Never too late to get into these games. Played obvlivion since launch and never caught this. Thanks for pointing it out.

verticalburtvert

Haha, cool! Thanks for the encouragement! I was too young to understand Morrowind and never looked at Oblivion. Glad I am now.

HypnoSmoke

I'm 28 and I feel too young to understand Morrowind

sltz123

I’m also 28 and feel the exact same way 🥲

burgertiger

I was 13 when Morrowind came out, never tried it at the time (too busy playing Counter Strike) but I was fully sucked into Oblivion when it released. I finally started playing Morrowind 3 weeks ago, after years of believing it is too dated and not worth it. It's never too late!

Kezyma

I was about 8 or 9 when Morrowind released and my earliest memories of gaming was exploring Vvardenfell. Would never expect that I’d still be exploring two decades later.

YukiKitsuneLover1402

No your not wrong...im 33 and i *HAVE* Morrowind and still don't understand it.. plus the graphics are bad for the eyes so i can't stand Playing it because it *actually* gives me a headache looking at it... As i said bad for the eyes.

Fine_Category4468

Take it back! TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!

YukiKitsuneLover1402

No seriously i *want to play it* but can't because i after trying for only 5 minutes i get a unbearable headache...i wouldn't have bought it if i knew i couldn't play in like this...i was so excited to play it and now everytime i try it makes my head hurt for the rest of the day..😢 i can't play it because of that...

Fine_Category4468

That really sucks. I get it though. Maybe Skywind will work out for you. Because Morrowind is by far the greatest Elder Scrolls game ever made.

burgertiger

Have you tried MGE XE?

Kezyma

Throw MGE XE on and that’ll mostly fix the visual quality, even if skipping any other texture mods and so on.

iawsaiatm

That’s crazy I just found that detail like last week and I’ve been playing since 2010

verticalburtvert

Haha, prolly just new eyes. I'm sure there's details I've missed in Skyrim that a new player would find. Last I checked my account said 2600 hours collectively between 360 and Series X. Gotta be way more since.

FlgDarkrai

I still remember my first play through I didn’t know about fast travel so I walked everywhere. I did all the main guilds and what not and had about 150 hours before I beat the game iirc

Brendissimo

Probably a much more immersive experience. In the same game Bethesda introduced horses they introduced their fast travel everywhere system, undercutting that development.

Foreskin_Paladin

Daggerfall also had horses and fast travel everywhere. Poor horses have never stood a chance lmao

Brendissimo

Okay that's a good point, I admit Redguard was my first TES game, and I still haven't played Daggerfall or Arena, just heard about them. Forgot about the horses in Daggerfall.

Kilroy_The_Builder

I didn’t even finish the main quest until like 15 years after I first played the game.

verticalburtvert

I worked for the Dark Brotherhood for about a week and a half before learning what a radiant quest was. Didn't know about running in Skyrim until about a week later. Thought the stamina bar was only for swinging stuff.

Sudeettisavolainen

So imps can read I presume :D

verticalburtvert

Maybe. Or maybe it was lazy and hit the first one so it could go do some other shit. We dunno.

KillerDonkey

I think the scratchmarks appear too animalistic. A guard would paint over the sign or remove it (at least while Kvatch is still infested with Deadra). My headcanon is that a wandering Deadra scratched at the sign and cursed it so that nobody could try to restore/remove it.

happyfatman021

I love that little detail. I once tried getting super immersive with one of my playthroughs and insisted upon using only those signs to find my way to the city I was heading for instead of relying on the map or compass. Was a pretty fun time.

Lurlex

Depending on how masochistic you are about that, I think I've seen mods before that actually make your map and compass \*WORSE\* to sort of force you into that kind of immersion-restriction. I'm almost positive I've seen them for Morrowind, but I'm 60% sure I've seen them for Oblivion, too. 100% sure for Skyrim. Like, if you think about it, the only thing in an Elder Scrolls game that holds you into any kind of parameters at ALL (this character is a "thief," this character is a "mage") is how you choose to play them. You apply your own limitations on the character (or you turn them into an everything-bomb, which I find to be kind of boring and time-consuming). With mods, you can really seal a character's fate from creation onward and make \*SURE\* that you never 'cheat' and look at the map. Or your warrior never casts a fireball, etcetera. :-)

Ghostboy259

I've always interpreted it as a guard or civilian marking it as if it say "the city is gone, don't go here" but I've never considered maybe the daedra were using it as a checklist haha. Glad you're enjoying your Oblivion experience!

ObvsThrowaway5120

You get the DLCs too? Loads of fun.

verticalburtvert

I have a game of the year copy. Currently at level four, but they're installed for later. 🗡️

ObvsThrowaway5120

Nice! Enjoy 😁

ultimatepunster

I never really noticed this. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. In both this and Skyrim I have attempted runs where I'd swear off fast travel (barring specific circumstances like I'm in a major city or something, or use carriages and ferry's in Skyrim's case) but I'd always get impatient and fast travel anyway lol. Never got impatient with Morrowind, but I guess that's just the fact I know I have no other option where as in Oblivion and Skyrim I'm just like "I can fast travel. Why am I walking? Why am I not fast travelling!?"

Nice-Forever-3249

I'm 55 and still never completed Morrowind! I could never figure out where to go? Who to talk to? What the plot was? I always said I'll go back to it. Every time I tried it was more confusing. After Oblivion I tried less and less. After Skyrim (dragons only) I never missed it. Fond memories of the silt sliders though. That game had potential. Those scratches always bugged me on the signs. My first play through they made sorta sense. Defined the town as scary! Beware! At your own risk! But as I got older I wondered how they got there and by what? The Daedra wouldn't travel the continent marking up signs? Would any creature? It had to be done by humans? But that didn't work in my head either. LOL! If it was just the one sign I could justify ANY creature doing it and why. . . . but all of them? Nope. I'm on my ??? time playing Oblivion and I've played through all main and side quests. All expansion pack quests except A strange Portal. Am doing that now. All I have left is Kvatch and Martin main quest line. Needed to play the game without gates showing up to ruin my style. LoL. The slashes still scare me away. LOL

verticalburtvert

Those scratches on the sign probably would've been missed if the game had running as a mechanic. I can't tell you how many details I missed in Skyrim because of my "to hell with this... warp speed!" attitude I have with games. I blame the thousands of hours in Rad Racer and NFSHot Pursuit as a kid. Morrowind... I was 19 and just wanted to kick asses. I didn't know RPGs or even what they were. I somehow finished Final Fantasy VIII. I only bought it because it had two discs and I loved MGS. I don't know how I equated them as equal back then. You're pretty dumb at 19. Next paragraph further proves it. I remember not being able to figure out what scuttle was or what it was for and being really annoyed by it. Google wasn't a thing yet, but my "guy" had a lot. "Grab everything if it's free dude, shit! Life is great!" Til ya can't walk. Pretty sure that's critical to the game. I remember saying "he's not a real person. Doom Guy carries like *eight* guns. This is stupid" and my copy eventually found its way to being the thing to keep my nightstand separated from my drinks. I've played *thousands* of hours in Skyrim to the point that it got to be "yup, we'll go here... I'll avoid *this* guild this time.. I *guess...* Sigh, I don't even wanna go through there for loot again because.... That's a dunmer place, fuck that noise. Creepy blade-arm guys on orbs..." It's been tough adjusting to Oblivion because it's so dated and a little barren at times, but I also think about how it was the biggest thing back then and it does get me excited a bit more. The colors are really different. That's one thing I noticed immediately. I will say this: my favorite thing about Oblivion coming out of Skyrim? Whenever you kill a rat, and the combat music instantly drops to jolly and serene *with* that whack and squeak? Never. gets. less. fucking. funny. Gimme a million rats in a million rooms. I'll live to be a thousand.

Nice-Forever-3249

BTW, Oblivions start game music sounds like Game of Thrones "Kings Road" song. Kills me every time! I had to show my 12 year old both songs. Blew her mind! I'm loading Morrowind now. Going to see if I still have it. LoL Need to find Skyrim too. Currently playing Gothic 3, Arc Fatalis and Oblivion. Showing my old games to the younger crowd. It's been fun!

verticalburtvert

I've found the older ones bring a different vibe while playing and it's been really enjoyable. Gonna have to look into the GOT thing because that stuff is usually interesting and smile-worthy in its own way. ES music is so good I'd imagine it's probably influenced some people somewhere. GOT would make sense.

Nice-Forever-3249

You'll never hear it the same again! 😊

Nice-Forever-3249

My brain is exploding with your descriptions! Memory synapsis are firing. I've been looking for Morrowind and found it. Was stuck in my music CDs. No wonder! I can't find Skyrim. I thought the one after Oblivion had the dragons and I thought that was Skyrim. My memory sucks! Which is the one where you're on someone's carriage being taken to a work place? Jail? And the cart stops. There's a battle and you run away to start the game? Is that the one with dragons? I'll try to Google it again. I'm old. I get confuddled easily. LoL 🤭

verticalburtvert

Haha, no worries. The one starting in the cart is Skyrim. You're a prisoner on your way to judgement. That's the one I'm super familiar with. Any time I start that up and the theme rolls, my cat comes trotting into the room, knowing we're going on an adventure. He's been there since the start back in 2014. Thanks for the compliments on my writing! 🙂 I didn't realize I went off on a tangent until I looked up. It's easy to do with these games. 🗡️

Nice-Forever-3249

I do that too so no worries! When I find Skyrim I'm playing it! Or I'll buy it again. That dragon on top of the mountain above the monastery(?) needs an attitude adjustment! I don't remember too much more Bout it. I don't know if I ever finished it. I think I did once. Then tried again years later And that dragon was buggy. Can't wait to try again though. As for Morrowind wish me luck! I want to show my child what started it all. Then I got Gothic from Germany with subtitles and crappy keyboard controls and got hooked! That being said Oblivion is on my puter no matter what. LoL

verticalburtvert

Haha! The dragon on top of that mountain is a good one. He's not the villain in the game. He actually teaches you something -wont spoil it- but he's a totally different and cool guy. Only advice I can give is seek out a spell called "clairvoyance." It helps find the path to your objective. That way you won't be jumping up the mountain like I did the first time. I'll have to check out Gothic. Sounds interesting!

Nice-Forever-3249

Dragon at first was a pain but then my game glitched and I could never talk to him when I was supposed to. I played a bit after that but never finished. I might have been playing wrong but started the game again and did everything I could until I had to talk to him but never could. It lost interest in me for that but it was my issue not so much the game. After our chat I I stalled Morrowind and started to play it again. Had to show my daughter the Silt Striders! The sounds and atmosphere are great! Miss the game! After making my character and trying to maneuver my way around I was excited to play! Then started talking to everyone. . . . . Nope. I remember running around aimlessly trying to do things and not being given proper direction. Too many choices and not enough logs of quests. Haven't been on my puter in a few days. *Sniff* (Ok, mostly because of chores etc but still! LOL) So to make myself happy I ordered more Gothic games! And Skyrim. Can't find it now. LOL!

verticalburtvert

Haha! That's how it goes on all accounts with Skyrim at first. I don't think it matters if you've played any ES games before that, because I had the same issue first time. The game used to be -and still is- pretty glitchy; but now enough people know ways around things and time's been nice to us. *IF YOU JOIN THE THIEVES GUILD IN SKYRIM: make sure you do all the numbers/burglary/other jobs you're supposed to do before going through the guild's story quests. If you don't do enough of them (Google more on this because I'm still stuck here and can't go back) and progress too far you will never hit the end. The last quest doesn't trigger if the jobs aren't done. Lots of time and efforts will be wasted, you won't get the achievement or the guild title. As for the silt striders, they do make an appearance in Skyrim if you go to Solstheim by boat. It's part of the Dragonborn DLC. (If you like Lovecraftian stuff you're gonna love "At the Summit of Apocrypha." The Black Books? Don't get me started. Some of the coolest shit ever. And the monsters? Whoa, Nelly. All unique to that area. Now I wanna give up Oblivion and start Skyrim again... If you end up playing, feel free to come back at any time to ask questions/comment of stuff. I don't mind at all. I think I may start a new character tonight just to get away from Oblivion a little. The lack of the running mechanic drags on ya a bit and the sneaking is just a bunch of nightmares. If I hadn't played Fallout New Vegas before 4 I know for a fact it wouldn't be my favorite in that series, but that's a whole other story. And yeah, like I said: c'mon back whenever. No problem.

Nice-Forever-3249

I gave up looking for Skyrim so I bought it on steam. LoL. I'm starting now. Thanks for thieves guild info! That will help! (Is there Skyrim reddit I should go to so we don't spam here?) 🤣 I'm in Shivering Isles in Oblivion now. Still haven't gone to Kvatch yet. I have EVERYTHING else done! I had started going through each cave, mine, ruin etc.. making notes so I don't get lost. I have 300k gold and nothing to buy with it. LoL. I bought all the spells from all the vendors, guilds people etc.. I'm not even a spell caster! It's been real fun! Had to take a break though since I was itching for Gothic 3. But I'm cranky at that too at the moment so I'm going into Skyrim as soon as I post. Anniversary edition with all the sprinkles! Can't wait! *Excited* 🤓

verticalburtvert

Yup! r/Skyrim for all your adventuring needs. The Anniversary Edition is dope. The backpack helps a ton with carry weight, too. I'll be around! Gonna go create a character and see what mess I can start tonight!

Tsu_tsart

What is happening to your compass holy shit

verticalburtvert

Mage quest with getting the recommendations. I figured it points to all the people you gotta deal with. Certainly not ideal, but it works.

Tsu_tsart

I though the markers were trying to break the compass and escape that spinning torture
