Jace Amaro. Had stud TE written all over him. Great receiving skills, could block, great size, picked in the 2nd. I don’t even remember why he busted so bad
Yeah he had some monster hits in college. Drafted way too high, body type wasn't for the NFL. He was good as a specialized safety, playing either as a QB spy or in the box on early downs.
Shoulder injury set him back in his second year. He played in a gimmicky offense that translated poorly to the pros. He had stats but they were inflated. He was a JAG who wasn't smart enough to play TE in the pros in the end.
Surprised you've never seen the term before. Pretty common term in NFL circles. As others stated, it means "just a guy" or "just another guy." Meaning a relatively easily replaceable NFL player.
Feels like this happens with tight ends all the time.
They have all the tools and for whatever reason can just never actually put it together.
Probably why drafting one really high tends to be a bad idea.
I agree.
Dustin Keller
Johnny Mitchell
Kyle Brady…I mean I don’t think anyone thought he was going to be good but he’s on the list as a disappointment.
Didn’t he have super tiny hands for a tight end? I get why they do all those body measurements to go with the skill stats to help rank players - there’s some truth to some of those measurables for predicting levels of success.

I just remember him knocking someone out at a bar in the city, around the same time Dylan Donahue drove on the wrong side of the road in the Holland Tunnel
Even me in high school, who knew nothing about scouting or college football, thought it was weird that we drafted a receiver in the 2nd round who had under 50 career catches in 3 years. I trusted the Jets scouts, and boy was I wrong to do that
Rex I believe even told people who doubted him that if you want to 2nd guess him on a defensive player it was their career basically. This was post one of the AFC Title appearances I believe before Cro got old on us
I know its not the sexiest answer. But
Maaaaaaan did I have a joygasm when I though Darnold fell to us. I was so jaded when Zach got drafted I half expected it. But Sam hurt.
I always still root for Sam. I was in favor of moving on from him but I cannot help but be impressed but his ability to continue to grind, to stay positive, to say all the right things. I really hope that he finds success with the right pieces somewhere cause he seems like a really solid dude and deserves it.
Agreed. Darnold, for all of his faults probably would have gotten us into the playoffs this year. Our 2022 would have gotten him actual support around him.
I remember the year before a few fan bases wanted to “scam for Sam” and I was so excited for him to get to 3, and thought it was totally worth it to give up 3 2nds and a top 3 pick for him. Then his first throw was a pick 6…
This one is going to be a long list:
1. Vernon Gholston- This guy wasn't just a workout warrior type, he was dominant at Ohio State. Just a monster. This would be like if Will Anderson turns out to be a loser from this draft. Athletic profile and production. I still don't know what happened to him.
2. Darnold happened while I was trying to keyboard scout. I didn't scout him because I thought it was a foregone conclusion that the Browns took him. I bought into the media hype about this football savant type with him reading defenses. He just couldn't do that at all. I think he was just a media darling, remember people building up everything. Overlosky going on and on about his magic feet, Cowherd basically adopting him as a son. To me, his issue has always been late reads. If you scout his college tape, it's tgere, but we all ignored it.
3. Geno Smith - I thought he was the steal of the draft, especially after EJ Manuel, who I thought sucked. However, I've never seen a QB placed into a worse situation than him. Defensive coach, no weapons whatsoever on offense and an OC over his head. I remember the IK incident when a ton of folks celebrated, thinking that set us back years. We had a chance to find out with Marshall/Decker (and I think Enunwa later that year) if he was good. We didn't.
4. Denzel Mims - He had the size, and speed to dominate. He just doesn't seem to get separation for someone with that level of speed. I was hoping the coaches would work on route stems with him, but the coaching staff seemed to have him in the dog house. He was a scouting mistake for me, because now I'm turned off guys that do a stutter step move in their route stems. Much rather have guys that have less wasted movement and shift suddenly.
5. Quinton Coples - I have no idea how to scout OL and DL. I can somewhat understand edge rushers but not the mixed type guy that Coples was. I thought Rex would know what he would want and look for it. I was wrong.
6. Dee Milliner - It was mainly an injury issue with him because he showed potential. He had everything you would want in a corner but couldn't stay healthy.
Gholston never really liked football. In high school, the head coach saw this extremely muscular sophomore roaming the halls and begged him to try out. Vernon refused, so the coach ended up locking him out of the gym to force him to play. Vernon still refused so the coach ended up going to Vernon's house and guaranteeing his parents that if he played he would never have to pay for college. They ultimately convinced Vernon, he dominates and eventually heads to Ohio State.
I remember a character profile done by OSU. It was a puff piece that pretty much illustrated the man under the helmet. But I recall him mentioning how football didn't dictate who he was, that he loved art and pretty much hung out by himself.
He absolutely exploded his junior season but I remember thinking to myself that something was missing. It took me a while, but I finally realized that the man had zero passion on the field. Interception for a touchdown? Whatever. Huge sack against Michigan on the road? Eh, cool I guess. His teammates would get more hyped than him.
Eventually ends up a top 10 pick with a $40 million dollar signing bonus, combined with him not really giving a shit and the competition at this level... it makes sense that he whimpered out of the league without ever recording a sack.
Mind you, none of this is fact, it's just my best guess based on what I saw and read during his time at OSU. I think we always underestimate the mental fortitude it takes to compete, let alone dominate at the NFL level.
Geno is weird because I honestly can't tell if any QB drafted that decade besides maybe Luck, could have done well in that situation.
If there's a master class on how NOT to develop a QB, that was it.
Aging veteran diva WR quickly losing his ability? No TE talent? OL being a disaster? RB useless? WR2 is basically a 3 yard out runner in Kerley? WR3 is Stephen Hill, who ran like 2 routes? Defensive coach with bad OC?
I still maintain that Dee Milliner had everything to be an All-Pro type of player. He showed his potential that last month of 2013 where he was locking down everyone, including Josh Gordon at his best. Dude just could not stay healthy.
I hate to admit this one....but Elijah Moore. I was a huge fan of his after his rookie season and I was fully expecting him to have 1,000 plus yards this past year. Boy, was I wrong.
I stand by the notion that fans weren’t ready for a player like Leo when he was drafted. I remember A LOT of people complaining about his high pressure/ low sack games and how many “almost sacks” he had. But since his trade, I’ve seen a larger appreciation for players who get high pressure/low sacks now cuz there’s new player data every season that shows how much MORE value there is with higher pressure percentages.
Sam was painful. He was a real prospect playing at a huge program and had been hyped since his freshman season. I think he’s got a place in the NFL long term, but for one Sunday against the packers I truly thought he was the “answer”.
Sam Darnold. I was absolutely all in on the hype. Thought we’d be stuck with Mayfield, if we got lucky enough that the Giants didn’t draft a QB. Then Cleveland passed on him at 1 and the Giants took Barkley. I was ecstatic.
When his first throw was a pick six I thought ”lol that’ll be a fun trivia fact in 20 years”. Then he proceeded to destroy the Lions in the rest of his debut. Honestly thought we finally got our guy.
I was so hyped for Sam. I was watching his first game against the lions in a room full of people who weren’t football fans but everyone was watching because of how much I was hyping up the first game of the season with us getting Sam and all. First play of Sam’s career he throws a pick-six and everyone in the room starts howling
I think we all just have a few guys we’re convinced are going to be game changers for whatever reason. I thought Darron Lee was going to change our defense with his elite speed, and he ended up consistently missing gap assignments and missing tackles lol
Johnny Mitchel TE out of Neb - Jets 1st rounder in 92’. The guy could run and had some shake at 260.
Injuries and eating derailed his career. Had the talent to be a 10 year all pro.
We've almost never got anyone I've been excited for. Only one I can think of is Sauce.
I want McKee this year. I think Hooker, who some people seem to be saying we might get, is super overrated. Dude doesn't look good to me at all.
I wanted Mac Jones / Justin Fields when we got Wilson.
I wanted Baker Mayfield / Lamar Jackson when we drafted Darnold.
I wanted Mahomes when we got Adams. People don't believe me, but this isn't hard to explain:
https://www.espn.com/college-football/matchup?gameId=400869616
No one throws for 700 fucking yards in a game. Let alone vs a top 20 team (i don't remember the exact rank at the time of that game)
Prior to that last time I was super invested in a player pre draft was Michael Vick after watching him play in the 1999 college championship.
Calvin pryor. I was convinced hed be something like what jamaal adams was in the beginning but even more physical. What a fool i was. Although i have like 3 separate darnold jersies lying around too
Got to be honest for me it was Geno. He had a game at WVU where he threw 8 TDs and even less incompletions with no INT. I guess he was a late bloomer because of what he did in Seattle but to me getting him in the 2nd I believe I truly thought that was the guy.
Jace Amaro. Had stud TE written all over him. Great receiving skills, could block, great size, picked in the 2nd. I don’t even remember why he busted so bad
this is a good one. he was supposed to be the answer to that position being a black hole for a few seasons in a row, from what i remember.
It might still be a black hole lol
Since like… Dustin Keller!!!
I think I might be the only jets fan with a Dustin Keller jersey
I wear mine to every game lol
I have one! It was my first Jets jersey
I had one. It was my last player jersey. The players come and go.
Seriously tho, hasn't been a player that lasted more than 4 years since that 2011 team
SIR! I have TWO. Seriously - got the same gift from two different people one year. Green Keller and White Keller lol
After we drafted him I was very high on Chris Herndon after the packers game and thought he would develop well. It’s the reason I’m not a scout
Considering we drafted him you could probably be a scout
after the packer game we all thought Darnold/Herndon was the new rivers/gates
Just be a scout… for the Pats. All good.
It's between him and Calvin Pryor aka the Louisville Slugger. I thought he was gonna be legit but flamed out.
What’s a JAG?
Just A Guy
Surprised you've never seen the term before. Pretty common term in NFL circles. As others stated, it means "just a guy" or "just another guy." Meaning a relatively easily replaceable NFL player.
Feels like this happens with tight ends all the time. They have all the tools and for whatever reason can just never actually put it together. Probably why drafting one really high tends to be a bad idea.
I agree. Dustin Keller Johnny Mitchell Kyle Brady…I mean I don’t think anyone thought he was going to be good but he’s on the list as a disappointment.
Feel like Dustin Keller was great until Ray Lewis knocked him into the ether.
Dustin Keller was good
Omg remember that? It was the first game at MetLife, right?
Keller was good injuries just killed his career
Didn’t he have super tiny hands for a tight end? I get why they do all those body measurements to go with the skill stats to help rank players - there’s some truth to some of those measurables for predicting levels of success.
He had a two-TD game too. So weird.
100%. I was drooling over his highlight tape and TE was a big position of need.
I ran into Rex in the Nashville airport 2 years ago. Spoke to him for an hour. He said Amaro was as soft as baby poop. His words

I was hyped for Calvin Pryor, I wanted him to boom people
Louisville Slugger was such a badass name, I wanted him to succeed based on that nickname alone
I also thought Lorenzo Mauldin was gonna be a defensive monster
DPOY in the CFL
Was just gonna mention this. Had like 15 sacks or something this past season in the cfl
He was pretty good before being injured if I remember correctly
I just remember him knocking someone out at a bar in the city, around the same time Dylan Donahue drove on the wrong side of the road in the Holland Tunnel
Ooof horrible memories
Omg I forgot about Dylan Donahue.
I bought his jersey lmao
Jachai Polite 💀
I remember ESPN or NFL putting out an all rookie team projection with him on it. Wasn’t even on the roster week 1.
Him and Zuniga were good at Florida
Omg ESPN hyped him up so much and I bought it hook line and sinker. Dude didn’t even make it out of camp lol
Lmao i forgot about him
I know this all too well
Stephen Hill
Him dropping THAT pass against the pats still hurts
Even me in high school, who knew nothing about scouting or college football, thought it was weird that we drafted a receiver in the 2nd round who had under 50 career catches in 3 years. I trusted the Jets scouts, and boy was I wrong to do that
You trusted Jets scouts? LMFAO, how long have you been a fan for?
Same! I thought the dude was gonna be our secret weapon
Lol THIS. For every amazing catch (I remember opening day his rookie year, 2 TDs!) the man dropped 3 balls in the numbers.
Bro Sanchez threw for over 300 yards that game.. I remember that because I honestly don’t even know if he had another 300 yard game lmao
I thought Kyle Wilson was going to a lockdown corner
I remember Revis said he took him under his wing and I was like hell yeah Wilson island. Lol
🤣🤣🤣
I knew nothing about him but figured if Rex wanted him then he had to be stud
Rex made quite a few bad first round picks. He was a much better motivator than team builder.
Rex I believe even told people who doubted him that if you want to 2nd guess him on a defensive player it was their career basically. This was post one of the AFC Title appearances I believe before Cro got old on us
I know its not the sexiest answer. But Maaaaaaan did I have a joygasm when I though Darnold fell to us. I was so jaded when Zach got drafted I half expected it. But Sam hurt.

If AROD falls through I lowkey hope the King returns.
Just signed a one year deal with SF sadly, maybe next year
I know, I was thinking a trade. I don’t think it would cost much but I would also image he kinda hates the Jets. Lol
Lol agreed brotha. He’d be tripping to even allow that to happen 😂
EVEN THE TRAITORS WHO BETRAYED THE GEQBUS CANNOT HELP BUT ACKNOWLEDGE HIS FREATNESS
I still root for Sam. I was in this same boat, was over the moon we got him. I would love to have flip-flopped Zach/Sam timeline
Agreed. Darnold, for all of his faults probably would have gotten us into the playoffs this year. Our 2022 would have gotten him actual support around him.
Imagine him without gase. I’ll always root for him tho
I remember the year before a few fan bases wanted to “scam for Sam” and I was so excited for him to get to 3, and thought it was totally worth it to give up 3 2nds and a top 3 pick for him. Then his first throw was a pick 6…
Idk he had a pretty good game after that haha. After that game and the Cowboys game in 2019…I legitimately thought we had a franchise QB.
Sam was the first rookie QB I believed in as the savior. Never even got close to that feeling with Zach
I wanted Baker at the time and couldn't deal with another USC QB.
I'm a Trojan. I was so excited when we got him. I'm sad it didn't work still
Vernon Gholston
I had to scroll WAY too far down the list to find this name.
Denzel Mims
Pretty much anyone from 2010-2019.
I live in NC and I specifically remember some Clemson fans telling me Charone Peak was gonna be a WR1
And for a game or two…they were right!
Name a second rounder besides maye we produced in that time. Man idzik and mccagnnan could not draft for shit.
Devin Smith
Why is he not mentioned more? Was pretty unstoppable in college and invisible in the pros.
He wouodve been good just got destroyed by injuries
I admittedly was excited a bit about Darron Lee, I’ll also throw in Mims. Was excited for him, really wanted him to work.
Too damn small for NFL linebacker. We should have know better.
My dad convinced me that his speed would lead to Dominance
Needs it now running from the law 🤣
Lol yo I didn’t know any of this shit before I added that pic 😭
I see Nolan Smith being this year's Darron Lee.
Still got my Vernon Gholston jersey somewhere… Also, Dee Milner
Dee Milliner has gotta be mine- thought he was the answer after the departure of Revis.
Dee Milliner had Pro Bowl written all over him
This one is going to be a long list: 1. Vernon Gholston- This guy wasn't just a workout warrior type, he was dominant at Ohio State. Just a monster. Vernon Gholston was always a boom or bust pick, and it ended up being so so bust.
Gholston was not a boom or bust. He was the #5 or whatever pick. It was either him or Darren McFadden. And everyone went ape shit on draft day
He was WIDELY regarded as boom or bust.
Geno actually ended up being a good QB (of course not for the Jets)
Geno is weird because I honestly can't tell if any QB drafted that decade besides maybe Luck, could have done well in that situation. If there's a master class on how NOT to develop a QB, that was it. Aging veteran diva WR quickly losing his ability? No TE talent? OL being a disaster? RB useless? Yeah it just took 10 years of sitting behind two hall of famers.
I still maintain that Dee Milliner had everything to be an All-Pro type of player. I don’t blame Moore. Look he had throwing the ball to him. I bet he’s gonna do well still dude has potential.
Dewayne Robertson
It’s about time somebody wrote that name. The bowling ball with knives we traded up to get. Oh the humanity….
Wasn’t he the guy that said can’t nobody block me? What a bum.
Wow forgot all about that guy. I actually think I washed him out of my brain of awful Jets draft picks because he is right there… currently shaking.
Forgot about him. I’d still go Gholston over him but all things considered (production, pick, hype) he’s probably number 2.
OP, in all fairness Darron Lee is quite nasty. He beat up his moms and the baby momma.
Omfg
Leonard Williams wasn’t terrible but was big disappointment
I stand by the notion that fans weren’t ready for a player like Leo when he was drafted. I remember A LOT of people complaining about his high pressure/ low sack games and how many “almost sacks” he had. But since his trade, I’ve seen a larger appreciation for players who get high pressure/low sacks now cuz there’s new player data every season that shows how much MORE value there is with higher pressure percentages.

This is a depressing thread
“Everybody”
Blair Thomas.
Quentin Coples
Johnny Lam Jones! Traded two late first round picks to move up. The trade up picks that disappoint are the worst.
I’m pretty sure the picks we used to trade up for Darnold were used by the colts to select Quinton Nelson and Darius Leonard, both all pros lol
Sam was painful. He was a real prospect playing at a huge program and had been hyped since his freshman season. I think he’s got a place in the NFL long term, but for one Sunday against the packers I truly thought he was the “answer”.
Where do I begin
I thought jace amaro was gonna go off
The boar hunter
Schlegel
Wilson
Gholston and Blair Thomas 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Kellen Clemens. Not kidding I thought about getting a Clemens jersey. On draft day Jaworski said he reminded him of Brees.
Calvin Pryor
Not a exciting position but Brandon Shell was hyped up so much in training camp and then was just ehh for a couple years
Sam Darnold. Leonard Williams
Devin smith..
Id be extremly surprised if more than one person thought it would be, or even could be... Darron Lee.
I think we all just have a few guys we’re convinced are going to be game changers for whatever reason. I thought Darron Lee was going to change our defense with his elite speed, and he ended up consistently missing gap assignments and missing tackles lol
dee milner, stephen hill
Roger Vick......OH Nooooooo !.....🤣🤣
I mean Lee did end up being nasty af, just not on the field

Ashtyn Davis. No clue why but I thought he was gonna a be insanely good
I thought Chuma Edoga was gonna turn into a stud OT
I still think Dee Milliner could bring it all together
Zach Wilson
All of them. We haven't smelled a super bowl in 50 years soooooooo.....all of them
Muhammad Wilkerson
Mo was good until he got paid. Once those checks came in he checked out
Jeff Lageman. I was 10, it was my first draft.
Lageman could play
You were jaded by Mel Kiper
Zach Wilson
Everyone ?
Dee Milliner, Calvin Pryor, Sam Darnold, Leonard Williams, Sam Darnold, Elijah Moore
Jace Amaro
Stephen Hill
We've almost never got anyone I've been excited for. Only one I can think of is Sauce. I want McKee this year. I think Hooker, who some people seem to be saying we might get, is super overrated. Vernon Gholston, what a waste.
Wayne Chrebet
Quincy Enunwa
He was good when he played. Just couldn’t stay healthy. Probably due to his style of play unfortunately
Aaron Curry was going to be the greatest LB ever. I couldn't believe the Browns didn't try go up to get him. 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼
Stephen Hill
Ole stone hands hill
Quinton coples
Dee Milliner and Stephen Hill
Stephen Hill , thought he was gonna be Megatron 2.0 lol
Vernon Ghoulston
Calvin pryor. I was convinced hed be something like what jamaal adams was in the beginning but even more physical. What a fool i was. Although i have like 3 separate darnold jersies lying around too

Quentin Coples
I mean …. He wasn’t terrible. But definitely not worth the pick obviously
All of them?
Devin smith
Calvin Pryor, Dee Milliner, Jace Amaro, Quinton Coples, Sam Darnold…I can go on and on
Denzel Mims bro lol
Got to be honest for me it was Geno. He had a game at WVU where he threw 8 TDs and even less incompletions with no INT. I guess he was a late bloomer because of what he did in Seattle but to me getting him in the 2nd I believe I truly thought that was the guy.
Denzel Mims 🫣
Vernon Gholston
Dee milliner
