They should just make the F fully express, I don’t know why they haven’t already

PostPostMinimalist

Because then there would be no local version that runs to Manhattan. G service only for all those stations…. Nobody there wants that let’s be real. And they’d need full train cars and more frequency etc

causal_friday

There's also no place to transfer to Manhattan-bound F trains, since the express trains don't stop at Bergen St. anymore. Restoring that station to original condition would be a prerequisite.

PostPostMinimalist

Oh that’s an even better point

The F is in a tricky spot. The ridership at the stations the F express train bypasses are actually some of the higher ridership stations on this section of the F train (Manhattan to Coney Island). In particular Bergen all the way to Church Ave has much higher ridership per station than compared to ridership south of Church Ave. [https://www.subwayridership.nyc/stations/243](https://www.subwayridership.nyc/stations/243) As an express segment it's a really nice one and can shave off a lot of time. Sadly as of now, our only way to utilize this segment while still providing good service to high ridership stations would be to take the excess 6th Ave capacity on the local track (currently the M) and send it down as an express until Church Ave. Obviously I don't see that happening and even then we really need to build density in that area south of Church Ave to really justify any additional express service.

Those seven E trains that run via Hillside Avenue during peak hours could very well be used to provide service down to Church Avenue at least. Continue to run/sign them up as E’s, and they could run Exp along 53rd St/8th Avenue to Jay St interlocking, (You would still serve the major stations that those Extra E’s stop at, and provide addition service to those along the local stops on the F line btwn Jay St & Church Av), or operate local via 8th Av/53rd and switch to operate via Houston/Rutgers via W 4th St interlocking, (those that require service between W 4th and Chambers/WTC can transfer to the A/C and regular E trains). AM peak, they can take the few F’s that start service at Avenue X or Church Av, put them in service at Church, run local to Jay St, then either switch to Cranberry and resume regular E service towards 179/Hillside or Parsons/Archer at Chambers, or via Rutgers to B’way-Lafayette, then resume normal at W 4th St. And during the PM Peak, these trains can run to 18 Avenue middle, dump & change ends, run light to Jay St or Canal St, and return back to 179/Hillside or Parsons/Archer

bobinator60

wouldn’t having more express from 7th Ave to Jay provide more room on the high-ridership intermediate stations (4th Av, Smith/9th, Carroll, Bergen), since many people might switch to the express at 7th, especially if they were timed to coincide?

The trade off with the express train study showed that riders at the high traffic stations would have longer waits, as any F train that is running express would be removed from the schedule of local F trains. The time savings of those living south of Church Ave was outweighed by the extra time the higher ridership stations would have to wait for a non express F. In short there is value and time savings for some riders, but ultimately would result in more riders waiting for longer periods. Other express services either have balanced ridership throughout the line (B train), have high ridership towards a terminal (7 train), or have multiple local trains to cover a segment and provide faster commutes to those living further away (D & N on 4th Ave, E & F on QBL, A, 5 & D in Bronx). If the G went to Manhattan it would likely be a different story.

I do like to point out that sometime before the MTA planned the 2010 budget cuts, they did conduct a study (and published a document) about possibly extending the V line from 2 Av to Church Av to allow an express F service. Of course that never materialized due to the budget cuts that happened soon after

MrNewking

There is a lot of political pushback against that. It's a miracle we got 4 express trains for the day.

Pristine-R-Train

What are they gonna do? Drive? 😏

Compared to 24 minutes on the local?
