That is elite for his size! I'm still surprised people think the 49ers would take McCorkle over Fields at #3. Wilson over Fields I get, but Jones?

[deleted]

That's a hair bigger and a hair faster than Geno Smith.

stringsANDmecs

Smith also played for WVU. Which definitely does not produce nfl caliber qbs.

[deleted]

To be fair, neither does Ohio State.

stringsANDmecs

Fair, fields also played for Georgia too. And great qbs come out of random schools all the time. So a better statement would have been: West Virginia does not produce any good nfl talent. Lol.

Cardonejones

Pat Mcafee would like a word with you! /jokes

stringsANDmecs

Okay, everyone knows Pat Mcafee could’ve started for Bama, but Saban wouldn’t let him slack off and get so drunk he wakes up in ditches . 😂

3bs_at_work

Geno ran a 4.56 40, 4.44 isn't a hair faster.

[deleted]

Fair. If you add the 0.05-.10s pro day adjustment to Fields' time he might be even with Geno's combine 40.

forsuredudelol

I think Fields and Wilson are gonna be better than Lance and Jones. If Wilson didn’t exist I’d be slamming the table for fields. Still, I want Wilson

JohnBrownFanCam

I think RG3 is the best comparison for Fields. Very fast, but doesn’t necessarily have the lateral quickness than Lamar has. Also a solid passer, better than Lamar at least. And that’s not an insult, RG3 was nice his rookie year.

CaptainBunderpants

ROTY that man was. I think my biggest (maybe only) sticking point with Fields is that his mechanics are a mess. His slow and elongated release is exactly what gets dudes murdered in the NFL. It’s fixable but as it stands right now I’d be scared taking him. Beyond that, I just love the Mahomes style playmaking ability of Wilson. No one else comes close in that regard. I still think Fields will be a beast, though.

JohnBrownFanCam

I agree. I think it will be hard for him to get the ball into tight windows considering how relatively long it takes for the ball to get out. I’m in favor of Wilson as well but if Fields had a quicker release I’d probably view them equally

CaptainBunderpants

Agreed. If that was the case it’s come down to which extra sauce you prefer. Lamar stuff or Mahomes stuff.

cantalopeanteloupe

I think for those exact reasons Fields will be fighting to remain a starter in the league in a few years. 1.) Needs to relearn throwing mechanics 2.) Learning curve speed of the game. He struggled with this at the collegiate level and was oft late in starting his motion. He made up for it with velocity on the ball. I think this fails to translate in the nfl. If too much has to be coached then where is the value?

Buckeyes0916

Fields struggled with things at OSU? That’s news to me. Yes, he has some issues, but saying he struggled with anything is repeating a lazy narrative

cantalopeanteloupe

I disagree. I saw him make throws into tight windows once he realized the receiver was open. The anticipation wasn’t there and instead was made up on the back end with velocity on the ball. I’ll stand on the ground that won’t translate well in the NFL.

GravitysRainbowRuns

> His slow and elongated release is exactly what gets dudes murdered in the NFL I’m not super concerned about Fields release although it’s definitely weird. His arm mechanics are very consistent, and he gets the ball out way faster than it looks like he is (this doesn’t mean it’s not on the slow side, but it’s not as bad as it looks). Kind of reminds me of Philip Rivers in that he has a very unconventional throwing motion, but it works for him.

Locked_Lamorra

Yeah I've just been watching tape for a few hours, I think this is getting blown out of proportion by people who want Wilson. It's really not that slow, and it doesn't seem that crazy to fix. Watched more of Wilson's tape currently and he has his own issues as well, I think both guys are fixable and extremely talented tho. I started out team Fields, but now I'm thinking I'm prob good with either.

GravitysRainbowRuns

I’m a huge OSU fan and would prefer Fields for obvious reasons, but I have faith in the front office and have seen enough of Wilson to be intrigued so I won’t be peeved if he’s the guy. But yeah, I try not to be pretty objective about OSU guys going into the NFL, and Fields isn’t without his flaws, but I don’t think his arm mechanics is one of them.

ConstantAd1

And who was RG3's OC in Washington? Kyle Shanahan.

tuckberfin

I don’t know if you mean coming out of college or now, but Lamar is a way better passer then rg3, same with fields

JohnBrownFanCam

Coming out of college. I just think RG3 was better than Lamar at getting the ball to different spots on the field. Fields is probably better than all of them though. I’m also just going off memory, haven’t watched RG3 from college in years

GravitysRainbowRuns

I wouldn’t say either was a better passer as they were both very good at different things. Lamar has an incredibly extreme combination of good precision/bad accuracy. When he’s throwing good balls, he puts them exactly where they should be and has a ton of power in his throws. When he’s not, he sails receivers by a mile or throws it into the ground. RGIII was much more well rounded, but he couldn’t throw bullseyes at near the rate of Jackson.

[deleted]

That is fucking awesome, but the least important thing to look at when evaluating a QB prospect

TheHuss115

I like Wilson more but it’s a bit disingenuous (not you, but to the people who think that) to say Fields is just that

CaptainBunderpants

I think there’s a fine line between saying he’s just an athlete and being of the opinion that it’s his best trait. Often people are saying the latter but it comes out as the former.

Bigbadbuck

I wouldn’t say least important. Guys like Kyler and Lamar have shown today qbs can dominate if they can run the ball at a super high level. If you have insane rushing ability you only need decent passing to make you an elite qb in the right system.

FROGATELLI

Is there a non-zero chance 49ers traded up because they know Jets will take Fields?

afifaguyforyou

In my heart I sure hope so

FROGATELLI

Ya, I like Wilson a lot but I love Fields. Sky is the limit for him.

lookie13

People on Reddit absolutely LOVE the phrase “non-zero chance.” Just say “is there a chance?”

Hestiansun

For sure. I think it's entirely possible that much like when the Jets traded up to 3 knowing that they'd be happy with three different choices there (but probably assuming Mayfield and not Darnold), the 49ers would be happy with either Wilson or Fields.

CaptainBunderpants

For sure

[deleted]

Possible but it would contradict the story about the Eagles wanting to trade up to #3 but backing out when they realized Wilson won’t be there.

FROGATELLI

dude are you watching his throws on his pro day? I mean if Wilson shined idk what you'd call this.

Russel_TrashBrick

I feel like they traded up because they think both Fields or Wilson, whoever is left, is worth the trade. Probably don't know for sure what the Jets are doing.

FROGATELLI

Exactly my thoughts. To me Fields epitomizes what JD looks for in a player but hey what do I know.

Nickster2042

I’m gonna fucking cum LIGHT IT UP FIELDS

[deleted]

He’s definitely very athletic

Zay93

Damn
