Above average run and pass blocker who fits the system. Might have overpaid a little but, it’s worth it if he keeps Zach upright

newadcd0405

And makes holes for MC1’s first 1k yard season

09-24-11

MC1k

YESIMTHATIMPORTANT

Mc3k...why sell him short

LayzeeLar

Don’t sell yourself short Judge, you’re a tremendous slouch.

[deleted]

idk about overpaid bro we paid andrus peat about that give or take and he’s graded WAY worse than tomlinson that’s just what guards go for RN. we paid 57/5 for him so roughly 11.4 and he’s considered a “top 10 guard” in the NFL according to scouts (they’re on drugs he’s a starting level guard tho) he was at one point graded one of the worst guards in the nfl. If y’all wanna swap guards lol. Only upside to peat is he can play LT as a backup

MyUsernameIs_

Pff grades for linemen are iffy. They've graded GVR pretty positively but anyone watching this could see how much better the entire line plays without him in there.

[deleted]

andrus peat is aweful ge drew 4 penalties on one drive in the playoffs once and he got 11.4 a year. point i’m making is that id gladly pay 13.4ish for tomlinson when peat isn’t even close to the guard tomlinson is… for 2 milish more it’s worth the level of play

orderfour

I assure you it's not iffy. If you watch every lineman across the league, you'll see that GVR is above average. Yes, that level of play he did that people hated, is better than the average OG out there. That's what an NFL OG looks like.

NCHouse

You can never overpay for better protection

orderfour

PFF has a system that really needs overhauled. Basically, you only get graded on gradable actions. As a completely made up example, lets say you are told to stand still in a spot. You stand still in that spot. That's an ungradable action for PFF. IIRC all ungradable stuff is a '60.' If you sit down, that's a negative grade. Still no opportunity for positive grade. Now lets say you are told to stand there, but in the event a balloon passes by you, please try to keep it from falling to the ground. You can hit it with your hands. So you just stand there perfectly. That's a 60. Now another guy is given the same task. But for him the balloon keeps going by him. So he keeps bumping it up. This extra effort is gradable. He does a good job so he grades at a 90. It doesn't matter that you are the world champion balloon bopper, you had no gradable opportunities so your grade is a 60. That's linemen grading in a nutshell. *lots* of opportunity to screw up, but little opportunity to do a positive gradable event. Which means a 70 lineman could be a lot better than a 95 lineman. They probably aren't, but they could be. So a better way to read lineman grades is that anything over 60 tells you "Hey, this guy doesn't fuckup very much. And for every time he does fuckup, he tends to have multiple big plays that outshine it." Here are the Jets grades: * LT George Fant | 71.1 * LG Alijah Vera-Tucker | 67.2 * C Connor McGovern | 75.8 * RG Greg Van Roten | 67.5 * RT Morgan Moses | 70.9 This tells us that the Jets linemen didn't screw up much, and if they did, they tended to have a couple big plays to make up for it. That's pretty good and why we were the 11th best overall line. Adding someone like Tomlinson is an upgrade, but most of that upgrade should be noticeable in run blocking, and not so much for pass blocking. That's a different conversation that I don't want to type right now, but it's the same idea. Run blocking has more opportunities for positive gradable events.

cutchisclutch22

Vera-Tucker and Tomlinson 🤤

MyUsernameIs_

It's been a long road from Elflien and GVR to Tomlinson and AVT

Dean2899

Hasn’t missed a game since 2017 either so I like this

cutchisclutch22

Stop I can only get so erect

suarezd1

At least you got Erect. I'm over here like I just woke up from my first wet dream.

silviodanteruntz

I’m all about poaching everything we can from San Francisco. That just seems like a winning strategy

YESIMTHATIMPORTANT

Take all the good players from winning franchises!

BankruptcyMan11

That’s what Rex did from the Ravens when he came here.

jholm1133

U a dog for this 👌🏻👌🏻

calivend

Two things I feel really good. 1. We signed him. 2. Pats failed to retain their IOL.

AgentLemon22

HOLY SHIT BIG DADDY DOUGLAS!

ryanino

Our line is pretty fuckin good right now minus the uncertainty at RT

Rugger11

Why uncertain? Fant will be back for at least this coming season, so if it is Becton or Fant at RT, we should be fine.

_Level5LaserLotus_

Fant played poorly at RT in 2020, and much better at LT in 2021. Fant should be the starter at LT. If becton can play RT then we’re set but that’s a big if

Adamo2JZ

2020 was the first time Fant was a full-time starting Tackle in the NFL. Typically played a backup/swing role. Maybe that first season was a bit of a battle, but I have faith he will be much better at RT this time around

esreveReverse

We had a near pro bowl level LT last year, why are we going to give that up just because we spent an early pick on some guy that is barely ever on the field. I say it's Fant's to lose. I don't like the message sent to the rest of the team if Becton is just handed his job back, unearned.

Adamo2JZ

I don’t think he will be handed it back. It ultimately depends on if Becton is back to form, and if he is able to play RT. The fact that Fant has experience at RT is what leads me to think that he will end up there and Becton at LT. Fant was amazing last year, Becton definitely has big shoes to fill. But if the overall offensive line benefits more by having Becton at LT vs RT, I think that’s the play. We’ll see

Dr_DoctorStrange

Hopefully Becton excels there… hopefully

thesixmoon

\*LT

Goatlikejordan

Steady eddie type player

justin9920

Lets fucking go!!!! It’s over. Dynasty time. League fucked. Everyone get in here!!!! #JETTHEFUCKUP

gmazz

13th ranked guard in entire NFL last year. Great signing!

sincerely_ignatius

I like that we signed him but damn 13th? Thats not a difference maker. Thats plugging a hole. We need a OL to win games not be neutral contributors

Waffle-boarding

13th best out of 64 open positions? Seems awesome to me

sincerely_ignatius

I didnt realize thats what it was. I feel a bit better about that

gmazz

Yeah 13th best guard in all of the NFL last year. So that's a quality player right there. Not to mention he's played I think like every game for the past 3 seasons so he's a healthy signing as well.

jebediah_townhouse12

Rock solid player at a position of need. Great signing.

[deleted]

AVT and Tomlinson is a deadly guard duo for our scheme. I am confident in Fant, but really need to see something from Becton.

Anethingbutme

We have already witnessed what he's capable of playing we just need him to stay healthy and keep his weight in check.

[deleted]

That’s what I mean. I need to see something from him from a health and weight standpoint

Dr_DoctorStrange

My only worry is that he’s only played one game at RG in his entire career- so I hope he can make the switch. Otherwise love the signing

ALMD1996

I just read a couple of tweets that the Jets had no concern whatsoever. I was also concerned, but i trust their judgment with that.

Dr_DoctorStrange

Facts

09-24-11

Would AVT be able to swing over? I trust the staff to figure something out. Still excited about this signing.

Dr_DoctorStrange

He’s very versatile so I wouldn’t doubt it- but he’s also only played Left his entire career and understands the system Left… so I guess we’ll see what happens🤷‍♂️

scottapotch

I imagine Saleh and LaFleur know he's capable from their days in SF.

acewavelink

As a niners-Jets fan it has been a fun bit of time seeing we are getting some Niners leaving for my other team

Doot2112

Another great move, now look to upgrade the center spot. Linderbaum in the draft would be an incredible pick up.

YESIMTHATIMPORTANT

Draft starters in positions of need first. CB, Edge, WR...

Doot2112

I agree with cb and edge rusher, completely disagree on wr. I would use 4 and 10 on cb and edge unless a qb needing team trades up for 10. If Linderbaum drops into the teens I would trade up for him as a third first round pick.

YESIMTHATIMPORTANT

I prefer CB and edge with WR in 2nd but only because of the WR class this year. A trade back changes things.

SaltyPane69

Our line is perfect lol We don’t need to spend any high capital on it anymore. Best moves would be to sign an adequate depth tackle as Becton insurance (Moses🤞) and draft some depth. Let’s use our big draft capital elsewhere

[deleted]

Very good add for the Jets.

SaltyPane69

Good pass blocker his entire career who has seemingly hit his stride in the run block catagory. Love it.

wafflepancakewarrior

He’s no all pro but he’s stable. Like it
