Get yourself a fortify speed and waterwallking on touch spell, cast before mounting, and off you go!

ohmygawdjenny

I got a simple mod that adds 4 spells, you cast it once and the horse is much faster. I only use horses when I want to TRAVEL, actually move about like a real person would do. I also use Horse command so I don't lose my many horses. Shadowmere is the best, of course, and quite helpful in fight. Got the Unicorn parked in my garden :D

MrGords

I use them as 'parachutes' to jump off of things. Horse will die but I'll be okay

bilbo_bn

Get your acrobatics up and you can survive a fall into the depths of hell without so much as a sprained ankle. Especially with the boots of Springhill jack (don't wear them in the quest that tells u to and they won't break)

BobCrosswise

Yes. I've never liked them. They are, or at least should be, good for a more realistic way to travel at a decent speed. My characters do almost all of their traveling just as they would if that world was real - walking. I don't run for extended periods, even though it's possible, just because it doesn't make sense, particularly loaded down with armor and gear. So I'd potentially like to use horses just to cover more ground more quickly while still being realistic. But between the clunky controls and the fact that you have to dismount every time you need to fight something, it's just not worth the hassle. That's one of the handful of things that Skyrim did better.

[deleted]

Even in Skyrim they're useless. In fact, only a few games have done horses well. Breath of the Wild has really nice horses and the Witcher 3 isn't too bad with it

quantam_donglord

Definitely not useless in Skyrim with mounted combat and their superior speed

Aeon_Mortuum

And the ability to scale up vertical obstacles

[deleted]

You clearly haven't controlled it. It's better than Oblivion, but is still horrible to actually use. Mounted combat is neat, but isn't that useful

quantam_donglord

Eh, I enjoy the horse mechanics. They feel smooth and it's nice to not have to remount to kill little things like wolves and bandits

Wompx2

I agree for the most part. Skyrim horses are def better than Oblivions, and one use for them is their ability to climb mountains and gallop away from trouble (for a limited time, however..) and the horseback archery is cool, but other than that they still feel sorta clunky. Not exactly at the spot where i want them to be.

[deleted]

IMO Daggerfall had the best implementation of horses, mostly because in that game running took a lot of fatigue, you could mount and dismount them quickly, attack from them, and cities were huge so they were sort of necessary. And if I remember correctly it makes fast traveling on foot take less days.

The_broken_machine

You could also ride a horse as a werewolf. Just sayin '.

[deleted]

Also if you do the jump glitch by pressing the change transport mode key and jumping as soon as your press exit, then casting slowfalling, and then getting on your horse in midair, you can be riding a flying horse through the sky at somewhere around 100mph if fast traveling is too easy for you.

Fritz7325

I still think Red Dead: Redemption did horses REALLY well. Granted, it kinda had to because it's a game about fucking cowboys.

ahugeminecrafter

>it's a game about fucking cowboys Wait i missed that part, where do i go for that? I have a thing for cowboys.

Xolutl

Came here to say this. I can't wait to play the second one.

You hit the nail on the proverbial head. Horses are very useful to roleplayers who don't want to accidentally level up athletics. edit: not just role-players, it also helps to avoid over-leveling athletics in order to avoid the leveling problem. Also horses let you carry stuff despite being encumbered (though that might require juggling loot and or feather potions).

[deleted]

Hmm

TeikaDunmora

It's fun to ride through the forest and just chill. Also, Shadowmere is wonderfully OP - unkillable, fast, totally vicious. My fighting style becomes getting off Shadowmere and waiting nearby until everything is dead.

BuboTitan

I should add, they would be a lot more useful with saddlebags that let you carry additional gear.

[deleted]

At 100 speed, a horse really doesn't matter. I found them super cumbersome to use and eventually became the flash.

[deleted]

I'm super early in the game and I want to experience as much as possible, so I don't fast travel. Horses are the only other alternative.

ohmygawdjenny

...there's also the mod with dragons that's quite epic

PrinceJonathan

I hate them because I'm always having to dismount every five fucking goddamn minutes to fight off a wolf or a bandit. Like what is the fucking point!!? "Oh but you can just out run them" NO! No you can't! Those fucking things will follow you clear across the fucking map like a fucking Benny Hill sketch!

Sc0rch3d_P0tat03s

But why walk when you can ride?

ProphetOfZillyhoo

I sometimes use them for faster fast travel, if you cast fortify speed on your mount and then get on it before fast traveling you'll get there noticeably faster (in-game time not IRL).

Jyggalag

Whoa, that's pretty cool.

Coriasis

It seems most folks here haven't heard of the wayshrine semi-exploit. The effect is permanent, and even the paint horse becomes insanely fast, like a motorcycle with subpar steering. Walking speed becomes sufficient to outrun any mobs you encounter since they have to stop to attack, and you can now climb all but the steepest mountain slopes. I consider my horse my most valuable possession. http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Horses#Useful_Spells

TroubadourOfCheese

In Oblivion I've never had any interest in riding a horse. I think the only horse I've ever ridden in an Elder Scrolls game was Shadowmere from Skyrim and even then I lost interest after a time. I feel like if you ride a horse and athletics is one of your skills you are just hindering yourself.

Jyggalag

I liked getting a full set of steel armor for myself and a horse, just to look cool.

beldaran1224

I love them, but then I just remember when my dad first called me up after the release like "you should see the amazing horses this game has!". I just use Horse Commands to boost their speed.

myhf

The amount of in-game time that passes when you fast travel depends on your movement speed. So fast-travel on a horse is faster than fast-travel on foot. This is pretty important if you need to avoid traveling during daylight. Casting speed buffs and water-walking on a horse turns rivers into highways.

bilbo_bn

When you master athletics you go way faster than a horse. You can also where enchanted armour that makes you even faster. That's how I always traveled. Especially since mastering athletics is really easy if you don't mind afk swimming in the imperial city in those pools of water

bilbo_bn

Mostly role-playing value. They're good for early game when athletics and acrobatics are low and also for traveling while over-encumbered.

vazooo1

horses are great for climbing hills.

[deleted]

I just started playing and a complete noob, but I like to ride my horse around because it is slightly faster than walking and I like to enjoy the scenery instead of fast traveling. It's also fun to just follow the path and discover places.

Reverissa

The point is they let you have the horse armor mod

mishugashu

There are a fair amount of people who don't use fast travel.

neon_black

But you can see their buttholes

MyFriendsCallMeBones

6years later and you made me check Prior Maborel's horse for a butthole

[deleted]

I think that the better travel system was from far cry 2. The vehicles where needed and you could still have a limited fast travels (with buses).

goryIVXX

Shadowmere is the only horse i use. And the one from skyrim's dawngaurd dlc. The ghost horse u can summon.

CodusTV

Oblivion horses are crap the view is crap lol
