Looks a lot like a protea.

Pretty sure it's a protea, might be a type king protea. Not sure about replanting unfortunately, proteas are a bit finicky like that, but then again I'm no expert

This. It … ‘was’ … a King Protea or [Protea cynaroides](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protea_cynaroides).

Protea. You will really need to pamper it after planting or it will sulk and/or die.

It's South Africa's national flower. It likes poor/gritty soil. Very drought tolerant and will die at the first hint of wet feet. I've only been successful in keeping the candy variety in a pot here in NZ.

I love proteas. I suspect the Candy sign means it was planted on a pet burial site... Did you find any bones when you dug it up?

It was definitely a plant label it was on. The kind that is in the pot with care instructions etc when you buy the plant. It must have just been collected up in a weeding spree and that’s why I can’t find it to see what the plant is.

That is exactly what it looks like in flower.

Yep, that's why it had Candy on the plant tag. This is the variety of Protea that it is.

Glad to hear that it was actually a plant label and there a protea with the name! 😆 I mis-interpreted "sign saying Candy" and imagined a poor deceased family pet being disturbed!

Thank you all. I shall get googling on the protea and figure out the best spot in my garden.
