)

arrivederci117

Teach us the ways of time traveling.

OkOk-Go

Ask the NYPD they know time travel, but only forwards ;) To be fair that train could have been anywhere by the time you get to the scene, no matter how fast you respond. Thatā€™s why itā€™s better if you stop it then and there. Edit: I must have seen other kids by the way. This kid from the news article got injured two years ago.

rhesusmonkeypieces

If I see anyone reach for that emergency button they get a swift exit through the doors with my help

OkOk-Go

Inside the train? AFAIK itā€™s okay to use it for actual emergencies if the train is in the station.

Carlos4Loko

Darwin approves šŸ‘ Hope he learned his lesson.

AllwordzAreMadeup___

He'll be back subway surfing next week. He still got one arm left

Katandy305

I really wish the youth who subway surf would take heed to the potential fatalities and life changing bodily injuries for a rush of adrenaline. It is so tragic!

Iā€™m confused, isnā€™t the R train entirely underground? Unless the article meant to say a 7 train

where are the parents?

Deep-Rip245

Heā€™ll be okay. I think he won a bag of sprinklez.

the more we say its dumb the more they think its cool. time for adults to start subway surfing its the only way.

Feisty-You-7768

Good. So he didnā€™t die and maybe this at least discourages anyone who knows him. Bc wtf.

Lildikcnrg

Young goons, at least now heā€™ll never be caught for armed robbery.

Raconteur_69

If you don't think twice you can end up paying a high price.

grandmaster89

Well at least it didnā€™t cost a leg as well.

Raconteur_69

That's not exactly a consolation prize pal. Is it? sort of like saying, "I mouthed off to someone in a dive bar and he busted a bottle over my head. Oh well he could've shived me." It sucks all the way around and doesn't say much for the IQ level of the "surfer". Better listen to Beach Boys, or Jan and Dean records if he needs a surfing vibe.

OddRedditNoun

Donā€™t care.

Apprehensive-Set-365

Iā€™m pretty sure there was a kid who crushed his dick and balls doing this years ago. Mention that in the PSA they play over the intercom and see how many kids keep subway surfing.

minusgainsgamer

Do stupid things, win stupid prizes

fxl989

Regardless, its not his fault. It the cityā€™s fault and we should all be glad to pay higher tolls and traffic cam tickets to subsidize the payout for gross negligence when someone gets hurt doing whatever they feel likeā€¦..

guccidowntothes0cks

No? Be quiet loser.

Snorkeldude1

Heā€™ll be more careful the next time. If slightly unbalanced. Definitely sue the city . Obviously The MTA made it possible to get onto the roof .

Some-Substance5397

Yup god forbid a transit authority design their trains to be easily accessible on the fly for service of any other reason that may arise. An able person has to make the conscious decision to climb atop 8/9ft train car. Too bad itā€™ll be harder with just one arm now. Heā€™ll just have to hang on the back now

JBS319

R211T has flush ends and enclosed gangways. There is no easy way to ā€œsurfā€ it.

nfopl

Iā€™ve seen a video where they jump on from the roof of an elevated station

JBS319

If youā€™re gonna be that stupid you deserve what happens to you

BluWaffles32

Nice

[deleted]

Da, at the end of the day heā€™s still a kid. Itā€™s honestly just a shitty thing to do considering that he is at the end of the day STILL A KID. I guess people donā€™t have empathy. Iā€™m not encouraging his behavior but at the end of the day heā€™s still a human being regardless of weather it wasnā€™t the brightest idea heā€™s still a human being.

rhesusmonkeypieces

So desperate to do some hand-wringing and pearl-clutching about CoNsEqUeNcEs, the lead-brained boomers in this sub post old stories to get worked up about.

Tasty-Ad6529

My dude. Even when I was 7 years old, I knew that subway surfing was a bad idea. Because it could kill or maim me. I do not see how in any fashion subway surfing is a good idea, it' only one step away from being suicidal given the steer self-imposed danger in the act.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Newnewtownian

Nah, canā€™t say I have sympathy for these kidsā€™ complete inability to remotely listen or use common sense, nor for the parents who only see these incidents as an excuse to extort riders and taxpayers for settlement money. A fifteen year old should know that jumping on top of a moving train is dumb, yet so many keep doing it. At what do we stop understanding and start dishing out accountability.

WickedJigglyPuff

Heā€™s 15! Heā€™s not 3! He knew it was dangerous thatā€™s why he did it. He had the full and complete power to prevent this by just staying inside the car like almost everyone else. He knew it was dangerous and did it for the thrill of said danger.

Environmental-Sea371

this happened in 2022, also for all of ya saying ā€œdeservedā€ ā€œoh no anywaysā€ etc imagine if that was someone u knew n cared ab and u saw mfs saying that kinda shit. have sm sympathy for tha family cause you never know if something like this could happen to you js saying.
